I'm a new Android user and loving all of the options out there in terms of Kernels, ROMS, etc, but I find myself being overwhelmed with all of the options out there. So far I'm pretty set with running franco Kernel (running r20 right now), but I find myself always wanting to try out new ROMs, and I'm hoping that doing all of this switching around isn't going to mess up my device but I just can't nail myself down to a ROM that I'm set with.
I had been running CM 10.1 nightlies, but just recently a couple of days ago I jumped over to MiNCO because of the support for franco Kernel.
Now I find myself looking at the Xylon ROM but am worried that jumping around from ROM to ROM is going to mess with my device.
What ROMs are you guys using, and why are you using them? I find myself that the most important factors for me are battery life/performance, quick toggles, and the power menu.
I havean EVO 4G LTE .. ever since i got the o.g. EVO I was hooked on them. But I use a stock with goodies Rom by flex. Its a great rom has everything I need and its super smooth

I generally stick to CyanogenMod. I keep an eye on the changelog and flash new nightlies when things I want are merged.
I've messed with AOKP and MIUI in the past but they're not really for me.
Cyanogenmod 10.1 Jellybro because it has everything I need and is clean code (no dirty hacks). Used to be a fan of aokp but too many dirty code and unicorns for me.

cm is my favourite rom, but thats not really the truth what you say. in order to stuff in tons of devices that normally do not run aosp they have to stretch the base wide open with hacks. this is the hackiest rom in the android scene and it must be, otherwise people out there wouldnt know what android is. thats why cm traditionally never had so much traction on this plattform than on others, simply because uncompromised aosp is leaner and more optimized for android itself and the nexus plattform. on a legacy device i'd always suggest cm, thats obvious. on nexus cm may not be the obvious best choice anymore, because the others are likely faster, more stable, have less daily fallouts, and in some cases have more features, like aokp, if youre the kind of guy that likes that sort of thing. if i flash cm here, its because i like their creative/inventive spirit and would like to support the project overall. flashing is easy though, trying out a couple of em isn't that much of a problem. (-:
Paranoid android. Not even considered any other ROM since I flashed this one. Its just so amazing. I couldn't live without all the colours that change per app, and all the other features it has.
I suggest trying it out now.

With my previous device, s2, I changed a lot, from RR to AOKP to CM etc etc, I like them all.
On my N4, I'm using stock until a really good-good ROM comes out, I don't have any problems, other than battery, so I don't panic, YET.

Yeah other than battery issues everything else is a "nice to have" and nothing I "absolutely need"

For me its PA rom....Ive tried every rom because I love flashing lol....but this is an honest opinion from experience....I know best rom talk is not allowed but the best to me is PA rom because of one simple reason....other than stock...its perfect!!!! And with that being said I have No issues with it very stable..super fast...alot of features man I can go on and on....if you want your N4 running perfect go PA...there are some other good roms because we have alot of elite devs in here and im sure more are on the way...but to me theres nothing better than super wiping your phone just to make sure its really clean and flashing PA...all you can say is wow after that lol......and now I change roms everytime Moles and his crew update PA....and also flash Franco kernel with this and your N4 will be excellent....
I'm currently on liquidsmooth. I've tried rasbeanjelly, Xylon, codefirex, CM 10.1, MinCo and a few others I can't remember. All were great. I'm really like liquidsmooth. It's a great balance. I flash, sometimes 3 times a day.

CFX is the first non-stock ROM that I decided to try because it uses the Linaro chain and I was pretty curious about the speed.
Long story short, CFX's performance is apparent as soon as you start using the device, it had much needed improvements.
Oh, and did I mention the CFX settings? Synegye's special built in mods allow you to improve your experience even more. For instance I decided to use the 6 signal Wi-Fi/Network, center clock, smaller Nav Bar, as well as dual view. This package, when combined with Faux's kernel presents you with an unbeatable experience on the best Android experience to date.

For reliability and just the right amount of mods for me it's been CM on any device I've owned 90% of the time. It's the least buggy for me, although of course, there will be the occasional bug along the way. Works beautifully on the the Nexus, although some mods may take longer to merge as other devices have to be taken into account.
Can't think of any "hacks" needed for CM to run on any Nexus, although much hackage needed for it to run on Samsung branded phones, and any other manufacturer that doesn't ship with AOSP and may be slow to release source. The kernel for the GN was less than impressive, but the N4 kernel is great.
Running stock rooted. Going CM 10.1 as soon as I get back home from vacation.

I am flashing between a number of Roms daily. Change between cm 10.1, aokp, paranoid, slimbean, codefire. Currently on paranoid b9. I love the options we have on the nexus. It would be a lot less hassle for me if I don't have to restore my texts everytime. Still I pretty much flash a different ROM daily

+1 for stock with Franco.
No stable (official stable) roms out there yet that I like, and since n4 is my primary phone, I need my stability :/.
Probably will switch over to AOKP milestone or CM stable.
On past devices I've run with CyanogenMod (any variation), but on the Nexus line I tend to prefer staying with a stock ROM and a custom kernel (though I'm stock presently) for the sake of cleanliness. CyanogenMod is great, it's built by trusted developers, and all around well known for their great reputation. On the flip side, I tend to stay stock because I need to help other people out often enough that I start to forget which features were added by the CM team and which come with Android itself.
I have been a Samsung user since the Captivate. I understand the use for Cyanogen on those devices to rid them of all things Samsung. But this device is already vanilla. As I was not a Cyanogen user and am not now on the NOte 2 because I need what the Note offers natively and I like the Samsung apps and native driver support for things like the FM Radio and S Pen apps.
That said I bought the Tab 2 7 that did not have the Samsung apps that needed those drivers so I flashed Cynogen and liked it ecept for the BT issue on 4.2. (Which I realize is not a Cyanogen issue).
That all said I have a Nexus on the way and wonder what are the benefits of Cyanogen on an already Vanilla OS? What am I missing here. Google apps is the necessary "bloat"
Not sure what ROM I will rin but I know I will root and flash as usual but outside of rooting and flashing CWM the clear benefits escape me.

Because nothing is perfect, including google's AOSP. I'm a big fan of the built-in OTG USB storage via the android vold. A lot of people are getting boners over the chronus widget. It has a nice filebrowser that isnt all bloated up like so many other ones. And the power-widget-pulldown thing is coming together nicely.

So Nexus 7 does nOt have native support for OTG USB? I thought the Nexus Media Importer was a native OTG application? I normally use Nova and Root Explorer regardless of the ROM. I guess I am just trying to wrap my head around the custom ROM thing on a Vanilla, non Samsung device.
Been wondering the same thing. Had the Captivate and now the Infuse. Rooted my Nexus 7 today. No it sure the reason for other Roms like my Samsung phones. Been working on reading up on that.

Cause CM isn't vanilla. It's a custom ROM with a lot of features.
Cyanogen mod is a custom ROM, modified with may improvements and tweaks. It has always been a custom ROM, from the early G1 days up until now. It brings with it numerous speed and functionality tweaks, not to mention themes and many other customisation features that are not available in stock android.

Thanks for a more detailed explanation. . Been flashing Samsung TW ROMS since the Captivate, Always enjoyed the extras without losing the Samsung Apps I liked (or needed for the phone hardware function).
I Never was a flashaholic so I stayed away from Works in Progress and "nightly flashing" , I would find a Developer I like and stick with it.
I did not try Cyanogen until the TAB as it had no hardware feature dependent on Samsung drivers I could not live without. . I liked it. AOKP seems to be a more customizable Cyanogen based or type ROM. Now with the Nexus coming I can compare the TAB side by side and decide to keep one and sell the other, The custom ROMs will have a large say in which one I keep. I never run Touch Wiz or Trechbet and likely will stay with Nova regardless of which Tablet or ROM I decide on.
I did not get the 3G version of the Nexus though so the TAB has an edge in that regard. The screen is washed out though compared to my Note and THAT is disappointing. Want to see it next to the Nexus.

Stock, because all the ROMs I've tried have been buggy and don't offer a great deal of additional functionality. I do have high hopes for PA though, once thier multi-window is finished. I have rooted the tablet though, mainly for the aosp browser.
I haven't had any real bugs with CM and PA, but AOKP has some weird theming bugs with settings not taking.
I use Pacman, which has CM, PA, and AOKP... All in one package.
KTManta kernel is hands-down my favorite kernel, as well.
PA was put on my Nexus straight away since I detest the phablet look, but now they're adding other things such as halo which is great. Plus PA makes mes want a Nexus 4 to get the most out of it on my phone too.

PA is nice and a great ROM, but if you need performance, sadly, it sucks. I haven't tried the latest build with halo, but on 3.15 the performance is really bad on games.
I use PA for the Hybrid engine. It is truly brilliant. I get very few errors in terms of performance and the tablet crashes occasionally but it's worth it--especially for Halo alone. Hopefully they will start to develop the Halo functionality in regards to tablets having multi-window rather than stacked Halo processes.

Not a ton of customization, lightweight, fast and optimized. And can use the same combination across all my devices (N4, N7, and N10).
I never used PA, but have heard quite a few reports of it being somewhat on the worse-side for performance.
Carbon ROM, felt the smoothest for me and had all the customizations I needed. A second for me would be Sentinel ROM. I guess it depends on what your main preference is. If its AOSP (stock), PA, cyanogen, or AOKP. They all offer something different. The best way is try a ROM and see if you are comfortable with the usage of that ROM. Also Kernel can also help play a role in your ROM choice.
I use the last RasSaber build, dont know where it is available anymore though. It gives me enough of the customization that I want, a nice built in theme, and very smooth performance with great battery life. For kernel I use the KTManta kernel because it offers the best battery life through undervolting and also gives me the best performance. Lots of fun options with it if your into that sort of thing.

I like EOS ROM + Trinity kernel for outstanding performance and just the right amount of features I need.
But rasbeanjelly, RasSaber, Sabermod, and Sentinel are all top notch in my book.

And by PA you guys are reffering to Paranandroid right?
So would you recommend sticking to rooted stock rom? Is that stablet enough for Battery/Gaming/OverallPerformance
You can if you want to, but you can get more performance on custom stuff. Or less performance but a LOT more features if you choose ParanoidAndroid.

Someone should do a performance check on PAC ROM. If it has all these features from different ROMs, including P.A. then it *should* also have similar performance right? Would be pretty weird if another dev who ported Paranoid Android features got it working way better when mixed with even more things on top.

on my first TouchWiz device and was hoping to hear some opinions and get educated on how custom ROMs work on a phone with an OEM overlay. I previously ran a Nexus S with Cyanogenmod on it. I really enjoyed it, but didn't lose any features going from vanilla Android to CM.
curious what features I might lose if I were to switch on this new phone. The features I might be interested in not losing are the camera app (essentially the burst shooting mode and best picture mode) and the air gestures. There were many features I really enjoyed of CM, but I would like most some sort of compromise.
other ROM suggestions would be appreciated to hear too.

You basically either got to go AOSP or TW, all the TW roms will have those features that come with stock working. AOSP roms like CM, AOKP, PA, etc won't have any of the unique TW features like air gestures and etc. In regards to the camera, it won't be the same exact app, but I'm pretty sure AOSP has a few equivalent shooting modes but I don't remember which ones, haven't used the AOSP camera in awhile.
And I'm pretty sure I've read that it won't be possible to merge those TW features, like smart scroll and all that air stuff, into CM and etc. MAYBE if the Google GS4 comes with them we will be able to port them in, but I doubt that'll the Google S4 will.

So S Beam and S Health won't be ported to AOSP style ROMs either? I'm just trying to figure out which way to go. I like the idea of some of these features, but realistically probably wouldn't use them much. Have you experimented with any ROMs on your S4 yet? Thanks for your response.

I'm quite sure that the APK's of those apps are dependent on Touchwiz so they won't work if your on an AOSP rom. That might not be the case for all of them.
Yes sir! I have tried all the main TW roms out, Force Rom is a really slimmed down stock rom with some nice mods, FreeGS4 is a choose and pick everything you want from stock with everything being included and most of it being uninstallable by default, with a bunch of great mods, Blue Kuban is a blue themed out TW rom with a great built in mod downloader/updater. All three are great with different niches. There is also Highway (or something like that) and Untitled rom but those are in their early stages still.
And the AOSP roms are the usuals, CM, AOKP, AOSPA and also SlimBean. If your going to try an AOSP rom I recommend the official CM nightlies or Slimbean as the others are still in beta.

I've been thinking I would wait for a CM milestone before giving it a shot. Might try Free GS4, that sounds up my ally. Thanks again for the answers. One last question if you have time: Have you considered dual booting?
I have been running ForceRom and have had great success with it. Battery life is great and phone has been running quite smoothly. Link below if you wanna check it out.

Hi guys, I am currently on AOSPA 3.60 ROM and think its a great ROM love the per app control I have and it seems to run very very smooth, I notice little to no bugs.
However I like the all in one style idea that would give me an extra level of customisation by being able to use AOKP and CM tweaks.
But is there any disadvantage of basically having 3 ROM's in one? does this cause issues with overlapping settings? are there more bugs? do things run slower?
Basically tossing up whether I want to stick with PA which is rock solid for me or go to an all in one ROM for those extra settings and tweaks?

I have never had great luck with the roms that combine too many features because they seem to start to lag after just a couple days and some of the settings menus don't work exactly right. You should definitely check it out to formulate your own opinion though.

I've found the best stability in roms that pick a flavor and stick with it, while most do incorporate *some* features from popular roms, the unstable ones tend to be the ones that try to incorporate everything but the kitchen sink.
For example, SlimBean is based off AOSP (android open source project), but does incorporate some things like the kernel from cyanogenmod on certain devices.
the more crap, the more bugs(and chances for bugs).

Might be irrelevant or just plain unlucky for me, but with PAC, Revolt, Xylon, etc I've had worse battery than say AOKP or Dirty Unicorns. So maybe battery what with all the extra things having to run and going on would be affected
