Hello, I know that this is pretty random question, but my son has a birthday on 21'st next month(he will become sixteen years old) and he is a huge fan of the Nexus 7 tablet and I want to buy him one. The thing is that I have read that Google will make an upgrade to Nexus 7 around these months(it is only a rumor) so the question is should I buy him the Nexus 7 tablet or should I wait for the upgraded version(though it will take a lot of time till it get released in my country.)
Thanks,
Best regards,
Ripton.
Yes.
Sent from my cell phone telephone....
Nexus 7 is awesome device even today, so, for the sixteen year old boy is good enough.
i am 16 too and happy with my n7,
but i would suggest just to wait a little
otherwise current n7 is great

If you can snatch a 32gb one for ~$200 even, I'd say go for it.
If not, I'd say give ur kid a raincheck or give $200-250 and see he wants to do with it. Buy today (Nexus 7) or wait for 2.0 to come out.
Personally I'd like to get my hands on a next gen because of the retina-like display + way faster Quad Core.
While the current Nexus 7 isn't bad, it's still 1 year old technology. It's adequate, but just make sure you aren't paying full price for it.
I guess I will wait till 10th or 15th of July if no new news pop up about the next gen I will get him the normal nexus 7.
Also, do you think that the "old" nexus 7 will be able to be upgraded to the newer version of android (4.3 or whatever it will be called)?
Thanks,
Best regards,
Ripton.

I was just reading through tons of news on portals, and I can't find any info about Nexus S or Galaxy Nexus and 4.2 being rolled out. I mean, Google surely has already decided what to do with us.
I mean honestly, I know Cyanogen or AOKP, or hopefully Rasbean will keep updating my favourite phone ever (really, I have never had a phone this awesome. Pioneer of it's price range and specs!) but I want to know if Google still likes their Nexus S.
it cant be that hard, I mean there really isnt anything new.
I wondered how long it would take for a thread title like this would come up..HAHA!
Can't see why not, it got 4.1 so should get 4.2 as it's not a huge update. Well, that's my wishful thinking anyway!
Still JB, will get

Yes, the Nexus S will get 4.2 officially. It will get 5.0 as well, if not officially then by CyanogenMod.

I'd say ^^ pretty much ends this convo. Right on target.
Nice to hear all that. Nexus S ftw
Why not
Our Nexus S it's untill powerfull...
It better! I just bought a used one yesterday!
I think the chances are pretty good that the NS will get 4.2, but beyond that I'm skeptical. We're coming up on the phone's two-year anniversary for one thing. It's also begun to chug a bit with Jelly Bean, and I doubt the next major update will be any less resource intensive. Between the age and the hardware limitations, I suspect we're in the twilight months of Google support for the Nexus S.
must will get 4.2.... not official no problem
this will probably be the last update the Nexus S gets.
Good thing tho, you know most likely that XDA will have some form of port.
I'm getting the Nexus 4 tho!!! my contract is almost up. I might even get it off contract! (AU$400 for 32GB, thats dirt cheap compared to the iPhone 5 which is AU$900! That's less than half the price, for better specs... and android... and build quality is improved dramatically from the previous Nexusesss)
I think it will get 4.2 ... it an incremental upgrade, so anything 'jellybean' we should get
Can't wait to try 4.2
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
It will get official 4.2 for sure, but key lime pye will be here only unofficial.

last year, when I bought my Nexus S, someone told me: "It's a year's old phone.. don't waste your money..."
I'm almost sure for 4.2 ...
I personally think about a Google "3 letters law" for Nexus devices. Nexus One went from E(Eclair) to G(Gingerbread), passing by Frojo, Nexus S will go from G to J passing by ICS, and GNex will "live" from I to L ... Officially speaking, I mean And, of course, I hope there will always be some clever group (like CyanogenMod, for example) or "one man band" who enjoy to develop ROM or kernel for our preferred devices :fingers-crossed:

You made the right choice .
It remains to be seen if the Nexus S and Xoom will get 4.2 or if 4.1.2 was the last update. We won't know until 4.2 gets released to AOSP. I will say that since they seem to have axed the Honeycomb-style tablet interface from 4.2, the Xoom may be out. As for the Nexus S...historically Google has only maintained support for the current and previous phone generation, which would now be the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. That said, however, I don't see anything major that would lead me to believe that the Nexus S couldn't run 4.2...unless they tossed out support for capacitive buttons entirely.
Regardless of whether or not there is a stock 4.2 ROM for either device, I'm sure the developers here will have custom ROMs that have it baked in.
I have been waiting for the Nexus 7 2, also referred to Nexus 7.2 aka Nexus 7 HD since the rumours started.
I was very disappointed when in may it wasnot announced as expected. Almost at the end of June, we still have no confirmation
Last week, two Asus devices, the K008 and K009, were discovered listed under Bluetooth SIG and FCC certifications. Although the Asus device isn't confirmed as Google's Nexus 7 2 tablet, the coincidence is a large one. The Nexus tablet is expected to be released to the public in July, and the filing was dated to June.
This is going to be a heck of tablet with excellent features.
Latest rumours are :
Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor
2GB Ram
Android 4.3
Front 1.3 MP camera & 5MP rear camera
1080p resolution
16/32 Gb variants without SD card
LTE support would be added
Price is expected to be 200-250 US dollars.
With all this attraction and everything, I am googling at least ten times a day about new articles written about it.
Anyone has any more to say or waiting as patiently as me ?
I just want to know, is it just me or there are others like me ?
Do post your views and experiences of Nexus 7 !
Yeah im waiting too. Got my missus birthday on the 21st of July and was going to get her a Nexus 7 till i heard about the Nexus 7 2. I will be pissed if it comes out just after i buy another Nexus 7. (I already have one).

But I am waiting till end of July, I hope it is released by then or I be travelling without it .....
But my guess is that, It will be in stores before 20th July. ( America companies usually have this strategy to release it before 4th July and this is usually the deadline)

Hi,
How long Google will provide updates for Nexus 4 after Nexus 5 is out ???
Thanks.
well, let's put it this way: galaxy nexus is technically a 2011 device (q4 2011) and it still gets updates. nexus s is a 2010 device (q4 2010) and it does not. the last update for nexus s was 4.1.2 late last year. I would expect about another year to a year and a half of updates....give or take a few months. Depending on the update schedule in that time period, there's a chance we would see 6.x or a very late 5.x build as our final update.
I'm obviously just speculating, but this is all based on past history with nexii, so please don't start a battle over this, anyone and scream for proof or anything lol
probably untill the end of next year...
It is MUCH more powerfull than Galaxy Nexus, so it may go even further...

Hi,
Thanks for the info.
18 months is the promised duration. any more than that is a blessing..
Hit Thanks if I helped : from Tapatalk
As mentioned above, we would mostly see updates till the latest 5.x build or maybe even the 6.x build. What's interesting though is that starting from 5.0 Google is supposedly focusing on making android a smooth experience even on low power single core 512 MB RAM devices (did the nexus one have similar specs?). So maybe we might even see updates for 2 years or so. Just speculating. Even if we don't, we've always got these amazing devs, hats off to them.

While the Nexus 4 Hardware can handle it.
4.1.2 for the Nexus S made it a little less snappy, that's why it was the latest update for the Nexus S.

yeah, but if the rumors are true, 5.0 will be better optimized for devices like nexus s with low ram. ram consumption is the biggest issue with running jelly bean on older devices right now.

Until 2015
Since the specs on current gen phones are so good now, the N4 could probably be supported for many years.
Most Android updates need/recommend 1GB of RAM and a basic dual core processor.
Hi guys!
So I was wondering, the 2013 Nexus 7 model was recently released & it does pack in a lot of specs since it's new. I was thinking of going for it then I was wondering whether to wait for next KFHD. I've been reading rumours, it looks like overpasses the N7 in benchmarks and also will have much better/newer hardware (for instance, Snapdragon 800 CPU).
What do you guys think? Should I go for the Nexus right now or wait at least until the new Kindle gets announced? I reckon CyanogenMOD would be available later, so software ain't a problem.

Far from credible. Honestly if it doesn't come from Google or Android Police don't beleve it. Actually don't even trust Google just AP.

Hmm ... Not sure if Andoid M classifes as a update or as patch . IMHO its both ,since 5.1 is sluggish and tad buggy .
No updates would be bad and it sucks . One might think why invest in a expensive Nexus device when updates are so short lived . Apple fanboys might have some thing to brag about .
I'm not very concerned. Even if Google doesn't give us the update, it probably won't be very long before CyanogenMod comes out with it. I'm willing to bet that this tablet continues to get community support for another couple of years.
Without a CM Flo or deb device maintainer I doubt CM based on Android M would appear officially for us. Maybe other ROMs that have flo maintainers/devs will bring Android M to our devices after making 5.1.1 Lollipop binaries and stuff compatible with M

The only thing keeping me on Android is the ability to root, secure my devices, and retain full control of the file system - you know, administer the device. This is slowly being taken away, and when it does, I will probably jump ship. Apple makes quality hardware, and iOS isn't awful. It just doesn't give you any easy methods to truly administer the device without jumping through hoops.
In a world where you are a guest on your own device regardless of OS, Apple will come out the winner.

Besides the point you mentioned , Android does have other benefits ... But I was talking more in terms of Nexus devices . If high end devices & Nexus devices (from the google stable) dont get updates for longer , it would be crappy .No point investing in an expensive Nexus device..
If they stopped selling the N7 2013 in October 2014, 18 months of updates would end April 2016 I think.

Despite rumors circulating about the chance of official M for flo, I doubt that it will be left out. After all, Google recently announced monthly updates for a list of nexus devices that includes flo. Even if those updates came only in the form of patches for L, I'm sure unofficial support will be there. Even my old galaxy nexus has unofficially made it to the latest revision of lollipop...
I believe we will get it. It just turned 2 and its only like 3 month's older than the nexus 5. It'll be the last major update but it'll still get it. The 2 year guarantee is just that, a guarantee it doesn't mean they'll necessarily cut off devices at that point

Totally agree, 5.1.1 runs smooth on my N7 so I see no reason from a hardware perspective that the N7 shouldn't get M. I think it will be last release so lets hope its a good one.
When I bought my wife's 2013 Nexus 7, it was mid-2014 and I thought for sure it was my only chance of owning a Nexus device, living in the US. I bought it for me, but then I discovered I don't like tablets very much. Fortunately, my wife loves it, so I wiped it and made it hers.
From 4.2 to 4.3, 4.4, 5.0, and now 5.1, it's had four major updates. That's more than any Android phone I've owned has gotten. First got one, second got none, third one got three, fourth one got one so far. Samsung, Motorola, and Samsung again on US Cellular, and HTC on Verizon. All flagships but the first one. It seems to me that I really care about updates on my phones, but on the tablet, it doesn't matter. The tablet doesn't feel like a mission-critical device. It feels like a media device. Had the price gap not been so wide, I wonder if I shouldn't have just gotten an iPad. Not that the Nexus 7 is bad. I just found that a tablet didn't do anything for me. It's just a bigger screen.
If Google is going to cut Nexus updates off after just two years, that's better than a lot of OEM phones get. Though, I do wonder, why did the Nexus 4, released in 2012, get the M preview, but not flo, released in 2013? Or am I mistaken? Was the Nexus 4 abandoned as well?

Marshmallow hasn't been released so there is no AOSP Source made public from Google. ROMs will appear once Android 6.0 and it's Source Code is released (rumored by the end of this month)
