[Q] Installing Custom ROM - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

This is my first TouchWiz device, a GS4 on Sprint. I've tried to install several custom ROMs and I keep getting errors that seem like GApps won't launch or isn't launching correctly. I've tried the FreeGS4 ROM and the ForceROM with the same effect. I am not allowed yet to post in either ROM's thread and neither seem to mention a specific GApps download. I have been using the Gapps that GooManager downloaded automatically as I have not found another.
Any tips would be appreciated. More information available upon request as I'm not sure exactly what is necessary.

Make sure and back up your current rom through recovery first then do a wipe of system and data partitions. Install new rom wipe cache and dalvik cache, fix permissions then reboot

Okay, I'm really new to TWRP. It's completely different from CWM or the process is. I'm having a lot of trouble. Please give me as straight forward of steps as possible.
All I need is to install a ROM and GApps. Mostly, I want to know if GApps is included in the ROMs I specified: FreeGS4 or ForceRom2.1.
If anyone would rather suggest a ROM that they prefer and the GApps to go with it, I would try that too.
If I can't get this to work soon I will try the UnRoot method to see if I can get this phone working.

You don't flash Gapps with any touchwiz rom. So any rom you find in the Android Development forum be sure to NOT flash Gapps.
And other than a few minor differences TWRP and CWM accomplish the same basic thing, instructions from what to do in recovery will be same in either recovery unless specified.

Alright. That could have been my issue. Somehow my bootloader was corrupted too, so could only get into Download mode. Trying to format back to MDC right now, then will see if I can root and install TWRP again.
This is a lesson for everyone: Don't drink and mod.
One last question: Using ODIN to flash back to MDC, can anyone estimate the time it might take to reboot? I believe I waited around 20 minutes last night and the boot never finished. Not sure what to do at this point.

yea thats deff your problem bro.. u cant flash gapps on a touch wiz rom.. gapps is only for an aosp rom

[Q] Im new and lost

I just had my dad do a full root on my evo just for the wireless tether. i really love the options that have opened up and want to pursue them. i want to be able to install boot animation, lock bars, and themes. the problem i am having is i really dont know where to start. ive done alot of research on things but doesnt really tell me exactly what i need to do. i have been told that i need to get a new rom to be able to use custom themes and lockbars and stuff like that. with that i was told i need to do a nanoid backup. so what i am asking from you guys (the expertts with alot of patience for noobies is step be step instructions on what i need to do. i dont even know how to do a nanoid backup. tell me what actions i need to take and what apps i will need to make all this happen. please help me all the other forums tell me is stop being a noob are use the search feature. i just dont think other peoples posts are exact;y what i am asking for so please give me help so i wont be such a noob and have a custom look on my evo.
I'll help you start by flashing a custom recovery which will allow for nandroid backup, data wipes, and flashing custom roms.
1. Download Rom Manager from the Market
2. Open Rom Manager and flash ClockworkMod recovery, which is the first option in Rom Manager. You can use this recovery, which should be installed if your father ran UnRevoked 3.2 to root your EVO.
3. However, I recommend scrolling down to the bottom of Rom Manager and flashing the alternate recovery, Amon Ra. This is the one I prefer to use to flash my roms and whatever else.
4. Grab Quick Boot from the market for easy reboot into recovery or you can just power off then hold vol down + power on to boot into HBOOT. From HBOOT, you can scroll to select recovery, which should put you into Amon Ra.
5. In recovery, you should see Backup/Restore option. Click this and do a nandroid backup. Let it run through until it states completed.
6. Return to main recovery menu, and goto wipe. Select wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache. You can do each wipe twice just to be on the safe, if you like.
7. Once nandroid and full wipe done, you can select USB-MS to connect your SD card to your PC to load a custom rom onto the root of your card. Once loaded, just disconnect the SD card by hitting power button and return to main recovery menu.
7. If your custom rom is on the SD card root, you should see the rom zip file when you select flash zip from card. Scroll to the rom and select it. Let the rom flash process complete and then reboot the phone.
8. This should take possibly 3-5 minutes to completely load the custom rom onto your phone.
9. Hopefully, everything worked out and the phone boots into the custom rom's homescreen or handsfree setup.
WoW
WoW i dont even know where to begin on telling you how big of a help you was, you answered my post exactly how i needed it answered for me to understand it and be able to do it......thank you soooo much
I do have an additional question to this, what custom rom should I use? Will it have 2.2? And are there tutorials how to install themes? Do I need to have sense to install these themes?
I really appreciate your assistance!!!
Hit up the development forum and check out all the roms. Look at the screenshots and features. When you find one you like, grab it. Check out Fresh 3.3 and Myn's Warm twopointtwo. I've used those both in the past. Those both have Sense and Myn's ROM is already themed (and looks nice in my opinion). Themes are flashed the same way as roms and the descriptions will tell you if they're Sense-compatible.
Remember to make nandroid backups frequently. Find a rom, get it set up to your liking, nandroid, and then get another rom and do it all over again until you decide on one.

choice of rom is up to you, most you'll see will be 2.2 which you'll want for full flash support, to be able to install themes you will NEED and (deodexed) rom. Look for deodexed roms, and there are plenty. A lot of themes will be flashable zips which you install the same way you install a rom (through recovery-install zip from sdcard-choose zip from sdcard).

Thanks you guys! I sorta figured out how to apply themes using the recovery screen after boot up, but it caused the screen to go black HAHA. But anyways, I couldn't find a definitive answer to what I was looking for. I will check out the deodexed roms, thanks!
I one more EXTREMELY important thing about themes, do wipe cache and dalvic twice, but DO NOT WIPE DATA. That is probably why your screen went black. Eithe that or the rom was not de odexed

[Q] Please help (ASAP)

So I recently received my nexus 4 device and was actually debating if i should root the phone or not... however I ended up rooting it and this device been working rock solid (I highly recommend any Android user to root their device to have access to unlimited customization). Few days later I decided to flash AOKP, and I did however during the boot up process after flashing AOKP screen was stuck in bootloop mode (unicorn screen that says Initiating Swagger at the bottom)... it kept going on for almost 30 minutes, until I decided I should reboot the phone.... after reboot is complete I now see that my phone is flashed with AOKP, its by far the best ROM I have ever used Period... however here comes the downside, i have almost half of my applications missing including Playstore and many other applications.... i tried fixing the issue by rebooting, formatting, wiping data and cache, nothing seems to get my applications back.
I have few questions I would like to ask...
1. has this happened with anyone before ?
2. is there a way to fix this error and get my applications back ?
3. should I unroot the phone, then root it again and flash AOKP or that would not help ?
any answer would highly be appreciated... thanks in advance.
i tried unrooting the device...
everything seems to be fine until i type in the command (./fastboot-mac -w update image-occam-jop40c.zip) i get the following... sending 'system' (531281 KB)... ERROR: usb_write failed with status e00002be
FAILED (data transfer failure (No such file or directory))
any suggestions ?
You have to flash the rom AND the Google apps package.
You can find it here:
http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip
Flash that in recovery after EVERY rom flash.
reply,
Thanks for the reply, I figured it could be the google apps package... If you don't mind am kind of naive when it comes to these stuff, would it be possible to tell me how to do it step by step ? Id be really thankful to you.
Ps. I have no clockwork recovery installed on my phone, and I cant seem to download anything with playstore missing
additional info
I can't seem to get into Recovery mode, every time I try to I get the android logo with the open chest and the red triangle in the middle, and it says ( No command) under it... any advice?

That's the stock recovery. You need a custom recovery to flash gapps.
Boot into the bootloader and flash a customs recovery. Either cwm or twrp.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
actually, dont flash the gapps after EVERY rom. some aosp roms like aokp and cm need the gapps flashed seperately. but many aosp and stock roms come with the gapps preloaded. just remember to read the whole original post and the directions to know what and how to flash and you probably wont run into problems like this again
---------- Post added at 04:10 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:01 AM ----------
oh and to get clockwork mod recovery follow one of the how to stickies in one of the threads, general or development, about how to use the bootloader and fastboot (just google how to get the android sdk where you get all the things like adb and fastboot) and also how to get back to stock which can be very helpful. oh and i highly recommend one you get your rom flashed to download goo manager from the play store to install twrp, its way better than cwm. and for your rom i also recommend the codefirex rom, i find aokp to still be in its earlier stages and just be a little slower and less battery life than codefirex. another good rom is xylon, its also very smooth.

the main reason I use AOKP is that it allows me to disable the navigation buttons and with fullscreen view on a device like nexus 4 especially after you get the screen color fixed with (nexus 4 display control) this is a TRUE BEAUTY. I replaced the navigations buttons with LMT, i find it highly functional and stylish.
Am thinking I should return the phone back to stock, then start all over again to avoid all errors, only issue is I have no idea how to return it to stock.... tried using mac and pc but both wasn't working properly... I guess am missing something here. Any recommendations ?
If rooted, download Rom manager, open it, flash custom recovery. Boot into recovery after install. Touch install zip from sdcard, flag GAAPS zip file and reboot phone .
There you'll have the Google apps package now.

[VIDEO] Idiot's Guide - How to Install CM10 on the HP Touchpad

This is my FINAL VERSION of my Idiots Guide for the HP Touchpad. Now that a stable enough version of CM10 is available, I finally created a guide for you.
Here are links to the files you will need:
CM10 03/04/2012 Build
GAPPS 10/11/2012
ACMEInstaller3
Moboot 3.8
Anything else that you might need, you'll find on http://www.reverendkyle.com
Thanks for the video. It came just in time as I just purchased a used TP that had an older version of android ICS already on it and I wanted to upgrade but seeing as how this is the first device I have sort of inherited already rooted, it is hard to just jump in and know everything that I would have learned from the beginning like i did with my previous phones.
Anyways, I did everything you said except I used the newest AOKP rom. But my tp is still booting to the older version of android that I had on it. Any ideas? Feel free to pm me if you prefer that.

If the AOKP ROM is using a unique uImage file, then you may see two different entries on your moboot screen for two different Android builds.
What does your moboot menu have in it?
Maybe your install failed. Try downloading and flashing it again. If you're trying AOKP JB, you should wipe both /data and dalvik cache to avoid a boot loop!
If using AcmeInstaller3 remember to rename the ROM with ”update-” at the beginning so that it looks like update-AOKPJB_UnOfficial.zip

I believe it was the "update-" thing that was keeping it from updating. I followed another video tutorial which provided files that had the "update" in front of them and it worked.
I haven't tried yet but now that it worked will the regular method of wiping and flashing through recovery work? (Like, if I want to try out different JB Roms) Are there any files that need to be in a particular place for the recovery method to work? I tried that method first and it would never take, would always revert back to the original version. Don't know if, because I just jumped in and haven't been here from the beginning, I am just missing a necessary step that is hardly even talked about anymore.
Love your work Rev! Thank you again for everything that you do!
Update went like clockwork, unfortunately I can't seem to get the camera to work (not a terrible loss, but I was sorta excited to see it actually working with this release).

I can attest to the improved battery life on this cm10 build. Amazingly, it holds battery life when it's sleeping now.
Thank you so much for taking the time in making the video for us. Your instructions are easy to follow, hard for anyone to mess up.
(The hosting site for the files is not working, not sure if you were aware)
Hi, I have CM9 running on my TP. With the latest release, the camera works great. But before updating it to CM10, I'd like to know about the issues currently in this build.
Thanks.

Don't go for external mirrors unless some recognized developer suggests them. Best will be to wait for goo.im to come up again, being a prime site, it won't be down for long.
The goo servers do appear to go down on occasion. They always come back up a bit later.
Problem with installing GAPPS using ACMEInstaller3
Excellent tutorial for an idiot like me. Thanks for again for the guide! Question:
I followed the instructions step by step and was able to get CM10 installed successfully. However, I wasn't able to get GAPPS installed using this method. From researching I understand sometimes there is a problem installing GAPPS through ACMEInstaller3 and one can simply get GAPPS installed through CWM Recovery. However, I would like to use/have TWRP instead so is there a way to get GAPPS installed properly through ACMEInstaller3 and then I can install TWRP through GooManager?
Alternatively, is there a way to install GAPPS without using CWM Recovery?
Or, I guess I can install CWM Recovery first, then install TWRP Recovery, then remove CWM Recovery while keeping TWRP and not go back to the stock Recovery? I tried to search the forums and wasn't able to find instructions on removing CWM Recovery WHILE still keeping CM10 and not go back to the Stock recovery.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.
@reverendkjr - appreciate your videos. they're awesome. definitely helped me (and several other friends) many times and saved a ton of time. super easy to follow.
Yes you can install TWRP normally, flash gapps in CWM then install goomanager app, open and click the 3 dot menu and install custom recovery script then it will install it
Now using a root file manager go to the directory called boot and delete uimage.cwm.img (this is from memory but still should be correct

[Q] Major problems

I don't even know where I should begin.
Ever since my first android (s3) i wanted to install CM on it, tried a few times but failed.
Now I'm a gt i9505 owner ( i sure do think that is my model, it says so in phone info atleast ).
Been rooting in numberous of times, been flashing cwm numberous of times, been trying to install different versions of CM to it.
No sucess at all, just failing all the time and I have to factory reset my phone.
So this is more like a two part question.
How in the hell do i get my phone to run CM?
And next thing. I had to stock install it via odin many times too. got everything back the first few times but the two last time I install stockrom, i get no google apps at all.
Tried to download a google play apk, two different version , still no sucess..
Is there anyone here that can help me ?
Much appreciated.
Download XXUBMH1 and follow this guide to install official stock ROM, after that install PhilZ Touch recovery and then follow this guide to install CM 10.2
Thank you very much, I should try that then

[Q] Help a noob, cannot boot after trying to flash stock rom

So I'm pretty desperate and I apologize if similar info was posted somewhere else. I've been researching several hours but couldn't find anything.
I originally installed CM11 and decided to experiment with a different rom TriForce ROM [TouchWiz]. I put the zip file on my SD card and booted into clockworkmod it gave an error of bad zip. I tried different usb port to transfer the zip, downloaded it multiple times with no result. So I decided to try a different rom Stock_Rooted_Deodexed_MF9_Rom.zip. The installation finished but the phone would not boot.
Recently I flashed the stock rom from odin, it finished successfully but still not boot, Galaxy sreen lights up quickly and that's it.

Make sure you're using roms for your version of your phone. the MF9 bootloader is really old and probably wont install anymore. My phone did this before and I thought I bricked it, but I kid you not I took the battery out and removed the SIM card and rebooted and it booted up just fine. May not work for you, but I suggest you go back to update stock firmware then try again. If you're using the triband model, there's a post around here somewhere with confirmed roms that wont brick your device. I'm currently using the Google Play Edition Stock ROM and it's working GREAT.

Just hold home power and volume up. Right when you see text at the top left let go. You have to have the right timing

After almost eight hours of troubleshooting I finally got it to work.
I've tried flashing clockworkmod several times to see if I could get into recovery with no result so I gave up on that and I flashed the newest stock rom I could find L720VPUFNG2_L720SPTFNG2_SPR and it was still not booting. Than I thought maybe twerp would make a difference and god almighty it finally booted! I felt as if I gave birth to a child after eight hours of labor!
Now I'm extremely paranoid about touching anything because it took me forever to do this. Does anyone know why flashing twerp would make such a difference? I know this sort of stuff can get extremely complicated but I'd like to try to understand.
I hope my foolish agony contributed to this community if not in any other way except by the comedic relief caused by my ignorance.

Depends what recovery you had and what version. I personally like Philz touch recovery but TWRP is good. Now wipe and flash a ROM my friend or restore a backup

I recommend flashing the newest one here using odin
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2
Then once you are able to boot into recovery go to wipe and perform both factory reset and format data. Then install whatever rom you like, I used Sprint Galaxy S4 SPH-L720 VPUFNAE (Androdi 4.4.2) found here
http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-stock-firmware/ (or maybe find a newer stock rom if this one gives you errors)
Just copy the zip file to the phone, boot into twrp, do wipe factory reset again, select install then select the zip in whatever directory and you should be good to go. Make sure you do a back up in twrp once you get the phone to boot so you can always revert to stock.
I hope I was thorough enough that some of the information was useful. Let me know if you need any more help.
only certain recoveries will stick. ive tried the most recent twrp, with no luck. only a few versions of philztouch work.

Format with philztouch that works then try flashing a new stock rom with odin. That should bring everything back to stock including the recovery.
ive tried. when i flash rom via odin i only get a blue "recovery booting" at the top of boot screen. even when i only power on, not into recovery. im going to attempt to flash rom provided in previous post via philz.

You're in download mode when you flash from odin right? If you your getting an error flashing, try a different stock rom after reformating/resetting to factory (it's crucial to clear the cache before trying a different rom). I had to try a few roms before I found one that worked.
