Beware: the camera lens on the back of our SGS II is made of cheap plastic. I learned the hard way.
Yesterday I was using the camera and all was really good. Today all photos were blurred. I checked and noticed a small bend, yes a bend, right in the middle of the camera lens. It is not a scratch, which has been my concern since buying the SGS2, it was a bend. I may be wrong, but glass should not bend, it scratches. Now I don't have a lens anymore, I have a prism.
The phone did not fall, or was treated badly. Most probably, I put it in my pants' front pockets, as I have done for years with my HTC phones (horrible cameras btw, compared to the sgs2), there may have been a contact with a harder surface (a key, maybe, but I don't suppose so), and the lens bended. It's a real pity. I'm considering now removing the "lens" as it is not the actual lens, just a cover I guess, and see if this works.
This may be the best and most expensive cell phone right now, why couldn't Samsung put a real glass (like apple does, btw) to protect the camera?
I hope this warning helps others not to get into the same problem. Maybe using a leather pouch can prevent this from happening (I was using the mesh cover case).

thats strange? a bit of plastic with those dimensions shouldn't bend at all, unless put under direct heat and pressure? :S
can you post pictures taken and a picture of the lens?
I don't have another camera with me to photograph the lens. Besides, it is hard to see the bend, you need the correct angle for the light to hit it and be able to see. But attached is a picture I took with the cell. Kind of artsy...
I would have thought that if it did actually have a bend in it (which seems like an awfully difficult thing to have done), that it would cause a distortion and not just producing a blurry pic like that.
Looks more like something has been smeared across the lens cover.
It's not the lens that bended, it's the protective screen on top of the lense. Looks like glass to me, but it's possible to be plastic. Any way, i doubt it could bend unless you put a lot of pressure on it.
As I said, it was in the front pocket of a not so tight pants, so there might be little pressure, normal pressure as every cell phone suffers in this situation, but nothing exceptional, not much. Nobody sat on my lap as well... That would be a worthy reason at least.

My point in posting is that it happened. Just trying let others know to not make the same mistake. It is not as solid a construction as, say, the HTC HD2. It needs more care.

PS: And no heat also, not a teenager anymore to have so much heat near the crotch area...
PPS: Yes, it is the protective screen. My hope is I can get rid of it, and have my camera back. Unprotected, but taking photos, with lots of care from now on...
OP, stupid question: that lens glass out of the box was protected with a transparent plastic film I think, just like the screen. Did you remove it?
Can you make a shot of the lens using a bathroom mirror perhaps, in macro mode?

I agree with your here. The way Samsung designed the back of the phone makes it very easy to scratch/ even bend (like it happened to you) the protective screen. I had a HTC Touch HD before and the back of the camera could never touch the surface where the phone was put. With Samsung if you put your phone on a rugged area you might end up damaging the protective screen easily.
Have you been using the LED as a torch or anything like that? Perhaps the heat could have warped the plastic?

Sure, I took the plastic out. I saw no point in having a very good phone camera weakened by the plastic.
I tried to take the photo you asked, but was not successful. But as I said it was a very small bend, which makes the light enter the lens like a prism. Very difficult to photograph with a normal camera.
Actually, there was a power outage in the area I'm in now, but I don't recollect to use torch that much... I remember I used it for a while, the used some screen light, then on to Kindle. Id on't suppose it was torch, but could it really be so silly like this?!

Wow, I just tried pushing on mine with my nail, it moves a teeny tiny bit, but it springs right back up Maybe something in your pocket just happened to touch the middle of that little piece of plastic, and just managed to apply enough force to bend it beyond the recovery point, so your plastic piece did not spring back up.
I fully understand what you mean now. But not sure what your options are. It is clearly a physical damage. I would not advise trying to take that piece out and bend it straight, you will mess up the actual lens.

they wont know if you dont tell them plus they wont inspect the phone in that detail closely at the camera, worth a try. IF you bough it from a store, bring it back there and get a replacement.

I would try to replace it if I had bought it in my country. I bought it through a friend from Xpansys US (a UK phone), and I'm now in Brazil. I guess I would have so many troubles with customs here to send it out and back with no guarantee to have it replaced...
My idea is not to take the plastic out, and try to fix it. It is to just take out. I will have a hole there, but there will be nothing distorting light that comes into the lens. I will have to be extra careful, but considering how easy the plastic which was supposed to protect the camera was damaged, extra care is the name of this phone for me.
And I'm not complaining about SGS2's plastic finish as opposed to the metal/glass ones of iPhone or HTC. I actually like this, including the back cover. After you get used to it, it is kind of cool. And it is light. I just wished there was a cover or that Samsung used a hard glass on the camera, or perhaps that the plastic was so tiny and receeded that nothing could reach it. I always like the way Sony and Nokia used to put a sliding cover over the camera lens in their phones. With such a thin phone as ours, I wouldn't mind the extra thickness. Or like my HTC Kaiser, where the plastic was actually on the cover. If it was scratched or broken you could replace the back cover... Sorry, just venting my frustration.
Don't leave that hole uncovered. Your lens will get dirty in no time. Pocket lint , dust and dirt will accumulate in there and break the lens autofocus mechanism. Just don't even think about leaving that hole uncovered.
Does your S5 battery door creak/squeak when you put pressure in certain areas?
I have one that does creak/squeak when you put pressure where the Samsung logo is (under the auto focus), and another S5 that doesnt.
Does yours?

Nope, mine doesn't make any noise at all when I put pressure on it. Like eyecon said above, you sure it's on securely? If so, perhaps there's a defect with your back cover. But yeah, that's definitely not normal behavior.
Ya if it squeaks, I'd get it exchanged since it may not be closing and snapping in properly, thus negative the water resistant seal

no issues here, my battery door is strongly in place. But i do have some doubt about the rubber gasket in the back, if you guys want to take a look at my thread and post your findings it would be greatly appreciated

Mine does. I went to the store and asked for another to check on it and it did the same thing in the same location (in the middle of the power button side). I switched two covers on two phones and all combinations were with the exact same problem. Guess a bad batch or who knows what. It's driving me crazy . I'm waiting for my UAG case which I guess will cover up the issue.
Mine does. And it irritates me like anything. Going to the store to get it replaced.

I have the same problem and the Samsung support mean to me, I must send my phone to the Samsung repair. They are crazy, I don't like to send the complete phone to change 1 back cover, next week I wend to the provider where I bought the phone and then I see, maybe they'll change the cover
Yup, have that too but it doesn`t bother me a bit. I use a flipcase or s-view case anyway.
My wireless charging back cover creaks like mad. Worse place are just below the power button and above the camera lens.

A phone that creaks bothers me a lot.
Today I started to notice this on my s5. It's mostly on the right side, but it can squeak a little if pressed in the middle. It's not something that is very audible but what worries me is if waterproofing is compromised or not.
Also, it's fully snapped on and o checked that multiple times
EDIT : Just noticed that pressing on the heart rate area, the case gives in a bit and has a small gap. I poured a bit of water on top of it to see if it would leak a lot of water (haven't used the phone on water or tested the waterproof before) and after i take out the case a bit of water entered through there. It wasn't much, but maybe if it was submerged in a bit more water it would leak more inside and i don't know if it would reach the battery or not. Is it normal for water to enter there? Or is there a problem in the case?
Also, in most all of the inserts the cover clicks when i put it back on, except on that right side that i mentioned. Funny enough, the water leak on the heart rate sensor is on the left side of it.

Anyone can tell me if this is "normal" or if i should take it to warranty? Is a back case even covered under warranty?

Mine creaks on the right side as well, and I made sure the case is fully snapped all around. And just like yours, in most all of the inserts the cover clicks when i put it back on, except on that right side. Its annoying at times, but I learned to ignore it most of the time. I wnot bother exchanging or returning. Had the phone for couple months now.

Its something that only a few people seem to experience because i haven't found many reports of it, only a few. Probably some batches of phones with a production problem or not so good quality control, i don't know =/ But i do know that all the clips are snapped on or at least look like it.
I actually contacted Samsung about it but got the generic and expected reply to take it to a repair center to analyse the phone - which i didn't. My main concern would be any problems with waterproofing, but i just putted on a case and don't think much about it now actually.
So I've had my S5 for over 2 months. I'm always very careful with my stuff. I had the original cover on the phone and once a week I would run it under cold water to wash off any grime or dirt. Everything would be fine.
Now I got the wireless charging cover and I did the same routine. I made 1000% sure it was sealed completely. Now I start to experience slow down and freezing. So much so I have to remove the battery to restart. So I take off the cover and I see water on the battery. Not a lot but this is supposed to be wster resistant. I also notice some water where the cover snaps on to the phone. I dry it all off..I also called Verizon who said I'd have to go to the store to check for water damage which I say to myself Huh? But it's water resistant. Anyways I go to the store and they see nothing wrong with it. They said I can get a like new replacement but I feel that unfair since I spent my money and its not even 3 months old.
I noticed when I got home that by the speaker win the wireless cover it's not flush against he phone. The snaps are all in place but still there's a considerable gap between the cover and phone. Then I took the cover off and put the regular cover back on and there was no gap. It's flush against. Now is it possible hbis is a defect?
And should I accept the replacement device? Right now he phone is Ok but I'm worried no one wants a damaged phone.
Also my boot screen says custom even though I haven't rooted. I even used a root checker to make sure. Only thing I did was turn off some apps and install nova.
Weird? Advice?

Well, first of all. The extended battery and cover for it were said a lonnnng time ago to not be water tight. So that's probably part of your problem.
Secondly, I would recommend using Computer screen cleaning wipes, or a microfiber cloth and a little bit of windex or other non-harmful glass cleaner to clean it instead of running cold water over it..
The more you can control what is cleaning it, the better off you are. A little more than A LOT.

I'm running the stock battery and the wireless cover. I've read a lot of places it keeps the wireless seal. In fact the Samsung site States the same.

My apologies, it is still early.
I have still read on these forums that despite the claim by Samsung that it will hold the seal, users were saying it doesn't. Perhaps do a search for it and see what they say?

if you are using an official samsung accessory, you can send it back to samsung for repair. they will replace damaged parts with new ones. or you can go to verizon and get the like new one. either way, i wouldn't hold on to it if it has water damage and is acting flakey. it will never be right and by the time you get fed up with it you are out of warranty. replace it. and really, if verizon gives you a phone that is in as good a shape as the one you have, and works perfectly, who cares if someone else tried it and didn't like it and returned it.

I spoke to Samsung and they basically said I got a defective cover which honestly is BS. They said they can repair the phone but I wouldn't have access to a replacement and they don't provide replacements. Honestly I've always liked Samsung but now I'm thinking should I just take the replacement, sell it and get the LG G3 or something.

At least samsung is willing to repair the phone. They could have just said it was your fault for not installing the cover correctly. I sent them a 16gb S3 a while back that I bricked. They fixed it and sent it back to me as a 32gb model. Did right by me. You aren't going to be any worse for taking the replacement verizon will give you. It will still have the same warranty plus it has the benefit of additional QA testing from factory.

Just making this post to bring to light a common manufacturing defect I've discovered in at least two Xperia Z3 D6653 phones around the wrist strap hole. Apparently it's not completely sealed, and will leak air and water. As a hacky solution I've taped over the hole with electric tape, and that seals the device. I assume it's present in many more phones if the same problem showed up in mine. Just wanted to get the info out there before people start submerging their new phones.

Wow. I can get the same thing to happen when I press against the lanyard hole vs not. However, before finding out about this, I previously dunked this phone in water with a video playing for about a minute and it continued to work fine. Was it only a matter of time before water would get it and make my phone fail? I'm not sure. But there I can't think of a good reason why the pressure will increase and stay high with the lanyard hole closed vs open and the pressure equalizes. I have the D6616.

I previously used the first phone underwater very briefly (about 30-60 seconds), and it seemed just fine. Though I tried it later for about 5 straight minutes and it started getting very hot in the lower left hand corner and it made a buzzing sound from that same area around the hole. It also wasn't very deep at all, only about 3-4 inches of water.

I was the one on your YT vid that suggested using black RTV silicone, in place of electrical tape, to seal up this apparent hole. RTV silicone is rubbery when dry and yet can easily be removed when needed and will not damage the phone. As well, it is black so it will match the phones body to some degree. If needed, get a toothpick and pop out what you filled in. If not, leave it forever and seal up the hole.
That's a good idea but I'm annoyed by the fact that we have to resort to these fixes for something that shouldn't be a problem in the first place.
How are you 100% positive that just because it leaks air, it is not waterproof. I fish a lot and wear breathable wader that do not let water in but it is not air tight since it lets water vapor/air out. Water molecule is relatively large compare to air molecule.
Someone should make a tiny rubber plug, I'd buy one just to ease my paranoid side.
aquaholik (interesting SN to point this out) made a good comment as well, things can be watertight but not necessarily airtight and this could be by design to let the internals breathe
Agree with aquaholik. And the most important part, shouldn't the barometer sensor have access to air? How else can it measure the pressure of air?

use my RTV Silicone idea and you will get just that. It will form the area and make an impression and IF you opt to take it out, you would have a "plug" of sorts.
My phone has this behaviour as well. I already had it in water briefly.
This might be a seal/mebrane to account for heavy pressure changes.

I'm copying my response to a reddit post I made about the video...
...the first (now non-functional phone) only lasted about 5 minutes in about 3-4 inches of water. When I pulled it out of the water, it was buzzing and really hot in the lower left corner, which is exactly where the lanyard hole is.
This is very strong evidence that water got in through that hole, especially since the rest of the phone is so well sealed. Plus lasting only 5 minutes at that depth is clearly below the rated performance of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.
When I got the first phone, I tested the waterproofing of the device by putting it in a dish of water for about a minute, and it seemed just fine after coming out. So I assumed it was sealed, but it simply took much longer for water to enter.
Given my experience with the first phone, I'd rather play it safe and just tape over the hole than risk damaging yet another device in conditions that are well within spec.
Yeah, I totally understand where you are coming from. But if there was indeed a membrane/valve to counter dramatic pressure changes, then closing this pathway could lead to new problems.

That's true if it's by design. Which it may still be.
However, I'm going to just run 100% with it plugged and see if anything happens. I really can't afford to lose yet another phone in just a few weeks, and If I do get any negative side effects, I'll be sure to report back.
I'm so paranoid. After reading everywhere complains about the questionable waterproof of the Z3, I decided to give it a ride and check out if it really survives, as I still have the return policy and I was really scared but I put it in water, not to deep, took a little bucket and filled it with about 10-15 cm water and waited for about a minute. As I expected it survived well and I didn't see any abnormalities. Then I dried it up using a microfiber towel and everything works fine. I'll see the next days if I find something strange but everything seems fine. Speakers and microphone work well.
Send your other one through sony repair.
They should cover it as long as the indicators arent red.
They repaired my original Z which displayed water damage, but because the indicators didnt turn, fixed it.
Its clearly a manufacture defect if it is the lanyard hole being open which is causing the problem.

they should cover it even if the indicators are red, they market it as a water resistant device.
I see this is a very common problem with these phones. Except mine had snapped in half, and I was barely able to get the microSD card out. Now my SIM is stuck inside, along with the lower half of the tray. Issue is it's no longer under warranty. I've tried a few things, like holding it upside down and lightly thumping the top of the back/front with my palm. but that ****er just won't pop out. I'm leery of sticking anything inside there for fear of damaging anything, let alone attempting to pull it out with a cut credit card and a sliver of glue. I'm thinking I'll take it to a repair shop, but I heard that once it's taken apart, it loses its waterproof seal. Can anyone confirm this? Or offer some other advice?

With fricking care I put a drop of super glue on a toothpick and fished mine out is how I did mine 3 times. I've broke 4 trays. I got a feeling it's something to do with sd cards ever since I quit using a SD card I haven't broke not 1. It's a punk ***** and I don't know why Samsung wouldn't use the metal ttys like in the past. I have several posts on this issue myself.
Yes once disassembled you lose the water proofing. I had to send mine in for warranty and needed my sim out of it obviously. And those tards of coarse said of the tray is broke the warranty was voided so I did everything in my power to remove it. But I did 3 times over

I'm very leery of using anything to do with glue, to be honest. Though that looks like I will have to do exactly that, unfortunately.

I mean I literally used like a quarter drop on the very top tip. The credit card idea seams even better a bit more surface area. The second time my tray got stuck totally and I bit the bullet and forced it out and it split in the middle between the SD and sim. Left the second half in it. The eject button doesn't work any more when I put my tool in now I have to angle it and pull. I haven't broke it now in like 6 months since I put my SD card in my Ps vita
I have never rough housed mine in the end I have probably removed my trays about 15 times since owning this device.
This is one of the biggest flaws with this device imo and I can't find a compatible aluminum tray anywhere
Could try pinching it out with two sewing needles?
Have done this with an iPhone for someone before. :crying:
Just make sure phone's off to avoid shorting anything...

I'm gonna get a pair of eyebrow pluckers, or whatever you call those really thin tweezers, and try to pluck it out that way. There is a small part of one side that is close to the top of the slot (as it broke off... diagonally, sort of), so hopefully I can grab ahold of that.

No such luck. It's really hard to see in there and even with a bright light and magnifying glass, I can't seem to find it. Looks like I'll have to take it to a repair shop and lose the waterproof seal, since they'll have to take it apart.

I guess I got lucky. Food for thought after the fact. Get a LifeProof case. Their water proof at least give back some of the resistancy. That's what I got on mine... I swapped frames and screens on Mine
get a new glass back with the ip68 tape. cost around $10 and waterproofing stays intact. pull the old one off and just make sure you clean the bonding area well.
I've done this 2x with mine and have no issues with water intrusion.

Can you point me in the direction of a tutorial? For future reference and for anyone else who may have to do this as well? I've already had mine repaired and all's well, but I think this info would come in handy for others (including me if it happens again). The fact that people are having to do stuff like this multiple times with their phones is rather frightening.

Not sure on the rules for posting links, but if you search youtube for "S8 back glass replacement" you can find plenty of videos. I personally used the ifixit teardown guide just to familiarize myself with any cables or things to watch out for.
For the back glass itself, just make sure you get one with the camera lens pre-installed and with ip68 tape. Price for the one i bought is currently $10.02 on ebay.

Yeah. I will second this. I do all my own repairs. But in this case I just don't care. I'm not interested in reselling. Or anything. This will be a backup in a few months. Time to move on. ???
It stays in the lifeproof so it's water resistant and I don't have to see it.
Solved!
1) Heat a needle, or a tiny flathead screwdriver, and stick it in.
2) Wait 1 minute.
3) Pull out needle or screwdriver to find sim attached and out!
