HTC One: Ten frequently asked questions - One (M7) General

http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-one-ten-frequently-asked-questions
1. Do I have to use BlinkFeed? Can I uninstall it?
You absolutely do not have to use it if you don't want to. Just don't add any feeds to it, and it won't do anything. You might be able to hack it out of there, but we wouldn't bother. Just thumb over to the home screen and pretend that BlinkFeed never happened.
(Though we'd recommend giving it a shot. It's not bad.)
2. Wait - there's only one home screen? Can I add more?
Sure! By default there's only one. (Most people don't use more than that anyway.) But you can add as many as five home screen panels. Get to the "Customize home screen" section -- either from the "Personalize" section of the settings or by long-pressing a blank area on a home screen -- and then hit the "add panel" button.
You can then choose which home screen panel to set as the default when you hit the home button, or you can remove unwanted panels.
3. That app drawer seems a little funny. What's up with it?
First off, you're probably not used to seeing a clock and weather widget stuck to the top of the app drawer. But there it is. Start thumbing down and it'll disappear. The next odd thing is that apps are in a large, 3-by-4 configuration. (It'll look like 3-by-3 until you scroll down and get the clock widget to disappear.)
Also: Folders! Just below the clock widget is a line of icons. On the far left is the app drawer view -- you have "Custom," "Alphabetical" or "Most recent." When in custom view, you can drop apps on one another to create folders. If something obvious appears to be missing, change to alphabetical view and find it that way. Also note that if an app is docked at the bottom of the screen, it won't appear in the app drawer.
This all takes a little getting used to.
4. What does the HTC button on the bottom of the phone do?
Not a damn thing, because it's just a logo. Not a button.
5. So how do I get to the list of recent apps? (aka multitasking)
Double-tap the home button and you'll get a 3-by-3 grid of apps that are open. To close an app, just flick it upward with your finger.
6. And what about Google Now?
Hold down the home button on the HTC One to get to Google Now.
7. I miss that iconic HTC clock widget. Can I get it back?
Yep! It's available as a home screen widget. It looks like you have to have the new, sleek widget everywhere else, though.
8. Is there a notification light?
Sure is. It's hidden in the bottom row, on the third hole from the left, in the top speaker.
9. Can I customize the lock screen?
Just like in previous versions of Sense, you can choose whether to have a wallpaper displayed, a "productivity" scheme with notifications and calendar reminders, a photo album view or music player, or you can opt to go with no lock screen at all.
The application shortcuts are slaved to whatever apps you have docked to the bottom of the screens.
10. Are the speakers that good?
For a smartphone, yeah. They're about as good as anything we've used. You'll need to have Beats Audio turned on (and it is by default) to get the full effect. It's not that it'll replace a proper external speaker, but neither will you be embarrassed to play audio out of your phone.

Why? Whe you can just swipe to your left and make the next screen your home screen.
I think this post should be stickied.

Why do people want to not have it at all? The desire for some to reduce clutter shouldn't be taken lightly.

So, do you (or anyone) by any chance know if the place where the HTC logo located is a "touch screen" area but it's just not mapped to do anything? Or, is it literally not part of the capacitive touch area?
If it is part of the capacitive area, then, do you think it would be possible to somehow configure the area where the logo is located to do something (like multi task)?

this should be a sticky. it will probably stop the creation of unnecessary threads

The HTC logo is nothing more then a logo unfortunately.

Ask some moderators to do it, please.
I already did it, but nobody replied to me.

For me a good info for blinkfeed was:
if you unset blinkfeed as default homescreen, then you cant go to top by pressing any buttons.
Just hit the statusbar and blinktfeed jumps to top.

I second that. Nice work OP :good:

changing quick link icons??
This is a very helpful thread, thank you for that!
I have a question I could not find an answer for, but maybe I am simply too stupid. I am a proud owner of an HTC One since Friday and though this is my fourth HTC device with Sense UI, I am seriously struggling with the four quick launch icons on the bottom (i.e. Phone, SMS, Internet, Camera). On all previous devices I could easily change these icons through drag and drop, but this new beauty is resisting that. I can neither drag a new icon in there, nor can I drag one out, thus deleting it from the list.
I can rearrange them, though...
Anybody and smart ideas?

Did you try doing it while on the 'normal' homescreen? (Not the BlinkFeed one, but the other one)

Yes, tried it all, walked through all the menues as well, no chance. You can drag the icons onto a home screen, but that will copy them, not move them. And if you try to drag an icon from the home screen to the icon bar on the bottom, once you long-press an icon, the icon bar disappears... weird...

Strange, did you try to find a solution in hands-on videos on YouTube?

did not see anything, but if you have a link or an idea, I am happy to listen...

I'll try it, no results guaranteed though

In multitasking view (where you double tap home button), is there a kill-all function like in CM10?

I didn't see any such option in any of the videos
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using Tapatalk 2

no, there is not. You need to flip each tile (app) away to close it.

Either way, swiping away each tile does nothing. You haven't actually killed the program. The only thing it will do is soothe your OCD.

Moving icons between screens

How do I move app icons fron one screen to another?
Same question for the google search and clock? How do I move those to another screen. (among the three that are available)?
hold down an icon for a few seconds and then just drag it to another screen
when I hold down on an icon on one screen, I can move it around, but it only allows me to place it on one screen.
When the "move icon" option is on (by holding an icon) I can't switch screens (by swiping finger across screen), since I'm holding the finger on the icon.
What am I doing wrong?
It seems really sensitive, my best results are when I hold the icon down about half way down the screen on the edge of the side I want to move the icon to and wait a second or two.
Myself, I found it easier to delete the icon and recreate it. This is something I think google needs to polish a bit.

Yah, I figured that out (deleting and recreating), but it seems kinda clumsy.
Ok.
Got the hang of it... You really have to get to the edge of the screen for this to work...

Three more sub-Homescreens on my Hero!!! YEP, count-um TEN Homescreens!

Do you want an additional 'THREE' customizable homescreens on your Hero? Well, there's an 'app' for that! HA!
First, I'm not sure if doing this has any bugs or inherent problems, and I am not responsible for any problems you may encounter doing this! BUT, I haven't experienced any so far myself.
Anyway, I stumbled onto this by using the Home Switcher app. When I saw how it launched the original Android Home app, that gave me an IDEA.
Using an application called 'Bar Control', I setup a Taskbar ICON to launch the native Android 'Home' application which, if you ask me, 'extends' the Hero with an additional three homescreens. I simply pull down the Taskbar and tap Home to launch the original Android Home app which gives me access to three more homescreens. AND, a simple tap of the Home button takes me back to HTC Sense.
So, I now have TEN (10) homescreens!!!!! These additional native Android homescreens are where I put some Android widgets (non HTC Sense widgets of course). And get this, the two Sprint widgets, NFL Mobile Live and Sprint TV, are available too! The Hero uses the same Wallpaper for both HTC Sense and Home, but it unlocks the native Android wallpaper gallery too.
Steps I did:
1. Downloaded Bar Control from the Market.
2. Launched Bar Control and waited for it to scan all the programs.
3. Scrolled down to the app called, 'Home' and selected it.
4. Selected an ICON of choice. (I used the same home ICON)
5. Pulled down my Notification Bar, tapped 'Home, and WALLA!
Simply hit the Home button to return to HTC Sense.
Note: To get rid of this Home ICON in the Notification Bar, simply perform the first three steps above again which will remove it.
OK, now can anyone tell me of a simple shortcut app that can be set to launch the native Android Home app without having to go through the Taskbar via the Bar Control app in my example above?
So, I believe this is the GREATEST HERO HACK so far!
When two unused screens just aren't enough lol, nice find.
Not really an hack if you ask me... why don't you install a few extra homescreen replacement apps (like openhome) so you'll even have more homescreens
this is not a hack at all. installing apps and using them as intended is as far away from a hack as could be. please change the title, this is so lame...
btw, i would love to have my homescreens scrolling "round", meaning if i swipe screen #7 (the most right one) to the left i want to go to screen #1 (the most left one). anybody know if this is possible?

I would like to know this as well, I sort of wonder why htc didn't design it like that.

Sorry, couldn't resist - to me, it's like fingernails on a black board!

Dave
lol, the same happens when you install any theme app such as open home, dxtop, etc...
What happens is, the default for the home button is cleared of it's default (HTC Sense) giving you the option which home screen you want to fire up after holding down the home button.
You could probably just clear the default yourself in App settings, limiting the need for another app all together.
Downloading a home screen app equals hacking your phone?
give him a Break it was his first post.He was over zealous on his find..LOL
well atleast he let us know about his find.sum peeps probably wouldnt had even shared..thx DaWeav
Yup, just to elaborate on what N0J mentioned:
menu/settings/applications/manage applications/HTC Sense
tap "Clear defaults"
Now, every time you push your "Home" button you will be presented with the options "Home" and "HTC Sense." As long as you don't check the default box you will always have a two-touch access to either interface.
Alternatively, for those that prefer vanilla Android to Sense, check the default box and hit "Home." Your phone will no longer load the Sense UI. This can be reversed by going to Home in manage applications (above) and again clearing defaults.

Well said and thanks for the detailing the steps out for me!
Dang. I thought this was actually going to be some useful information that could lead me to getting rid of the 4 unused homescreens
This isn't a hack and not much of a discovery but if it makes you happy...
Would be kind of cool if Sense had 10 screens of its own.
nice find! But yes, 7 home screens is a little much. until we find some better widgets.

GDE Home Screen does this
edit: by the way this is a dumb "hack"
I'm assuming this works for vanilla android as well? One of the most annoying things about my Moment that my Hero does is only having 3 screens.
Does anyone know how to REMOVE any of the homescreens from sense?
My hero is so slow!
I really hope that as part of an update to Sense that they make it so you can have any number of screens so long as it's 2X+1. (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11)
Personally, I only really use 5, so I would just drop the last 2 screens and have the little indicator get a tiny bit larger.

How to drag something from the homescreen

I should have put a '?' in the title, but I can't edit it.
I want to drag something from the middle homescreen to one of the side screens but don't have any luck.
Any tips?

Try dragging it to the very edge and holding it there.
or if that doesn't work (mine is very picky at times). Delete the short cut from the middle screen. Slide to the screen you want it on, open the app drawer, select and drop on the screen.

It worked, thanks. Just found out I have 5 home screens on Super-D.
I've also noticed that if I can't drag an icon or widget to another screen in portrait mode, I am usually successful by switching to landscape mode. For some reason it makes moving icons and widgets a lot easier.

I don't know how to look for this on here..HTC sense quicklinks?

After installing the update from TMO, The little bar that flips between mail, home, internet, images, music, etc. "shrinks" into a little black tab in the middle of my screen at the bottom.
This is super super annoying because it takes an extra effort to click on the damn thing and then slide my finger to scroll. This also requires a second tap on the screen when i go to browser because the first one simply 'collapses' the little thing and the second one will actually respond to the internet icon you're tapping on.
Tell me there's a way to turn off the collapse of this stupid thing. I tried looking on here but I don't know what keywords to use to search this out. Something like 'htc sense update hd2 registry change' yields nothing.
TIA

It sounds to me like you have cookies home tab enabled?! That is strange are you sure you didn't flash to a custom rom?! I have that one my phone and I have the update but the only way I was able to get that was with CHT. I have attached examples.
Yep! I do have cookies home tab installed! Dang..so is the setting in that to change it? :bangs head:
I'll take a look.
WTHAT A MORON. Thats its. The 'retractable slider' setting. I can't believe I didn't realize that was cookie and not HTC.
Thanks a million for pushing me in the right direction.
Awesome! Glad I could help! I had that enable for a while but it became a little annoying so I took it off! Hahahaha it does make it look really cool!
Hey, thanks for the info. I'm glad I learned about that.
I also have Cookies, and didn't know about that.
Now I have just enabled that feature. Why? I don't find that "ribbon" at the bottom very useful, as it is not very customizable. Nice to have the settings button there at the right, but one can also do that with a Quick Link. I like the music app, but one can also do a quick link for that. Withouth that ribbon, there is room for another row of quick links. (I find it unfortunate that that "ribbon" is so uncustomizable. You cannot choose what is in it, but only what to remove (other than settings and home). (I don't really need that home icon either, because there is a hardware button for home.) I don't like how that "People" tab goes to "HTC People". I'd rather go straight to the regular contacts list. But it can't be changed (AFAIK), only removed.
So by retracting it, I remove the whole thing (can slide it back if I want), but can put the links I like in that ribbon into quick links, for which there is now more room.
Thank you.

How do I change right hand dock "phone" to "wifi"?

Sorry for this one, I have had a quick search...
On the right hand side, the small dock that shows Browser, Apps and Phone.. how can I change this, on the stock rom I had, the phone was wifi, which was much more useful, given that the advent doesnt have native phone hardware!
It depends a little bit on the launcher you are running, but on most, if you press and hold an icon, even in the dock, you can 'bin' it and drag a new icon into its place from the desktop.
Cant tell which launcher it is, currently using Corvus5 rom, but even the Modaco rom had the same launcher... but Corvus5 has Phone (for some reason), rather than Wifi, and I would like to change it....
Holding down the icon doesnt do anything other than launch the app when you release it...
Cheers
I think that is the ADW or the VTL Launcher (both quite similar). Does anything happen if you hold and drag the icon off the dock position?
Nothing happens, you cant do anything other than press them... and the app launches when you take your finger off...
I haven't got my Vega with me at the moment so can't check till later. I guess it may be worth a look in the Launcher settings. I recall these are not obvious to get to. At the desktop, hit the menu button and then go to Settings or Advanced and I think you find Launcher settings somewhere around there.
I have the same problem.
The icon is not part of the normal launcher bit, its the small tool bar on the right hand side that also has the browser and app button so you cant select it and drag it into the bin.
I wish there was a way to remove the phone parts of the corvus rom... i think i need to do some reading
Ok so I got mine sorted, long press on the phone symbol, select edit then wifi setup. I'm using awn, so hopefully helps someone else.
I dont know why i never remember to long press stuff... haha
Thanks for the tip dude!
Does anyone know how to make the tile spaces smaller on the home screens to get more icons on the screen? i can only fit 4 icons across the screen, loads of wasted space
A number of the Launchers have configuration options for number of icon rows and columns. At the Home screen access the Menu and then see if you have some Launcher options accessible under the More button.
