Just picked up my epic this weekend. Very happy so far. Unfortunately somehow my virtual keyboard is non responsive. It pops up as it should whenever entering text input mode while in profile view.... however if I try to use it as swype or hunt and peck its like I am not touching the. Screen at all. Therefore I am forced to use. The hardware keyboard for text entry.
I figure this must be operator error because the touch screen works great for everything else. Hopefully someone can give me a clue on what I did wrong..... thanks.
Mine does this alot if the screen ia dirty.

Anyone else have issues with their Delete key? It seems I have to hit it twice to get it moving. I can type very fast and smooth with easy button presses, but the delete key seems to be a PITA.

Don't have any problems here with any keys (that I've found so far). Is it a case of since its a little more difficult to get to (upper right) corner that you don't realize you are not pressing it the same way as the other keys?
Just a thought.
No problems here
Never had that problem.

Hard keyboard or virtual? I haven't had that issue with either. Off topic, but my spacebar on the landscape virtual is a pain, I always end up hitting the b or v.

If you're not using a custom keyboard, have you tried calibrating your keyboard at:
Menu-->Settings-->Language&Keyboard-->Touch Input-->Text Input-->Calibration Tool
(Interestingly enough, Calibration tool is only available if you hold the phone in Portrait and not in Landscape)
Yeah, that was the first thing I tried. I'm going to try it again. Coming from the Hero and having the tight sliding due to my case, its going to be hard to get used a the hard keyboard again. It is weird that the calibration only works in portrait or w/e you call it, the Hero was the same way.

i think it might be that I'm just not hittin it right. I was typing last night and when I hit delete it worked right away. I just might be hittin it off center.
Sometimes when I'm using gesture typing, it won't recognize that I'm doing a gesture and won't create the blue trail to indicate the gesture type. It will just type the letter that the swype started on. It's really frustrating. Is this a known issue? Has this happened to anyone else?
It happens sometimes... But I think it's because it takes a little bit to recognise the touch, just keep pressing a bit more before moving your finger. It will get "fixed" I'm sure.

Since the lower software keys bar takes up a lot of the screen space (making this a 4.8" device, instead of 5.2", for most practices), I was wondering how people handle this. There is an option to "auto hide" the key bar (by 3rd party app), but then I wonder how much productivity are we going to miss (by having to tap twice in order to press "BACK", instead of once). Another possibility is to use gesture control to entirely replace that key bar, but the problem with that (at least with my Galaxy S2) is that sometimes it work, and sometimes it doesn't work, I can't make it reliable.
How do you handle it with your G2 ?
Download the auto hide soft keys app & see for yourself. Its not bad.
PIE ? Try it using the LMT Launcher.

I did it. When I use a "tap" for trigger, I find it very easy to access, but I also find myself sometimes accidentally launching it...
When I use "swipe" for trigger, it will not launch by mistake, but it is also much slower to launch...
I wish there was a way to keep the original key bar, but just make it smaller. If the height would have been half, or even third of what it is now, it would still be very easy to operate. I don't understand why it was programmed for pig fingers.
I used a mod to make the nav buttons "Tiny". So now I have a 5" screen and I'm good with that.
Can you please tell us how you did this?

I don't think it works on T-Mobile
+1 for the tiny mod
I played some more with "GMD Gesture Control", and I have to say it's starting to look more promising...
I've created the following gestures:
Down-Right (anywhere on the screen) = HOME (just to clarify the gesture: I swipe down, then immediately right)
Left-Down (anywhere on the screen) = Back
Up-Right (anywhere on the screen) = Menu
Right-Down (anywhere on the screen) = Recent apps
I find this much more comfortable than even my Galaxy S2 hardware buttons...(since the hardware buttons are at the bottom of the device, but the gesture work everywhere on the screen).
The possible problems of this approach:
1. It might interfere with other screen swipes (though apart from games, I had no interference as of yet).
2. I have no clue what this does (if at all) to battery life...

Ok, upon some more testing, I did find interference using these gestures, especially when browsing internet (you tend to unintentionally make these gestures when panning windows).
So I've added another "security layer", and the gestures look like this now:
Down-Right-Up (anywhere on the screen) = HOME (just to clarify the gesture: I swipe down, then right, then up)
Left-Down-Right (anywhere on the screen) = Back
Up-Right-Down (anywhere on the screen) = Menu
Right-Down-Left (anywhere on the screen) = Recent apps
So far, so good...

Do u need to be rooted for this?
LMT requires root, as does auto hide soft keys. If you're going to root anyway, I'd recommend using the qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 build.prop edit to hide them, however, as it doesn't require another service to be running.
---------- Post added at 05:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:14 PM ----------
And I can't recommend LMT enough. So powerful/flexible.
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 build.prop
where can i get that?
It's just a line you add to your build.prop file. It makes the OS think you have hardware nav keys
Yes, it's a bit of a problem that both Auto hide and gesture control requires root.
I'm going to enter a 24 months contract on the G2, and so I really want to keep those 24 months of warranty...
If I root, have a problem, then un-root, will I get warranty ?

The manufacturer's warranty is only for one year or if you have your carrier's insurance then it doesn't really matter if its rooted cuz I've never had issues returning rooted phones to the carriers insurance.

Does this mean that the soft keys will be hidden but the screen will still register the space supposedly occupied by the buttons like invisible but functional buttons? That would be awesome.

I did it a couple hours ago.
The screen does not register them at all. Your OS now thinks you have full 1920x1080 to use instead of stock 1778x1080 or whatever it is. The buildprop method is the BEST. First off you don't have to pay for any pro app crap, and also there is no other apps running - it is just a mod that you can undo.
LMT + prop tweak = perfect phone for me.
I don't like the hardkey. It feels different to press than a softkey. It takes longer to press and takes me out of my rythm. Therefore I tend not to use it as much (have built some alternate shortcut gestures into my launcher and my Notification Toggle setup).
Also from what I have seen softkeys last longer than hardkeys... the softkeys have no mechanical parts to wear out.
The whole thing bugs me, but I think I'd feel better if I understood WHY this design decision was made...
So can anyone explain the ADVANTAGES of having a hardkey home button?

I prefer a hard key for the exact opposite of what you said.
BTW, why do you own a S4 ???
The day I cant buy an Android phone with a real home button will be the day Ill switch to something else.
Switching from the straight talk galaxy S2 to the S4 took me a bit to get use to as the S2 didn't have a hard key.... but I like the hard key better.... I think its more of a personal preference than anything

I miss the HTC Amaze.. Power, camera, and volume were the only buttons on the phone.
I miss the smooth glass home button at the bottom of the screen between the menu and back buttons
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
Softkey takes screen real estate, but, will relocate landscape to portrait. When a major crash occurs softkey will not work. Softkey is more suscptable to accidental presses.
Hardkey has a completely different tactile feel.
This is one of many reasons why I prefer Samsung to Nexus. Each to their own.

I love being able to wake the screen with the menu button. This is much easier when using a case.

First of all, welcome to the late party.
Second, I hated the hard key also.
Now though, I love the fact that I can "feel" the key without looking for it.
Guess I'd rather have a capacitive key still, but it would need to be a raised button that I can "feel".

It's amazing how there is no one feature that can please everyone.
I actually have that option disabled on my phone.
Drives me nuts because everytime I pick up my phone, I'd accidentally press that button and the phone would turn on. Or when I wipe down my screen, I'd hit that button and with the next wipe, I'd unlock my phone and inadvertently open an app or something. hahah

Unfortunately, that's about 90% of the threads in this particular forum now.
My bad. I'm new to S4. I didn't search but got the whim to express some frustration in what I thought would be a light-hearted conversational thread. Not the best decision in retrospect. Next time I'll do that on the Off-topic Cafe thread when I get that urge.
I think a big plus of using both a hard key and the touch sensitive keys (I really dislike the soft keys taking screen real estate, if they disappeared for full screen applications, I'd be more supportive – but I digress) is just being able to feel where the touch sensitive keys are without having to look at the phone. Long live the hard key
