[Q] Nexus 4 Rom And Google Updates. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys!
This is my first post here so I'm sorry if this is not the place to ask.
I'm interested to Root and put Rom on my Nexus 4.
My question is, it is possible to have Root and Rom on Nexus 4 and still get Google updates.
Hope for an answer soon , Thanks in advance.

Not if you use a custom Rom. You would have to go back to stock to receive the update, or wait for the Rom developer to incorporate the update.

Couldn't you just use voodoo root keeper?

HELP! ADB

Hi I've been trying to root my Nexus s from day one with no success is there a better way other than ADB for some reason I have no success on ADB

Hi there I just rooted last night so I'd be glad to help if I can!
Where are you getting stuck?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
You shouldn't actually be using ADB, you should be using fastboot. First off, are you on a mac or a PC?
Not trying to thread jack but maybe you guys can help me. I'd like to upgrade my phone to 2.3.3, root, and use the voodoo sound and colors. Any help? Thanks.

There are HOW TO GUIDES in the development section. You can refer those for rooting.

Superboot is easy but I've never been a fan of how it mods your kernel. If you are on a mac you can use the link to the mac rooting guide in my signature

What do you mean by mod the kernel? Sorry new terminology to me
Does it mean it will replace the stock kernel?

Yes it does. It doesn't do anything noticeable but its just as easy to just root the regular way and there is nothing being modified.

Unrooting device

Hi guys.
I need to send google my device and i rooted it last day. I used the toolkit that can be found on the site, option 8.
If i do a factory reset, would that be enought?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
No, but the best way to do it is flash the stock images from Google, will be 100% stock.
Don't forget to lock bootloader as well!
Sent from my Jelly Nexus 4
Flash a factory Google image, then make sure your recovery is NOT CWM or TWRP and then re lock the bootloader. Then you should be good to go!

In 4.2.2 I used AOKP. I think they're working on 4.3 now (hopefully it will be out soon).
Cyanogemod is pretty awesome and simple too.

Not if you don't reboot after you unlock. Flash a custom recovery right after you unlock wipe caches then reboot = no data loss

I don't recommend toolkits they aren't needed for nexus devices. Follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266654

If you are looking for some performance enhancements then you just need a root and CWM(recovery) installed for flashing kernels, check Nexus 4 toolkit. Custom ROMS are more for aesthetic enhancements, and the most worked ROM on the area of aesthetic changes is Paranoid Android ROM, they have regular builds for Nexus 4. So check them out, Enjoy your N4 ! .

Update to 4.3

I'm trying to get the system update from the settings but it keep saying that is my device is up to date.
anyone know why??

Honestly, it should come up naturally..If it doesn't work, you can always download the stock image from Google site and flash it manually.. Just search for the name efrant in this forum, you'll get what you seek

Pretty sure you only get the update on stock rom. Are you sure the update isn't from PA?
Nope, i checked the Settings in System updates and got a message about 4.3 system update.

4.3 update applied to rooted 4.2.2

Hey everyone, I had a question. I have a rooted s4 on 4.2.2 and I might upgrade to 4.3. If I were to do that would it just get rid of my root and update to 4.3 or will it wreck havoc on my device? Or should I not even update because its not worth it? Also are there any good root keeper apps that work? I heard that the su survival mode doesn't work so well.
Thank you. Much appreciated! Sorry for all the ?

I did take the time to read it and all I see in that thread is an old thread stating that the 4.3 update will he released Nov. 13 which was pulled, and now its the 30th. Also I kept reading (I even read the posts that didn't have anything to do with the thread) believe it or not, and couldn't find it, but its okay. I appreciate the help. Thx.

Why would you want to give up the ability to root and or have custom ROM? I must have missed the part on fascination with 4.3. But in the end the decision is yours good luck.

Eventually. If I where on an unlocked bootloader like you, I'd stay put so I can load other roms. If you update to MF3, all you have is SafetyStrap and other 4.2.2 roms. Updates to MK2 and your tw 4.3, with root but no custom recovery, no unlocked bootloader and no way to downgrade.

Yeah I was definitely gonna stay 4.2.2 for a bit until a root method came out. Earlier I asked what the new baseband would be so I could keep checking Google for a root method.

Never is a long time, as someone else posted eventually one or more of the developers will find away to root and have custom recovery sit tight and wait for it, Once you take the MF3 update you can not go back. I'm on MDL and am enjoying running CM and what else is out their. It will come.

Whichever road you take do whole lots of reading and when you think you've read enough read some more and always do a backup. Long time ago I thought I had read enough and only to find had I read more I would have found that the method I was trying did not apply to my phone I had an Atrix 2 and the method was for the Atrix and Droid. I ended up with a paper weight. Good luck and take your time
