Kind of overkill.
No need to change product manufacturer.
Just change the device to nookhdplus and that would do it.
Why would zinio guys blacklist Nook is beyond me, esp. since they don't blacklist e.g. Kindle.

In reality I should just change device name in my build tree, but that carries inconveniences with it, like people would need new CWM installed, I'll need to redo my build tree and so on, so just for the sake of a couple apps I don't feel the effort is justified ATM.
Meanwhile it would be interesting if people would write to the developers (well, not Nook, but say this zinio one) and ask they how come Nook is blacklisted, what are their reasons?

I read on a thread that zinio was blacklisted by Barnes and nobles due to them both selling similar products and services. My guess is that they get away with it and not with the kindle app because of how much bigger amazon is. Better to block some then none I guess.

BTW I just realized - if you change device name in build prop, you lose sound after reboot. Sigh, need to implement workaround for that.

I'm not a Zinio user but I tried this http://desk.n2acards.com/customer/p...-how-can-i-get-zinio-to-work-with-jelly-bean- and I could download the app and it seemed to work fine. I'm running CM 10.1.
Yes, editing build.prop and changing the 'ovation' silences the device.

i changed the device name to nexus 7 and didnt have a problem so it may be random
I would recommend for other users trying to edit build.prop - Just download the Build Prop Editor app. Then ONLY change "ro.product.device" from "ovation" to "nookhdplus". Then reboot. At least for me, I had to clear the cache in recovery and wait through apps updating after the reboot (otherwise it simply hung up while trying to boot). What you want should now be in the play store. The other ways stating to change more information just confused my device to all hell and led to a lot of frustration on my end. The sound issue is still present, so you need to change this back when done.

Any one else concern about this app and its permissions. It want access to pretty much every thing... Any one have any more information on this? Reading amazon review, there were others who have same concern...
I still got it, so once i have all the information on this app, and i am convince this app not going to do any thing questionable to my device without my knowledge, i will probably install it then.
The way to check the amazon apps. Turn off your wireless launch the app.if it starts looking for internet to run. RUN FROM THIS APP..
Good luck.of course this does not apply to all apps as ssome are for net stuff.

Yup, mostly i do the same. Got alot of app from amazon but havent installed them all. As for the turning off wireless, i do that alot with some apps that i dont trust completely. Also i found out while back, some app actually stored data, that goes to where ever when and if you send some crash report but not restricted to just that. I am sure its for some legit reason, but i makes me question abit more.
I know this app has ability to access Remote file so it need net access, but asking permission to access my messages and stuff. I guess its just the devil in my mind with a pitch fork, stabbing my brain and telling it to question it...

Ok, this might not actually be a deal but well, it's kind of a deal in another way.
RIM is giving away a free Blackberry Playbook for every developer who submits a worthwhile app to the Blackberry App world. You can also submit Android apps *ported* for Playbook. Well, when they say ported, they don't mean you should use the native API. You can use the Android API but you should edit the app such that it doesn't appear to be an Android app.
eg: remove links to Android market.
More information at http://devblog.blackberry.com/2012/...playbook-tablet-offer-for-android-developers/
Please read the terms since they've excluded web launchers, web browsers and static apps which server a very simple purpose!
Thats one way of building up your Market Place lol.

Yea but a lot of people would write simple apps or port open source apps just to get a Playbook. I'm also planning to submit an app but am thinking of app ideas. :/ Nothing good comes to my mind.
I'm getting one. I already ported the app. That took about 1-2 minutes. Now I have to wait for blackberry to accept my developer account. Then They have to verify my id/passport. Then I have to submit the app. Then they have to accept the app. Then they will ship it.
At least they waived the $200 dev account fee. I really don't plan on getting people to use the app. I just want a tablet. It has hdmi out, usb otg, and can run android apps. If it's free, why not?

Just learn how to make apps. Register for a Vendor account now, then make your app. The deadline is next monday. I would register now because it takes a few days for them to accept your account.
Or you can look online for open source apps and ask the dev for permission and compile it for blackberry.

I don't think that they will accept that. Look at the terms of use for the free playbook.
4. Application Criteria
4.1 Applications must provide a functionality that is considered useful to the end user, as determined by Sponsor, in its sole and absolute discretion. Applications must comply with the Guidelines and these Terms and Conditions. However, the following categories of applications are specifically excluded from eligibility for the Offer:
(a) Web launchers or shortcuts;
(b) Web browsers; and
(c) Applications that provide a simple, single function, such as playing noise or displaying a graphic.
(collectively, an “Excluded Application”).
4.2 For the purposes of the Offer, if the Sponsor feels that the number of Applications in any given category appears to be excessive, the Sponsor, in its sole and absolute discretion, reserves the right to refuse to consider any further Applications submitted in that category.

I know they are excluding simple apps but they are excluding very very simple apps that accomplish only one action. I mean, I don't see a reason why many people would port some of the simple apps in Google Android Developer portal! I mean, people are not going to submit really useful or innovative apps. Am also considering porting an open source app. Or, making an HTML5 app.
Finally, got email. I sent copy of ID. Now I have to wait 24-48 hours for it to process. So excited/anxious.
Also, this offer is now good for all apps submitted. Not just Android apps.

Unfortunately, no. They only accept WebWorks, Native, AIR, and Android apps. I am not sure how difficult it would be to port it manually.
If anybody for any reason does not want their Playbook for whatever reason if they do this, I will pay a small fee for your troubles to get it off your hands if you're interested, this would make a great present for my blackberry wielding father.

Now after many of you guys who could have the tablet already were able to root and remove your bloat , so after rooting and being able to customize your tablet and DPI etc. how is it with the tablet going for you ? Would appreciate you sharing your experience so far
p.s ... this baby will cost a solid 1000$ in my country for LTE model .
It's definitely more responsive after freezing a bunch of unnecessary (for me anyway) applications.
For me my primary reason for purchasing was for s-pen in a large form factor. Based on that I expected to just de-bloat and use stock s-pen applications. I have no interest in any other Android tablet at this time.
Question is sort of odd though; I wouldn't expect a lot of people to have gone through the hard decision of rooting such an expensive device and then say they felt it wasn't worth it.

well its not that odd bc its not just about the money etc its about the whole experience etc and what could you get out of the tablet with the more real estate and i have seen some people regretting buying it etc. am a junior architect and i was waiting for something that big to use it with the s-pen too .. in my place you wouldn't be able to resell the tablet if you didn't like it or didn't get what you expect from it etc even i watched many reviews about it and sounds pretty interesting the limitations around me makes me have some concerns thats it
Right, my point is the "is it worth it" evaluation for a person who has rooted their device will have already occurred before rooting so of course you'll get more responses in the affirmative. I suppose it's not impossible that some will chime in to say that even after rooting it's unacceptable. ...perhaps odd is the wrong thing to say...just don't expect a majority of people who have rooted to tell you that they wish they hadn't.

It's sometimes good to freeze (at least as a test-bed) because some apps no matter how innocuous they may seem could be an integrated part of the system. Removing them might break functionality within other apps or even the system itself. For example, on some systems if you remove the pre-installed file manager because you prefer another (Solid Explorer RULES!), it might break the Gallery app which could interfere with setting wallpapers even from other apps. That example - from my phone.
I want root to address the following things...
1. Remove multiwindow application restrictions
2. Use LMT or similar launcher for home, back, menu, etc.
3. Change the DPI (smaller icons, more real estate).
4. Backup/restore with Titanium Backup
5. freeze/remove system apps/bloat.
6. Install AOSP browser w/Flash
Rooting I noticed nothing different. I installed xposed and wanam to get the things I like. The main thing that changed was I lost the symbols on my keyboard. I can still get them by hitting the sym key, but can't long press the letter keys to get the symbol. It doesn't matter what language it's set to, they are not there.
Also, my video player developed an issue when it set to fullscreen. Lines through it and very choppy.
So I have un installed wanam and exposed, and video is normal, but still no symbols. Had them out of the box.
Thinking about Un rooting to see if it fixes the issue on the keyboard.

Did anybody noticed that phon behaved weirdly sometimes ??
You thinking too much lol
THe sad reality is, because everythning is free, they must make money on personal information and " big data"
THe sad reality is the whole phone is one big spyware. If you look when you install apps you can see what they have permssion too. Also if you read the agreements you can see they basically have access to most of your personal information and photos and contacts. This is the sad reality, unfortunately people do not care or think as much about it.
On PC it is more easy to protect yourself from collection of "big data" with extensions like Privdog in chrome browser, also with more powerful anti-malware programs and firewall which you can control more easy.
But most important of all...you can actually uninstall all apps you do not want, as it is currently you can't delete pre-installed spyware..
Not enough people are investigating the problems cause there is simply to many phones and every phone has it own software.. if everyone would had the same software just as iphone more people would investigate spyware problems...
for a phone like Mate 7 no one will investigate the software... like for instance a samsung s5 which have more users.
One thing I like with Mate 7 though is that you can choose which apps that have internet access... this is very good and powerful... and will help you be more safe if you do not trust a certain app..just block internet access to it.. and the information a certain app collect luckily will stay just locally on your phone.
This is only an issue if you give it root access? If you pay attention to what permissions you give apps then this shouldn't be too big of an issue... Or if you stay non rooted, its a non issue.

It does at least in regards to the exploit you are talking about. The article says
The malware affects versions of Android older than v.5 (Lollipop) and requires root permission to hijack the shut down process.

which means to perform this hijack you need to have root permissions. Unless you mean that they have given special permissions in which pre-installed software has this enabled...but i would ask to what end. There are much easier ways to track user behaviour and collect data, and this would seem to massively impact battery life and phone performance.

Thanks to another forum member, I was recently notified that Google took the app down, so I re-upped the one I had installed. I find this tool very, very useful so I figured others might need it too.
I didn't program this, and I'm not a programmer myself and I take no credit whatsoever. If there's an issue, let me know and I'll take down the post.

They took it down? Why? It's very helpful!
Thank you for re-uploading it.

Then download now while you can. Thank you again. I had this on my Nexus 5, and now my Moto Maxx -- but not my wife's Nexus 5. I'll store it someplace safe.
It's in other stores, plus he will give you a copy, I've read. Be nice and donate if you get it from other stores

Everyone should have the SElinux mode app, do you have the choice of permissive,or enforce. It does have benefits but IMO too many drawbacks

The app is now open-source!

I finally got the "security" warning to immediately uninstall this app. HA! I clicked "don't show me this again". Love this app.
Take that Google!
I tried version 3.01 in conjunction with Code Blue and Franco kernel. The mode switch doesn't seem to stick using that version - after rebooting, both kernels reverted back to their default "Enforcing" status. However, version 1.2 seems to do the trick. Just a heads-up, especially if anyone here uses certain apps that rely heavily on SELinux status such as Viper4Android.
how to permanently disable the warning from google? it won't get off from my notification area.

Open Google Settings app and go to Security and uncheck Scan device for security threats. I think it should work.
EX Kernel now comes with the choice again, in Aroma
Any progress after v3.2
Got issues under SuperSU2.76 which blocks installation...
