[Q] How can I root my defy+ without connecting to pc? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hei I have a Motorola defy+ and I had CyanogenMod 7(I think it's the gingerbread) and 3 days ago I tried to instal Cyanogenmod 10 (Jellybean) but i kept getting errors from Gapps and I couldn't find the right Gapps so I tried to instal CyanogenMod 9 ( Ice Cream Sandwich or something like that) and now I'm stucked at the red motorola symbol and the only thing I can do is to go in stock recovery because I don't know how but I deleted one of the recovery's (lol). I tried to seek for a way to repair my phone but in all the solutions I have found I had to go to settings and usb debuging and stuff like that , things I can't do because like I said i'm stucked at the red motorola symbol and i can't use the phone. I searched on google and someone said that I have to root the phone with programs such as SuperOneClick or Rsd Lite .Oooh and when I enter in bootloader it says "cannot program battery low" .Right now the phone is charging for like 2 hours. Sorry for my bad english xD

[Q] Bricked Defy and not recognized by my USB

Guys,
First of all, hello to all! So, I followed a tutorial to install Froyo on my Defy. Now I'm stuck with my phone trying to boot as soon as i put the battery on, but it never makes it past the "M". I can get into recovery. I wiped data, cache and tried to install the "update.zip" but it aborts saying "signature verification failed." I have the boot file (that was the next step) to install using RSDlite 4.9 but the phone is not even recognized any of my USB ports. Any ideas? Thanks to all in advanced.
press volumn up buton and power button on boot , once you saw the backlit is on , release the button , you will see the rsd litle showing your usb .
dont worry . i think it is your first time to use RSD only
yea i been through that ( doesnt work on vista )
you need to install rsd lite and 2.51 UK Firmware ( no usa )
google it and you will find it or on this forum
install usb driver from motorola webiste
install rsd lite
put uk firmware in ... C drive/ program files / motorola / rsd lite
install driver
If your phone is stuck on " M " then pull battery out
turn on and quicky press power + vol up ( i think ) before M even appear
wait till it say your boot loader and your battery
plug phone in
start rsd lite
on ... look up your uk firmware that you you recently put in rsd lite folder
then you should see your phone connected on the 1 slot
then hit start or something and wait it out .
Thanks guys! But I've been messing around with this thing for so long, I drained the battery. I had to run it up to the local phone store to get it charged. I'll pick it up in a couple of hours and give your advice a try.
Hey guys! it worked! I'm up and running. Now, anyone has a link to bypass this Welcome to Motoblur screen. Is there a Custom Froyo or Gingerbread Rom out there without Motoblur?
Alright... I'm up and running, but no camera!!! Heck, it was a learning experience. I guess I'll go back to 2.1 now. LOL
So the Chinese ROM was rooted. I installed Clockworkmod and restored from the backup i had made of the original 2.1 OS. I'm back to a rebooting phone not making it past the "M" I went back to RSDlite and realized the boot file said 2.2 only. Can anyone assist me finding the right one to go back to original. I haven't been able to find a thread about reverting back to original.
The more I read, the smarter I get seems like the only thing I'm missing here is the SBF file for my original T-Mobile OS. I'm looking at the motorola website, but I can't find it. Can anyone point me to it? Thanks all! Oh yeah, this is the first android phone i mess with so my apologies.
There is no us sbf file. You have to flash a uk version and restore 3g with the posted fix. You can find the links to available sbf files on this forum. They are not available thru moto's site.

Just to make sure I got it right. After using clockworkmod to restore to my factory backup, I need to use the UK sbf to be able to boot to it. Correct?
I found the sbf for Central Europe with no Motoblur. Does anyone know of any issues with it?
well the only way to fix this if you previously backed up your rom/files with recovery ( good thing i did this ). If not then you have to live with what you got.
I backed up my original firmware using clockworkmod. I flashed to the Chinese 2.2 but my camera didn't work. Since the camera is important to me, the Chinese Froyo was a deal breaker. I installed clockworkmod again and "recovered" from my original backup but now my defy won't boot. Did I miss a step?
Your data from the backup may cause issues when rolling backwards. Install an eclair sbf, then restore. That worked for me.
On another note there is a fix for the camera. Check the forums.

Bricked Defy and not recognized by my USB
I also bricked my phone when going back to stock from cm7. My phone is able to go into boot loader. But it is not recognized by my desktop PC/RSDlite. I tried in linux with SBF_Flash. I tried with my laptop also. no luck . anyone please help me!

Just try and install the Motorola Drivers in your desktop and open RSDLite and press 'show devices' button. It will surely show the details of your phone.
Then point RSDLite to the stock SBF and flash away.

If you hear the USB plugged in sound in your Pc, it's a messed up driver installation. If you don't hear the sound, it can be a bad cable, or a faulty microusb port (assuming that your pc usb works fine). Try once in a different pc and with a different microusb cable.

I do not hear any sound from desktop/laptop.
I think I stuck in boot loop. When I try to power on the phone, it just shows CM7 boot logo for few seconds then restarts again shows the boot logo... this happens continually. When I try to enter into recovery, it does not go to CWM recovery instead it goes to stock recovery. I am still able to enter into boot loader. In boot loader, it says battery OK connect USB to program. When I connect USB, it is recognized by phone and says transfer mode: USB. But my PC does not shows up the phone.
I tried re-installing drivers and RSDlite many times but no luck. But I have nandroid backup of CM7. Is there any possibilities to enter into CWM recovery?
Any help is appreciated.
Edit:
I tried even different USB cables and PCs also.

[Q] Recovery...where are you?

Hi everyone,
today I've solved my problem (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567301), but my recovery...is brake! When I boot into recovery, there is an exclamation point...I can wipe data/cache and use zip file from sd. Stop...nothing else!
Like this....I can flash with another rom? Or maybe my recovery is "damaged"?
Sorry for my poor english...

I think you're in stock recovery. What you need is install 2nd-init for the custom recovery and all it's features onboard...
Thanks for your reply!
I've tried to install 2nd-init (the stable, not the latest) and all it's ok...if I restarted my phone e try to enter to recovery mod, I see an Android BootMenu ( ) and I can choose stock recovery and custom recovery. If i start the custom it retunr this message:
Code:
Start Custom Recovery...
E:Can't run /system/bootmenu/script/recovery.sh (No such file or directory)
So confused....
Something braked with che CM9 kernel? If I start the stock recovery...I see the imaged attached in this post.
Boot normally into CM9. Open 2nd init and uninstall Bootmenu, then re-install bootmenu but chose "Latest - 1.0.7", not "Stable - 0.6.7"
Boot menu 1.0.7 is available with latest Sndinit2.0 version, get that sol from dev section and then install boot menu.
Sent from my MB526 using XDA App
Thanks to everyone!
Now I'n with the 1.0.7...I have the same image on the recovery this is strange!
I've tried to flash with che CM9, but the install aborted with this message:
Code:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
EDIT: the same error with my CM7.2
I'm coming from a 7.2 NIGHTLY (cm72-120127.0846-NIGHTLY-Defy+). I've tried to install the CM9 from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432100 (I've used the Quarx rom). After this my Defy+ wan unable to boot (black screen). After a few of stock rom I'm back to the default rom (the spanish version, not the italian...it doesn't work ). I would like to flash the CM9, but first I think there is a problem with the recovery...why it displayed the image with the alert? Another question...with the CM7 my recovery have got a lot of option...now I've: reboot/apply update from sd/wipe data/factory reset/wipe cache. Is it normal?
What the hell I've done?
Most likely you're trying to flash unsigned ZIPs and the recovery wants signed ones, or trying to flash what should be extracted as "backup" and restored. You can turn off signature checking in recovery, if you know that you're flashing correct ZIPs and they're unsigned.
The stock recovery ALWAYS displays an image with the alert, because you can NEVER change it, until Defy bootloader will be unlocked (if it'll ever happen). Nothing strange about it.
I was able to use recovery and I tried to reinstall the CM9, but now my phone looks dead! No boot, no boot error, no recovery...nothing! Black screen. If I plug the phone to my pc...RDS Lite does't recognized the Defy. I would try to flash the sbf and come back to the 7.2 NIGHTLY...but how?
Damn...I'm so sad for this I'm hope there is a workaround...

Did you press vol up and power??! You need to go to program mode for RSD lite to recognise your phone! It may have been that you flashed CM9 for Defy instead of CM9 for Defy+!! By no recovery do you mean you can't go even to stock recovery?!(Sounds almost impossible!)
Power and Vol+/Vol- doesn't work for me. Only the white led (charging status) works if I plug the usb cable to my pc. RDS

Normally these steps are followed to flash SBF:
1.) go to bootloader mode (Vol up + power button. That's the program mode I was talking about)
2.) Now RSD lite will recognise your phone.
3.) Flash from RSD lite.
Are you saying that Vol up + power button = nothing happening in your phone? Not even black screen with
Bootloader .... blah blah
USB
Battery OK
Ready to program
????
If that's the case:
1.) Battery not charged.
2.) Go claim warranty!
Yes...this case! I know the bootloader screen
Code:
Bootloader .... blah blah
USB
Battery OK
Ready to program
but this time nothing...
Mhh...maybe the battery is near the 0% and the usb from a pc doesn't charge the phone? The led is white...but nothing. Maybe with the AC power?

Charge your battery... In another Defy phone, NOT McGyver method as many have already fried their batteries, using this trick!
I don't have another Defy for try this! I will try tonight at home, with the other cable connected directly to AC, and not to my pc. I hope it's work
No matter what cable you will try. At the moment your phone is not charging the battery. In order to start charging, you need to reflash it. And in order to reflash it, you need to get your battery charged... Sweet, ha? Get a buddy with a Defy to charge your battery and then reflash the phone.
Wow...this is a problem for me. Nobody have this phone and in Italy is not so much widespread...nobody know it :-(

Then get to Amazon.com and buy a docking station with external battery charger if you dont want to use mc guyver, thats was my backupplan if I'm too stupid to use it... well mac guyver worked for me, 5 min charging and everything was fine xD
Here is an example

It's hard to use the McGyver method? I'm a little bit scared to do this...but if it works to you...i will try

It worked like charm, battery is fine, i was able to flash a new rom...
One Usb-Cable "broken" but well who cares.
But if you try it, you need to be very very veeery careful.
Friend of mine is Hifi-Electrician and i had a little help from him, for testing which wires are the right ones to connect.
You have to be aware, that this could kill your battery and you need to buy a new one.
But once, everything is connected the right way, you also need to know that there is no safety or fuse or whatever, that safes your battery, so dont put it on too long, in my case, it took about 5 to ten minutes for 50-70% of battery, so dont let it be connected too long.
And one last thing, make sure, that there is no possibility for the cables to hit any other connector(?) on the battery, use some kind of tape, to make them stay in there position.
If your still willing to try this, good luck to you, as I say, this works. I dont know which MC Guyver you like to try, but i would recommend the batterycharge only, so not connected to the phone, version.
But think about this docking station too, its way more comfortable, easier, less dangerous, and amazon is really fast in shipping, so it would probaply just take 1-2 days.
I fuound this in the forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892026
I think it's the best way...or not?
Thanks
EDIT: can I use the usb cable from a pc? Or I need to plug the cable directly into the AC power?

[Q] Uninstalled the default launcher and then did a factory reset. Help Me!

I rooted my motorola defy. Installed a Holo launcher. Uninstalled the default motorola launcher and did a factory reset. The result is that my phone is left without a launcher and no google account associated with the phone. When I boot my phone I can only see a clock on the the screen and an emergency call button. The emergency call dial pad is the only interactive part of the screen.
Phone: Motorola Defy (most probably) Red lense without Motoblur (I am not sure what Motoblur is, in which case I am guessing I dont have it)
ROM: Stock Froyo (official upgrade from eclair)
Recovery: Stock recovery
Location: India
Following are the methods I tried:
METHOD 1
Cant install launcher from the google play website on desktop because no account is associated with the phone.
METHOD 2
Use the motorola offical upgrade tool
I havent tried this since I had already upgraded to froyo using this same tool.
Question: Can I use this again to flash/repair my stock ROM.
METHOD 3
Tried to create update.zip for a Launcher using a tutorial on this site. Signed it using Auto-Sign (as explained in the tutorial). But when I try to install it using stock recovery, it still says signature verification failed.
METHOD 4
ADB
I setup ADB for the first time on my desktop. I had the drivers installed since my computer recognized the phone and the MotoHelper was running when I plugged in my phone. But the adb was unable to detect my device. Maybe because by default the USB debugging is unchecked.
Please help me:crying:

Method 2 should work but in case you are lost you should carefully read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982
Since your device is rooted, you should try to install some of the latest Quarx's ROMS CM 7 [GB] or CM 10 [JB], that should solve your problem.
The update tool does not detect my model, it only detects imei. pls suggest something else

Do you have an old nandroid backup? Try restoring it if you do.
OR
Upgrade to CM7.2 or CM10 or MS2Ginger even.

I'm on jelly bean, but, somehow, my device managed to show setting menu as i hit menu button. So i can go to internet setting, set and activated my apn. Then i go to apps menu. I go to all apps, then scrolling to google play, clicked on there, then showing me a bunch of summaries, and i scroll it down untill i found "activate" button.
Clicked that button, it opens me google play setup. So, i sets it right, brings me to google play home, searching for launcher (i use apex) download and install. After it finished downloading, i hit home button and, viola, i had my launcher.
If ur phone had default file manager isntalled, and u had ur launcher.apk, then it is lot easier, with the same method, but this time, instead activate g-play, activate ur file manager and installing ur launcher from there.
Note: still, i can't install launcher2.apk, the default launcher i've uninstalled. Anyone can help?

- Download and install RSD Lite
- Open RSD Lite
- Enter Bootloader Mode on you phone (Power+VolUp)
- Connect phone to you PC (USB)
- Open RSD - Lite
- Flash new SBF

thanks for the reply.
but, how do i know what sbf to use for flahsing?
i have this info from rsd
HW Model = TBP
HW Version = PCR
SW Version =1.540
sw model =4017
ftm version = 1.210
rf band id =gsm_band_1234, wcdma_band_15
and also a rsd log with many error.
Hi! I see in another post that your model is XT535. Here I leave a link where you have three links.
http://www.firmware-team.com/showthread.php?t=153
You should know that your version of android had originally Defy (2.3.6 or official ICS), surely if it was ICS version, will not be able to install a 2.3.6, but I can assure you (my model is the Defy MB525 and therefore I can not be of much help). Also take a look at this other link, that maybe you also helps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827338
ok, thank you very much.
i'l llook over the links !!
hey, thanks for the replies. i already solved the problem and yes, you're right, i managed it with the file TBP-1540-0-4017-A03_sec_moto_RFM from 1st link.
so, for further references, if your motorola defy xt535 starts but stops at the "touch the android to begin" screen, download this file TBP-1540-0-4017-A03_sec_moto_RFM, open rsd lite, open phone in bootmode ( volume up + power button pressed together), connect the phone to pc with usb cable, open the downloaded file in rsd and press start. this is how i managed to resolbe my problem and i hope it will help others.
thanks again for your replies.
if rsd gives an error saying "error sending ram download for bootloader" it means the file you are using doesn't match your phone and you have to look for the proper one: select phone while connected in rsd and in the left panel it should show the info about the phone, like this:
Technology: GSM850;GSM900;GSM1800;GSM1900;WCDMA850;WCDMA2100
Software Version: XT535_1_540_4017
Flex Version: TBP-4017-019-2
Bootloader Version: N/A
DRM Version: N/A
Bound Signature: Allowed
so, as you can see, the software for mine is 1_540_4017, as the file i was using.
those being said, i hope it will help others.
thanks you all for your help. - See more at: http://modmymobile.com/forums/637-m...cant-get-pass-android-screen.html#post4128151

[Q] Moto defy battery cant be recognized after flashing ROM

Hello everyone !
This is my first ever post in this forum ,though i have learned alot from this forum .
Few days back i successfully rooted my phone and after that flashed custom rom without having back up of factory Rom but during this process my mobile stuck .
RSD was unable to detect my phone neither i was able to completely charge my battery.
Last day i came across the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892026
and set up everything as it is shown there.
Successfully flashed ROM UK Retail 2.2.2 Service sbf (Build number: JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_177-003)
http://and-developers.com/sbf:defy
Phone was up but with warning message battery is invalid ,can't charged the battery.
I reflashed the ROm in hope that it will solve my problem but all was in vain .
When battery is fully drained ,i connect my mobile via usb .It boots up successfully but fails to recognize my battery showing a question mark on battery meter.
I can charge my battery via external USB .
Help me please !

Reflash with RSD the bigger sbf 3.43 which you find (177-009). after flashing do a factory reset.

Sorry for being late .
I have flashed every patch but still have the same problem.
Right now i have CM9 kernel 2.6.32.9 .One of the interesting thing i noted is that custom boot loader shows the right battery status but android battery says "unknown 100%" .At first i thought i had green lense but later via defylense app i came to know that i have red lens(it may be erroneous because i have already patched red lens batt fix files) .Few days back i tried dual boot Cm9 and Cm7 but none of them recognized my battery.
Please help me ......

I think that you has flashed a sbf with a not optimal BL (eg. you flashed a BL7 or so). For this kind of problem already exist a good topic.
link ?

Motorola Defy MB525 battery unknown
Same problem here. My Defy was working fine until I installed 0404 Quarx build. Then after a few hours installing and setting up my apps back I did a reboot and the got stuck in the Motorola logo until my battery drained off. USB won't recognize the device but I managed to use an universal charger to get the battery running again but again stuck at Motorola logo so I flashed a new rom using RSD. That got my device booting up again but the "Unknown battery" message started showing up whenever I tried to charge. I spent the whole weekend trying new sbf and battery fixes but none fixes the problem. I even got back the previous Quarx build I was using and still nothing. Is there something else I might have missed?
So I kept trying with different SBFs but none of them work and yesterday I changed back to Epsylon's last rom, which was the first I ever installed in my phone and now Android recognizes when the phone is connected or not, and it shows the "charging" icon but the battery full. In battery status still shows 100% and Unknown. Strangely enough when I go to the bootmenu it starts charging, but only if I keep touching the screen and moving around the menus.

[Q] Motorola defy black screen with white led

hi all i bought defy about a year ago as a second phone from ebay with cm7 installed.last week i purchase another phone and give my 7 years old daughter. however i reset everything and phone turn old version blur mod then stuck on m logo i download rom and sort the problem.
real problem starts now i try to install cm 9 download all required files wiped the phone and install the rom however it didn't restart stuck on black screen and only white led when connected with usb also didn't connect or recognized by rds lite.I found tread battery wake up from i think was ''mggrager'' or something else finally rds recognized the phone and install another sbf but still stays same as black screen and white.i read so many threats on this side or others and each i installed custom roms without clearing cache
battery replaced with replacement battery also original
all drivers installed
it doesn't respond any buttons or usb connection
rds only with battery jump
please help what to do
I'm having the same problem as you are, i believe... I had cm11 (or 10, not sure) installed for about a month now (back in december) .... Went on a trip, and when coming back my phone battery ran out at the airport... I take my phone home, not really giving it much importance, and i noticed it would never charge and/or turn on, and that when I connect it to the pc, nothing happened other than the white led coming on.. RSD won't recognized it...
So i found out i had to charge the battery manually, and used a Universal Charger... Still, no recognition by RSD Lite...
Finally, i found a way:
1. Open RSDLite
2. Connect phone (no battery on it)
3. While holding Power + Vol Up, put the battery in
4. RSD will recognize your phone!
Problem is, it recognizes my MB525 as "S Flash OMAP0360"
And when i try to flash a .sbf i used previously to recover my phone (had bricked it by trying to change ROMs in a sloppy manner), it seems to flash smoothly, but when it's going to reboot the phone, the progress goes up to 100% and then asks me to reboot it manually.. I read somewhere that to fix that i should take the battery out, disconnect the phone, put it back in, and make RSD recognize it like i mentioned before...... and after RSDLite says flashing is PASSED, the phone still won't turn on... I have tried at least three times and gotten the same result... Help?
I don't know if i should make a thread of my own.. i think we have the same problem, and i REALLY need my phone back.. so i guess we could just help each other fixing it somehow....
The SBF i am using (because it helped me save my phone before) is:
JORLA_U3_3.4.2_107-9_SIGNED_USAJORDMR1B25TIGCOLA01E.0R_JORLAFROTIGCOLA_P009_A002_M010_HWp3_WIG146037_Service1FF.sbf
EDIT: Also, i read somewhere that when all you get is the white led (when connecting to PC) it means that your battery is not charged enough for flashing.. ?
i already tried several times this method however no luck i am really not sure what to do any more i think only option try to find latest rom or first rom then try again if any luck will update and give the links
