Greetings! I'm having trouble getting Bluetooth tethering to work with my E4GT and would like some help from others on doing a bit of testing to confirm where the issue lies.
My setup....
NEXUS 10:
CM10.1 RC5
KTmanta kernel (latest)
Epic 4G Touch:
CM10.1 (dastin's wild for the night) 20130611
No kernel changes
Behavior:
Bluetooth connects properly and tethering shows as "connected" on both devices (nexus10 "use for Internet" succeeds)
Nexus 10 thinks it has no Internet connection. Chrome complains that Wifi and Mobile Data are disconnected. Play Store says "no connection"
I would appreciate if others could post their Bluetooth tethering results along with their hardware and firmware specs. AOSP only, please.
fwiw wifi tethering works fine.

Hey all, I can't seem to get my Xoom to connect to my incredible that is running the wifi hotspot app. I am guessing that is because it is an ad-hoc network. Anybody know of a work around?
I was having the same problem with my Droid. I ended up using the Bluetooth option and connected my Xoom to that. Works great.
i had the same issue with my d2g. i reinstalled from the market and changed the channel to ch. 8. now i'm tethering in high gear.
I seem to be having problems tethering my A101 to my HTC Touch HD.
Bluetooth seems hit and miss. Any suggestions on correct procedure.
I also have a little app on my phone for establishing it as a wifi router. The app is wmwifirouter. While my lap top see's it fine the A101 just doesnt see it. Anyone managed to ge their A101 to tether to a wifi type connection their WM phone?
i'm having problem with it as well ... the A101 to my SE x10i ... the bluetooth can "see" the mobile but when it cannot pair ... this is plain stupid!!
i've tried to contact the Archos Support but no solutions as yet.
I tether my HTC Evo to my Archos 70 IT with zero issues. My Evo is rooted and I run the "Wireless Tether" app in the market (their website). It starts an ad-hoc WiFi access point that the tablet can connect to. I've never had any issues. The app supposedly works over bluetooth as well but I've never tried it.
I'm in the exact same boat as you airnike, except the issue is tether to my BlackBerry Bold 9780. I found a thread (listed below) that seems to offer me the possibility of getting my connection up and running - since it seems that it was a problem in the Archos firmware in the first place, maybe you can solve it by following the thread.
Because I am so new I cannot just post the URL, so here it is in a conveluted fashion.

Stock Archos devices don't support ad-hoc networking, only infrastructure. Wireless Tether from the market supports ad-hoc and infrastructure mode. Some phones support infrastructure mode and some do not. If your phone does, you are lucky and it may work. There is a list of supported devices on the Wireless Tether website. There are also several threads on here about tethering and ad-hoc networking.
Tethering Blackberry is another problem, I think I read somewhere it was resolved now, but you need to type in a script in terminal.
Tethering Windows Mobile should be very easy. I always tether bluetooth from my Samsung i8000 to my 101. I never used wifi though as I reckon bluetooth is more battery friendly and speed is acceptable. What exactly is your tethering problem? what do you mean hit or miss? I've been consistently able to tether via bluetooth on my WM phone.
I have had some trouble tethering my Touch HD to my "101" as well - but finally this seems solved.
After pairing both devices, I found that I need to activate Bluetooth on both, then establish internet connection on the "HD" - and after that my "101" will tether fine.
The only strange thing I am a little unhappy with, is the fact that the tethering seems to break down when I turn off the screen of the mobile. When it switches off by itself, the connection appears to be stable.
i have a htc ozone wm phone how did u connect to your a101
What are the pro and cons of tethering via Bluetooth? I have Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone, and it worked perfectly right away. Could the Bluetooth use less battery?
Sent from my SilverBullet "HTCDesireZ running CM7"
This thread went a bit off topic eh?
Pete, did you ever get this working? I have a A101 16GB and a Touch HD. They tethered via bluetooth off the bat for me.
Running:
A101 16GB - UrukDrod 0.7
Touch HD - EnergyRom
If you want me to post steps, let me know.
Hello.
I'm having trouble tethering an Asus Transformer (stock) to my Touch HD (also stock).
I can pair them but they don't connect.
Tried the establish data connection/turn BT on/tether suggestion but no luck.
Any suggestions?
Cheers,
E

No clue. Wouldn't they know more in the Asus Transformer forums?

The Tethering & Portable hotspot on my HTC Desire Z (T-Mobile G2) is great with T-Mo's HSPA+ when it works. However, it consistently stops working from time to time. Specifically, I'll be surfing the internet and then, suddenly, the internet connection just stops.
Devices are my MacBook Pro connected to the Android hotspot on the Desire Z/G2. I will have a strong connection between MBP and the portable hotspot. Yet while surfing the internet, the actual internet connection suddenly becomes totally blocked after several minutes to an hour of use, like there is no data at all, even though the phone is showing strong data connectivity. This has only happened to me in ICS ROMS (CM9 & meXdroidMod Fried Ice Cream 3). I am also running the V6 Supercharger Script. When I had a Gingerbread ROM (didn't have V6 script), this never happened. Could ICS or the script be the problem? Has anyone else experienced this?
UPDATE: When the internet connection stops working and I turn my Portable Hotspot off, the little status notification thing under the words "Portable Wi-fi Hotspot" says "Error". Also, if I reboot my phone. Hotspot works again.
Lastly, I cannot figure out how to get USB tethering or Bluetooth tethering functioning as a workaround so if anyone has any tips there, that would be great.
Thanks,
Brian
P.S. I can't post in Android development because I don't have "10 helpful posts" so if anyone wants to post this on the forum for meXdroidMod's Fried Ice Cream 3 or the CM9 forum for me, that would be just DANDY!
EDIT: As of May 25th, 2013, I have still NOT fixed this issue.
---------------------------
I have a major issue about tethering (USB and wifi) from my N4.
Here's my info that's hopefully sufficient.
Carrier: T-Mobile
Plan: 30 dollars (unlimited data [throttled at 5GB]/unlimited text/100 min)
ROM: CM 10.1 nightlies (5/1/2013 nightly)
Kernel: franco Kernel (Milestone 2)
Rooted: Yes
Unlocked: Yes
What I want: I want to tether (extremely prefer for it to be wirelessly) to my laptop/iPad with ease.
Devices I'm trying to tether:
1. Windows 7 64-bit desktop with wireless USB adapter.
2. Another Nexus 4 from my girlfriend (on Paranoid Android)
3. iPad running iOS 5, jailbroken
Attempts:
1. Tried using built-in wireless. It has a connection to connect to, but it says "limited connectivity". Cannot use internet.
1a. I've tried using Wifi Tether (https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/).
It doesn't work on "Auto" device profile.
It doesn't work with "Generic ICS/JB (wlan0 OR wlan1)". It worked with "Generic". I haven't tried the rest.
Result is that it is able to set-up the tether and have nothing failing in the "Show Log". However, my two laptops cannot detect them. My iPad sees it but cannot connect. It just says "cannot connect" and doesn't even ask me to input the password.
1b. I've used Barnacle Tether. Doesn't even work.
1c. I'm willing to try FoxFi and others I see, but I really do want Wifi Tether to work.
2. Tried using built-in USB tether. Doesn't work. It says "no connection" when done on my computer. Cannot use internet.
3. Tried using Wifi Tether. I cannot connect to it via iPad nor computer.
4. Tried using Clockwork USB tether. IT WORKS! HOWEVER, why only that method? Built-in USB doesn't work, nor do the other methods I tried. It's also annoying with the USB.
EDIT: T-Mobile finally figured out I was tethering. I was NOT using a user agent changer.
I have tried to search the general troubleshoot forum and also the franco Kernel and CM 10.1 threads about tethering issues, but it seems as if other people with my plan/kernel/ROM are getting tethering to work properly.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Tried using AOKP w/ faux kernel, still the same result.
I am thinking it is less due to the ROM, but I'm still not sure.
what is your issue exactly? what happens when you try to tether?

I have a stock Nexus 4 and have a similar issue with Wifi tethering.
Once I enable it other devices (a Galaxy Tab2 and an iPhone 3GS) can see the tether and connect to it successfully. Unfortunately, there is no transmission of data (through the browser or email client on either device).
I'm in the UK on Orange monthly tariff.
Any thoughts?

i've had exactly the same exerience as yours trying to tether a blackberry playbook to my N4. i was hoping it was the playbook!
i'm also on Orange.
i used to tether my previous android Hd2 using its wifi hotspot no problem.
Try different cable
I had the same problem and it was driving me crazy. I reloaded windows and tried all kinds of drivers. As it turns out the problem was the usb cable. After using a different cable everything started to work. I don't know if this helps but that was my experience
hi OP,
did you ever get the wifi hotspot working?

My hotspot works with PDAnet but not just using the android system.
Success! :good:
i fixed my tethering problems with Orange (EE) by simply phoning up customer support and asking them to switch on tethering. this was no problem for them. it apparently needs to be enabled at base. there is no charge for this and i was given a "1GB cap" which presumably comes off my 1GB data bundle.
i didn't have to make any changes in my phone settings.
a "service update" text came soon thereafter and following a restart the phone has since been tethering perfectly to my laptop and BB playbook.

I'm on stock android 4.2 and my native tether works fine. Maybe it is a cm issue
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Using stock here and works fine. You are turning WiFi off, right?
I succesfully connected my Nexus 4 to my PC using USB tethering by installing the "Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device" driver manually:
open the Device Manager
select "Nexus 4" and choose "Update Driver Software..."
choose "Browse my computer for driver software"
choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
select "Microsoft Corporation" in the left column
choose "Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device" in the right column
I still haven't found a solution and I've searched the N4 forums thoroughly. I've tried the VPN + Wifi Tether tweaked app. No luck.

That seems do-able, but really quite annoying. I have already found a USB tethering method that works but I will try this out when I have time.
Thanks. I'm still looking for a wireless method though.
It was dirt easy to tether on Virgin Mobile... Then again it was a different phone/ROM/plan.
For me what fixed the problem (partially) is enabling USB Debugging. That way I can tether via usb. Using the phone as a hotspot is still a no go. My Windows 8 laptop connects to the network however there's no internet access.
never had any issues tethering wirelessly or wired with tmobile, 5 years going strong(started with the g1). what kind of security settings are you using with the wireless tether built into the n4? im currently using wpa psk for security in the tether settings.
the problem is franco kernel. I had the same issue and basically flashed every other kernel and tethering started working.
EDIT: I flashed back to stock kernel and back. now franco kernel works.

I too had this exact problem. The 'stable' version 'Milestone 3' of the franco kernel would not connect correctly for USB tethering. My Windows 7 box would see the connection, but there was no internet. Flashing back to stock and faux kernels worked, and also the lasted nightly #163 franco kernel works (for me).
Hopefully this info helps someone else.
Hello,
To start off, I have a USCellular S4 w/ CM10.1, currently the 7/9 nightly. I am running baseband version R970VXUAMDL and have not modified the kernel.
I have been having issues with wifi tethering both on full stock and with CM10.1. In both scenarios, I'll be able to speed test very highly from my phone (22MBit down and 5-10MBit up with low ping) but devices connected to the wifi hotspot constantly drop packets.
Usually I can connect my tablet to the hotspot and then it'll have about a 50% packet loss for a while and eventually drop to a limited connection and every packet form a ping will either time out or return 'destination host unreachable'. I've tried using the CM10.1 framework tether and the Wifi Router app on CM10.1 and stock. They've both had the same issue.
While connected, my tablet will report excellent wifi signal strength.
Any suggestions? Where should I start looking to get this resolved?
As an update. USB tether is working quite well. This is purely a WiFi tether issue.
