Problem with N4...could use some help... - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so its hard to explain but basically the screen response on my phone is really messed up. When I do normal touches it is fine, but when I swipe, like swiping down the notification bar or scrolling a web page, it is almost completely un-responsive. I turned on "show touches" in dev options and what I see is when I am swiping or scrolling the touch point does not move but what happens is 2 touch points are created one where I start the swipe and one where I end it. (Lift my finger) It has made my phone almost useless. If anyone has experienced this problem and has a fix please let me know, if not I am just gonna order a replacement. If it makes any difference I have the first model Nexus 4.

Have you tried reflashing the 4.2.2 factory image in fastboot to see if that helps or solves the issue?

^This. If it doesn't work even then try a custom kernel or one of the touch fixes around. If none of that works, it's RMA time.

[Q] Touch detected incorrectly right after power on

This has been happening since I remember getting the device. About 3/5 times when I bring my device out of standby and I go to enter my pattern the touch is off. I have "show touches" enabled in developer options to verify this.
When I put my finger on the top left dot of the 3X3 pattern, which is around the middle-left of the screen, it is detecting that I'm touching the device all the way in the top left corner. If I drag my finger around the screen, the touch is offset. If I remove my finger from the screen and place it back on the screen, then it is properly detected.
I didn't run on stock for very long, maybe an hour or two, before I rooted and flashed AOKP. Right now I'm on WhiteHawkx's unnoficial AOKP nightly and Franco's Kernel (r122).
My plan is to flash back to stock and see if it still happens then. But currently I have a really busy week ahead and don't have time so looking for insight.
Anyone else experience something like this?
No one? So I guess I should call Google for a warranty exchange?

Try recalibrating the touch screen, I think there's an option in settings.

I posted in that thread a while ago about this issue and no one confirmed. Thanks for your reply. I'm going to go back to stock this weekend and run it for a couple days to verify.

Let me know your results. If it persists, I might have to send mine back.
I'm on stock ROM. I have this issue too, when I power on and drag to unlock, I get a delayed mismatched response. I have to power off then back on again.
It started this recently, so might be app related.

Turn on " show touches" in developer options to help verify if you the save thing happening.
I don't have to reboot mine but I have to lift finger of screen and put back on to get it to properly detect where the touch should be.

So just as a follow up I reverted to stock for 5 days and didn't see this issue. Flashed back to AOKP and Franco kernel and now it's happening randomly when I go to hang up a call. I tap on the red hang up bar and it detects the touch in the top left corner.
I called Google play support but since I didn't buy my device from them they directed me to lg.
I'm starting to think it's my screen protector.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
lol, I had insensitivity issues on the bottom of the screen way back, I use a displayed pin pad on lockscreen so I just tap a certain spot to unlock, I sometimes wonder why the digitizer register incorrectly.
flashing a different kernel helped, I'm using motleys.
Have had this problem since launch, im on stock rooted, maybe its a certain app?
If anyone wants to compare their apps with me to find a similar problem, shoot me a pm

Screen defect [left side]

If you are one of few people with a nexus 4 where the very left centimeter of the screen (top to bottom) does not respond, you need to RMA. At first it wasn't a big deal to me, but after using swype from the playstore, the letter Q was unusable. I thought it was just a screen alignment issue, but it is an issue with the phone itself. It can be shown using pointer touches in developer options. This is a picture of how far I was able to go to the left edge before response quit. This video shows what the issue is compared to a regular nexus 4.

Anyone else sometimes experience touches not registering on the touchscreen?

Randomly it seems, when I tap on the touchscreen on my new N7 2013, nothing happens, and I have to repeat the process several times before my touches are registered.
Does anyone else have this problem?

See my thread titled " Another touch issue, with reproducible steps".
Go into developer options and enable "Show touches" and "Pointer location"
If you see your touches registering but the app isn't responding, it is probably a problem with the app. If you see random stuff on the screen, probably a problem with the digitizer or digitizer in combination with the driver/software in this release.
Ive experienced this a few times and it seems to be a software /hardware interface issue with particular custom rom builds ive installed. I know the touchscreen hardware itself was fine when I forced reboot into recovery and the touchscreen worked as normal in custom recovery.

I wouldn't. If you had a Verizon Galaxy Nexus when it came out, you'll remember that it had the same issue with certain points on the screen (lower right hand corner) when using multi-touch applications. The entire screen would either stop seeing input or start going erratic and creating faulty inputs that weren't happening. It isn't a hardware issue, proven by some users experiencing it and some not. The only time I've experienced it is in the Netflix application while trying to choose a show to watch. I re-boot the application and viola, no more issue. Some in this thread even are stating that they only see the problem sometimes after getting the 4.3 update.
In short, it's software and not hardware.
Same issue when not touching with both hands somehow (like if the tablet is flat on a table).

Haven't had a problem with mine. I just got it today, and it's worked like a charm. I bought mine from Gamestop if that helps any.

Bottom screen not responding well

So I have this weird issue. The very bottom of my screen does not respond well! At first I thought it was a bug with the navigation bar, tried several roms and tried PIE controls until I figured that there is something wrong. I have the navbar now set at 48 dpi and I have to press at middle of it to work, where the very bottom is dead. I activated 360 rotation so that my statusbar now is at the bottom of the screen instead of navbar and it does not respond at all! Anyone can explain ?

I have Tried like lots of different roms with clean fresh installation and the problem is still there ! I think its a hardware problem. For ezample right now if I set my navbar to 32 dpi it wont respond at all because the bottom of my screen have lost the touch sensitivity. I have droppes my phone several times, could that be it ? I cant really remember when I exactly started noticing the issue...but just few days ago...I have tried PIE and same **** :s I have to set the trigger area to max for it to respond...and yes im talking about experiments after a clean install before installing ANY third party app

Think Im gonna give no damn about it and of course buy the nexus 5, which I would have done either way..but im surprised how can a touchscreen lose a part of its sensitivity somewhere on the screen ?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
If you look closely at your screen at an angle with the screen off you will be able to see the digitizer matrix that is fused to the screen.
It is a series of squares.
Each of them squares has 3 horizontal lines and one vertical.
Behind the bezel there will be the circuitry that connects every horizontal and vertical line
If say for instance after one of your phone drops it has damaged one of the connectors at the side, you will lose the entire row of touch detection. Which is probably what has happened

Alex is right i had this happen to my moto defy. I'd say get it done under warrnty no matter if youre keeping or selling. Improve your resale value and protect you from having the entire digitizer die on you

Try this:
1. Go to Settings > About Phone > Android version 4.4.3 and tap on this several times until easter egg appears; this will hide your navigation bar
2. Then swipe from the bottom and see if the navigation bar is working

Sounds ridiculous but I'd try flashing 4.2.2 factory image too. You never know..
I dirty flashed 4.4.3 flashable zip file from N5 port ROM and I faced similar issue, no nav bar and no status bar like immersive mode.
I retried with wipe data/factory reset, clean cache and dalvik cache solved the issue.

Digitizer issue, my friend. I hate to break it to you, but unless you can afford to spend on a new display unit, you will have a tough time using this phone. I have the same issue, and the best cost estimate I can get for the replacement is INR 5500 (around USD 100).
This is what happens when the digitizer and front glass are fused The whole damn unit has to be replaced even though the glass is totally intact. :FML:

Its kinda weird though because I went into the Easter egg and started playing with the tiles where the Nav sits... Worked just fine. They moved to my touch. =\

Funny you should say that. My phone navbar seems to have started working fine too. Boy, this is strange!
(I'm serious. The navbar was totally unresponsive, and now it's working like there was never a problem)
But interesting coincidences aside: I would advise you to try flashing stock again. Not sure whether that will solve the problem, but if your digitizer is fine, there has to be a software issue. The fresh start should clear up that issue, whatever it is.
And one more thing: When you enable "Show touches" in Developer options, are you able to get touches to show up on the nav bar? If yes then reflash. If no, it is indeed a digitizer problem, and I have no idea how that Easter egg thingy is working out.
Hope this helps.
Cheers!
Almightiness so I figured out what caused this issue. I had bought a charger from the gas station not too long ago. The charger would make the phone Charging percentage Glitch so I tried it on my phone... Worked. After a while the home button would press itself and after I took it off it would stop. My friend was using it and he says his keyboard was pressing letters in different areas and he's never experienced it before.
I did the whole "show touches" In developers options and I can see that it can not recognize my touch. I glide my finger over the screen and stops on the top of the Navigation Strip. =\ fak
