[Q] Internal Memory Loss - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I am at a loss here. I have an SGH-i337 (AT&T GS4) 64gb, when I go to the Storage settings it shows that I only have 24.03gb available. That does not sound right to me. I understand that system files and bloatware will take a few gb's but nearly 40gb?! If this is correct then I feel severely wronged by both Samsung and AT&T. If there is something wrong and there is a way to remedy it I would greatly appreciate the insight, thank you.

There's a 64 GB version?

I am a bit confused to
There is no att 64 gb model ( unless there is and I don;t know) and if you did get that much usable gb then it is probably a 'lemon' and you should return it for exchange.

That definitely sounds like a 32 GB model..

Actually, I have just removed my foot from my mouth. I was thinking of my 64gb microSD card when I was writing about my dilema. I in fact have a 32gb S4. I am still confused on just how much space is being utilized by system settings and bloatware. Is 7+ GB the norm for these things? And thank you joeybear23 for pointing out my inaccuracy .

Will The Nexus 4's storage(my case 8gb) ever affect OS updates.

I am getting kinda worried, that future updates of Android will run slow on my phone cause its only 8GB, doesn't each update become a bigger file and take up more space? I use alot of cloud and streaming services so I dont need much on board storage so I didnt feel compelled to pay 50 bucks for 8gb of storage when I know it too expensive to pay for just that amount of storage. So my question is am I safe with this storage considering future OS updates.
The OS is a few hundred megabytes. You've got nothing to worry about.

The OS it's self is bigger than a few hundred megs, but updates do your device do not necessarily mean your OS is taking up more space. Just because your os is, say, 500 megs and you downloaded a 100 meg update your new total is almost certainly less that 600, depending on the update much of that code is replacing existing code.
Also, performance is not dependent on the amount of HDD space you have available, this is even more true on flash memory. If you max it out to a 100% you're going to have problems, but other than that it matters very little.

Formatted capacity of an 8gb drive is probably closer to 7.5, less some space for the OS + recovery partition + included Google apps, and likely some additional space reserved for future OS updates (though this is just speculation).
Isn't the space for the OS set aside from the usable storage?

For this phone (8 GB model), there's only ~5.5 GB available to user for sdcard-like storage.

No. On older devices you could change mtd and assign size for system, cache, and data(user storage) but, that is not available for the newer devices. You'll have to deal with what Google/lge gave you or switch to 16gb.

It was for the older mtd devices like n1, g1, my touch, hero, etc. I haven't seen recent attempts for emmc support for newer devices, could be that the partitions aren't modifiable anymore. Fire rat stated the cmtd patch on xda but I don't think he does anymore hacks here.

You'll have to do some research on custom mtd on Google, it's been awhile so I've forgotten most of the details. However a custom SPL or bootloader were used to allow custom partitions to be made via a text file.

By the time a Android gets that big (in Gigabytes) you would have a different phone with about 128 if not 256 gb of storage
Our system partition is in the mid to upper 800s mb.
It is the same for both the 8gb and 16gb models.
Actual Usable Storage of Nexus and Other Phones

So it's almost the end of the journey

Alright guys,
I'll be due for upgrade in next month. I wanted to discuss it with you.
Which phone are you going for after this adorable phone. Being honest will easily and comfortably serve another year.
I would be enticed to get the s4 but the lack of full sources from Samsung seems going to repeat itself again.
I dropped this thread hear as people will biased towards their phones in the respected forums.
Many thanks
Tell me what u think guys.

I'd wait for at least the next Nexus it's not really worth "upgrading". Whatever you're gonna "upgrade" to except Nexus or Samsung, you'll wait forever for the next Android version, unlike the S3 users.

Read the S4 forums in detail, there are a couple of dealbreakers for me, at the moment.
Screen seems to have issues, smearing and red pixels not turning completely off on black images. Hopefully they are software related (wouldn't surprise anyone) but they could be defects.
It seems the S4 is a greatly rushed product, what a shame...

Same here, will wait till the 32gb version, if they release one.. But fear we will never see one..
Didn't Sammy promise a 32gb S3..?
I might just wait otherwise until the S5, the S3 is still a great phone and I'm tied for another year on contract.
Once the ports come for 4.2 and eventually 5.0 this will make my phone seem like a new one anyway..

I already have a 64gb mem card thanks.. but all programs get installed to the internal memory and I have some bigs games and i'm getting fed up of making space.. Also you only get to use 11gb, not 16gb
Because I need my mem card to be formatted FAT32 so my laptop can read it I can't save files bigger than 4gb on it, therefore no HD films which i have to download to internal mem, which as that stands I don't have a 4gb spare anyway..
Using directory bind there is absolutely no need for bigger internal space

It looks nice, but the camera isn't great, battery life is hit and miss, I hate the button layout (why put the power button on the top left, yuck) and no room for extra memory.
none of the gpu s out there is enough for 1080p atm so ill stick with s3 better game performance than new phones and really very little difference on browser performance doesnt worth for upgrading atm.
HTC one also has no removable back cover/battery, so there's another negative. I don't like the trend towards 'apple'-fying new phones, having expandable memory & removable battery are very important for me!
I will keep my S3 32GB GT-9300I at least until S5, and who knows maybe untill S6 if i don't have problems with it.
it's perfect for me.

About the nexus 4?

Would it be smarter for me to order the nexus 4 or just get the s4? Can any of you give me some of your input on the nexus 4 since you've had yours? Are you pleased with it or do you sometimes regret your decision on getting the nexus 4? One more thing, right now I have the s3 and is no 4g really that much of a dealbreker?
Do a search as this question has been asked quite a few times....but in a nutshell if you prefer vanilla over bloatware, great dev support and the latest updates as soon they are released then get a nexus....can't really speak on the s4. Hope it helps..

Dude the S4 is so crippled and packed with 7GB of OS and mostly bloatware that you have too root it and strip down all the not needed apps and widgets. I had all the Galaxy devices but i`am gona skip the S4. The Nexus 4 is realy a breath of fresh air and 50% cheaper. I had the S3 too but wouldnt trade my N4 for one.

the phone storage capacity has nothing to do with any update schedule. The people you see that have updates are probably newbs that are just now finding a way to receive the initial OTA MDL
New updates coming from Samsung and AT&T
I spoke with a source inside AT&T and they claim due to the amount of complaints and returns on both the 16 and 32g phones they are working to correct the freezes and system app crapouts. When is still a mistery
By inside ATT you meant behind the counter at your local ATT vendor.

That is funny. I have not had one freeze or any single problem. Not one. And my ATT store has had no returns or complaints. They have even run out of some models.
You realize they will tell you want to hear if you lead them. And the counter guys are not long termers so they will even make stuff up.
Also there are no threads on xda about stability issues, so your area must be like Bermuda triangle for cell phones.

flashing an international ROM and freezing unused apps works great to cut lag, and the newer XXUBMEA intl ROMs do allow many apps to be installed on SD card, so it does free SOME storage up (but not a whole lot more than what it came with stock, ie about 9GB for the 16GB version and 25GB for the 32GB version)
