Now I am easy to please in terms of something "just working" enough to do what its intent is. But 2 things I've noticed about the default music app that I want to see if anyone else has noticed.
1) Whenever you are playing a song and have the window up, if you hit back to go to the playlist again, it will do the "window wipe transition" as if it is going back, but it stays on the same screen. It takes a second tap to actually go back. and
2) When you go to scroll through a playlist, if you don't move your finger instantly, I mean stall for even a second, you will have chosen a song, and are moving the order of that song in the playlist.
Has anyone else encountered this and/or know of a way of fixing it?

I don't think I've noticed these, but I'm pretty damn sure that google is conjuring up some kind of a new, reworked music app. They have been ignoring it in the past, and collecting user's feedback.
If I were to guesstimate, we'll have a new music app in 3.0 or so.

Man, I sure hope so. The N1 is definitely awesome, but all the other Androids get things written specific to them whereas we are "generic." Don't get me wrong, I love everything about this phone, I just hope having the Google Experience phone lives up to that, as it should be super awesome to begin with, not just barebones. Fingers crossed for 2.2.
Not many people really like (or use) the default music app, therefore hackers or app editors (and bug fixers, lol) have barely touched it. I rarely even hear it referred to theses days, and honestly I suggest downloading an alternative. I love music, and could not go on without it.. I had to download a better replacement quickly. Though, the Sense music app is still good, the app I use is still what I favor more. I've never even heard anyone make notice of any bugs it had.. (the default app)

What music app do you use? I tried TuneWiki at one point, but I had trouble with my BT headset, and found that to be the problem so I uninstalled it.

I hear btunes is really nice (just stating a random alternative) very iPhone like, but I use RockOn (called 3 in the market, but you have to search RockOn) its very simple and barely has many options.. I just like it for some reason. People seem to love it also.
I'd personally recommend museek - topographical album mapping by genre, gestures, smart shuffle mode that adjusts what songs get played based on what you skip and what you listen to, and resumes music playback when you plug your headphones back in

You can try MortPlayer music too
+! to OP about pressing back goes to the same screen twice sometimes... The thing that really annoys me is that there is no easy way to play music you want by folder, which is what I do on desktop computer.. E.g. I have a Kpop, rnb, rock, ost, electronic, folder

the first problem isnt a problem it will wipe bac to the same screen as many times as you pulled down the window and touched the song now playing panel...everythime u pull the window over is like layering the same screen...and the second one is only if you touch the "lines" at the left of the songs its givin u an option to reorganize your playlist...[as far as i know]
Search for 3 music player.
Hey, thanks guys for the helpful thoughts! I got btunes and I gotta say, its pretty nice. The one thing I actually "like" about Apple being the music management (I'll overlook how bloated iTunes has become). The mimicry of the player is nice and easy to use. Worth $1.50.
I used to have a SHARP phone (a Japanese brand) and the camera shutter sound was mandatory (no option to turn off). They explained it's because, well, it's Japan and people use phone camera to take pictures of you-know-what parts of girls secretly in public.
I assume because our new 407 ROM is a Korean carrier ROM (and Korea is similar to Japan in that regard) so the shutter sound is made mandatory too.
GF has this phone and she's been complaining about it. It has been very annoying to her lately. And naturally she blames me for flashing her these ROMs (she's not into dev'ing or flashing stuff, she's sort of a "simple" phone user). It's probably the only problem I have with this ROM. Sometimes she just wants to take a picture quietly in public, like taking a picture of the beautiful and tasty plate of food while in a restaurant etc but the shutter sound can't be turned off.
Anyone has any suggestions?
By the way, I tried installing some third party camera app but no luck, the sound can't be turned off whatsoever. Looks like the sound is not at the app level, but rather has been built deep in the system level.
From camera app, Configuration --> Shutter Sound is missing?
You can "disable" the shutter sound by simply deleting the audio file with an file explorer and root access. That's the way I did with all my roms before
It doesn't work with the autofocus sound though, or at least I haven't found the corresponding audio file. In my opinion the autofocus sound ("beep") is far more annoying

That's a tremendously great idea. Do you still remember what the name is for the audio file that corresponds to the shutter sound?
If you turn system sounds down to zero that should disable both the shutter and auto-focus sounds. You can use a tasker profile to do this whenever the camera app runs or use a volume control app that exposes the system volume like Volume Control + or Volume Control.
Edit: No root needed for this method.

No sorry, don't remember it as i don't have it anymore. But as far as I remember there are only ~20 audio files, so you can check them by hearing in a few minutes, if the file names aren't that clear

Changed all three to 0 still no good. Shutter sound is still there after reboot.
OK I see what's going on. GF repeatedly told me there's no such setting in camera app. I just double checked, there is.
In Camera settings, the rightmost setting, scroll it down to the bottom, there's a setting to let you turn off the shutter sound. So problem solved.
Sorry again for being a complete idiot.
oh yea i forgot to say the last part, setting those to 0 will make that option appear in the camera app now, that entry is removed when the line is set to 1
I see. Thanks. So it was indeed because of your solution. Thanks.

I'm a user of AutoHotKey on my PC, and I love the little quirky scripts I can write to get rid of daily annoyances or do repetitive tasks.
I'm assuming Tasker is somewhat similar for Android. I've heard a bit about it, but because of the price-tag, never really indulged.
Who around here uses the app, can't live without it, etc?
What types of things do you rely on it for?
Thanks!

I use it for a profile switcher and to toggle between 3g/WiFi when I enter/leave the home or office (each has an Airave).
When we had the Time Without Signal problem and toggling Airplane Mode was the quick fix, I set Tasker to toggle whenever I booted the phone or took it off the charger.
My kids have some geo-fencing text reminders set up for them as well for when they leave school.
Here's a quick link to some of the different tasks you can set up. Some quick Googling and you can pretty much find the script for whatever you need. I love it because one app can handle the job of 5-10 different apps, although sometimes the scripting can be frustrating.

Tasker
I use tasker for quite a few things. First and foremost is my pattern lock. I hate putting it in all the time at home, so I have tasker disable the pattern lock when I'm on my own wifi. I still keep the slide unlock active because I like the shortcuts on the lock screen.
I also use it for music. So when I plug in a 3.5mm plug without a mic it starts my music player and sets the volume. It also disables the lock screen which is insecure but when I'm driving or running I don't want to mess with a lock screen. When I'm casually listening to music, I have a headset which has a mic attached. Tasker can differentiate and therefore starts up my music app and sets the volume to a non-earsplitting level. For this I leave the lock screen active.
Lets see, when I start any app that uses GPS it automatically activates the GPS and polls my position. I have it automatically manage the screen brightness depending on the time of day. I also have it go to airplane mode if the battery is <5%. If I'm feeling lazy I have it manage when my wifi is on based on location. I have several locations (home, work, coffee shop) that I typically connect while I'm there and turn off wifi when I leave. I don't always use this because it's not 100% reliable.
That's about all I use it for. I can post instructions if anyone is interested.
I went ahead and purchased the app. Pretty cool so far. I'm interested in the profiles you are using, it sounds like you know what you are doing.
Thanks!

Microsoft just introduced a similar app that's free. On{x} I think it's called.
I used to have it set wifi based on network location, but that wasn't always reliable. I use it to set volume levels depending on time, so that way it turns the phone down for work, and then cranks it up after work. I generally always have it making noise on email and phone calls, because I don't always feel it vibrate.
One other neat one I use is to put it in vibrate mode whenever I place the device face down. That way when I'm in a meeting, I take out my phone and just put it face down on the conference table...instant mute. When I pick it up, the sound comes back on. Also handy for charging at night, I just put it face down for the night and everything gets silenced.
I also have a profile that activates based on time and location...so now I don't have to worry about the "loudest cellphone in the world" -- one that goes off in church!
Only limited by your imagination, I found a lot of good ideas on the tasker site.

Here's how I have some of my tasks setup. I made a profile that activates when wifi connected (state->net->wifi connected->fill in whatever you need) and then have two tasks associated with it that I called "keyguard off" and "keyguard on". Keyguard on is my exit task. For Keyguard off go to (display->keyguard->set off) repeat for keyguard on. If you want to have the slide unlock to stay on you have to use a plugin called secure settings. Otherwise it's a similar process you just navigate to "plugins" instead of "display". From there it takes you into secure settings app which is easy enough to figure out.
For the music stuff: I made a profile one for a 3.5mm with a mic and one without (new profile->state->hardware->headset plugged in). Then I made a task which is assigned to the one without a mic, set the keyguard off like above then go to app->load app->your music app of choice. Then set the volume audio->media volume->whatever volume you want. Add an exit task that reactivates the keyguard I just use my wifi task for this. Same process for the one with the mic except I have it go to a lower volume.
To use GPS you probably have to use that secure settings plugin again depending on the rom you are on (im on AOKP and have to use it). Make an new profile (application->choose all apps with gps that you want to trigger this). Make a task (plugin->secure settings->edit->gps->pick state) then add another (misc->get location). Make an exit task that disables gps.
Finally, for low battery make a profile (state->power->battery level->whatever level) and associated task (net->airplane mode->on) and an exit task which turns it off.
There's plenty more that tasker can do, hope this helps you figure it out a little. I mostly just bumbled around the app until I found some useful things plus their website is full of good ideas.
I hope everyone doesn't mind if I add another question to the thread.
I'm interested in using Tasker as well, but I'm concerned that the benefits of automation will cost me in battery life. How much has you battery life changed using tasker, if at all?

Well, you could use the Battery Monitor Widget from the play store (the one with all the graphs and stuff), and use it to see how much the app is using. I doubt it's a lot but I know that it is SOME. The more apps running (and updating/logging) in the background the more battery you are using. Also, someone correct me if I'm wrong but, your phone has to "wake" every time an app needs to do something (update/log)
It does use power but nothing extreme in my experience. If you're using it for setting basic sound profiles and the like it won't be noticable really. You should look at it the other way though, taskers power of automating stuff like knocking off wifi and data connections when you dont need them will probably save battery life.

For the record, you can download a fully functional week-long trial from the dev's website for free.
I do a fair amount with Tasker, but one thing that I haven't seen many other people do is enable/disable battery-draining apps in certain contexts.
For example, I have a power-saving profile that disables a set of apps and services that would otherwise run 24/7. I also use have a profile which lets me run and disable AirDroid in response to a Google Voice text, so I can manage my phone from my laptop without ever touching it.
On my Nook, even small wakelocks add up over time when the battery life would otherwise be measured in days, so I use Tasker to disable just about any app that likely to throw a wakelock while I'm not using the device. Because I'm forgetful I also have profiles to disable wifi when the device goes to sleep, and to email me when the battery is getting low so I remember to charge it.
Finally, I also have generic profiles to lock and reply with GPS coordinates in response to text, turn volume to max and make noise in response to text, unlock when connected to home wifi, and unlock when my alarm goes off so that I don't have to enter my passcode and scan the alarm-silencing QR code I put up in the bathroom.
Let me know if you want more info on any of the above!
Would you mind posting the low battery profile?
I'd like to set that up on my TP.
Thanks!
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Sure, it's not too complicated although it does take a bit of setting up. To start with, in order to enable/disable apps you must use either the SecureSettings plugin with an updated su binary, or use adb commands. I choose to use SecureSettings, since that way I don't have to look up package names.
To disable groups of packages, I first make several individual tasks disabling each one. Then, I make another task which turns off wifi, 4g, and GPS. Next, I make another task which runs appropriate package-disabling tasks for that grouping, as well as the wifi/4g/GPS off task. Finally, I put an icon to run that group task on my homescreen.
Obviously, you'll have to figure out what apps/services you may want to disable for yourself.
Note that you could just as easily put all the package disabling actions in one task, thereby obviating the need to nest tasks. I just did it this way since that's what seemed natural to me, given that I have a few different groupings.
Links to XML files for the wifi/GPS off task, an example package disabling task, and a low power consumption master task.

I had the same concerns when I purchased Tasker, and I've found the battery life impact to be undetectable by me. Mainly, that's because tasker runs based on states, and it doesn't constantly poll the OS for what state it's in.
For instance, I have a task that puts my device on silent when it's face down. From how I understand it works, tasker tells the OS "let me know when you are face down" and then pretty much goes to sleep. The OS handles that, and when it goes face down, it tells tasker "ok, i'm face down now" and then tasker executes its script.
So, tasker really doesn't impact battery life, but if you have it switch on high-drain stuff, then yep, you'll see a difference, but that's what you've set it to do, not the app itself.
HTH,
Michael
I've been very thankful for Tasker. I've used it for over a year now, and its one that I continually use and keep.
A few different ways I use is to set the sound profile depending day and time. It auto sets to vibrate at church and auto sets to sound off overnight. But if certain contacts call (mom, dad, wife, etc) the ringer turns on.
I also use it to turn on wifi when I'm home. Thankfully, I'm on Sprint with unlimited data. But I'm sure on other carriers, data usage may be a concern and using wifi at home could save that data usage.
Another cool way I use it is if I'm driving and recieve a text message, it will auto-reply with a text saying "Texting while driving is bad. I'm traveling at 47.3 mph currently. I'll reply later when it's safe". I know that's alittle overboard, but I think it's nifty.
So a while ago I discussed with my friend rohit joshi (developer of tegra overclock) about a system file called adj, and how it may be responsible for sometimes disturbing ram behaviour. It couldn't be adjusted AFAIK on 4.1, but it seems to allow modification on 4.3.
1: Mount system R/W
2: Open /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/and open the file named adj
3: Change it to the following: 0,10,25,50,80,150 and save the file
Now please observe ram management in intense situations such as using chrome or heavy games, so far I have noticed no irrational behavior like asphalt 8 committing suicide etc, but its early days and we need more data. Custom values are welcome but please mention what you used
Note: These values reset upon reboot

Before:429MB ram free
After:563MB ram free!
On stock without this mod i have 429mb free LOl
I think Supercharger solve those problems this way for two years now.
Hmm this isn't really it's purpose, also these values fluctuate on their own btw . It's supposed to stop foreground processes and other important stuff from getting killed in low memory situations, for example once my alarm stopped responding because I was busy extracting a zip file. This fix is for this kind of wierdness

Could you explain more what these values are...
is it oom_adj parameters
and why changing them so drastically?
Default values are 0,58,117,235,529,1000
Shouldn't we try first minfree parameters which are also IMHO odd...
15000,17532,20065,22598,25131,30263 which equals (Nx4/1024)
58.6 68.5 78.4 88.3 98.2 118.2 Megabytes
I change mine to 8192,16384,18432,24576,32768,65536 or 32,64,72,96,128,256 Mb
so far so good... will see over a longer period of time... :silly:

I changed them this way simply based on advice given, as I say different values are welcome I don't fully understand it myself however what I know is it seems to be working. I have been told that newer snapdragon devices have different adjacent values to other phones. This causes apps that SHOULD be closed to instead not be closed and so the system resorts to closing your fave game or whatever. Adjacent and minfrees have a relationship but I'm not sure exactly how it works, will try and find some better info on it

Lol, I just got the dreaded home crash! Will continue to experiment, it makes no sense how bad it is, I just ran this game on high graphics on a galaxy s2 and homescreen didn't even redraw when I was done!
I found some info on this driver here:

It might actually be worth trying higher values instead of lower ones from what I'm reading here

How is it going with adj settings?
According to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5442369&nocache=1&z=6948587024309106
adj values determines how apps will be killed in case of Out Of Memory situations
Numbers are, similar to minfree settings connected to
ForegroundAPP, VisibleAPP, SecondaryServer, HiddenAPP, ContentProvider, EmptyAPP and hence the numbers
0,58,117,235,529,1000
The higher number, more probably the process will bi killed.
You can say "if free memory goes below XXXX then kill some process with oom_adj greater then YYY; if free memory goes even more below than ZZZ then start to kill some processes with oom_adj greater than XYXY. and so on.."
Click to collapse
So, values 0,10,25,50,80,150 for adj
will give results but also kills too many processes, maybe some important ones.
Maybe someone that have expeirience with linux kernels can answer the question:
Who sets oom_adj parameter of a process?
IMHO, by setting these adj values, you tell system to treat all processes with oom_adj higher than 150 like EMPTY_APP
Will try changing adj settings but perhaps with some less agressive parameters... let's say half of the original
0,25,50,100,250,500
someone told that actually sony latest framework that eat ram.. not by apps/bloatware.. which mean even though we kill foreground app.. it will load more cpu after that.. will raise more probs such as lags n battery drain.. but simply for playing heavy games i think it works..
sony knows this issue... maybe they will fix it in the next update.. maybe
I've been playing around and conclude that this works somewhat but you must lower your minfrees too for maximum effect, not sure what the best combination of values is just yet, seems lower = better, but too low may cause lag as ram fills up. One more thing is I noticed sometimes adj changes it's values back, perhaps if it considers them invalid as it only happens with certain values I tried

Yes I know they are aware of the issue but if more people report a bug, greater is the chance that they release a patch.

/sys is not a real directory
It's a virtual file system so everything you change vanishes after reboot.
If you have some settings other than defaults you want to put into /sys you can do it via init.d scripts during the boot time.

Well, I said if you want your values get inserted automatically you need init.d script.
But since these values we talk about here are still unconfirmed and for testing I think it's better to stick with manual entering rather than automatic.
What I do is that I typed as SU in command prompt using Android Terminal app a command
echo "0,10,25,50,80,150“ > /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameter/adj
Same for minfree settings

I've successfully rooter my Nook Simple Touch and explored all of its files and databases that I can find. But I cannot locate the setting to change that will update the frequency at which the screen saver changes images.
My goal is to have a folder of image files that change every 30 seconds or so. Unfortunately, the stock screen saver's change timer is much longer than that.
As a workaround, I set the screen saver activation time to 500 hours and installed Perfect Viewer to run its slideshow function, but this is less than ideal. I'd rather just do it the right way.
Does anyone know where this setting is located?
Thanks!

That would seem to be a poor decision as far as battery life is concerned. Are you sure you really want to do that?

Battery life is not a concern in my application.

OK, so I have to admit I didn't even know this happened. It's been a long time since I used a folder of images for a screensaver. What I seem to recall from that time was the images changing each time the NST went to sleep, but not during sleep.
Let me take a look. I guess one possible approach would be to consult a logcat after an image change and see if there are clues there.
I've come up empty on a search through the various B&N app databases and settings files.
Just to see this actually happen, I changed my screensaver from a static book cover image to one of the packages of images I installed years back. That was nearly 24 hours ago and there is still no change, which is what my memory told me to expect. So without an automatic change, there is nothing to look at in the logcat.
Are you sure your images actually change by themselves during the standby/sleep process? I know they change when you wake up the device and then let it fall asleep again.
You've already tried the slideshow idea or I would suggest that, but did you know there is a built-in slideshow (probably associated with the demo mode)? I don't know what the parameters of that are or whether you could replace the images with your own without breaking it.
Maybe a better question to help me understand what you'd like to do is: will the NST be used for something other than the slideshow display (either running in the background or running on demand when the device is awakened)? If all you want is the slideshow then any number of apps (like the PerfectViewer you mention) would work. Maybe something simple if you just need the slideshow. But if you really are using the device for other things and just want the sleep screen to change periodically, that's either got to be supported in the settings in an accessible way (which I'm doubtful about) or it has to be a custom alteration of the OS.
