Holy batman wtf happened to my data? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So apart from falling asleep while reading an article on my laptop last night and having my phone in my hand and waking up at 5am find it low on battery and plugging it in to charge, I got to work at 8am today went to a meeting from 9-11am at a supplier. At the supplier I turned on my hotspot to VPN back into my company to pull a few emails.
I can understand the hotspot use.. 100mb so quickly? Ok that's fine, but how did hangouts, Google Play store, etc explode?
I'll admit I updated a few apps these past few days: Lightflow, Foursquare, Greenify, but all that does NOT add up to that much transfer. And how the hell is Hangouts using so much data? I have an Ingress chat going on, but unless they're pasting Wikipedia articles in there, I sho uld be ok. Even if they went wild with 640x480 images, I shouldn't have that much data.
I also have Google+ Sync OFF and it greenified. WTF is going on? Pulse has its sync off. I almost want to say is it possible to have an error in reporting? I don't even believe these stats. It doesn't make sense.
My phone alerted me that I was at 2gb during my meeting and so I shut it off. This is ridiculous. May 31 - June 7 = 2gb? How the hell do I get through my billing cycle?

Clearly something went down June 7th, but even if you look at May 31 - June 6, I still cannot understand how Hangouts wastes so much data.

what rom are you using? a few of the latest commits(dalvik/skia) are causing the phone to report data usage wrong on the phone. its not reporting wrong to your provider, just to your phone. you can always check your usage with your provider(tmobile via mobile site). to fix this, delete the files in /data/system/netstats/(i believe).

Cyanogenmod also had issues in one of its latest builds. It was only an issue with calculations though, so it didn't go rogue and download half the internet for you... don't worry.

Use an app from play store to control your data usage everyday.

Thanks but it was a bug in CM. Its very unlikely that the pulse or hangouts could gobble up so much data

[Q] Seeking advice in regards with my data consumption.

Okay. So I used to have a blackberry paired with an unlimited bis before I switched to android.
I didn't subscribe to a data plan because we finally now have wifi in the house. But now, I'm kind of missing emailing/chatting on the go. Even posting sns statuses whenever I feel like it.
So I've looked at some data plans my carrier are currently offering and found the following:
8.00 USD for 300mb
16.00 USD for 1gb
And that's monthly. The unlimited data costs about 26 USD a month.
Now my dilemma.
Here's my data consumption on wifi

As you can see, I consumed 20gb in 2 weeks. Granted, minus 10gb for youtube and the podcasts, still, that's 10gb in 2 weeks.
And specially now that I don't have a job, I just can't afford that unlimited data plan. So the only option that I'm currently looking at is that 300mb a month one.
Can I survive with only just 300mb a month?
I know that this has been probably asked a thousand times before, but I don't have access to a computer right now so I'm using Tapatalk. And the search feature on this is next to useless.
I hope someone can help me with this and give advice and steps to take in order to minimize my data consumption if I ever do decide to sign up for a data plan.

Also. Can somebody tell what could android be possibly doing to consume this much data in background?
Sent from my MK16i using Tapatalk 2
The background data is for Gmail syncing and stuff I think. You'd be best turning it off and on and maybe limiting yourself to Edge/2G until you need the 3/4G so you don't use that much.
Well for the iphone, one big way of saving data is through Onavo.
It basically compresses the data on their server and then sends it over. maybe theres an android alternative

new to android need battery saving advice

hello im new to android coming over from wp8 (nokia 920) which i LOVE to death but ive been through 6 920s since launch for a few different reason. Att allowed me to get the g2 for $50 bucks and i get to keep this 920. ive read alot obout the g2s battery and i just wanted to know what i need to disable besides the usual nfc gps stuff to make my battery last longer. I had the screen on for no more than 10 minutes and my batter dropped from 95 to 87 and all i did was look around in settings and take 2 pics with no flash the screen brightness is set to 60 auto.
You have to allow it to go through about 4 charge cycles to calibrate and then your battery life will be insane.

Don't install anything or do anything. Give it a few days (after the new honeymoon phase) of normal use...you'll get it going the entire day. That drop is fine, don't worry about it.

Don't turn on the screen.... Ever... and your battery life will be amazing!
Apps can be your best friend and worst enemy. Make sure that you don't have rogue apps eatting your batter and/or apps that have a lot of sleep wake issues and don't let your phone go into deep sleep. Use battery stats apps and sleep wake apps to track down those unwanted apps

Don't use it?
But seriously. If you plan to not to use that ****ton of features LG included, you can simply root it, install Titanium Backup, and freeze those processes.
Also disabling WiFi hotspots and GPS is said to be the greatest battery saver.
I have CID off, GPS and use 2x battery app.

I assumed it was caller ID, but I can't see how that would save battery life, beside maybe freezing the bloatware app that's on the Verizon version (not sure if it's on the other versions).

phone runs very warm and short battery life?

Sup peeps,
Just picked up the note 3 yesterday.
The battery life has been pretty abysmal compared to my note 2...
1 hr of Web browsing and photo editing ran down 18%... No video or 3d rendering.
Also, the superior posterior aspect of the phone is abnormally warm with just plain use... Again, no video or 3d rendering.
Anyone else experiencing these issues?

Do you try see which app drain you battery?

Sent from my Nexus 10 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yes. First thing I did a actually. Mostly screen consumption and I am running at lowest screen brightness but not power saving. I never had to worry about these things with the note 2.
Here is my current usage after recharging again... Not as fast of drain but still bad for forum and Web browsing. Blue tooth and gps off but I am using 4g.

I use power saver mode unless I'm doing something cpu intensive but texting, web browsing, forums you don't need the full cpu power

I actually recommend going into dev options and enable cpu monitor. My note 3 was getting terrible battery because of indexing. And only found out why from the mon. removed my sd to fix it.
To enable dev options tap on the build# a few times.

Similar for me. I unplugged mine around 11am this morning and actually didnt use it at all. It sat on the table while I worked around the house. While on wifi it was down to 55% less than 4 hours later. Battery shows exchange services is killing me with over 70% usage. Coming from a note 2 i never had this issue. In fact, my note 2 was amazing with the exact same setup.
Since this is being used for work, I need to use exchange and it needs to be set to push email. Anyone else use exchange and have similar issues?
My battery is really long lasting :/

[Q] Is this normal battery drain?

Ok guys, I keep hearing people ranting and raving about this phone's battery, however I feel that mine is either faulty or everyone else is exaggerating. On a typical day, of normal usage, heavy web browsing, occasional 10 minute game session, I can get about 4 hours screen on time, and about 14 hours total time before it's dead and I need to charge. I have minimal wake-locks now that I've figured the majority of them out, and keep location services on device sensor only. My device is deep sleeping more than being awake, and will last quite a while while asleep, battery doesn't seem to abnormally drain while asleep. Every time I've been able to track it down to a wake-lock issue if it has.
It's draining very fast (it seems) while screen is on though. Wifi calling is almost always on the majority of the time.
Any ideas? Is this way off? Or is this the norm?
I've done the usual factory restores and all that, and still no improvement.
Thanks!
Example:
Are you using a custom kernel? You could try dorimanx's and heavily skew the CPU towards a lighter load
I used to get 4h on screen time for quite a while, but k realised that it was cos of 4G @ and the way I used my phone. If you read a lot and hardly launch or close anything the battery life gets better very quickly
Sent from my LG-D802
That seems about right.
On stock I get between 4 and 6 hours screen time and about 24 hours on battery. Being on WiFi rather than 3g helps a lot and turning down the screen brightness.

Gear VR Service used 30% battery since last charge?

Is this normal? How can I disable this since I never plan on using VR?

Don't see a way to uninstall updates for it. I just forced closed it and my battery seems to be hanging onto each % longer. Will be interesting to see with a full charge tomorrow.
Setup wizard is doing the same thing, what the hell.

Well that may be, but since I forced them shut I'm still at 97% battery today after almost 2 hours. Seems like it helped battery life so far. Still wish I could disable both of them.
Two words... 'Package Disabler'.
Ok, just installed that and disabled VR entirely. We'll see how that goes.
Any update?

Wtf, got my S7 Edge some days ago, i have high battery drain even when screen is off, just checked this out and i got 12% without having any vr at all. I went greenifying it
The best mobile hijacker to get robbed by today!
If you do not want to use the Gear VR and you own a Samsung SMART phone, Samsung will force you to install it. If you try to refuse, the install app will interrupt any other app running every couple of minutes. This results in constant interruptions and a fast drain of the battery. Search for Gear VR on the web and you will see this has been an ongoing issue for more than a year and Samsung is doing nothing.
I finally gave in and installed the software in order to get my phone back. All I got was access to their online store where I can buy their VR apps.
I paid $600 for the phone only to have it hijacked by Samsung and turned into their personal kiosk.
This feels so dishonest.
