As I was searching for something in the market place I ran across an Antivirus app:
Antivirus (Free version)
Antivirus ($9.99)
The Antivirus Pro (paid version) provides ongoing scanning of Android device, protecting against viruses, malware, OS exploits to ensure the integrity of applications and data. + Additional services for identifying phone location, using 'findR' to find lost or stolen devices based on GPS and cell tower ID.
In addition to the paid version, the free version scans mp3's, zip files, sd card's and has behavior mobile security.
I'm using the free version now and am debating if I should buy the full version.

Anyone else using the paid version? If so, how is it working out for you? Recommended?

There's another app called Lookout Mobile Security FREE that has darn near 5 star rating. It does pretty much what the paid version does of the Antivirus app above for $9.99, except that it's free.
It says, Winner of the Best Android App 2010...
It also has Phone Finder...which comes FREE with this App...
hhmmm
nope I've been using Lookout. Seems nice
There are viruses on Android? That's news to me. I mean, fake programs that steal your data, yeah, but viruses?

Haha it's all new to me too my friend...My initial reaction was, "Anti What? For Android?!"
I was so used to communist apple OS, being an iPhone user before where the word 'virus' was never in my vocabulary.
I'm going to try LookOut...heck it's Freeee
My opinion, don't waste your time with this man. Just uses resources of your phone.
I DO suggest lookout though. It is amazing to log into a website and find my phone (works pretty dang well), OR if you lose the phone in the house you can make it ring really loud.
With this app you also get AV and the ability to backup data to their server. I do not use the latter (you can disable features easily). But I have left on the AV for kicks and giggles.
I have NEVER heard of a virus on android, haha.

I'm using LookOut now...much better program it seems than the other one. The phone location feature is pretty neat too.
As long as you actually consider the permissions when installing apps and don't grant root access to some unknown app, antivirus is COMPLETELY unnecessary.
There is a virus inside elternal legacy HD (especially) and asphalt 6!
DO NOT DOWNLOAD THESE FROM ***!!!
It will take you to a fake gameloft survey where you say your country and favourite os, and when you touch "send", it says 'thank you for your donation' and sends infinite messages, charging your phone bill. The only way to stop this is battery remove or task killer.
I wasn't one of the victims!
That's why you should only download apps with descriptions and developer names
Thus, thou shall not use warez.
+1 yup.............
AVG android id's virus in GingerBreak?
Just by dumb luck, I had loaded avg pro on atrix. When blithlely following directions to load GingerBreak, received message from avg that program contains a virus and I conclude that either: 1. I had to unload avg and then load GingerBreak or 2. ask in this forum if this message is for real. Any and all responses will be welcome.
Thats the reason why i deleted *** from my Phone! There are so much Viruses, in which you will have to pay. If you want to be safe, buy them at the Android Market!

*** is down anyways now... so peace

The problem is that the android market is also not safe from viruses (although, probably more safe since it's monitored by Google and they can remotely remove malicious apps...).
I currently use lookout but wondering if there is a better antivirus.
How is AVG ? I'm using it on my desktop computer and like it but somehow got the feeling that it's too "heavy" for Android.
Morning mate,
You can use ESET. Has has now their own AV. EMS (Eset Mobile Security) You can grab it from the market, currently in a BETA stage but quite advance and very low footprint on any device. It's definitely on the same playing field as any awesome Antivirus/Malware prevention tool.

I used ESET for a while. I use it on my PC and my laptop, so when I saw it in the market, I got to installing it right away.
It slowed down my phone horribly and no matter what I did, I wasn't able to uninstall it (My phone was not rooted at the time). After trying everything I found on the web, I eventually got to backing up everything I had and factory reseting...
They've probably fixed that bug by now, but it was still pretty annoying...
Can anyone recommend any other Android anti-virus software? It has to be "good", obviously, but it also has to quietly run in the background, eat as little battery and memory as possible.
P.S. My device is a Galaxy ACE (currently rooted and with leaked Android 2.3.4 firmware)
On the PC I used and removed Eset. It was a real pain spending huge amounts of time removing junk deeply imbedded and left behind in the Registry. As such, I'd be hesitant to try Eset again especially on an Android device. Furthermore, I read where Eset used their own secret vpn to bypass any local firewall to get updates, without telling the user.
I am skeptical of reviews by AV publishers like McAfee, Kaspersky, etc. warning of "the coming horrible tsunami of Android malware."
If anyone comes across a detailed Android AV review, please post the link.
no warez discussion allowed.
I see, no one was actually advertising/ requesting or posting warez, so there will be no consequences.
but since this is not an issue for anybody, not using warez in the first place, this thread is closed. if you got yourself a virus this way, there are enough tips to get rid of it, but it is your own fault.
also, i edited all the posts containing the name of the warez distributer.

Today, I turned on my phone to discover a strange new widget/icon on my homescreen that looked like a blue magnifying glass and was labelled 'Search'.
Of course, being suspicious I removed the widget. I then looked through the list of installed widgets and apps, but nothing unusual was there.
Later when I opened the internet browser, the usual google homepage looked a bit different - identical, tabs and all, except for the search button appearing the same as in the widget and the Google logo missing (as if it hadn't loaded yet).
I've reset my homepage to Google, but in my history the bogus sites are:
start.infospace.com
searchmobileonline.com
Scanned with both AVG and Avast, but neither picked anything strange up.
I have since found out that this is adware that some free apps on the Market are using to generate revenue. In my case I have since confirmed it came from Brightest Flashlight Free, an app with over 1 million downloads and 5 star average.
Here's an article explaining it *http://www.pcworld.com/article/245305/sneaky_mobile_ads_invade_android_phones.html*
Just though I'd warn everyone, as I'm a very careful / savvy user and only use very popular, respected apps, but still got it. Personally I think adding phantom widgets and hijacking your browser homepage with a fake google look-a-like is disgusting and bordering on criminal, as no warning or notification is made that this is going to happen, where it came from and how to remove / fix it.

Good call mate! I downloaded the AirPush Detector, AdFree Android, and Addons Detector thats mentioned on the post, and they found some on my SG2.
I will give all offending apps a one star rating, and this will get these dev's to act!!
Thanks
If you're going to give these apps one star ratings, don't forget to put a very scathing review up as well. A single star rating either way isn't going to bother these people much, but if you put a really negative review up as well, it adds a little impact.
In my experience, a brutal review tends to get devs attention fairly quickly, especially those who care about the rep of their apps
... and I wondered from where that magnifying glass appeared on my homescreen.
By the way, the icon sucks
I installed one crappy app from the market but unistalled everything fishy in the moment I saw that icon ...
This has happened to me 2x wish I knew what app it was. I normally only download popular ones too.

I have the magnifying glass too. I didn't notice it at first because I use TWLauncher 4.5 and it only added itself to the stock launcher. I guess its time to do some forum searching or uninstall all my add based apps.

I personally dont use any of the antivirus stuff but have my host file update for removing ads and use LBE security to block applications access to the internet.
Thanks

That's what I use it for. I like to trial an app properly. If I like, buy from the market, if it's crappy, delete.
The same happened to me, I only realised when a lot of my google searches were US based and not UK. When I clicked on the "privacy" link at the bottom of the Google page (or what I thought was google, it just had a different search icon) it brought up info about a different company, it wasnt the usual google privacy disclaimer.
In the end I think I had to uninstall all the recent apps because I wasnt sure which had done it and had to clear data on the browser to remove it.
My Samsung Galaxy Note has also been invaded by this searchmobile pest and I am looking for a lasting solution, or an app that can identify which app invited the malware. "free iPads" have also appeared annoyingly frequent.

++ lock the screen with password after 2 minutes.

2) virus protection

Try AVG, if I'm not mistaken it can also locate a device, I am sure that it emails you immediately to notify you if the Sim has been changed.
EDIT: there are many apps that will email you a photo of whoever fails to unlock the device, I'm sorry I cannot provide links or names but I have tried a few, they work. You can google this one.

If your daughter goes to school, then there is a huge chance there is some kid at school that can flash her device. A few points to think about.
1) If your installing these apps with out her knowledge, you can't get mad at her if she has someone flash it.
2) If your installing these apps with out her knowledge and she finds out, you've now broken her trust of you. As a previous rebellious teen girl this is a big mistake, something she will not forget anytime soon.
3) My daughter has to read daily as well. What I do is read the same book as her. We make it fun. While I make dinner we discuss the book. If I find she hasn't read it yet today, I suggest she go do that while I make dinner.
We don't use technology as a punishment or reward in our house, it's just part of life. My daughter (an yours probably too) can just go to a friends house and surf/play/whatever with out my knowledge. It's more important that my daughter trust me and know that I trust her.

I know most of the things to improve battery but I want to know if anyone knows of other ways to improve battery. I have a s7 edge now on G935U. I know rooting can improve battery life but I can't find a root method for my phone on 6.0.1 and I don't want to risk bricking it unless I know for sure it would work.
What I do to Improve battery
Disabled auto sync
Disabled auto update
Disabled all bloatware with package disabler
AOD is off
Never keep WiFi on during sleep
I know about black screen or dark themes
Adjusting brightness
Turning off location
Turning off Bluetooth
Turning off WiFi
But really what else can I really do? I feel like my battery life on my s7 edge sucks. Any help?
I always logout of facebook, no matter what phone I have, seems to help keep that battery muncher of an app under control. Auto display brightness, pocket detection and dark themes. I get about 22 hours out of my phone on a charge with medium use. 3 to 4 hours screen on.
I always use AoD, have never noticed much of a difference in battery with or without it.

Use it to disable any system apps you don't use. Focus on the ones that are in "pink text" Also Don't ever use any Facebook apps. (Facebook, FB messenger, FB Page Manager, FB contacts etc) I delete the data from all of them force stop them and disable them first thing. They do a ton of shady stuff in the background that eats your battery and disguises itself as "Android System" on your battery usage page.
I wish Samsung would stop including them in the Firmware all together. If you have to use Facebook just go to the website usering the Samsung browser app with Crystal ad blocking on and block the cookies. Facebook is a shady company even just going to the website from your phone can drastically impact its performance from all of the trackers they install on your device. IMO the entire Facebook app suite should be flagged as spyware by Google.
Next look for AT&T software. There is a tone of it. You can just search for att in the search bar and it will pull it all up. AT&T like to gather a TON of your information and usage stats in the background as well. This too is disguised as "Android System" battery drain even though it is not. Any apps branded AT&T that you don't use get rid of them.
Also in the case of this device, there is No REAL root process. There is an ENG BOOT root, but its super buggy and generally terrible for battery life.

My biggest tip for improving battery life is staying off of large Wifi networks (i.e. school, airports, work) . The constant LAN wakeups will kill your battery.
-Turn off location when not in use (I use tasker to auto turn on/off locstion when bluetooth connects/disconnects in my car)
- i disabled carrierIQ using System Tuner, which seems to have helped (requires root). The EZ Package Disabler Rootless method did not disable carrierIQ for me.
Disabling "bloat" apps didnt really help much with battery life IMHO
I get about 4.5-6hrs SOT. The eng_boot root method is really not as bad as everyone says it is after you apply all the fixes that are floating around. (V15 fix zip, L speed, govtuner)

Poor cell reception or there is an app constantly pinging your location.
If you have Facebook installed and allow it Location access that could be it.
Also sometimes Google Play services gets hung up for the same reason. A reboot will fix the Google issue.
Lastly it could be at&t. If they are working on towers near you it can cause this drain, or if you have not disabled the AT&T apps that track your phone.

FWIW, you can use the Edge "My Places" panel to automatically manage wifi on/off based upon geolocation or bluetooth, and some other ways. I use it to automatically force wifi off whenever in my car (because of bluetooth connect) or at work (via gofence, no wifi available), and that helps. It's also standard on the GS7edge.
The battery life has very little to do with Facebook or Messenger if you have the settings for the apps tweaked to not notify on every little thing. Also, you can limit background data inherently in Android, thus using less power to get real-time updates from either app. You can limit Messenger's notifications, including eliminating chat heads, etc. If Facebook were solely responsible for poor battery life on this device, it'd be the same on very device. That just isn't the case. It definitely is a resource hog as-is, but not if you contain it.
That said, I'm a big advocate for limiting background data for any social networking apps: FB, Snapchat, etc. I would rather have to open an app to see what I've missed than have dozens of notifications throughout my day. I save real-time updates for things like email, Amazon, and the like. You can also set wifi settings to not be so aggressive (I believe mentioned earlier in the thread). Beyond that....root the device and set up custom power settings and profiles for CPU, etc. Your performance will potentially suffer for it, and the eng kernel has the worst battery life of any I've ever used, but there are ways to fine tune it that you simply can't achieve without root.

Have you actually done any research into what the Facebook app does? It's a system app, doing the thing you mention above without root will not effect its ability to use your data and drain your battery. It's not about the core features of the app its about all the spying it does. FB Messenger keeps a log of every messenger you send whether or not it's sent through the APP or not.
Facebook installs trackers on your phone that read your credit card and banking apps data to track purchases. It also pings your location to know where you shop and what you eat. Then feeds you ads related to it and tells the companies you bought something because you saw the ad. All of that data is bundled up and sent out to be resold to any company that wants it.
Any phone iPhone or Android that comes with the Facebook apps pre installed on it the apps are the main culprit of battery drain and random data usage. There is even a lawsuit filed in California against Facebook saying it is illegally using both data and power and disguising it as normal system usage so end users don't know that it is their apps to blame.
If you know anyone who works in advertising at a fortune 500 company that has bought ads for Facebook they will tell you the same. And if you do any real research into Facebook apps programing you will see it is true. Their are MANY people who have tore apart the apks to find exactly what I am talking about and shared it all over the Internet. Facebook spends millions with PR companies to keep it quiet, because the only way for them to monetize their app is to offer highly targeted ads and purchase tracking.
As for rooting the S7E its garbage, not what I consider REAL root and a waste of time. Also it kills the performance of the device.
Particularly this app.
Trust me if you like your battery life and/or your privacy disabling Facebook is the most important thing to do to any device you get.

Facebook is not a system app when it's obtained through the Play Store. Here's a screen shot illustrating that; I have a backup of the system app, but it is not currently installed. I've installed from the Play Store, and it is not installed as a system app. Permissions are in my full control, and even if I weren't rooted, I could disable the default Facebook app and install anew from the Play Store.
You made quite a few claims with zero citations, criticizing me for not knowing the depth of the Facebook advertising conspiracy. Facebook is pretty transparent about what it does with your data and who it is allowed to share that with. It's all accessible for the curious minds of conspiracy theorists. All of which derails the topic of this thread, which is battery life.
Clearly, you don't use Facebook in the form of an app, and I do. That said, I can attest to having considerably better battery life when I tweak the permissions, data consumption allowance, and notification settings.
Let's keep this thread on topic

On some GS7E variants it comes as a pre-installed system app (AT&T for example) and you can't undo that w/o root.
I uninstalled package disabler pro and battery life got better, and system ui is much faster, am also using adguard, it uses a lot of battery but also prevents all those ads to use battery as well.

I uninstalled all that because my phones battery was dying over night
