CDN Nexus S: Roaming indicator - Nexus S General

I don't own an NS but I am hearing reports that some folks are getting a roaming indicator on when they use the 850/1900 Nexus S on Fido. Don't know if it matters whether the NS was bought from Fido or from another carrier. In this situation, it is necessary to (dangerous!) enable data roaming to get any data at all.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any bright devs got ideas on how to fix it?

Bump. Any ideas?
Sent from my Nook Color!

Bought from BestBuy today, (Fido version) and Roaming indicator is on.
I flashed CM7-RC4, MIUI 1.4.8...same issue. Then I decided to flash Radio from original I9020AUCKB2 to suggested version (I9020XXKB3)
Issue is still there + now my carrier shows-up as Rogers Wireless, not Fido
Will try different things and report back

For the specific case of CM7 + Fido, you might consider turning on the "National data roaming" option. It should shut off the roaming indicator for all carriers with the same country code as your SIM. Since all CDN networks you can access with a Fido SIM are covered without roaming charges (except Dryden, Ontario and Northwest Territories), this is a less risky option than keeping all data roaming on.
Of course you would not want to enable such an option on a Wind or Mobilicity SIM with the i9020T, because then you could rake in huge charges.

Using new Stable Release (CM-7) and using National Roaming takes care of this, The right carrier name shows-up (Fido) and the r icon is no longer present.
Thanks!

I noticed that a funny work around is to turn on airplane mode, then turn off airplane mode.
The roaming "R" symbol disappears and the correct carrier name appears. APN settings should appear automatically, but if they do not Fido's APN settings are the following.
APN: internet.fido.ca
USER: fido
PASS: fido
You will have to do the airplane mode on-off trick each time you restart the phone to get rid of the roaming R symbol.
I'm using Fido with a Nexus S for Koodo.

the people at fido technical is aware of the issue and is being bombarded with service tickets. the roaming issue only takes place because rogers essentially merged the hardware with fido without much thought so they're technically 2 separate entities still piggybacking each other when necessary. but if youre continually in roaming after a reboot i did find an easy bypass that you can do during a boot.
*#*#4636#*#*
phone information>scroll down
turn radio off then on again> scroll up
run ping test
within 3 seconds it should pick up your 3g properly, if it doesnt work you can toggle the network type

Roaming Symbol Problem

I just recently bought a Rogers HTC Magic, rooted the phone, and unlocked it. Everything seems to work completely fine. At the moment however, I seem to be having an issue with a Bell Mobility sim card. Bell's HSPA sim works fine, and I seem to be able to use voice and data ok, but the problem lies in that their seems to be a roaming symbol ("R") on my reception bar. Im using the phone in my local calling area which is somewhat misleading to me.
Im using MyHero 2.0.5 ROM at the moment. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks in advance!
Agreed
I'm doing the same thing. I'm running cyanogens roms and I get the same thing. Best I can tell is that this is normal on the magic. Just be careful if you live near the border like I do.
I figured this was normal too. I guess i'll try other SIM cards to see what they say as well, thanks!
Ya I also have this phone running on Bell, wish I could get rid of the roaming. It also asks if I want to connect once in a while too.
Shouldn't the romaing be dictated by the sim? I have a bell sim, on the bell network, why do I get the roaming icon? is there a way to change the phone so it doesn't think it's a rogers and not roaming or something?
Are you sure you have the Bell APN Settings and not the Rogers Settings in the phone?
Settings -> Wireless Control -> Mobile Network Settings -> Access Point Names
If it says Rogers you're Roaming on the Rogers Network.
I put in the bell APN. I don't think we can even roam on rogers network, wouldn't work. Either way, it's the Bell APN.
I don't have a clue as to the differences between Bell and Rogers sims... but I can tell you that my HTC Magic, on Rogers, with a Rogers sim (duh), running Amon_RA's most excellent RAv1.6.2H only shows roaming when actually roaming.
I was in the US yesterday and watched it flip from a Rogers tower to ATT. I was watching to make sure it was not using any data when roaming on a US network. The symbol, lockscreen info and the carrier listed in the status pulldown all were updated correctly.
It might have something to do with the ROM you are running. However I bet that given the phone came from Rogers, it has some carrier info buried somewhere that it is comparing to the carrier you are on (Bell) and triggering the roaming status.
If you disable data when roaming in the settings menu, what does it do? If it disables data, then the phone thinks it is roaming, which would support my carrier data mixup theory.
I will try a different rom on the phone. Unless someone knows for sure what I can do to fix this.
If you disable roaming there is no data, because once in a while it prompts to connect, if you say no, you get nothing. Sometimes my wife must accidentally hit no (its her phone, she probably says no cause shes not sure what it does). I just want to make it so she does not get the prompt ever (settings are all set).
I have a rogers HTC Magic (unlocked) I'm using a fido sim, it thinks its roaming as-well but I have only fido apn settings. It only roams with certain roms and radio's. I can use alot of roms eg. cyanogen,Hero HOFO 308,GYD 2.1.1 without roaming but when I update radio and flash cursorsense roms it thinks it is roaming. I have to enable data roaming in order to get a 3G signal. as a fido user I dial *#123# to see if I'm in my local zone zone. A fido tech rep told me that most unlocked phones indicate roaming because of the phones hardware programing. The hard programing of the phones checks the sim and sees that it is using a diff sim card and starts indicating roaming when in fact you are not. A rogers salesman also told me the same thing. He said as long as your carrier is displayed on your phone homescreen then you are good.
I have the AT&T Tilt, not running the AT&T ROM. I've tested a few different SIM cards on my phone and here's what I've found:
Rogers: Roaming works correctly. In Canada, no roaming indicator, in the USA, roaming is indicated correctly.
Telus & Bell (HSPA): Roaming indicator always on.
I've heard that this may be due to the SIM card listing more than one Mobile Network Code: 302361, 302653, 302657 (original Telus CDMA networks, not compatible with the phone or any kind of SIM-based network so it's uncertain why it would be on the SIM card), PLUS the HSPA network code 302880. It's possible that the phone is not reading that far into the list on the SIM and therefore does not know that 302880 is a home network.
Tilt 2 Roaming Triangle and telus
I'm on Telus and have a Tilt2. The original ROM that came with the unit didn't show the roaming triangle. I have attached some screen captures of the ROM. I've attached a copy of the registry (Remove the .cab it was the only way I could get it to upload).
I'm now running Jackos rom and it does show the roaming triangle.
Hopefully somebody can find where the settings are located and hopefully it's contained in the registry.
Have the same problem on the Stocks ROGERS 1.5 Rom. Sales associate said you should not get roaming charges since you aren't actually roaming and if you do, just contact your phone provider.
rogers htc dream unlocked now on roaming?
i also have a htc dream from rogers unlocked not rooted and my bell sims card works like my phone calls and my text but i can't get my data to work and when i click on the apns theres not thing and i am not able to adjust anything in there, if anyone can help it would be great, so pretty much the bell sims card works but i cant use my data and it says im roaming

If you aren't outside of Canada and you get the roaming symbol; they can not charge you roaming fees.
Roger and Telus PLMN Compared
I'm not sure if this will help,
I have attached a picture of the PLMN from a Rogers sim and a Telus sim
Maybe someone knows how to adjust the information on these lists.

The phone companies in Canada must be less uptight about unlocked/rooted phones
If you asked those questions to a t-mobile or at&t rep, they would straight up refuse to talk to you
American cell phone companies are still stuck in the "Ma Bell" mentality, where everything that touches their network must be under their control
anyone figure out a fix? I'm having these roaming issues as well on the bell network with unlocked at&t phone.
I have Same probleme Here, Bell on a AT&T Tilt 2 phone, Always get Roaming message.
any registry edit or mod available to make it work without these message ?

I searched around to a fairly moderate extent and I have found many people with the same problem, yet I can't find any resolution to this issue.
I'm not even sure where the issue lays. Is it with the hardware/firmware? SIM card? Windows Mobile? Is it the rilphone.dll? or maybe some registry entry. Maybe it's on the Bell network side?
Someone told me they put a Rogers SIM into their Fuze and it didn't show up as roaming, yet when they put a Bell SIM in, it's back to roaming. So what's the difference between Bell and Rogers?
Here's a question for anyone who has this problem, when you boot android does it still show as roaming?

Mobile network state: disconnected

Got an x10 today off ebay, unlocked after browsing this forum, by htc-code, network shows carrier on home screen, signal shows 4 bars, yet in status it says mobile network state: disconnected, this results in me not being able to get any calls at all, not even a simple balance check, the sim card is pay&go whilst I sort it out but as far as I'm concerned it isn't a data plan issue or anything like that.
Just wondered whether this is an issue anyone knows anything about or whether it's been imei blocked or whether I should just get in touch with tesco.
possibly important info:
Tesco mobile
phone was locked to orange, now unlocked
firmware 1.6
baseband 1.1.25
kernel 2.6.29-rel semc-android semc #2
signal strength -85dbm 14asu
mobile network type utms
service state in service
mobile network state disconnected
Being a pay as you go, the SIM might need activating? Ring your Telco and see what they say.
The sim came out of another phone I've been using for the past 3 years I'll give them a call later to set up a data plan anyway.
Got hold of Tesco, they couldn't solve it, imei isn't blocked or anything, tried and Orange simcard (the network it was originally on) and that works and makes calls, my other sim doesn't make or recieve calls, so it looks like it hasn't been unlocked fully. I need to get hold of htc-code and try to figure out a solution, that is, when they're online. I'll post back with an outcome.
both my x10a and my nexus1 say the same thing, mobile network state disconnected, and my phones work great. i am on wifi now, but when i turn off wifi my phone has no issues with cellular data.
your phone must not be unlocked yet or you might not have entered your apn correctly. make sure the apn is correct for your network and try again
i just turned off wifi and waited for the 3g symbol to reappear and now my mobile network state reads connected. so this indicates if you are attached to the network for data only.
i would still make sure that you manually configure your networks apn settings and then try to make a call. i think i had an issue when i had flashed to a different firmware and had not entered my carriers info.
Thanks for the reply mate, I'll try that seeing as ferraripassion/sudarshan is offline I'll let you know how it goes.
Sort of fixed, manually entering APN puts up 3g symbol and changes mobile network state to connected, even on wap internet, but I still can't make or receive calls on this sim card :/
Thought I'd check the phone on checkmend this morning, although the phone does still work on an orange sim card, checkmend says
Ever blocked UK: This item has been blocked during its lifetime by one or more UK network(s).
IMEI Currently blocked: This item is currently blocked on one or more networks. It may still work on some networks.

So, with that, does anyone have any advice on IMEI unblocking/people to contact and getting my cash back?
Write to matey boy on eBay and get money back. Because clearly, he's sold a non-working phone that's probably been nicked.

[Q] Focus + network type changing

Currently experiencing "hiccup" in internet/data experience with my focus. If phone is not in 3G+ mode, i get no data.
Can someone confirm my theory;
Situation:
Purchased Samsung Focus from rogers, thus rogers network profile (preset network setting for data usage such as MMS or internet).
Unlocked and stuck in bell SIM. can send/recieve calls, and txts, use data (internet, marketplace, weather updates, etc) if phone is in 3G+ mode (seen by tapping near top of screen). Can not use MMS
Presumable:
1)Focus was initially programmed to work on Rogers network.
2)Focus/Rogers, have a GPRS & EDGE capability
Theory:
Focus is programmed to use 3G radio for data (which is more widely accessible, & consumes less power), until detects 3G+/HSPA network and switch to that HSPA radio.
Since bell does not have a GPRS or EGDE network, when phone tries to receive data through 3G radio, it get nothing because no GPRS or EGDE network.
Is this possible, can phones change network they're using?
Theorized Solution:?????
Since Bell has 3G+ network, and they offer LG quantum. Could LG quantum be initially programmed to only use 3G+/HSPA, therefore anytime data is requested it activates the 3G+ radio.
If this is true of the LG quantum, could this be programmed into the Focus as well.
Thus i ask the community is this possible and how to implement solution?????
Sidenote:
I know the easiest solution would be to change to Rogers, however, Canadian provider fees are ridiculous (i'd be incurring early cancellation fee + a new restrictive costly plan from rogers) and there are others which don't have a choice but to use bell, and should have the freedom to choose a device of there choice with a little work.
I'm hitting a similar issue on Fido. The cell side works, and data only works if I enable data roaming. I downloaded the Network Profile app, but it won't let me get anything as it tells me "The application can't be launched with your mobile operator."

I think in your case it's just a matter of adding a APN.
Follow the instruction in the follow thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843517
a search for "FIDO APN" on google, and i found this;
FIDO
Name: fido internet
APN: internet.fido.ca
Username: fido
Password: fido
APN Type: default
Leave All other Settings Blank
MMS
Name: fido mms
APN: mms.fido.ca
MMSC: http://mms.fido.ca
MMS Proxy: 205.151.011.013
APN Type: mms
Leave All other Settings Blank
That should get your data working, and you wont be incurring roaming charges.
Other then that, let me know if your having a similar issue to above, i don't think you should as FIDO is a pure GSM network from day one so it'll have GPRS/EDGE/HSPA
MMS
Interesting the various issues people are having with connecting to different networks...doesn't seem to be a one-size-fits-all issue/solution.
In my case, I got a new Rogers sim card (unlocked AT&T branded Focus from Expansys), put it in, updated my APN info, and I have voice and data.
BUT, I have no texting/messaging ability! I know others have listed the MMS settings for Rogers, but the Focus seems to only allow adding *one* APN setting. No clue where the MMS settings can be applied.
Other friends who have Rogers sims were able to put it in their Focus and had no problems at all with texting, internet, etc.
Anyone have thoughts on this issue, please respond.

The instructions appear to be for the LG device, not the Samsung Focus. The code doesn't get me into any factory menu. The diagnostics screen just sits when I type in the code. I downloaded the Network Profile app but it errors out saying "The application can't be launched with your mobile operator".
Facepalm
OMG, I'm an idiot!
So apparently Rogers requires 1+area code for sending texts? Telus didn't...*sigh*...
So yes, I have texting ability (haven't tried MMS though).
Samsung's response:

Now that this issue got publicity lets see how long they keep up this attitude?
UPDATE:
COuld it be MS to the rescue?

Source:

Not much to add other than I'm in the same situation as reaver_shadow. Bought from Rogers, unlocked it and put in Bell SIM card. Everything works except MMS and data if not on 3G+ (will work when '3G' is displayed, but I guess it's borderline). Tried playing with option *#2263# in Samsung Diagnosis (##634# + Dial), but does not fix the issue. Hoping the Network Profile will become available for changing. Using the Network Profile app from Samsung does not work. Says it does not work with my provider. Says active profile is 'Rogers'.
Update:
Probably just lucky, but I have had a steady connection since this morning. I set option 2-7 under Diagnosis option *#2263# (use all WCDMA Band). What maybe did the trick is enabling Roaming, as mentioned by @colinbo. My apn is set to pda.bell.ca.
Update:
Nope, just luck. :-(
Have you tried this:

That's how I got data working on SaskTel. Since we're using similiar technologies, it may work for you as well.
That's great!! I'll give it a try. Never thought about pressing the 'back' button. I should know next week if this solves it.

[Q] Nexus 4 data radio problem?

I'm a smartphone noob [though slightly above-average with technology in general] - the Nexus 4 is my first smartphone, and I've been lurking here for a week looking for all possible solutions for my problem and none have worked, so please bear with the longish post:
Nexus 4 16GB, bought from the US Play store - using it since Monday, Dec 10. I'm using it with a Straight Talk AT&T SIM, and I have *no cellular data* whatsoever. I have been using the phone for a week now, and I haven't been able to use the internet except on wifi. No 3G/EDGE/HSPA+ logos next to the signal bars - in fact the signal bars always grey when wifi is off. I have only seen the signal bars turn blue when the wifi is on, never on a cellular network.
APN settings have been verified, and tens (yes, TENS) of Straight Talk reps have said my account seems to be provisioned correctly and good to go. I have tried all the alternative APN settings suggested for Straight Talk on various forums, including the two-APN configuration for MMS and data, deleting the data proxy from the APN settings, reverting to the default APN settings on the SIM and even using the Straight Talk T-Mobile APN [though I know for sure mine is an AT&T SIM because T-Mo doesn't cover my workplace, where I have good signal strength].
My old device was an AT&T locked dumbphone, so I couldn't change the APN settings on it to use the data on StraightTalk, but when I put my Straight Talk SIM in, it shows the 3G logo next to the signal bars suggesting that my StraightTalk account is probably provisioned correctly for data.
Hard reset, repeated reboots and repeated toggling of data and airplane modes have all been tried, and nothing has changed the situation. I have perfect voice and text messaging connectivity and zero data.
As a smartphone noob - is there a separate radio in the phone for data connections, and is it possible that this radio alone is a lemon on my phone? I *do not* have access to another micro-SIM, unfortunately - CDMA is popular in my town and the only two of my friends who have phones with removable SIMs probably won't appreciate having their regular SIMs cut down to micro for me to test. Without being able to test it, I don't know if I should just RMA it either.
***UPDATE*** : FIXED
I got a T-Mobile SIM to test the phone, and data worked perfectly well on that, so I concluded it probably wasn't the phone. T-Mobile wasn't an option for me though, because they have crappy reception in most of my town.
Happened to travel to Boston, tried my StraightTalk SIM in a friend's phone there - data worked fine then. So now I didn't know if it was the phone or the SIM.
After three weeks of grief and fighting, I got StraightTalk to send me a replacement SIM, which fixed the issue immediately - I had full HSPA data connectivity within five minutes of dialing their number to have my SIM activated.
Turn on Mobile data?
Have you enabled the 3G/mobile data switch built into android? Settings > Wireless & data > More > Mobile Networks > data Enabled Tick that if its unchecked, Im still waiting for mine but my HTC explorer running a vanila flavour of ICS has a similar settings menu, its somewhere along those lines bud, post back with results. As i said might be in a different location due to the differing OS versions
Good luck mate, Blewk
EDIT: Nevermind ive just opened my eyes and noticed you've tried it xD
so try calling this number *#*#4636#*#* and going through each of those settings (apart from LTE of course) see if any of them give you a Data connection. constantly checking the data switch on the phone at all times though making sure its enabled If this offers no luck im out of ideas for you mate

I've attached screenshots with the current settings, which are the ones the CSRs recommended.
I have also tried
deleting the proxy+port
changing both proxies to addressort format
changing the APN type to "default, supl, mms".
editing the SIM's default APN values to these, instead of creating a new APN.
and various combinations of these. None of these have helped. (I reboot and wait 30-45 minutes after every change in these settings).
EDIT: addressort is address(colon)port. Forgot to disable smilies.
Try changing your MMS Proxy to 66.209.11.33 see if that helps. Its the only difference I can see.

Thank you, I've tried that too. Since my other phone (without the correct APN) still shows the 3G logo next to the signal bars and the Nexus 4 doesn't show any data speed indications, is it safe to assume the issue is with the device and not the network?

I think I have the same problem as the OP. In my case, the HSPA radio connects about 50% of the time after a reboot. In my case, I'm convinced that the loss of signal is attributed to failure to communicate with the SIM card.
For the OP: Are your signal bars grey? or is it just an outline of a triangle on its side? If it's just an outline, the phone sees the SIM card, but cant retrieve the necessary data. To confirm, install a SIM info app from the Play store and see if the app see all details of the sim card.
I have already replaced the sim card, assuming I had a defective SIM, but the new card has not resolved the issue.
At this point, I think I need to RMA my phone.

It looks like the SIM details are being seen - I have voice and texting capabilities, and my signal bars are present but grey. Sorry to hear about your phone - my data connection is out 100% of the time though.
I've ordered a T-Mobile SIM to check this out - this way I should be able to figure out whether it's the network or the SIM.
Update: I've tried a T-Mo SIM and it works perfectly. So it's not the device.
However T-Mo isn't actually a viable option for me because they have very limited coverage where I live. Straight Talk keep telling me their provisioning is okay - any way to check on this? What other issues could I possible have that might be causing this?

Are you sure you have AT&T 3G coverage near you? I looked on AT&T's map for my work place and it shows 3G coverage but the entire county only gets 2G EDGE. And EDGE is horribly slow, I can't download anything. Went to Wal-Mart there and went to the wireless store and they confirmed that there is no 3G coverage in the area except for Verizon (which I had before this phone). I have an app called Network Signal Info, it will tell you what type of data network you are connecting too even when on wifi. It tells me EDGE2 at work HSPA at home.

Edit: just wanted to add that I read somewhere in a thread here that the colors blue and gray only signify if you are connected to google services or not. Blue you're connected, gray you're not.

Dead sure - as I said in my original post, I put my SIM back in my old (locked) dumbphone and it shows the 3G logo - though I can't use data on that phone because I'm locked out of the APN settings. And colleagues at work with have HSPA+ on AT&T. I can't try their SIMs though, because they don't use micro-SIM.
As for signal bar colours - even if there is no Google connectivity, it should at least show me a 3G or H/H+ next to the signal bars, which doesn't happen - and I cannot access anything on the internet anyway. I tried actually accessing the internet via the browser and various apps, I'm not deciding my connectivity based on the bar colours.
ALSO: When I use *#*#4636#*#* to turn the radio off and then on again, "GPRS service" goes to "connecting" but eventually stops at "disconnected". And the "network type" in that menu says "HSPA", so it looks like the network is kicking me off though I can't for the life of me say why that's happening.

I'm constantly get this issue where the signal bar becomes just an outline every minute or so and I lose connection. When this is happening sms becomes erratic (I receive texts multiple times sometimes 20-30 minutes after it was first sent, texts are received in the wrong order, cannot send texts until i restart phone).
Possibly hardware issue?
I had the same problem... could connect to the wireless network only if wireless data was disabled or WIFI was on.
Ordered a replacement which came today, and all is good Seems to be a hardware issue.

I to am having the same problem connecting to data networks. I have had the nexus 4 for about 2 weeks and its been an amazing phone until this morning when I had no data connection in town and around town. My iPhone 4 has 3G connection in the same area, with the same sim card. Ive already looked around the net and found the post to reset the radio but nothing happened. After not having radio or data for about 2 hours my phone finally fixed its self. I have no clue why I lost data connection or how it fixed its self. I will stay posted to see what happens but maybe there is some bad hardware in the device that is just now starting to surface.???
Hi I appear to have the same problem. My phone is able to make calls/text and etc with data off but when data is turned back on it screws around, doesnt connect to the internet, grey outline on service and etc. I'm thinking this is an hardware issue but how would I go and exchange this. One more thing, I bought this brand new from someone, does that matter?

If you want to RMA your phone, you can transfer the ownership by calling Google Play support. You will need the device IMEI and the email address of the original purchaser. Just tell them the phone was gifted to you. After the ownership is transferred, you can begin the RMA process.

Verizon: Global Roaming Problem (on return to USA)

I've been tracking and testing a bug where if you activate your N6 on Verizon, then switch the SIM to another carrier (say TMO) to test your phone will not re-connect to VZW when you put the original SIM in. This happens if you change the "Global" setting the LTE (Recommended). After you set that on TMO (or AT&T or...) the options menu only gives you 2G/3G/LTE where when activated on VZ gives you "LTE/3G/1x/Global". The only way to get the phone back on VZ is to factory reset.
Today - I just came back from a trip to Canada where in Global mode the phone roamed on one of their GSM based carriers. I didn't change the roaming mode out of Global (I know better) but when I was back in the US the phone wouldn't go back to VZW - instead went to "Emergency Calls Only" I checked the carrier settings and in the time I was in Canada (2 weeks), the Global option disappeared, leaving only 2G/3G/LTE...and no Verzion. It was done. Factory reset time.
Hope they've spotted this issue in their "intensive" testing process and that's why they are holding up the release. If not..be prepared if you roam globally on the N6 to have a dead radio when you come home and factory reset.--unless there is a service/app settings that can be easily wiped...

I had the same issue (my thread is in the Q&A subforum). Nothing short of a factory reset would fix. Hopefully Google gets on this and fixes it. I travel overseas for work frequently, and the whole point of getting the Nexus 6 was so I could use one phone here and there!
I'm on ATT using a GPS version phone, and I noticed in the "Preferred Network Type" my default setting was on "Global". But it only has choices of "LTE (recommended)", "3G", and "2G". So if I switch to LTE, I have no way of changing back to Global.
Subscribing to thread for a fix.
Can you not change the network type in the *#*#4636#*#* menu to "LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)"?
I just switched back and forth. Not sure I understand what is going on here.
Edit. Ahhh but you also switched carriers, interesting.
well thats a bit concerning... I'm leaving for taiwan in a couple days and was looking forward to just dropping in a sim over there.
So even with 5.0.1 you cant go back to VZW without a factory reset?
Okay I just got back from a trip to Taiwan. I switched to 2 different carrier Sim cards.
Upon returning to the states, I popped in my Verizon sim card and everything works fine.
Yeah, just do the *#*#4636#*#* and change the network that which you'd like to connect. So for Verizon, you would choose CDMA/LTE in the drop down menu. Once you do that, your network options in the regular settings will change.
Same thing happened to me on a recent trip to Spain. I made a backup before traveling and upon return I flashed the backup to get it to work again in the states.

Has anyone seen any updates on this? Is Google aware of this bug? I'm using my Moto X overseas since I don't want to factory reset my Nexus 6 when I get home. This was the whole point of getting a Nexus 6 in the first place: I could use the same phone here and home with a simple SIM swap!
Has anyone tried
fastboot oem config carrier vzw
to see if that will "jump start" the phone back to Verizon?

That did nothing for me. Tried it earlier this week
Those with the radio issues could try to flash only the radio.img using fastboot. This would let you restore the radio without having to wipe the entire device. Hopefully a fix will come when Verizon officially releases the Nexus 6.
My solution was to pop in an active T-Mobile sim, turn the phone on, and then back off, and then pop in the vzw sim.
That seemed to solve the problem.
Interesting. Wonder why a US GSM carrier would fix the problem, but a foreign GSM carrier causes it. Maybe I'll give that a try next trip (in 2 weeks).
I don't think its the matter of a foreign GSM carrier causing the problem.....
I think the problem is Verizon.
I don't hear of this issue with anyone else but Verizon customers.
I doubt it, since the inability to switch modes is present even before the Verizon SIM is inserted. I think it's a bug within Android itself.

I just tried this exact same thing after being in London and Budapest. My Verizon SIM in my Nexus 6 wouldn't register on their network. I put in the T-Mobile SIM and it did work and register with no problems. Switched back to Verizon's SIM and no luck. Still not able to register on the Verizon network.
To clarify, the verizon sim roamed onto canadian providers without problems. When I returned to a normal Verizon service area, the phone wouldn't register again (on verizon) until I popped in a t-mobile sim, and then switched back to the Verizon sim.

Yes, that's what I did. Went to London/Budapest with the Verizon SIM roaming. Landed back in the States, no more Verizon connection on the Verizon SIM. Popped in the T-Mobile SIM and it works perfectly.
Tried doing the switch back like you mentioned, but no luck at first. Had to try a few times. Back to life now.
Thanks very much.
