Gmail notifications not appearing. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been flash Roms lately and now my Gmail notifications aren't showing up and are marked as read even before I read them. This is happening on the desktop as well. When I flash Roms I used go backup to restore my apps and data. But know the only thing I don't get is Gmail notifications. I went to setting and the noticed ions for Gmail was checked. Also went to the label setting and check notifications on the inbox and priority inbox. Any help for this problem?

pop3 keeps deleting my inbox

I just started a gmail account and set it to forward to my 8125. i've had pop accounts on my phone before and it kept my emails. now, for some reason, I will receive an email, read it, then it's gone. The phone seems to be deleting my emails. any suggestions?
Yep, that's gmail. Do a search, there's a bunch of things you can do that sorta kinda make it work the way you'd think pop3 should instead of the way gmail actually does.
Hey, go into the setting ontop of the page in gmail and then go to fowarding and pop settings , there is an option to turn off that feature and keep a copy in your gmail inbox

Gmail Solution

Here it is. Go Into your Gmail settings on your desktop computer. click on settings in the upper right corner, click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP, disable IMAP and enable POP for all email. I also selected delete Gmail when accessed with POP.
This solves the problem with email notification not disappearing immediately after you click on the email, it gets you all your email promptly and it does not show emails in your inbox, for ex. you have 3 unread emails, you go to check and there are not any? So it fixes that issue. It syncs perfectly with the desktop sever. I had constant problem with above issues. So yeah the culprit seems to be IMAP. I tested this on Froyo and 2.1 Vanilla. Works for both. I imagine it will work on Sense too.
I just noticed this problem last night.. the Gmail Unread Count widget tells me 6 new emails, the Gmail app says Inbox (6) at the top, but there are no unread messages! Going to Gmail on my desktop shows no mention of these 6 supposedly unread emails.
Just tried your trick, but the problem's still there. Running Froyo here.

I'm in the US, maybe that makes a difference. Also on stock froyo. It works perfect now. Make sure you have changed your settings correctly. I checked settings again and posted information is correct.

So what exactly is the gmail problem that requires this solution? Your description is quite convoluted and confusing. Email notification not disappearing when you expect it to, or messages not showing in your inbox? Either way seems to me like nxt says. Probably just a case of your mail being hidden in your SPAM label.
Notification tells me there is new gmail. I tap the notification and read the mail. Return to home screen and notification has gone. Bog standard and it works perfectly fine for me.

I'm in the U.S. too, on T-Mo.
I tried the old 'lets reboot and see what happens', and now it's all working perfectly. Thanks for the tip!
Does no-one else use gmail push via the normal email app?
androidforums.com/motorola-droid/36326-how-get-push-gmail-email-app.html
I guess there's a lack of features when compared?

Cool. Good you figured it out. I'm glad helped out someone. I couldn't figure out why everytime I checked my inbox there wouldn't be any messages. I went to desktop and saw the messages in my inbox that I had already read. Also once you click on notification you have to hit back arrow to get the notification to disappear. Solved that as well.

This happens to all versions of android. Its just not syncing with gmail correctly, so you phone shows no new emails, but says thier is 5 unread. If you log on to gmail you will see emails you marked as read unread. All you got to do to fix is to mark them as read from within gmail web client.

Set it to POP and it fixes that issue. I don't get that anymore. Everything is working perfectly now.

What do you mean by "Phone....says there is 5 unread". I assume you mean the Gmail client on your phone lists them in BOLD? If so, how can you say in the next breath "If you log on to gmail you will see emails you marked as read unread" ? You have just said they are unread on the Phone side, so why would you expect to see them as marked read in gmail web client.
I can toggle messages on the phone between read and unread and within a few seconds the changes are reflected in the gmail web client. So all good here.
Perhaps it can happen to all version but it does not happen to everyone. If it was a widespread issue, I think we would be hearing a lot more fuss about it. My Gmail works fine and does not do what you describe. I have IMAP enabled.

Honestly, the stock GMail app works like a charm for me; I haven't had to do any changing on my accounts. Heck, I was able to sync my University of Phoenix e-mail account as we use GMail as well.
Easy fix
All you have to do is select on labels, go to all mail, it will show a message you have previously read as unread. Then just mark it read again and problem is solved.

This has happened to me on a few occasions too. What he means is that when you get a Gmail notification THEN you check it with your phone and lets say you delete it with your phone. However, the next time you get sent an email and get a notification, when you check your gmail it will list your unread emails as (2) instead of (1). When you go into your gmail application to check, it also says unread (2), BUT you will only see one email.
Now if you go and check your Gmail using your computer, you will see both the emails, the one you read then deleted and the one you just received.
I know this is not a widespread problem because this has happened intermittently to me and has not happened for a while.
But good job on finding a fix for those that do suffer this small but annoying sync problem.

This is the bit where you guys have me confused. The only way I can tell unread messages in the gmail on my phone is by the bolding and the corresponding number in brackets in the header. So I cannot see how you can get the conflicting info within the gmail app itself on the phone?

Clearly I am missing something obvious. I can conceive how the Gmail notification bar indicator count could differ. But I cant see where you see the difference within the android gmail app itself. Is it that you get a different number of bold messages to the number in brackets?
In any case - main thing is you got the problem sorted I guess.
I used to get the gmail error but since upgrading to 2.2 beta it works so smoothly now.
Why are you redirecting your gmail account to the email application through exchange anyways?
The gmail application supports push.

Basically the number in the brackets show you have 2 unread emails but your phone gmail client isn't showing any unread messages. They are all gray and read. Then if you log on to the web client you will see 2 unread messages.
Its just a simple sync issue.
Better solution to the sync issue (where for example the phone says Inbox(2) but shows no unread messages):
Manage applications, filter all, Gmail Storage. Clear data. Then re-open Gmail and let it resync. This always fixes it for me.
I only ever get this problem after a) flashing a new ROM or backup, or b) turning on a phone I haven't used in a while.

Gmail Not Pushing/Syncing

I have noticed that in the past couple days that the gmail app is not autosyncing the new messages. I am not recieving notifications for new messages. If i hit refresh in gmail it downloads all the new messages.
I have checked all the sync setting in Settings/Accounts and Sync and everything is on and set correctly. Notifications are also set correctly in gmail.
I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling gmail but the problem persists. Anybody else having this problem also and know of a solution?

Go into the application settings and clear the data from the phone. Settings --> Applications --> Manage Applications --> GMail
The phone will then sync again from the servers.
I was having this issue too and it stemmed from a bad rom flash. After wiping completely and reflashing, it was fine.

[Q] Strange e-mail/message behaviors

OK, had the S4A for about a week. Lots to like coming from my S2, but a few niggling things that irk me.The main one is the e-mail app notifications. I had the combined Inbox on my S2, but all it ever showed me on the widget was when there were new e-mails. For some reason, the S4A also combines the new text messages count into the e-mail widget icon making it look as if there are new e-mails. Even if I read the text messages they still pop up in the widget count until I also delete them through the e-mail app. This is annoying as hell, obviously. Is there any way to turn this behavior off? I only want to see a message count on the e-mail widget for actual e-mails. What's the point of having messages show up in the e-mail app? I can't do anything but read and delete them (doesn't delete the actual message, just its appearance in the e-mail app). I still have to go to the messaging app to reply, forward, etc.
The other problem is the e-mail app itself. I have Push turned off and one of my accounts set to manual retrieval. Still, it downloads e-mail without me doing anything. I have to turn off sync completely to stop it, which is a pain as I have to remember to turn it on to retrieve e-mails and then it gets everything going back 24 hours (minimum setting) whether it is new or not. This using an Outlook account. If e-mail retrieval is set to manual why would the phone retrieve e-mails as if set to push? It should do nothing regardless of whether sync is on or not. That's how it worked on my S2.
TIA
Nothing? Could someone just verify that this is the way their S4A works, as well? It just makes no sense to me why it does this.

Email notifications from Gmail app not always working.

I don't know if I am missing a setting but many times I will have no email notification and there are new unread emails in the gmail app. I have exchange and gmail addresses setup and I think it happens with all of them or it is just the exchange emails.
I went into all the gmail email settings and selected notification for every email and not just once, the exchange emails do not have this option. I also have vibrate selected but I feel no vibration when they come in. I put the gmail app on priority notification but that didn't help.
I have a 5X also that worked perfectly up until the December update, then my email notifications broke on that phone. I ordered a 6P because I wanted to try it out and I did not accept the December update thinking that was the problem but the 6P has the same email notification issue.
Anyone else getting intermittent email notifications? Is there a setting I am missing or something? Could this be because of doze?
Thanks

I'm beginning to think that it's an Exchange Server 2010 issue...as I've noticed that all hosted Exchange providers are going to be migrating to an Outlook.com environment. If your Exchange Server provider is on 2010, they'll likely be migrating you over the next 3-6 months...
If you want this before that time, you'll need to move your Exchange email manually to Outlook.com and be responsible for your email backups.
I believe that the same holds true for corporate Exchange environments.

I'm also getting lack of notifications from the GMail app (official) and it's kind of annoying. Any Fix?
Count me in. Tried a clear cache in Gmail, tried phone wipe cache but no difference.
I've seen similar problems around. I have my gmail IMAP accounts and 3 POP accounts and none of them syncs. I have to manually refresh the gmail app.
I'm another user with the issue. stock gmail and not rooted.
No notifications, wonder if gmail is having issues.
It has to be something on Google's end. As of yesterday, I'm having the issue with both gmail and inbox. Tried clearing data, disabling & reenabling sync, etc.. My wife has been complaining about exchange issues since last week.
Check to make sure you have gmail syncing on in accounts under the phone settings. Also make sure you did not turn off notifications from the app manager.
I am experiencing this also. I think other google push notifications are flaky too. I know my Google Opinion Rewards app has stopped notifying me. I open the app and that is when I see surveys.

I am seeing this issue on both Nexus 6P and 5X, with both exchange accounts, and actual Gmail accounts
Another thing I find odd is this... I use Nova Launcher with unread counts. Nova will show me I have an unread message, but I never get notified from Inbox.

I too am having this issue, I was thinking it was an issue with Google Fi being that I noticed the issue about the time when they replaced my SIM card due to another issue. But now this sounds like it might be a bigger issue.
I just went into the mail app, then to my google account, I then disabled and re-enabled notifications and for the last half hour or so I have been receiving alerts for mail. can someone else test and see what your results are?
EDIT: I may have spoken too soon, I just received 2 emails and didn't receive alerts.
I am going to have to resort to using a third party email app, downloaded cloudmagic and setup my hotmail on it and notifications are working fine with that app. No gmail notification but when I open the Gmail app there is the new unread email. This is happening with exchange and gmail accounts.
Did a Google search and it appears this is a pretty wide spread issue with Nexus 6p and 5X owners.

I am a Moto X Pure owner and I've seen a couple MXPE users complaining about the same. So it's not device oriented, more a "stock" Android issue. At least as I haven't seen other device users having the same problem.
It's really frustrating as I have 4 e-mail accounts and I'm not used to checking them manually.
I went to Settings->Accounts and I disabled auto-sync, then re-enabled it. I got one mail on time after that, but at the time the screen was on. So can't be sure if it helped or not.
Same issues with devices running 6.0.1 but older devices running 5.1.1 have no issues at all. Gmail, IMAP, Nine all have delayed notification or no notifications unless I manually check and sync.
Here's a link to the to the issue tracker if anyone wants to star and comment to get this some more attention.

Just bought a new nexus 6p and set it all up. Using the default gmail app for all my accounts and I'm getting notifications for all other accounts except for gmail. It's strange. I get instant notifications for the same gmail account on my BlackBerry no issues. So it is an issue with the gmail app for Android. When can we expect a fix?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Mine has been good since disabling and re-enabling notifications under my account in the mail app, some messages seem to be delayed but I am getting alerts.
Open the mail app, open settings, select your email account, 3rd item down should be notifications and it should be turned on, touch it to turn it off, let it sit a few moments to register the change, touch it again to re-enable notifications. Repeat this for all email accounts (I also cleared the mail apps data in the main settings>apps menu) and I am working again.
please report back if this helped.

Cloudmagic seems to be the only app that has consistent notifications. Tried bluemail and typeapp and even those didn't work, cloudmagic is ok but it doesn't have the ability to swipe to the next email when inside a message.
same issue here. any news?
