Apologies for a very noobish question but I'm new to all things Samsung. I'm on fairly old firmware (MDC) from my operator and there have been a few updates (MEA is the latest). Due to rooting and messing with the system I have a custom status and so OTA updates are out (TriangleAway is not completely working for me). I've downloaded the updated firmware from SamMobile but have a few questions.
Do I just flash this with Odin as PDA, no wipe?
Will I lose root?
Will I lose my custom recovery?
I've made some modifications to /system, including SystemUI and removing a lot of the bloatware. Will I have to re-do all that after the update?
What about apps I've added to /system? Will these still be there or do they get wiped?
I assume all other data, settings, etc won't get wiped also? /sdcard and elsewhere are "safe"?
Thanks!

You will loose root, you will still have all installed apps from google play, settings and data will still be there too. But after you have lost root super SU app icon will still be there but unable to be accessed. Whenever I flash stock firmware via Odin I always do a factory reset after just to clean any mistakes errors.
Hoe this helps

Well, it turns out you lose all apps moved to /system/app and busybox (/system gets wiped whether you want it to or not), and I've lost a few settings (like Titanium Backup & Acrobat) too.

Rooted my G2 in December 2010 but did not install any custom ROMs on it. I have SuperUser and ClockWork Mod on it. The OTA 2.3.3 update finally made its way to my phone, but does not update because of root.
I have seen too many threads explaining how to update the phone, leaving me confused Can somebody please explain how to or point me to a relevant thread.
Thanks.
There are pre-rooted versions posted in Development. Just download from there, put on your SD card, and flash from ROM Manager. You are also S-Off?
If you install an official ROM, you lose root. You don't want that.

I used this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211143
bone stock pre-rooted OTA. Flash through CWM recovery. Doesn't replace Radio or anything. Its just a ROM.zip you can flash. Wipe data/factory reset before flashing of course.
Thanks redpoint73 and martonikaj for your help. I was able to update the ROM.
One last question for the folks here, I performed a Titanium Pro Backup before upgrading the ROM.
Which one of the following restores should I perform now that I have upgraded to 2.3.4?
1. Restore missing apps with data
2. Restore all system data
3. Restore missing apps + all system data
4. Restore newer versions of user apps
5. Restore all apps with data
Thanks.

I usually do 5. Restore all apps with data when moving to a new ROM. (never restore system data unless you're re-flashing the same ROM). I usually select it, then scroll through the list and uncheck some apps that may cause issues. Things like Clocks, Browsers, etc. often overwrite system-level apps and can cause problems. YMMV.
Its in your best interest to perform a nandroid backup before doing a big restore of 100's of apps, as there is a chance that there may be some problems or incompatibilities that cause issues, and you want to be able to go back to a state before installing all those apps to troubleshoot without having to re-flash the entire ROM.
will the root be gone if i factory reset my mytouch 4g?
Yes. Everything Will be wipe, superuser too.
Wrong. Actually, no. Not at all.
Factory reset wipes the /data partition, which holds user data.
Superuser resides on /system partition, which isn't wiped, and the fresh system after wipe will retain root access. Superuser app might be installed on /data, but the actual SU file will be on /system.
To remove root, you need to unroot - or flash non-rooted stock ROM.
Right, "factory" reset is a bit of a misnomer on Android.
There is no backup of the factory firmware if you have modified your system partition.
But if you flash a full RUU or PD15IMG.zip of the stock ROM, then yes you will lose root. However if you still have Radio S-OFF, you will still be able to flash unsigned images through the bootloader.

What ROM do you have? This all depends on the current ROM you have. If you did not update your ROM, then you will lose root. If you only updated your ROM and did NOT update your recovery, you could ruin your device potentially by selecting that option from within the phone or the stock recovery.
However, if you have a custom (probably rooted already) ROM and you have a recovery like clockworkmod recovery installed, then go ahead and wipe away. You can also clear just your cache, dalvik and many other stuff, the menu has a lot of options.
Hi all,
I have a nexus 7 running Android 4.1.2 stock w/ root. Some months ago, I disabled the OTA update notification - but I can't seem to remember how!
I want to now re-enable OTA updates so that I can update to the latest android version, and not lose my installed apps.
I've searched the device for FOTAKill.apk inside /system/app, and its not found
I've also searched for frozen / hidden apps using Titanium Backup Pro... nothing
When I enter Settings -> About Tablet -> System Updates... it says I'm up to date... but I'm not, considering I'm running 4.1.2.
Any help or pointers in re-enabling OTA is appreciated!!
- make a full nandroid backup.
- using fastboot, flash the system.img file from the 4.2.2 factory image to the system partition.
- using your custom recovery, reflash a SuperSU root kit bundle.
- using the custom recovery, wipe cache and dalvik-cache.
If you don't like the result, restore the nandroid backup and proceed in a different fashion. It will probably break things like stickmount and any other changes that you caused in /system.
Note the above method is for use by lazy and sloppy users. A better approach is to make TiBu backups of only your market apps, bite the bullet, and start from scratch with a flash & (new) configuration of a pure stock ROM. In any case, every conceivable procedure should start with making a full nandroid backup and getting it copied to a safe place off the tablet.
I will also say that unless odd problems crop up, the portions of the factory install procedure (using fastboot) that deal with erasure or flashing of the userdata partition should be skipped, as these steps completely wipe your /data storage - including your /sdcard area in /data/media/0 and any CWM/TWRP nandroid backups!
It's not really clear why these steps would be needed unless the /data ext4 filesystem in the userdata partition got corrupted somehow. A more sly approach would be to use the custom recovery's "factory reset" procedure to clean up /data - either before or after flashing the factory ROM - and completely skip anything that touches the userdata partition in the factory install instructions.
good luck
Im planning to reflash my phone back to stock as a few things are messed up, will be flashing via odin the base firmware is UEND6 and will reflash the same firmware so that I can still root w/o tripping knox, would reflashing via Odin clear user data?
i guess not

I guess just flashing the firmware won't wipe the data.
I flashed stock over a CM install and forgot to wipe data. My stuff was still there but the install was definitely a little bit unstable with background apps crashing. It didn't wipe data, but the phone needed a data wipe afterwards to be usable...

I kinda need to get my data back before wiping, I installed 3 new xposed modules and I am not 100% sure which of the 3 is causing the issue, Im stuck at the Samsung logo.
EDIT:
Im wondering if factory reset would delete camera photos stored on the internal memory, if not I have most of my impt stuff backed up online.

Install TWRP recovery (will trip knox) and make a TWRP backup of the entire phone including data partition. Once inside TWRP recovery you can also mount /data and adb pull whatever data you need from it, including the backup. Not sure what to do if you need to access embedded app data that you can not pull through adb.
When I flashed stock without wiping data my files were still there though.

Still waiting for the download to complete. Samfirmware is only giving me 300kb/s and I dont know where else to get stock firmwares.
To close this issue with a resolved status, I would like to say one thing.
If you flash a leaked firmware - it will wipe your phone.
If you flash a stock firmware - it will NOT wipe your phone.
Factory reset will not wipe your internal SD.
Installing TWRP or anything unofficial will trip your KNOX. If your data is worth losing warranty - go for it
I was with a UEND6 firmware and just gonna flash the same to get my data back and factory reset the phone.
EDIT:
Got my data, everything seems to be perfectly working aside from the task manger, Gonna factory reset the phone and probably reflash with odin to have a clean start, would ticking repartition be necessary for a fresh install ? ( but I remember that required a PIT file )
Is this possible? Im familar with extracting bootloader, radio, system and boot img's from the factory image zip then using fastboot to install while keeping all settings and data. Can I do this to install Cyanogen or will it break everything?
What type of data are you talking about?
If you are talking about apps and app data, then I don't think this is possible. All your data (pictures, music, and other files/ folders) on the second partition (other than device) would be intact even if you do factory reset from recovery.
First this is a question, you are in the wrong sub forum. Second, system apps you can forget. But user apps (those you install), just backup with titanium Backup and restore after installing a new rom. I do this every time I change roms

Thanks. I thought that there would be too many differences between stock and CM especially gapps. Think I will need to do a clean install from TWRP to have CM12.
What are the bugs of CM12?
Sorry for my bad English
