MTP Problem - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I just gut my Nexus 4 and wanted to connect it to my PC.
It installed the drivers, but it wasn't recognized as a MTP device, so I can't access the storage.
It works fine on my Laptop.
Both have Windows 7 64-Bit installed.
I also got a Nexus 7, which works just fine.
I couldn't find any solution for my problem.
Any idea what to do?
Thank you!

I solved it, even though I'm not sure how.
I just uninstalled and reinstalled the driver over and over again.

Next time I would try a different port (preferably a USB 2.0 port) if you have one, but I am glad the drivers worked for you.
USBDview has been a great app for seeing what drivers are installed, and removing outdated bits and bobs.

[Q] i seem to be having trouble getting ADB to worko n my windows seven computer

It's probably just because I HAVENT USED IT IN AGES...but I have the USB driver package installed in my sdk and I guess I forget where to go from there. It works fine on my XP...I believe I'm missing the Nexus one drivers that usually install automatically but they aren't...am I?
Please and thank you for the help. I hate change :]
couldnt get adb to work on my win7 either, for some reason qtadb works perfectly, so if that suits your needs i would just use that.
Hm Ok it just keeps saying connect your phone. Could it be because I'm missing the nexus one drivers? Because they wouldn't install when I plugged my N1 in.

How do you get this phone to install on your pc?

Just got a Fascinate. Can't get the memory driver to install properly. Heck, the usb drivers wont either.
How does this work or is it busted atm? I have Win 7 32 and Vista 64. Both have the same issue. Just can't get the Fascinate to talk to either.
Thanks
Did you download the drivers from samsung? I have win 7 64-bit on two of my computers and it worked perfectly after installing the drivers from here: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SCH-I500RKAVZW
Nope. That does not install successfully. Weird.

I had the same problem I had to go to my device manager while my phone was plugged in and point the computer to the folder with the drivers in it...it didn't install automatically like I thought out would...

how many times do you have to ask the same question? see your other thrad for the answer.
Sorry about the double post. I did that one on the phone and thought it did not post.
I am using the cable that came with the phone. Regardless, the Samsung software will not install on either of my PCs. Is there a known issue with antivirus? Or am I just one of the unlucky that gets a stupid issue that takes forever to figure out?
The file got corrupted somehow. ReDLed it and cleaned the Reg. before I unzipped and installed it.
Took 45! minutes to install!! Still does not work. Sees the phone as a removable storage device. When I click on it the message is please insert a memory disk in it? oooook
I turned off usb debugging on the phone but same problem.
I do see the drivers as installed on my pc. No idea wtf to do now.
Both pcs recognize it as Samsung but neither will work with it. Do I need to get my old XP desktop in the closet just for this phone? lol
Changed usb setting from mass storage to sync with media center. Works now.

Nexus 4 usb storage doesn't show up in windows after Root

For some reason when i connect the phone the the computer, it wont show up MTP.. but for PTP it works.. When its connected the small window pops up alerting me the "nexus 4" was connected but thats it, the drive wont show up.
I think getting rid of the adb drivers I used so it doesnt show up as "android adb inferface" will solve the issue... but whenever I uninstall the drivers from device manager and delete
the usb drivers folder.. it still installs them right back when I connect the usb!
*edit* it detects on my dads computer just fine and MTP works.. i think it has to do with the adb drivers i installed.. wish i knew how to uninstall them for good so windows wouldnt automatically install them again even with deleting the drivers folder off my harddisk
Bump. Tried everything to no luck

Did you find a solution to this? I am having the same problem. The original drivers that installed worked just fine over MTP but not adb. Now, abd works but my Nexus wont show up as an MTP device.

[Q] Nexus 7 MTP

Weird problem I'm having with Nexus 7 and MTP. So my girlfriend and I both have nexus 7. I recently Flashed my Nexus with AOKP and everything went smooth. Can connect my nexus 7 to my windows 7 ultimate 32 bit OS and it gets picked up and I can easily transfer files to and from. Last night I went to connect my girlfriends nexus 7 to same PC to transfer some movies for her and it would not pickup as MTP device. I switched from MTP to PTP. It gets picked up as PTP but I can't transfer movies to it, just pictures. So i changed it back to MTP and nada. In MTP mode the nexus gets picked up i see it in device manager as ADB device, nexus is charging while plugged in but does not show up in windows explorer. So i disconnected plugged in my nexus 7 and comes up just fine as MTP device. Switched back to hers and still nothing. So i thought it was her nexus. I decided to connect it to my mac and download the android file transfer app. That worked fine and I was able to transfer movies to it. connected it back to the windows machine and still nothing. I want to do a factory wipe on it and flash it but i really want to resolve this problem. I thought about just doing a factory reset to see if that fixes it but there has to be something else i can do. Also the only was I can get nexus root tool kit to pick it up to root and flash is to have it in PTP mode. any ideas? any help is greatly appreciated, thanks for listening!
Having a hard time thinking its a driver issue since my nexus gets picked up fine. wanted to add that I rebooted the pc and nexus with same result.
Try going to device manager and uninstall the drivers from your Nexus. Then unplug and replug it again and let it install its drivers again.

Try using USB Deview and delete all drivers pertaining to android. Then download the google usb drivers for Nexus 7 and see if it fixes the problem.
Try an app on the market called "stickmount" it should do the trick.

Just getting to see these replies, thanks guys! Will give these a shot now and report back what happens...wish me luck haha :good:
Another thing i just remembered it could be the cable your using. Speacialy if your nexus 7 are different i mean like one is 3g the other is wifi or one is 16 gb the other is 32 gb' so i would suggest using her original cable on her nexus 7 and same thing to you. About stickymount i dont think thats gonna work, kinda was thinking something else.

think i just made it worse used usb deview and now I can't get my nexus to show up as MTP device. Both nexus are 32gb wifi only. I used usb deview to uninstall all android and nexus 7 drivers...there were quite a few...downloaded nexus 7 drivers from asus site...when i plugged the nexus in windows installed its own driver, i tried to update the driver with driver from asus but windows indicated that the latest driver was already installed...I think i'll try installing the drivers from the root tool kit and see what happens ...ugh

something is different between the 2 nexus, which doesn't make sense. They're both 32gb/wifi. So I used usb deview to uninstall all drivers. Then useed Nexus root tool kit to install drivers (somewhat) only went through frist 3 steps or so and windows installed ADB and Nexus 7 MTP driver and I was able to see my girl friends Nexus now as MTP device and transfer files to and from...just to play safe i used the USB cable that came with hers. I then connected my nexus which originally worked fine (but then i jacked up the drivers and they both wouldn't connect) and now does not get picked up as Nexus MTP, rather only ADB device shows up for it. So it looks like windows only likes one of them? Very strange, I'll keep playing with it but doubt I will be able to get them both to be picked up by windows as MTP....gotta love windows

so the only thing i notcied is when her nexus is connected if you go to control panel then devices and printers hers is now seen as Nexus Portabl Media player (MTP) and when mine is connected it comes up as Nexus 7 Unspecified and only driver i can install or updated is ADB..where with her device it is seen as ADB in device manager and also comes up as portable device nexus 7. Now i know if i use usb deview and uninstall all drivers then install mine first mine would probably be fine and then hers would prob not work
I have the exact problem ... but under win8. I have two Nexus 7s which I didnot have any (connecting issue) on my previous win7/64.
After upgraded to win8, windows only mounst one and refuses to mount the other. I can remove all devices relating to the Nexus7 then win8 will
mount the next N7 then refuses the other (the nexus7 is recorgnized but not mounted). Seems like it indexes the first Nexus then afraid to mount
the other as it sees a difference.
No solution so far, except everytime I want to work with the other Nexus, I have to remove&re-install the driver.
It has no issue when I connect other Android devices (AsusTF101, Nook Color, Samsung 4 Player).. Just refusing the identical twin.

Yup, it appears that USB Debugging suffers some sort of identity crisis after a root or OTA to 4.3 - toggled debugging off & the MTP mount worked as advertised.
Had to revoke all debug authorizations and re-init for USB debugging and MTP to function together.
SIGH!
Cheers

I started experiencing this issue right after the OTA to 4.3 update on both my wife and I's rooted Nexus 7 Tablets, both first gen and current. The issue was resolved by removing the drivers from my computer and before reinstalling them revoking all ADB/USB debugging authorizations. I'll post the the steps I took.
1. Followed the Wug Fresh steps for removing Android related drivers (I have owned a lot of Android devices so I cleared the slate of everything)
2. Turned off debugging on both tablets with MTP on
3. Revoked USB debug authorizations on both devices
4. Connected the first gen N7, let drivers install
5. Turned on USB debugging while still connected
6. Repeat 4 & 5 for second gen
7. Both tablets connect with no issues and I have adb access to them
I suggest you have a look here.
this worked perfectly for me.

Nexus 4 won't connect to PC.

Hello, i have a very weird problem. My nexus 4 cant connect to pc as mass storage device.. It worked fine like 4 days ago.. I dont know what happened or what else i can try.. Already tried: usb debugging on/off, factory reset, usb settings in storage menu, different usb port, NOTHING HELPED! There are another weird thing that i spoted is that it only charges through usb when i have nothing selected in storage>usb connections menu, as soon as i try to select mtp or camera it stops from charging and nothing happens. Same problem for AC charging it wont charge when theres mtp or camera selected, and only charges as USB... I'm confused.. Are there any ways to get it working again?
I'm having the same problem.. I've just installed Windows 7 64 bit but it sees my Nexus 4 like Unknown Device.. I uninstalling the drivers and re installing them using Nexus Root Toolkit but no result for now..:crying:
Do you have a ROM or anything installed? I know with PA its a problem at the moment at times. A little more info would be nice. I never had a problem with Windows 7. I'm on Windows 8 now and i had an issue at first with it not showing up at times. But it seems to be fine now.
Just go in
Settings,
Dev options (if you not have it go in phone informations and press many times in row the Build Number, this activate Dev options)
and Disable USB Debugging,
then reconnect your phone, and the computer will see it
USB debbuging isnt working. i have no ROMS, stock android 4.3. And yes, now im running WIN 8, previuosly had 7, the problem occured after installing 8 and trying to plug it in. Its not showing in my computer neither in device Manager. I doesnt make any difference with, or without it pluged in, the only difference is that it will start charging, but then again ONLY when i disable everyting in storage>usb connections.
bump
do you have a fast charge app installed? it sounds like it's an issue related to fast charging via USB. if it's enabled you can't access anything on the phone via usb, but i think that requires to at least be rooted.
I'm on last PA 3.99-Rc1 and I just found out that if I go in Setting-Memory the appilcation shutdown .-. Never had this issue before .-.

Nothing, just read that it's a issue with PA while using last Franco Kernel nightly XD I'm going back to windows vista 32bit, so I believe the problem connecting my nexus 4 won't be any more an issue (Going back to Vista because for daily use it worked perfectly and every thing worked fine with the drivers, Windows 7 it's better, but too many issues with drivers bla bla bla XD)
I have always used the Windows Driver from the Google SDK (Google USB Driver- As of today, Revision 8) for my Windows 7 64 bit computer and have never had a problem. More importantly there is an Update Manager that comes with the SDK, that when you run, notifies you of newer Windows drivers as they are released. That way as Google issues newer OS builds or Windows issues a new OS, I know that not only my driver but my platform tools aka fastboot/adb/etc. (As of today, Revision 18.0.1) will always be compatible. The problem with these toolkits and driver downloads all over the place on these forums is that you have know idea how old the internals are. The other obvious thing to check is a bad or intermittently bad USB cable. Also make sure "MTP" is checked in Settings > Storage >Settings > USB computer connection.
Hey, I'm sorry if it's against etiquette digging up an old post, but this part worked for me:

Glad I could help. That setting isn't exactly the easiest thing to find.
Fix usb
Go to device manager in windows 7/8/8.1 . Connect your mobile with usb. You will see android device or adb right click on it, select properties, click uninstall driver. NOTE: When you click this a small popup will appear saying remove software driver, tick on it and click uninstall.. there you go ..it will reinstall drivers and your phone will be finally connected.
im having the same problem . My phone shows as Unknown Device on Device Manager. Tried other cables and usb ports. I can tell that the cables and ports are not the problem since my Nexus 7 can connect without problem. Tried usb debuggin on/off, MTP on/off, PTP. Still no luck. Already tried to reinstall drivers but still the same problem. Hoping this is not a hardware issue. I already tried factory reset and flashing other ROMs
