I crave a brightness button

I have found all kinds of widgets for controlling brightness, but they all have one disadvantage - you have to first go to the home screen and then click on the widget. I really want a way to control brightness from any application without having to leave the application to go back to the home screen. The CM9 based rom I'm using (Paranoid Android) actually has something like this ... but I don't like it for two reasons. The first is that it takes two taps to bring up the brightness slider. (One tap to open the notification window, and a second tape to bring up the toggle screen). The 2nd reason (and more significant) is that the slider is quite small and for me it does not feel very responsive or easy to control. The brightness slider control from some of the widgets I have tried are much easier to use.
Ideally I could bring up a brightness widget by long pressing on the physical home button. Currently this long press on my note will bring up the recently used apps, but this function is already served by a soft button provided by CM9. I've read that the ADWlauncherEX will allow you to reprogram the function of the long press - although installing and learning how to use a launcher seems like overkill, especially since I have a rom that already includes quite a sophisticated launcher.
I found an app that would bring up a brightness slider when you clicked on the vol up or down buttons. This worked well for brightness although was a major drag when all I wanted to do was adjust the volume. I also found an application that would allow you to call an app or a widget in response to a double or triple click of the volume buttons. That seemed ideal because it would give me quick access to a brightness control without interfering with the main use of the volume rocker. Unfortunately that application seems to have been discontinued (why!) and I couldn't even seem to find an old verison of that.
Another idea would be to reassign one of the soft keys provided by CM9. Since these soft keys merely duplicate the functions of the existing galaxy note keys (the physical home button and the two buttons on either side of it). Unfortunately I have yet to find an application that can remap one of those buttons. Another idea would be to add another soft button near the 3 soft buttons that are already there. (Are their any applications that can do that?)
And finally I figured that brightness could be controlled via screen gestures. I did find some applications that claimed to be able to do this, although I couldn't get them to work on my Note.
If you know of any application or method that can provide a brightness control button, please let me know as this is the only remaining aspect of the note's user interface that is still driving me nuts.

Wasn't there a feature in CyanogenMod 7 that would allow to change brightness via sliding sideways in notification area? Too bad it never worked for me in any of the phones I tried CM7 in. I understood it should have worked with no slider? Just sliding your finger accross the notifications area? That would be better than a slider imo.

I've not used paranoid android, I'm using the RC of CM9 and that does have status bar brightness control. To turn it on you go to system, then Status bar and there is a tick box. Maybe that is still included in PA if it is CM9 based? It lets you control the brightness from anywhere just by swiping left and right on the status bar.
It is not as nice as the notification tray slider you can find in AOKP roms, and there used to be a mod for CM9 that did this, but it no longer works, but it is better than nothing.

Thanks for the tip John. Qbright certainly has one of the best brightness slider bars I've seen and the configurable buttons are great. However I have to say I'm somewhat mystified about how you use it. Qbright says you can activate it by long pressing on the search button. Search button? Do we have such a thing? On either side of the physical home button I only have the menu and back buttons. By long pressing the menu button I do get the search menu ... but it doesn't bring up Qbright. There is also a "Google" button at the top of the launcher. Pressing on that also brings up the search menu, but again it can't bring up Qbright. I'm running Paranoid Android. Maybe that's the problem. Does the stock ICS have a search button?

Hi Tinderbox. Thanks for your reply but I think you seriously misinterpreted my question. I mentioned that I like that the Qbright buttons are configurable so I obviously found the preferences menu. But I was asking how you bring up the Qbright widget (other than clicking on its icon from the home screen of course). The documentation suggests this can be done by "long pressing on the search button". (There is no preference item related to this). I couldn't bring up the Qbright widget by long pressing on anything, so I'm wondering how you do this. If you actually have to go back to the home screen to start the widget, that would greatly detract from the beauty of the widget (which I'm sure is why they put the search long press capability into Qbright). But as I indicated in my previous message, it seems that the galaxy note does not have a dedicated search button, so this feature may not work. There are so many ways one could start such a widget I'm somewhat amazed that no one has figured out how to do it. (Or maybe they have and I am just in the dark or very confused). One way would be to long press on the back button. As far as I know, this currently does nothing so there would be no drawback what so ever. Perhaps a long press on the volume up or down button could also work for such a thing. Or an extra item could be added to the menu that appears when you press the power button. Or since I have a CM9 derived rom, it gives me three more soft keys (back, home, and recent apps). A long press on any of those could be used to bring up the widget. Or even a regular press on the first two could be used since they are duplicates for buttons I already have elsewhere.
Is this a valid question, or am I out in left field somewhere?

I once accidentally set my brightness so low that I couldn't see the screen AT ALL.
I found myself really wishing there was some foolproof way to reset the screen to 100% brightness.
For example, rebooting the phone auto-resets the brightness to 100% or something.
I also tried using tasker so some obscure combination like volume+home could also reset the brightness.
I don't recall how I managed to reset my phone - i couldn't see anything. I think I just flailed about on it.

Try kimi's.15 toggles. Gives you 15toggles in the notification bar, brightness being one of them. Need to flash it via recovery though.

Can i flash that in temprary cwn? I have a stock rom with the temp.cwm root.method

At first I thought that might be the answer, but I ran into two problems with it. The main one was that I would accidently change the brightness pretty often when I was just trying to click on an icon for instance. (Unless I made the slider very thin ... but then it was too hard to grab the slider). The other problem was that some of my full screen applications would force themselves on top and the slider would not activate.
Someone in another thread suggested what I now feel is the ultimate solution:

This solves all my problems with the galaxy note.
I can't believe this was so hard to find. I can't imagine that anyone would uninstall this application after trying it. It's like getting 3 extra hardware buttons for free!
I'm using:
- Home,Home to bring up Qbright.
- Home,Back to bring up papyrus (you never know when you need to scribble a note)
- Home,Menu to bring up a toggle widget (haven't decided which one yet, although I'm sure it will be easier to use than the built in PA one).

You can adjust the brightness on most Note ROMs by deactivating auto brightness and tap + hold on the statusbar and slide the finger.
Left = Decrease the brightness
Right = Increase the brightness

Tutorial: 2012-11-01 v1.2.7 Atrix 4G on Motorola Lapdock, Tablet UI running CM10 (JB)

Version 1.2.7
If you're looking for the change log, check out post #3.
The test below were performed using a Motorola Atrix 4G, running epinetr's unofficial CM10 JB (Jelly Bean) found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781970 and the Motorola Lapdock for Atrix 4G, available at Radio Shack for $20 (USD) while supplies last. Epinter's JB invokes HDMI mirroring for all HDMI connections and does not launch Motorola Webtop. Much of this information is probably applicable for other CM10 builds and potentially CM9 and CM7.
This tutorial takes into consideration:
- the keys that are present on the Lapdock
- does not reference keys that are not present (Windows, Apple or Menu key) or do not work (ctrl, caps lock)
- does not reference keys combination or shortcuts that do not work with the lapdock i.e. please don't post links to Android keyboard shortcut threads thinking you are contributing a gold mine of new shortcuts that don't work with the lapdock keyboard
FYI If you connect the Atrix to the lapdock while booting, keep the lapdock lid closed until it has fully booted. The Atrix will not properly recognise the keyboard and mouse. Also, when using the lapdock, the Atrix display remains on and below you can see a pretty slick method to turn the Atrix display off, and maintain video over HDMI. This seems to be a nice battery saver tweak introduced with version 1.2 of this tutorial.
How to dock the Atrix to the lapdock:
Docking the Atrix to the lapdock is slightly tricky as the two connectors make everything quite stiff. With the lapdock screen closed and Atrix booted and the display off, use the left hand as a guide, with your left fingers behind the Atrix (from the finger print scanner) and left thumb over the screen (over the ear piece). Hold the Atrix in your right hand over the dock plate with fingers curled beneath the right most side of the dock connector. Using your right hand, squeeze the Atrix down onto the connectors. This seems to be the easiest way to get the Atrix docked and also ensures that you are not applying pressure to the hinge mechanism.
open lapdock screen = turn on lapdock (only if Atrix is docked)
close lapdock screen = turn off lapdock (even if Atrix is docked, but will still charge Atrix)
While docked:
the Atrix on-screen keyboard will be disabled, while the lapdock screen is on
the Atrix touch screen can still be used at all times
the Atrix will charge at all times
The battery life of the dock is nothing short of amazing. If you use the lapdock for hours and hours, and you reach the point that the lapdock dies, you'll unplugging your Atrix fully charged.
If while using the lapdock the hdmi resolution becomes pixelated close the lid and reopen OR undock and redock the phone. This occurs when an app forces the display to portrait. The HDMI pixel scaling does not recover correctly.
Optimizations:
I suggest enabling the following options:
System Settings > Developer Options > Show touches (You can still use the Atrix screen as a touch screen. This enables you to see where you are touching on the phone display)
System Settings > Hardware Keys > Show action overlay (This provides a clickable action overflow menu in every app [looks like three dots]. That's the same as the Atrix lower left menu button)
You can use the Atrix in phone UI or tablet UI while docked. The advantage of tablet UI is the scaling of objects on the screen is optimized for the larger screen. Basically, you can fit more on the screen. Also, there are dedicated soft buttons for back, home and recent apps which is handy for mouse use, considering that the Atrix is hidden behind the screen.
How to change to tablet UI (and back to phone UI):

You can manually edit build.prop, but you quickly realize that a more automated approach is needed. After much testing, I discovered that the majority of DPI changer apps set the permissions on build.prop incorrectly and cause a soft brick. Others simply did not work on the Atrix. There was only one application that worked and it updates the build.prop file to do so. Install 'resolution change / DENSITY' from the Google Play Store.

2. Enter the screen density for the mode that you wish to enter follows:

3. Press Apply (do not you the 'Apply + Reboot' or '+' as the phone crashes)
4. Reboot (if you are docked remember to disconnect the Atrix undocked until the boot completes)

METHOD 2 (more difficult but reccomended)
The advantage of this method is that the Google Play Store presents apps for a 240 DPI device, regardless of what DPI you are currently set to for the Atrix 4g UI.
Create /data/local.prop add the following entry using a text editor, e.g. using into Root Explorer, then reboot:

How to turn off (and on) the LCD and button back lights:
This method turns the backlights to the LCD and buttons off, while keeping them powered. This is useful as they can still be used, but saving valuable power that would otherwise be lighting the screen and buttons that are blocked by the larger HDMI display.

This app is where all things related to screen and button backlight off / on is headed. There are currently some undesirable results on the Atrix 4G related to button backlight and auto brightness requiring a reboot and dock detection also triggering screen off when docked to the Multimedia dock (not good).

- UNCHECK Auto HDMI/MHL Detection (there is not HDMI state awareness on the CM10 Kernel)
- CHECK Wake-lock (stop phone from going to sleep)
- CHECK Wifi-Lock (stops wifi standby policy from triggering Wifi sleep)
- CHECK Handle button back light (turns button backlight off and on with screen off and on)
- CHECK Handle Auto-brightness (enables automatic brightness upon screen on)
- CHECK Return home screen (auto return to home screen when

Scroll wheel on mouse will trigger launcher drawer and desktop to swipe left and swipe right with each wheel click.
Lapdock Keyboard operation:
Shortcuts in all situations:
esc = Back
left, right, up, down arrows = move the focus (cursor/selection) one to the left, right, up, down
enter = same as a touch or mouse click on the item with focus (cursor/selection)
alt + right arrow = move to the far right
alt + left arrow = move to the far left
alt + down arrow = move to the bottom
alt + up arrow = move to the top
alt + tab = launch the legacy recent apps screen (last 6 apps), let go of tab to select the app
fn + left arrow (home) = Return to launcher home screen
fn + right arrow (end) = turn Atrix and lapdock displays off but it can sometimes crash
fn + 1 (F1) = action overflow menu (Atrix lower left menu button)
fn + 3 (F1) = Launch phone call log
fn + 4 (F4) = see fn + right arrow above
Shortcuts for Browser:
start typing = Search using your default search provider
(I recommend setting the default home page to blank as is no longer needed)
space = scroll down one page
arrow down = move link focus down on page one link at a time
arrow up = move link focus up on page one link at a time
enter = select link that currently has focus (same as a click or a touch)
shift + arrow = move cursor to tab selection area (you can then let go of the shift key)
arrow left or right = select other tab
press enter = switch to that tab if not the current tab
press enter = close tab if the current tab is selected
arrow to the right until the + (new tab) symbol is selected and press enter = create new tab
Shortcuts for editing text (email, text messages):
left, right, up or down arrow = move cursor one position left, right, up or down
alt + left arrow = go to the beginning of the line

Wish list (things I would like to figure out how to do but have not yet):
While editing text, move cursor one word to the left or right (ctrl + arrow in Windows)
Toggle between tablet and smartphone ui without reboots. This is only possible with Motorola Webtop 3 and not functional on the Lapdock using any ICS leak ROMs. Webtop3 is fully functional over all other hdmi links (direct as well as HD dock)
SOLVED in V.1.2: Turn off Atrix display while lapdock display (hdmi) is on.

A couple things I would add to the wishlist would be to somehow only change the output resolution (if that's even possible) so a reboot is not always required to drop it on the lapdock, and to also have the ability to change the pointer speed for the trackpad since it's kinda slow and a bit difficult to navigate. Thanks for posting this tutorial. Maybe everything will fall into place when ICS is released and some talented devs can make webtop work with JB?

Track pad speed can be adjusted under System Settings, Language & Input, Pointer Speed.
Re changing density on the fly, there are some methods, but the only one I can get to work is as posted. More to follow.

Been in that folder a bunch of times and never went all the way to the bottom. Are you able to control your audio? Mine works but only plays at max volume despite decreasing it in on the phone and through the dock

You're right. The audio on the lapdock is not adjustable. If you flip HDMI audio flag off, the audio moves to the phone loud speaker and is then adjustable.

Home Button is Keyboard Home. Esc is return, and F1 will act as the menu key. i can't remember which one rotates the screen, but there's one.

Great find. Seems to be working pretty well. The only thing I found was after I turn the lcd back to system default it doesn't come back on right away, but after I look and unlock the phone it comes back. Switching the lcd on from the app works right away, just not the system default

I'm not surprised to hear that. I noticed the app retains the option so I mentioned it so that we note that the app setting does not revert back to system default when using the other techniques. I would guess that is a value that the app stores internally only so is of no consequence. The lock and unlock toggle you mention is a fail safe that the app developer introduced for people that accidentally set their back light to off, with no way to turn back on.
Btw don't forget that lock and unlock has shown to cause the phone to unexpectedly reboot in my tests, as does fn + arrow right.

i noticed 90dpi is actually really nice. but you have to set system fonts to huge to make up for pixelation in various apps like mms.apk
this is actually insanely awesome. can't wait till moto gives us a stable ics with webtop 3 to make it even better. not being able to use netflix and hulu is a little depressing.

I have been using paranoid android 2.00 and it works ok with the lapdock. I use dolphin as my regular browser but have set the standard android browser to 120dpi tablet mode. On docking the phone I long press the power button and turn on expanded desktop mode (which hides the status bar) and fire up the Android browser where I get a decent tablet experience without having to reboot.
Unfortunately, things aren't quite as stable as the stock webtop and the resolution is a big problem which I fear won't be fixed until Motorola give us ICS. The big problem for me with this setup is I get hand strain fling scrolling through Web pages, with webtop I used a firebox add on called scrollbar anywhere, where I could hold the right mouse button and move the cursor to scroll.
My plan is to set up a multi boot between paranoid android and notatchtrix so I can reboot to a good, ubuntuified webtop and back to jelly bean for every day use giving me the best of both worlds.

Wow, this is great feedback and info regarding setting DPI per app and expanded desktop mode features that Paranoid has. For scrolling, mouse wheel is supported, but it seems that Android touch pad does not include two finger scrolling.
It sounds like I need to have a look at Paranoid (or OAKP). Last time I checked, there wasn't the a recent resync with cm, which is a nice part about epinter's rom. I would be interested to know if on Paranoid, there are built in capabilities to turn off the LCD while using hdmi. It's only in the last day that I discovered a method that works, and a more integrated hdmi aware build of JB would be a really nice thing to move onto.

1. Do I have to use BlinkFeed? Can I uninstall it?
You absolutely do not have to use it if you don't want to. Just don't add any feeds to it, and it won't do anything. You might be able to hack it out of there, but we wouldn't bother. Just thumb over to the home screen and pretend that BlinkFeed never happened.
(Though we'd recommend giving it a shot. It's not bad.)
2. Wait - there's only one home screen? Can I add more?
Sure! By default there's only one. (Most people don't use more than that anyway.) But you can add as many as five home screen panels. Get to the "Customize home screen" section -- either from the "Personalize" section of the settings or by long-pressing a blank area on a home screen -- and then hit the "add panel" button.
You can then choose which home screen panel to set as the default when you hit the home button, or you can remove unwanted panels.
3. That app drawer seems a little funny. What's up with it?
First off, you're probably not used to seeing a clock and weather widget stuck to the top of the app drawer. But there it is. Start thumbing down and it'll disappear. The next odd thing is that apps are in a large, 3-by-4 configuration. (It'll look like 3-by-3 until you scroll down and get the clock widget to disappear.)
Also: Folders! Just below the clock widget is a line of icons. On the far left is the app drawer view -- you have "Custom," "Alphabetical" or "Most recent." When in custom view, you can drop apps on one another to create folders. If something obvious appears to be missing, change to alphabetical view and find it that way. Also note that if an app is docked at the bottom of the screen, it won't appear in the app drawer.
This all takes a little getting used to.
4. What does the HTC button on the bottom of the phone do?
Not a damn thing, because it's just a logo. Not a button.
5. So how do I get to the list of recent apps? (aka multitasking)
Double-tap the home button and you'll get a 3-by-3 grid of apps that are open. To close an app, just flick it upward with your finger.
6. And what about Google Now?
Hold down the home button on the HTC One to get to Google Now.
7. I miss that iconic HTC clock widget. Can I get it back?
Yep! It's available as a home screen widget. It looks like you have to have the new, sleek widget everywhere else, though.
8. Is there a notification light?
Sure is. It's hidden in the bottom row, on the third hole from the left, in the top speaker.
9. Can I customize the lock screen?
Just like in previous versions of Sense, you can choose whether to have a wallpaper displayed, a "productivity" scheme with notifications and calendar reminders, a photo album view or music player, or you can opt to go with no lock screen at all.
The application shortcuts are slaved to whatever apps you have docked to the bottom of the screens.
10. Are the speakers that good?
For a smartphone, yeah. They're about as good as anything we've used. You'll need to have Beats Audio turned on (and it is by default) to get the full effect. It's not that it'll replace a proper external speaker, but neither will you be embarrassed to play audio out of your phone.

So, do you (or anyone) by any chance know if the place where the HTC logo located is a "touch screen" area but it's just not mapped to do anything? Or, is it literally not part of the capacitive touch area?
If it is part of the capacitive area, then, do you think it would be possible to somehow configure the area where the logo is located to do something (like multi task)?

I already did it, but nobody replied to me.

For me a good info for blinkfeed was:
if you unset blinkfeed as default homescreen, then you cant go to top by pressing any buttons.
Just hit the statusbar and blinktfeed jumps to top.

I have a question I could not find an answer for, but maybe I am simply too stupid. I am a proud owner of an HTC One since Friday and though this is my fourth HTC device with Sense UI, I am seriously struggling with the four quick launch icons on the bottom (i.e. Phone, SMS, Internet, Camera). On all previous devices I could easily change these icons through drag and drop, but this new beauty is resisting that. I can neither drag a new icon in there, nor can I drag one out, thus deleting it from the list.
I can rearrange them, though...
Anybody and smart ideas?

Did you try doing it while on the 'normal' homescreen? (Not the BlinkFeed one, but the other one)

Yes, tried it all, walked through all the menues as well, no chance. You can drag the icons onto a home screen, but that will copy them, not move them. And if you try to drag an icon from the home screen to the icon bar on the bottom, once you long-press an icon, the icon bar disappears... weird...

no, there is not. You need to flip each tile (app) away to close it.

Either way, swiping away each tile does nothing. You haven't actually killed the program. The only thing it will do is soothe your OCD.

App idea: Alt+Tab style, single click switch to previous app. Exist already?

Pick the ebay app and it loads. After pasting the title there, double tap home again and instantly, it flips back to Evernote where I can repeat this process with the description and other fields. Maybe the volume key could flip between the two apps, or better yet, a swipe.
Seeing how I use that technique a million times a day, it would save countless hours over all the other task manager types that always load a display of all (or none) of the recent apps when triggered. I don't know about everybody else, but there's a 90% chance that if I want to quickly flip to another app, it's because I intend to quickly flip right back in a few seconds.
This is such a vital function for me on computers that I dedicate a whole button on my mouse to pressing Alt+Tab so I can flip back and forth very fast. I have become very spoiled by that technique and can't stand doing work on Android just because of its annoyingly slow and painful "task manager" if you can even call it that. TIA!

I am sorry, but you cannot override the home button.
You could try one of the various side bar apps though.

It could be a swipe gesture or anything that requires only ONE step. I don't want to bring up an app selection list on every switch, but just the first time. Maybe a notification bar button could bring up the selector, then a side swipe gesture could flip back and forth between the two apps? It should be simple to write this. I just cant believe that it hasn't already been done? Surely someone knows of an existing app?

The problem is that the part of the screen which will be "swipeable" will not react to touch events anymore.

Yeah. But it could be a small invisible hotzone like many of the task managers do. Swiping is just for the cool factor really. Using the volume button should work just fine for my needs. Would that work? The volume button can still listen to an app thats not in focus because music players do it right? But i guess that would be a problem if one of the switched apps overrides the volume control...? Any suggestions? If nobody has pointed out an existing app with this capability I will start on it tonight. I'm still a newb to Android but, I am majoring in programming so I gotta jump in on something!

if I understand correctly you just want to have multitasking without having to hit the multitask button and then choose the app; you just want to be able to choose the app. I would say something like floating folders would work for you.

So i noticed there are many users coming from a galaxy device, and there are i think more features than most of us know when it comes to this device, everyone just post a tip you think someone might now know:
I'll start with mine: If you click and hold the multitask button, it will bring down the settings menu, this can be used pretty much anywhere, even in the homescreen.
Also if you open an app using qslide you can move the app all the way to the left edge of the screen and it will turn into a button which can be pressed and brought up at anytime.

U can slide the Qslide to either edge. Works same ways for both the sides.

Editing the notification panel (scroll the icons on the top all the way to the right), will also let you collapse the volume and brightness sliders giving the notification panel more space...

I just upgraded from a well-loved GS3 (it was getting flaky though) and I miss having built-in widgets for controlling bluetooth or wifi on/off that you can put on your main screens (Samsung had the power bar - which had a bunch of stuff). I'd rather not use the HD widgets if I don't have to - and pulling down the menu bar isn't always convenient.

You can create your own powerbar where you can toggle wifi on/off bluetooth etc.. infact, i think i'm downloading this myself now that you reminded me of it, it is indeed more convenient.

When you scroll from bottom to open the qhickmemo+
Press the brow arrows that appear in the top after you'll be able to select an area to capture it
Also in the gallery, you can make a collage photos, hide photos and videos so no more need for hiding picture apps
In the home screen pinch to zoom it'll hide everything

Ohh, that's actually a nice low-impact widget.. Thanks! The HD widgets (while pretty) were very resource intensive and flaky sometimes for me. Too much for a widget.
