Is there really a point?

I'm going to pick up a nexus 7 soon but i'd just like to ask a question.
Is there really a point loading custom roms and kernels?
I know OC is not necassary but it i cool but seriously, whats the point of custom roms and kernels over all when you have a device that is going to get all the updates straight from google for a very long time in which we will not need to port to this device and also this game can run any game with spectacular performance and no lagg. And thanks to project butter as well.
So is there really a reason? Can you please tell me why?
And by the way do you need root to install free apks?

I've had Android devices for two years and always flashed custom ROMs and kernels. Once I got an N7 I was so impressed with the speed I thought the same thing. After a few days I flashed _motley's kernel and it made it even faster, I was still using the stock ROM though. A few hours ago, I flashed glazed jelly donut which is fast as all hell.
By all means, ROMs and kernels aren't necessary, yet you have a Nexus device so why the hell not?

Yeah your right.
But what i'm just confused on is which rom or kernel is the best

I'm sticking with the stock ROM but I have it heavily modded.

Your mis informed if you think the Nexus 7 doesn't lag in games at stock.Play a game like spiderman with a fps program running on your nexus .. it's a joke at stock speeds. Even the update for PuddleTHD causes major stutter on some new maps added. The list could go on and on .. Asphalt 7 is another game that at stock speeds is a joke...
Custom roms takes off bloatware and adds features and enhances that bring out the true potential of the tablet.
I'm loving the new features of the CM10 Jelly Bean ROM + Motley Kernel . The added landscape mode is especially useful at the home screen... The pro's of adding a custom rom to your table is endless.

There's really no reason to flash a new ROM. Flash a new kernel and over clock it.

Depends on the user really. I could list a 100 reasons why I choose a newer rom over stock.
But instead I'll list my top 4 I noticed right off the bat going to CM10;
1.)increased stability
2.)No bloatware
3).reponsiveness..touch screen especially
4.) increased boot times

Increased boot times would mean that it takes longer to boot?

Well, a second advantage of a custom ROM is to add new features, e.g. navigation/notification bar customizations, theming, lock screen options, that aren't present in the stock ROM. It really beats me why the google team hasn't been rushing to kang all the CM, for example, features (Apple et al would be even more left in the dust), but I guess that's bureaucracy for you.

Perhaps it's a complexity thing? Google are keeping the Nexus deliberately simple; let manufacturers build their own themes and skins, let the community do the same. But a lot of people getting the Nexus 7 on Christmas Day won't want to know about what modifications could be done to their N7, right..?

Let me play devils advocate. How many who report improved performance, whether it's the touch screen, graphics or other, have validate that perception with hard evidence?
Don't get me wrong, and please try and avoid the flaming. I've nothing against flashing new ROM's or kernals as I've done it with my Fire. I'm just curious.

The only real performance improvement is overclocking. Anything else is just placebo in my book.

What you call bloat and what I call bloat may be different.
G+, Talk, Magazines, Korean Keyboard--All bloat to me. I won't use any of those.
If I ever needed them, I could always re-d/l from the play store. I don't need it built in.
Movies, debatable for me. After watching the free movie, I'll probably never use it again.

I'm thinking of doing the same as you. Only thing holding me back is that most ROMs I've tried are buggy, at least a tiny bit. I'm on stock ROM with trinity kernel, doing just fine. Don't play many games, so performance bumps aren't necessary for me.
Does removing G+ and such really do all that much? I don't use them, so I figured they'd just be dormant somewhere. Do they slow the system down that much?

Those games are not optimized for Tegra 3 (except of course Puddle) and there are numerous posts about them.

[Q] What is the best Nexus 7 ROM?

Hi there! I have used Paranoid Android, AOKP Jellybean Glazed and the standard ROM and havent found anything perfect. I was wondering if someone could point me! I need a ROM that's stable for music as AOKP isnt Apollo crashes and that also has good features such as a great keyboard as I use it for college and Generally stable! Thanks for the help!

They are VERY stable and have great battery life. They also have a sweet Tablet mode and some pretty good tweaks (and Theme support). They probably don't have AS many tweaks as some of the other roms, but it has the important ones. It is a good balance between customization and stability. The Tablet Mode is why I started using it and haven't looked back. I've flashed several other roms and most of them use the Phone/Phablet UI with no options to switch to tablet mode on demand.
It's what I use and I recommend it.

The best rom is the one that works best for you. In other words, its entirely subjective and only you can answer the question for yourself.

I like Team EOS as well. Used PA for a couple days and ultimately just prefer the simplicity and ease-of-use of Team EOS. Use it on my Xoom tablet too, and even installed it on my GF's Xoom

[Q] What ROM are you using and why, and how often do you change?

I'm a new Android user and loving all of the options out there in terms of Kernels, ROMS, etc, but I find myself being overwhelmed with all of the options out there. So far I'm pretty set with running franco Kernel (running r20 right now), but I find myself always wanting to try out new ROMs, and I'm hoping that doing all of this switching around isn't going to mess up my device but I just can't nail myself down to a ROM that I'm set with.
I had been running CM 10.1 nightlies, but just recently a couple of days ago I jumped over to MiNCO because of the support for franco Kernel.
Now I find myself looking at the Xylon ROM but am worried that jumping around from ROM to ROM is going to mess with my device.
What ROMs are you guys using, and why are you using them? I find myself that the most important factors for me are battery life/performance, quick toggles, and the power menu.

I havean EVO 4G LTE .. ever since i got the o.g. EVO I was hooked on them. But I use a stock with goodies Rom by flex. Its a great rom has everything I need and its super smooth

I generally stick to CyanogenMod. I keep an eye on the changelog and flash new nightlies when things I want are merged.
I've messed with AOKP and MIUI in the past but they're not really for me.

Cyanogenmod 10.1 Jellybro because it has everything I need and is clean code (no dirty hacks). Used to be a fan of aokp but too many dirty code and unicorns for me.

cm is my favourite rom, but thats not really the truth what you say. in order to stuff in tons of devices that normally do not run aosp they have to stretch the base wide open with hacks. this is the hackiest rom in the android scene and it must be, otherwise people out there wouldnt know what android is. thats why cm traditionally never had so much traction on this plattform than on others, simply because uncompromised aosp is leaner and more optimized for android itself and the nexus plattform. on a legacy device i'd always suggest cm, thats obvious. on nexus cm may not be the obvious best choice anymore, because the others are likely faster, more stable, have less daily fallouts, and in some cases have more features, like aokp, if youre the kind of guy that likes that sort of thing. if i flash cm here, its because i like their creative/inventive spirit and would like to support the project overall. flashing is easy though, trying out a couple of em isn't that much of a problem. (-:

Paranoid android. Not even considered any other ROM since I flashed this one. Its just so amazing. I couldn't live without all the colours that change per app, and all the other features it has.

With my previous device, s2, I changed a lot, from RR to AOKP to CM etc etc, I like them all.
On my N4, I'm using stock until a really good-good ROM comes out, I don't have any problems, other than battery, so I don't panic, YET.

Yeah other than battery issues everything else is a "nice to have" and nothing I "absolutely need"

For me its PA rom....Ive tried every rom because I love flashing lol....but this is an honest opinion from experience....I know best rom talk is not allowed but the best to me is PA rom because of one simple reason....other than stock...its perfect!!!! And with that being said I have No issues with it very stable..super fast...alot of features man I can go on and on....if you want your N4 running perfect go PA...there are some other good roms because we have alot of elite devs in here and im sure more are on the way...but to me theres nothing better than super wiping your phone just to make sure its really clean and flashing PA...all you can say is wow after that lol......and now I change roms everytime Moles and his crew update PA....and also flash Franco kernel with this and your N4 will be excellent....

I'm currently on liquidsmooth. I've tried rasbeanjelly, Xylon, codefirex, CM 10.1, MinCo and a few others I can't remember. All were great. I'm really like liquidsmooth. It's a great balance. I flash, sometimes 3 times a day.

CFX is the first non-stock ROM that I decided to try because it uses the Linaro chain and I was pretty curious about the speed.
Long story short, CFX's performance is apparent as soon as you start using the device, it had much needed improvements.
Oh, and did I mention the CFX settings? Synegye's special built in mods allow you to improve your experience even more. For instance I decided to use the 6 signal Wi-Fi/Network, center clock, smaller Nav Bar, as well as dual view. This package, when combined with Faux's kernel presents you with an unbeatable experience on the best Android experience to date.​

That sounds pretty intriguing, I think I just found the next ROM that is going to get flashed on my N4.

For reliability and just the right amount of mods for me it's been CM on any device I've owned 90% of the time. It's the least buggy for me, although of course, there will be the occasional bug along the way. Works beautifully on the the Nexus, although some mods may take longer to merge as other devices have to be taken into account.
Can't think of any "hacks" needed for CM to run on any Nexus, although much hackage needed for it to run on Samsung branded phones, and any other manufacturer that doesn't ship with AOSP and may be slow to release source. The kernel for the GN was less than impressive, but the N4 kernel is great.

Running stock rooted. Going CM 10.1 as soon as I get back home from vacation.

I am flashing between a number of Roms daily. Change between cm 10.1, aokp, paranoid, slimbean, codefire. Currently on paranoid b9. I love the options we have on the nexus. It would be a lot less hassle for me if I don't have to restore my texts everytime. Still I pretty much flash a different ROM daily

+1 for stock with Franco.
No stable (official stable) roms out there yet that I like, and since n4 is my primary phone, I need my stability :/.
Probably will switch over to AOKP milestone or CM stable.

On past devices I've run with CyanogenMod (any variation), but on the Nexus line I tend to prefer staying with a stock ROM and a custom kernel (though I'm stock presently) for the sake of cleanliness. CyanogenMod is great, it's built by trusted developers, and all around well known for their great reputation. On the flip side, I tend to stay stock because I need to help other people out often enough that I start to forget which features were added by the CM team and which come with Android itself.

It really depends what you're looking for in a ROM. There are a lot of different ROMs that are currently available depending on what you want. Whether it's a stock feel (AOSP ROMs), customizability (AOKP, PA), CM10 of course, and more. I highly doubt anyone has tried all of the ROMs that are out there so go into the dev sections and do some reading and see what you like! :good:

The best custom ROM for me is CM 10.1's nightly builds. The best custom Kernel for me is franco.Kernel. Both together = awesome (for me)

I've been running a CM10.1 nightly with no custom kernel, its been pretty solid. I might have to check out Franco's kernel though, I'd like to try out undervolting for better battery life and heat at some point.

I've always understood this, but never really knew where to look. Is there some place that has a list of all the kernels and ROM projects and what their goals are. User reviews would be pretty handy as well.

As others have stated, this is very subjective. For example, I'd recommend AOKP. Not because it's the best per se, but because it's the one I'm using and I'm quite happy with it.

But you will have to read up a little on each one for specific features, bugs, and user reviews. Many ROMs with lots of features sound great but in practice aren't the most stable. Most bugs get ironed out in time by our great dev's, but its something to consider. When in doubt, flash & check it out!
For the record I use schnip's AOSP ROM w/ Tablet UI + Franco.kernel = clean, fast ROM with tablet interface. Can't ask for much more.

I honestly couldn't tell you since I don't own an OTG cable but you can flash franco's kernel and test it. If it doesn't work just reflash the ROM (without wiping) and you'll revert to the original kernel without losing any of your apps and data.

Seems to be by far the best kernel for dealing with the throttling issue that exists with our device so far...

At this point, I've gotta give it to AOKP. Lots of customizability and very smooth and quick. Rotating 180 degrees has no noticeable lag for me.

Paranoid Android is one of my all time favs in order to maximize your tablet space by altering app DPIs etc (not that you need to with a tablet this large). MMuzzy's ROM is a nice AOSP replacement which is what I'm on currently. As far as kernels go, it's really up to personal preference. I'm on KTManta (ktoonservative) and it flies though sometimes I get the lockscreen (black) of death - not waking up from lockscreen. I bought Franco's app ages ago before I got a tablet and can vouch that he also builds a strong/stable kernel.

Hey guys,
I just recently got my Nexus 10 and after making sure everything is fine with it I want to go ahead and root it.
Since I'm using a HTC Sensation as my phone I know how much a good ROM can improve the user experience and I'm looking for a nice ROM with good battery life.
Normally it's pretty easy to find a thread with a poll, or suggestions etc. but I'm out of luck when it comes to the N10 - haven't found anything yet.
Which ROM would you recommend as a good starting point to try out?

Rather than a poll or suggestions, it'll be better if you try it out different ROMs on your own since most ROMs here are fairly stable. Just remember to read their features and stuff..

Personally I recommend starting with CM. They have the easiest to use custom interface and pretty much everything just works fantastic. PA has gobs of customization but it is far from the smoothest experience on the N10. I personally just don't like AOKP.

Try a few to see what you like. Personally, I'd go with the latest AOKP PUB build. TONS of customization options, extremely stable, and the PUB extras make it smoother and faster.

I have run most of the ROMs and I prefer TeamEOS followed by AOKP. They both have built in custom optional tweaks.

This ! if you like the customizations that AOKP offers try Mr.Robinsons AOKP PUB (Project Unicorn Butter).
I have to say i was a little bit disappointment with CM 10.1 on the manta, using it on my I9100 since almost 1.5 years.
In My Opinion AOKP PUB works better on our Device

I'm using that one too, and it's great. And if you pair it with KTManta kernel you get a pretty customizable set up.

I don't know why, but Mr Robinson's was a bit of a nightmare for me. I tried twice (clean install) but each time one of my favorite apps, FX Explorer, would lock up when trying to set up/access remote locations and then the N10 would just reboot. It happened repeatedly whether I used TiBU to restore data or installed fresh from the Store. This doesn't happen with the AOKP (mr1, build 6) I'm on now. The final straw, though, was rebooting from recovery (didn't do anything, went in and changed my mind) and couldn't get past the lock screen.
Anyone have an idea what the hell was going on?

I didn't do Aroma, just flashed the ROM, so didn't touch the kernal. It's the one from the (official?) JB-mr1-build 6 ROM. Was that a mistake?

No, I asked because I had instability problems with that kernel, until I found out they were caused by improper gpu voltages.
But wiith the stock kernel and Mr.Robinson's rom my Nexus was rock solid, so I can't help you there.

I prefer AOKP ROM, because he faster that stock, he has many settings and very customize. Also he has good performance at games and benchmarks.

I decided to try the AOKP Pub by mrRobinson and I'm very satisfied so far
Might try Paranoid next, or I'll just stick with this one for a while - we'll see. You just have so many options to play around with on an Android device... it's beautiful.
