No Gorilla Glass on ATT S4? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So I just got off the phone with customer care. I was exchanging my S4 for another S4 (faint white lines across screen). Before she puts the exchange through she gives me a warning...
"Now just so you know, the ATT Galaxy S4's do not have Gorilla Glass. Other carriers have it but ATT does not."
I proceed to explain how it makes no sense that Samsung would do that and she replies...
"It's not Samsung it's ATT. We have to pay extra for Gorilla Glass and we did not."
I then asked about the ATT version of the HTC One and she replies...
"The ATT HTC one does have Gorilla Glass, the ATT Galaxy S4 does not."
She went on to explain how they've gotten tons of claims regarding easily broken screens on the S4 and so they were recently informed that the lack of Gorilla Glass is the culprit.
I still did not believe her and went ahead and exchanged for another S4. Yet she sounded very confident as she explained it to me and continually batted down my doubt. I went att.com and checked under the details to see if it mentioned anything about Gorilla Glass and it does not. Although it does not mention anything about Gorilla Glass under any of their phones. Verizon on the other hand does advertise Gorilla Glass on their website. Sprint does not.
I wanted to be sure to share this with the community and get your thoughts/opinions. Retarded customer care rep.? Or something to be looked further into? I personally find it hard to believe Samsung would even make it an option to ship some of their phones with and some without but anythings possible.

Hahahaha what a dumb customer rep.

Retarded Customer Care Rep!
It's entirely possible that AT&T would have had to pay extra to use the brand name "gorilla glass" in their advertising, but not likely that the phone doesn't have it since Samsung already stated that the Galaxy S4 has Gorilla glass 3. If only some S4's had GG3, samsung would have said the S4 was "available" with GG3 or something like that.
At best, their reps usually don't know squat, but the suspicious side of me suspects your rep was trying to get you to move to an HTC One because they've got a bunch of them languishing on the shelves.

Im sorry but this seems not possible at all. I could see the extra cost to advertise maybe.. But samsung makes the phones for the carrier, i doubt its an ale-carte build your own s4 to cost type of deal. Samsung makes them and adds carrier branding most likely and walla done deal.

The customer service rep is full of it.
Don't expect the help desk person to know more than what Google will find for you...

a gorilla glass display costs less than $3 and a non gorilla glass display probably costs $1 or so.
OK people, on odd numbered days we use gorilla glass 3 in our flagship S4 phones and on even numbered days we use something else that's remarkably like gorilla glass 3 even down to the oleophobic coating, but honest, we swear, it's NOT gorilla glass 3. Yes, I know it "looks" like gorilla glass 3 and comes from the same supplier, but trust us, it's not because AT&T doesn't want to pay the extra $2, so make sure you stack the phones manufactured on even numbered days on the other side of this line right here. If you get confused, just look at the sign right there. It says:
Gorilla Glass 3 ----------> Samsung Flagship S4
Samsung almost but not quite Flagship S4<------- Not Gorilla Glass 3
It's got GG3 in it, ATT just didn't pay Corning to use the GG3 name, that's why you don't see it on ATT's website in the S4 specs.

It's not true.
Also if you're really THAT concerned about your screen, use a screen protector. Gorilla Glass is strong, but it's ability withstand scratches/damage is highly overhyped and overrated.

it' possible there is no gorilla in att galaxy s4!
many people dropped their att s4 on the first drop and the screen cracked!

While we are at it, my phone only has 1 GB of ram and it's a dual core.

if we can't tell the difference of whether we have it or not, then how good could it really be? i've already got a micro scratch on my phone and i BABY this thing, no drops (on my new one i should say, first one cracked screen from a 4inch drop, legit)

Call center run incentives for employees a lot. It could be that AT&T center might have a reward for the person who sells the most HTC Ones.
It seems to me the representative was using whatever they could to coerce you to get the HTC One. Nothing can stop the person from saying what they want. Albeit not always the best thing to lie.
AT&T just so happens to be running a great promotion on the HTC One.... So it is plausible.

For me doesn't matter. Getting a Spigen GLAS.tR. H8-9 Hardness its at least as strong as Gorilla Glass plus replaceable if scratched.

Weren't most the screen damage posts about the display not the glass?
I am not overly careful with mine, since my arthritic hands keep dropping things. It has dropped from more than "4 inches" and no issues. I am always wiping it off on my "rough" Henley type shirts. Shirts are generally polyester which is a plastic derivative. No scratches at all. I can, doing the same thing, get minor scratches in my eye glasses and get yelled at by the wife.
Also, just leaned on it while re-positioning my self on my car seat. Phone was on center console on top of a flexible lid that opened to a storage area. So, lid and phone flexed. Scared the hell out of me. But, no phone damage.
I am coming to the conclusion it is a very sturdy phone for "most" and a small percentage of owners have not been so lucky. That doesn't console those who have had issues though.

Pretty sure your right most issues were cracked displays under the glass

So I have a sprint s4 and have been having issues with the screen cracking. After eescalating the issue to a supervisor at Samsung they have confirmed that no us version of the s4 includes gorilla glass. 3 supervisors have confirmed this as well as the executive customer relations department today. I started a thread identical in the sprint s4 forum.
James

My at&t store claims they are in fact gorilla glass 3 screens. It doesn't add up that they'd change the screen when Samsung manufactures them and at&t is a service carrier.

I don't have the link, but google kindle fire teardown to see if it would be easy for you to do yourself. If you think it might be, DON'T USE REPAIR UNIVERSE FOR THE REPLACEMENT! Horrible items, slow shipping even if you pay extra for next day, horrible customer service and no phone support. Good luck and im interested to know how your kiddo did that too.

Wouldn't put it past a 4 year old to find a way to shatter inch thick steel.
My three yo knocked mine off a table, 24", on day 3 and broke the glass. I called Amazon and they offered me a replacement for $100. I figured it was a decent deal considering the amount of time it would take me to procure replacement glass and to tear apart/put together the device.

Its like the warranty on my pelican case, covers everything except shark bites, bear attacks, and children under 5.
Amazon will sell you the Square Tade 2 year warranty for $45 and you get 3 replacements during the term. Obivously you don't tell them the screen is already shattered when you call in to order it. Co-workers 5 year old brother got one for chirstmas and broke the screen 3 days later. She bought the warranty about two weeks ago and made the claim this week and Amazon overnighted her a new Kindle.

I think 2-4 year old kids are one of nature's most destructive forces. Imagine if they somehow organized and decided to focus that power!
As Toonakan said, Amazon offered a replacement for $100. Half the price of new seemed a bit steep to me. There are some 3rd party repair places but they are all about $130. Ebay has some parts for about $50 - $70. I will probably just go with that if I can find a seller that looks trustworthy. I have replaced screens on a few phones and gaming systems over the years, so I am not too worried about doing it myself.
The problem with a less expensive device, is repair costs seem a lot more expensive relative to the initial purchase price.

I don't know if you are in the UK but if you are then many bank accounts give free insurance for phones, etc.that option might be there in other countries too.but you need the right type of bank account for that.my bank account gives me free travel insurance, break down cover for my car and phone insurance among other things.a lot cheaper than getting these separately.

I dropped min today from 20cm height and first 5 minutes later it cracked in 2 pieces so I feel your pain. I checked what the spare part costs, and it was 285 euro's for the AMOLED+Glass apparently it is glued together so everything has to be replaced, and then you need to add the work costs. So it probably will be cheaper to buy a used one and sell yours for parts

No, this is wrong. Manufacturers lie about only way to replace glass+display. I broke the Galaxy S screen, and at samsung service they told me to replace everything, and that I have no chance to replace only screen. But I decided to try replace it by my self. I buy glass for Galaxy S on ebay for 9$. Then, using guitar pick I removed shards of glass. Then pasted on the sides of the glass with glue. And that's it! Fits perfectly. Works even better than before.
Yeah I need to upgrade current account to get it...don't have a problem doing it but was just unsure how long it will be before I can claim. But I also thought it might take longer to get it repaired than going for a mobile phone specialist insurer...also with the bank insurance..I know a while back my brother claimed and they didn't even ask for his old phone that was easily repaired!
Also just like to add...I really didn't apply that much pressure to the screen been, nursing this baby. So be careful. Wouldn't wish it on anyone to go through the pain I am.

Getting and claiming phone insurance after your phone is broken is fraud!
Either insure your phone beforehand, or deal with the consequences of not doing so, but don't break the law, and put the premiums up for people who had more foresight than you!

I would strongly suggest you did not claim for it after the event as this is a criminal offence.
You may however, wish to check if your household (contents) insurance covers such damage and/or if your credit card covers accidental damage if you used it.

You can go to most shops and get your Galaxy S fixed for 90-100 euro where they only switch the glass but with the Note you can't find anyone, only to replace the whole thing. I have an insurance but was not sure if I was going to use it because it is my 2 device in 1 year that went busted. But it is painful to be remembered every time I turn it on so I will find out what the costs is going to be and use my insurance. I guess not using the insurance when you have it is to commit fraud

Dropped phone-Tale of woe.

I was the proud owner of a shiny brand-new Galaxy S3 as of 7 p.m. July 14. On my way to the mall just before 3 p.m. the next day to purchase a cover, it slipped out of my hand and hit the pavement. Damage to screen and bezel from a fall of only 2 1/2 feet. The back cover even popped off! I had watched the drop tests for this phone and knew that with this one there was no way I'd think about not getting a protective cover. It is definitely not as tough as the other previous Galaxy S models. But I never would have expected so much damage from such a short fall. Anyways, it is going to cost me 130.00 for the deductible through the insurance claim, plus the aggravation that is already starting. It was supposed to be easy-peasy. Instead of helping me in store (they kept saying they couldn't do that-access to my account purchases at their fingertips plus me there in person with ID!), I have to print out an affidavit along with proof of ID. I totally understand that, but why not just help me in store! You guessed it, I don't have my own printer (I've been meaning to rectify this) although I do have a scanner. Long story short, lack of a scanner means I lose 24 hours-can't do this until tomorrow. Then barring any further BS from T-Mob or Asurion, I'm told I get a new phone the next day. Too bad I'll be out of town by then, but, oh, well. That's what I get for not having a printer. Now for the real rant! Gorilla glass my a$$! If Samsung is going to make a phone with this slick plastic back and with a plastic bezel, they should just ship it with some cheap plastic protective cover so that you can make it out of the store and have time to shop for a cover to your own liking! Don't get me wrong, I love my new phone, however I'll really consider the build quality of the next phone I buy. I will especially pay attention to slick edges and plastic bezels.

The guy at Car Toys brought out the ugliest case I'd ever seen, so I refused it. Went out the next day at my earliest convenience to buy a decent case. One block from home, disaster struck! Would have been cheaper to buy that case and throw it away the next day. It is costing me $130.00 in deductible fees for the replacement. Now I've read that some guy dropped his while in a case and it still broke.

Simple solution: don't drop your phone. I didn't drop my HD2 in the whole year I had it.
I have to tell customers the same thing, we have nothing to do with Asurion, you can use my phone but I cant file anything for you unfortunately.
The only reason you have to jump through so many hoops with Asurion is because since you just got it, it hasnt registered on your account, so there is really not way for them to know if you actually own the phone unless you provide that affidavit and proof or purchase.............I broke my S3 after 2 days and even though i work for T-Mo and still had to go through the same thing

That's what I wanted from them, to use their phone. Also would've saved me time if I could have printed that form right in the store. I had everything I needed with me at the store: receipt, box with IMEI, my ID. I wasn't asking them to do it for me, just to call from there and confirm from their records that I purchased the phone. Anyway, a couple of calls today to Asurion got them to approve my claim a little faster, but not in time for the replacement to arrive before i leave for Seattle. So it's being shipped to where I will be there.
Mine broke within 6 hours of having it. I got it, late at night, fell asleep while texting, and when i woke up it was on the floor and the screen was cracked to hell. I silently weeped. I was suppose to get a case the next day.

OP I think you can sign up online for insurance within 14 days of getting the phone. Check your plan/phone options on AT&T website. You do not have to prove to them that the phone is in impeccable condition.
You might want to look into 3rd party insurance that covers that type of thing, such as Square Trade for future phone purchases. Accidents will happen, but most warranties don't cover things like this.
And in terms of the crack itself, I think this proves what I always suspected about Gorilla Glass 3 - it is stronger by design, so they make the layer thinner so the phone is thinner. The layer of smaller thickness is just as strong (hopefully not less strong) than the thicker layer of GG2 on SGS3.
With the screen larger than the one on SGS3, there is less bezel on sides of the screen, less support for the glass layer, and that makes the whole screen less rigid.

Yeah unfortunately I did the same thing, and mine got a crack in it, what is really unfortunate is the fact that the lcd touchscreen and glass may be glued or so close together, you might have to get the whole thing fixed and samsung charges 169.95 to do it and I've been told if you wait a few months it will get cheaper, but I don't know by how much.
Otterbox defeats these incidents ...dropped mine out of an airplane 15 ft and not a single scratch...

It is not fraud. You are NOT obliged to have a functioning device while signing up for this insurance online. They just make the sign up window short, to protect themselves.
But speaking of this insurance, yes, i just checked, AT&T will charge you $199 deductible for SGS4!!!!!!!!!! That is on top of $7/month ($84/year) they want you to pay for insurance.

Better to invest in the ugly (to some) otterbox or kraken.
unless you have insurance, or you must pay some money for this damage:laugh:
Sorry for not posting, I've been busy with work.
An update: I talked to AT&T and told them I received the phone like that and must have happened when it was shipped. There's no physical damage as I can tell. The crack is on the inside of the screen. I sent the phone out to them and they said they'll inspect it and ship me a new one.
I would def recommend getting a case, something that can survive a fall because I had a case on this but it's pretty lightweight compared to others.

While on this topic, it should be noted that many major credit cards offer protection for free against exactly this kind of stuff. I know Amex does.

i had this one on:

it's so lightweight and didn't really protect anything.

Damn that sucks. Sometimes it's just the angle of the hit that gets you. I'm wondering if it caught a corner or edge of something on the screen. It really sucks if the glass cracked from the tension produced by the corner of the shell hitting the ground.

Heh, critics weren't lying when they said the Galaxy S4 is way more fragile than the S3. I knocked off my nightstand in the middle of the night, landed on my wooden floor and have this dumb hairline crack.
The phone is only 5 days old and this may seem like a dumb question but is it possible for AT&T to switch it out?

Just keep it and use it until we can buy replacement screens.

Shattered screen-FYI

So I pretty much shattered the front glass as I was getting out of my car my phone swung under my leg in my pocket and as I exited my car I put my weight down on the phone and a spring in the car seat. I wanted to cry.... SOOOOO, I called Asurion they want a $175 deductible, so I thought I would investigate and see if one of these cell phone repair places can get it any cheaper..FAT CHANCE. First off I was warned that if I let them fix it they would damage the housing beyond repair and they wanted $329 for the screen.
tldr; get a case and screen protector for this brilliant phone
No thanks.
That's a shame. Having read about other experience with shattered screens and camera lenses I was a little worried. Then my son drove over his (on a dirt road but still...) He dented the case a little and got a slight scratch on the screen... that was it.... Maybe it depends on the angle of the impact as to if they break or not. He did NOT have any protective case around it making it even more bizarre... but I still believe in them.
Good luck with it.

HTC does screen repairs for 180 USD and it will come back as if the screen never broke.

I absolutely agree with OP. Get a good case for this phone. I've already broken digitizer in my phone because i forgot to buy a case.
Unfortunatelly anodized aluminum isn't grip friendly
Sorry for your loss , I bought the case below from Amazon UK for £6.99, and it is immensely tough, the part that covers the screen is padded and i can hardly bend it, it`s so strong.

I have the glamour red version so a case would make having this colour pointless. No case for me, just a good screen protector.

I refuse to get cases for HTC and iPhones since they have beautiful designs and are made of nice materials. Now, Samsung phones are a different story

I can understand that. I only let her play under my supervision and with my permission. And only locked to her kid games. Once she is somewhere else or grabs it without telling me its gone. I'm not lax about it because I'm making payments on it. I agree with you there.

i dont let them touch my phone because "its for work"
so i give them my "wifes phone" instead lol
I didn't say they don't play with electronics. I said they don't play with my phone. I paid nearly $600 and do not intend on needing to send it off for repair when the inevitable happens.
My boys have a shared line on my account and use it to call and text family regularly. They also play games, search the web, watch videos and what not on their Amaze, my wife's extra tablet or her One S. Hell, I even let them use my GS3 occasionally as it is mainly a work email device.
They have also broken a G2 and a Kindle Fire and put dings and scratches on every device I listed above.
I still stand by what I said. My One is not a toy. Hand me downs are one thing but I understand that the chance of an accident is much higher with children and I choose to mitigate any risk.
