[Q] I may have finally diagnosed my emergency calls only problem but... - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

But I need help.
Copied from my thread on a jamaican tech site:
"So I'm trying to figure out if Digicel has screwed me over yet again. MCC and MNC are beyond me thats why I'm hoping some techie here can help me. I recently figured out that the reason my Droid Razr M (XT907/Verizon version) was going into emergency calls only mode was because it was failing to register on our 2G network. If I do a manual search I pick up three networks, Digicel 3G (338 - 05) Digicel 3G (338 - 180) and Digicel 2G (338 - 180). I'm pretty sure MCC & MNC, which can be found in your apn settings, are pulled directly from the sim card seeing as when I went from At&t sim to LIME sim in my previous phone they changed. My MCC & MNC are 338 & 05 respectively, as such (or at least I think this is why) I can only register on Digicel 3G (338 - 05). I'm sure that the sim you have doesn't matter all you have to do is pay for their data plan to get 3G, however when I bought my sim back in January they asked me if it was a '4G' capable phone to which I told them yes and they gave me this sim card.
My questions to you guys are:
1) Do you think they did this deliberately forcing us to pay for data plan before we can get service?* Which is what I had to do
2) Is there any way to get onto their 2G network? The constant search for a 3G network drains too much battery and limits my coverage around the island
3) If the only way is to change my sim card can I still keep my number?*
4) If I was to change my sim how would I ensure I get one that has MNC 180? Because I'm sure I can't ask the cashier that as they know next to nothing about tech only enough to make a sale"
*Please ignore this questions as they relate to Digicel Jamaica subscribers only and the ongoing delay of number portability coming to Jamaica

handbook?

Hi Folks
Does anyone have a soft copy of the handbook for the Universal they could post or mail me? Love to have a read.
Also, for the 3G calling, does it use a sim or usim?

3G traffic (be it data or video) always require a USIM. If you don't have any, you cannot get onto the 3G network. I'm actually having this issue, as I travel to the UK a lot, where T-mobile has a live 3G network. As I do not have a USIM (since T-Mobile NL doesn't offer 3G yet), I cannot roam onto their 3G network, only onto GPRS...
Bugger...
My operator (Telenor in Norway) enables the customers to use their OLD SIM cards and still have full 3G access!
My SIM card is from 2004, but customers may use cards that go back to July 2000 on the 3G network..
There has been some Over The Air updates, but these might be for something else..
The user only gets a SMS saying: "You SIM card has been updated, please reboot your phone."
So we can use the same SIM on a new and old phone, 3G or no 3G...

Not 100% what you're after, but hope that helps.

Well, I'm using a 4-year-old T-Mobile SIM in my JasJar, and I'm getting 3G access with absolutely no problems...
I didn't think there was such a thing as a USIM exactly? I got the impression that a "USIM" was just a normal 3v SIM card which has been enabled for use on the UMTS network. And that's done by pressing a button at T-Mobile 'Command Centre'...
'3' here in the UK make a big deal about USIM cards, and how you have to have one to use a 3G phone, but that only seems to apply to their handsets, because they put about 800 billion security locks on each of them. In my experience, Vodafone and T-Mobile don't require you to upgrade the actual SIM card at all, and I assume that Orange and O2 are the same.

Hmmm, you learn something new every day... It could be that one can indeed update the SIM to a USIM with a OTA update, I just hadn't heard about that before. I might put in a phonecall to T-Mobile...
Thanks for the heads-up!
I'd better just point out that my last post was entirely guesswork on my part, based on the fact that my old T-Mobile SIM, and my sister's (3-year?)old Vodafone SIM both work perfectly in 3G devices.
In my case, I never even told T-Mobile that I'd bought a 3G phone, the SIM just worked on 3G from the second I put it in, so no OTA upgrade needed? (Of course, maybe they gave us UK customer's an upgrade one night without telling us?!)
My sister got an official Vodafone upgrade to a 3G phone, so they may have done an OTA thingy at the time, but the actual physical card is the same...

O2, Exec upgrades and 3G

I've just got an Exec as a free upgrade to my beloved XDA II so I phoned O2 to ask about their 3G service.
In short, if you get an Exec from O2 you should also be given a new 3G SIM for free. If you haven't, call them to say you haven't and they'll send one. No reconfiguring of the Exec is necessary (they say). I'm guessing this doesn't apply if you're a pre-pay client, but who knows?
G
(I suppose I'll have to change my name to 3Goldry soon...)
I don't think a new SIM is required for 3G access... I had a Vodafone Pay&Go SIM well before I got my V1640, and it works on UMTS.
Yes you do require a sim that is compatable, although it is possible your existing one will support the UTMS, if not simply call in to the O2 shop and they will give you the SIM for free, activate it and away you go....
Huge bills - stupidly expensive access charges, but a super quick connection - oh - and did I mention the battery life, UTMS kicks the cr*p out of your battery, I have seen mine decrease even when connected to the car charger - Mike
some theory
3g requires a thicker sim card. You eill not be able to use 3g band with a standard gsm sim. hence no video calling, etc.
its a fact, ie - its a standart.

3G is a thicker SIM? I've not noticed any difference with my T-Mobile SIMs..?
O2 have different SIMS for 3G and GSM. The 3G SIM has some extra information on it which means that a GSM SIM in a 3G phone will not allow 3G data.
I went into an O2 shop and they charged me £10 for a new 3G SIM which they then registered to my account and threw away the old one.
rgds
£10 for a new SIM? That's a joke! I might just go back to Vodafone then in that case...
I just had this with Orange.
I bought a SIM from a market stall for £5 thinking that it would be cheaper than going to Orange for it.
I put it in my Uni, got it all registered and everything was fine until I asked 450 why I wasn't getting a 3G icon.
I had to go to the Orange shop, pay another £5 for a SIM (USIM, 3G SIM) and then ... The fun started.
I put £20 on the USIM when I bought it, it was pre-activated. I took it home, phoned 450, got them to change the number from my old SIM to the new one. I asked if the £20 would be credited accross and he said "yes, within 24 hours".
I waited and it didn't appear. I phoned 450 and the nice gentleman in India told me there was sweet FA he could do to help, go see the Orange shop.
I went to the shop and they told me that ev erything had been done wrong, that they shouldn't even sell USIMs without a new 3G phone to go with it.
I got my £20 back though and am now fully 3G (when in coverage).
The USIM isn't any thicker than the 2G SIM, but it is a different color.
So you're saying that the orange SIM card was meant to be free? Or were you not meant to get it at all?
I think the virgin 'normal' free sims can be enabled to be 3g simply by sending a message to 80310 with the word “Video” but o2 use special seperate 3g sims. From what I understand there is extra capacity on the newer 3g sims but for current 3g services we don't need them hence why virgin's can be enabled.
I have o2 sim and am planning to be off on my travels so am in the process of setting up my universal (xda exec) to use a virgin sim in this as you can roam in Japan only on a 3g sim.
Let us bare in mind that these most extreme cases are pay as you go deals where its "not subsidised"....
If anyone puts some marketing sense into it it will be clearer to understand what all the comotion is about.
Eventually all charges for sims etc on paygo will be waved.... for the moment its a matter of choice.

There's no such thing as a 3G SIM.
Yes there are different SIMs available (with more on-board memory) but at the end of the day they all have to fit into the same SIM shaped hole in your phone.
The handset and features on your account determine whether or not you can access 3G.
actually there is a specific SIM for 3G. It is same shape and size but does not work in older 2G phones..... However, 2G SIMs all work in most 3G Phones

Not entirelly right m8...give it a try if you have one and you will see I have my o2 rg sim and works fine on other 2g phones...that also goes for another PAYGO 3g vodafone card that i got hanging around...obviously when it comes to three uk its a diferent story since they do not offer a gsm service and rely on 02 lines where there is no coverage from them and this costs them money.

CDN Nexus S: Roaming indicator

I don't own an NS but I am hearing reports that some folks are getting a roaming indicator on when they use the 850/1900 Nexus S on Fido. Don't know if it matters whether the NS was bought from Fido or from another carrier. In this situation, it is necessary to (dangerous!) enable data roaming to get any data at all.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any bright devs got ideas on how to fix it?
Bump. Any ideas?
Sent from my Nook Color!
Bought from BestBuy today, (Fido version) and Roaming indicator is on.
I flashed CM7-RC4, MIUI 1.4.8...same issue. Then I decided to flash Radio from original I9020AUCKB2 to suggested version (I9020XXKB3)
Issue is still there + now my carrier shows-up as Rogers Wireless, not Fido
Will try different things and report back

For the specific case of CM7 + Fido, you might consider turning on the "National data roaming" option. It should shut off the roaming indicator for all carriers with the same country code as your SIM. Since all CDN networks you can access with a Fido SIM are covered without roaming charges (except Dryden, Ontario and Northwest Territories), this is a less risky option than keeping all data roaming on.
Of course you would not want to enable such an option on a Wind or Mobilicity SIM with the i9020T, because then you could rake in huge charges.
Using new Stable Release (CM-7) and using National Roaming takes care of this, The right carrier name shows-up (Fido) and the r icon is no longer present.
Thanks!
I noticed that a funny work around is to turn on airplane mode, then turn off airplane mode.
The roaming "R" symbol disappears and the correct carrier name appears. APN settings should appear automatically, but if they do not Fido's APN settings are the following.
APN: internet.fido.ca
USER: fido
PASS: fido
You will have to do the airplane mode on-off trick each time you restart the phone to get rid of the roaming R symbol.
I'm using Fido with a Nexus S for Koodo.
the people at fido technical is aware of the issue and is being bombarded with service tickets. the roaming issue only takes place because rogers essentially merged the hardware with fido without much thought so they're technically 2 separate entities still piggybacking each other when necessary. but if youre continually in roaming after a reboot i did find an easy bypass that you can do during a boot.
*#*#4636#*#*
phone information>scroll down
turn radio off then on again> scroll up
run ping test
within 3 seconds it should pick up your 3g properly, if it doesnt work you can toggle the network type

[Q] Only have T-Mobile Can't find ATT

----Seems like this is not the correct forum. will move it to unlock forum.
Need help on at&t network.
Recently i purchased one dual-core/dual-sim cellphone by one Chinese manufacture. It's claiming 4-band GSM, 850/900/1800/1900.
But when i insert att sim card, it always has 'Emergency calls only'. While with T-mobile sim card, it can be connect to T-mobile quickly.
As i know, TMB has 2G 1900 coverage, so as At&t. So i assume that this is not frequency issue. And i am pretty sure that this cellphone does have any 'lock' problem since all phone in China doesn't lock.
It took me a few days searching the solution but no luck. Network operators is grayed out when with att sim card.
This is what i'v tested:
-ATT, H2O prepaid card, no help.
-Changed the APN, no help
Then i go further, modified 'BP' firmware, like changing QCN (it's Qualcomm chipset) item 1877 according to this post, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521355&page=7.
But still no att.
So i am just looking for help from xda. for now, i can't tell what's the issue is.
I can provide more info if someone has some thought.

Weird. What is your zip code? You might need to search FCC frequency licenses to see what carrier frequencies are for your area.

Still Having Verizon / Page Plus Connectivity Problem

Sorry for dragging this issue out again, but I got my phone messed up again.
Situation is that I use PagePlus (Verizon MVNO) It was sorta working, but I was only getting 1X data on my A2017U running version B35. If I restarted the phone, I would get an LTE signal until the phone went back to standby. I got tired of that, and I took some time to try to get it reinitialized per the messages here and on the ZTE forum site.
The result now is the phone starts up, says Verizon Wireless for about 4 to 15 seconds, then it goes to No Service / Emergency Calls Only. LTE never appears on the screen.
To get to this condition, I backed up my files cleared cache and did a factory reset.
I put in a T-Mobile SIM. When I start with that, the top of the screen shows HOME and two bars. I restarted the phone a couple of times, then put the PagePlus SIM.
I can put the PagePlus SIM into my old Galaxy S4 and I get LTE service
With the PP SIM in place, under the SIM Settings, I have:
Network Mode: LTE/WCDMA/GSM
Data Roaming : On
Access point settings:
Name: Verizon Internet
APN: TRACFONE.VZWENTP
MMSC: http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 311
MNC: 480
APN type: default,dun,mms,supl
APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN enable/disable: APN enabled
Everything else Not Set or None
In the phone diagnostics, it does show my proper phone number. The IMEI displayed matches the sticker on the back.
Current Network: blank
Signal Strength: -1 dBm 99 ASU
Voice Service: Emergency Calls Only
Data Service: Disconnected
Voice Network Type: Unknown
Data Network Type: Unknown
Voice Call Status: Idle
Roaming: Not Roaming
Preferred Network Type: LTE/CDMA/UMTS auto (PRL)
Right now it shows me attached to a Verizon tower since the Cell Measurement Info shows MCC is 311 and MNC is 480. It has attached to GSM signals at other times.
I thought I followed all the right steps. Did I miss something?
Thanks,
Paul
I had the same issue. I had to have Verizon manually approve the device on their network. I still don't have VoLTE, but i have data (4G) and calls. Call them and explain what your trying to do. They should help you.
Thanks.
I tried calling, but their system kept wanting me to enter a phone number to get through. It hung up on my a couple times. I went to a Verizon corporate store today, but they couldn't (or wouldn't) help.
I tried calling Page Plus again just now. I got up to 2nd level support this time, and he went through the IMEIs for my phones. He was saying I had a different number assigned to my account that I couldn't identify. We ended with him suggesting a contact a local dealer.
After our call concluded, I was about to give up, so I started looking at the plans AT&T MVNOs offer. I went to Cricket, and it wanted the IMEI. by using #*06#
I forgot this thing has two. What I noticed is that the IMEI that appears when I go to *#*#4636#* phone information is IMEI2. IMEI1 is what PP has in their system for me. I can't put the CDMA SIM in slot 2
Another weird thing is after I went to #*06#, looking back through *#*#4736#* changes the IMEI correctly to IMEI1. I still don't get a signal. Now I'm getting No Signal with the T-Mobile SIM installed. I think I need to go mountain climbing to get this set.

Hey Paul,
ZTE does seem to have de-stabilized the radio for me as well on B35. Oddly enough though, the Verizon SIM I have in slot 1 seemed to work ok...it was the MintSIM in slot 2 that seemed to be an issue, as it was barred from LTE (and showed 'No Service' unless I manually switched to WCDMA/GSM in the network settings) when switching from SIM 1 to SIM 2 for data and also after reboots when it was the data SIM. EDGE service seemed to work, but only when data was on Verizon or if I disabled LTE on SIM 2 if MintSIM was the data SIM.
It seems that with two GSM SIMs there wasn't as much of a problem...so this does seem to be related to CDMA in slot 1.
I fixed it (I hope...fingers crossed...seems to work better at least for now) by restoring the modem partition from my B32 backup in TWRP but keeping all other partitions in place from the B35 update. So basically I'm on the B32 modem firmware with the B35 system and boot and stuff. Of course, I know that may not be an option for you if you're not rooted but if you do happen to have TWRP and a B32 backup it may be worth trying. Good luck...I definitely agree there's some issue with what ZTE did in B35...CDMA has been affected adversely it seems...and all the typical magic tricks (i.e., using a GSM SIM, booting with no SIM, etc.) didn't seem to bring about a lasting solution either, though I didn't spend too much time on it before I opted to just do a restore to B32...

I've been looking for some help with my phone. Ive had a perfectly working axon 7 on verizon (mvno total wireless) for like 2 years with full volte and all the rest. Works perfect. Now I had an issue ewith the display on that phone and got a replacement shipped out and now even after spending a solid week figuring out exacly how to copy my setup I cant get volte or any voice service at all. Here is what I did.
I'm on RR 6.0.0-20180511, hellsgate 3.18.109, ver 2.3 & baseband TH.2.0.c1.9-. This the old phone and the new one I copied everything over to it exactly as it is except a made a few minor changes. Those are: switching to f2fs data and cache partitions for speed, updating the bootstack to a new B10-B32 version i found and thats it. Modem, twrp version and everything else is the same. So the question is could the bootstack be the issue. Now I also noticed one very odd issue. My IMEI do not match the back of the phone after putting in the sim card but why? This is really odd, it seems that changes the IMEI but how? It still has 2 IMEI and they both start with a 990 number instead of the 861 for the first imei that they usually do. Is there something to that?
