S4 "ACTIVE" support? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Curious if the soon to be released AT&T Galaxy S4 Active (sgh-i9295) will have any developer support? It will have many additional desired features; I.e. aluminum body; shock, dust, and water resistant. Only to suffer loss of 5 mega pixels in rear camera.
¢ via SGH-I317

It's the same platform as the 9505 or its counterparts. I'm sure developers will figure out the drivers for the water resistance.

Back to topic, accept the camera, everything of the device is the same as the i9505 variant which has development support.

According to Samsungs announcement the S4 Active is not entirely the same. It has a 5" TFT LCD screen - no Amoled - and I'm realy very very happy about that! I don't know if the different screens will make it harder to use roms from the original S4 but I hope not. Also I'm not sure about the aluminium body anymore... According to a few websites reviewing the announcement the S4 still uses an polycarbonate backplate - a thicker one but no aluminium. Would be great if they are wrong on that one.
Now that the one big flaw of the S4 is out of the way (Amoled screens - I just don't like them...) this device sounds very good to me and I sincerly hope that it gets its share of developer attention

i hope they just post its own section soon

Galaxy S vs. Nexus S

Nexus S now has the spotlight, because of the Google brand, but what does this mean for other devices, especially Samsung Galaxy S phones? One effect is Gingerbread has now been ported from Nexus S to Galaxy S (see their forum).
Why compare the two phones? Their specs aren't far, but they still have their own pros and cons. Looking at the pros that they have in common would also be interesting, like how they share parts (same battery) and software.
Nexus S' advantages over Galaxy S include
Google brand (and the software that comes with it)
NFC
contour display
Nexus S advantages over some Galaxy S units
price (in many cases)
unlocked (vs. some Galaxy S units)
front-facing camera
camera flash
complete 4 buttons (back, home, menu, search)
Galaxy S' advantages over Nexus S include
Micro SD Slot
availability (international + many carriers)
Gorilla Glass
Bluetooth 3.0 (vs. Bluetooth 2.1 on Nexus S)
Other factors are hard to measure, like community support, so feel free to suggest pros and cons then I'll add them to this post.
I was compelled to post this, because of Galaxy S' Micro SD card, gorilla glass, availability here in my area and Nexus S software ports. Would you prefer Galaxy S over the Nexus S?
its a matter of preference
Just a few observations:
1) Vibrant also has Gyroscope as far as i know.
2) Any of the GSM based Galaxy S phones can be easily unlocked for free.
3) Complete 4 buttons (back, home, menu, search) ??? Don't quite get that one.
Everything sounds about right, except for the Contour display on the Nexus, still trying to figure out what exactly is the advantage of having the curved glass.

I don't think the GS has many advantages over teh NS. Only gorilla glass IMO.
why list bluetooth as an advantage?
really BT 3.0 has more problems than 2.1
and did you forget to mention that a NS advantage would be Goolge Updates

Yep, figured that Gyroscope thing and edited OP. Galaxy S really has it.
Unlocking is quite easy for us, so yeah. Not a factor to consider for XDA people.
The 4 buttons is about the lack of a hardware search button on many Galaxy S units.
I'm not sure the Gorilla glass question was ever fully answered with either phones. The Galaxy S (i9000) is actually quite easily scratchable and Samsung never said it had Gorilla glass, they just never denied reports that it has a type of Gorilla glass that was allegedly not quite as good. The same that Samsung have said the Nexus S doesn't have Gorilla glass - I'm sure it will still have some form of hardening.
The screen on my Nexus S feels exactly the same as my i9000. Time will tell if it scratches the same.
I like to add:
Nexus S has :
Much better in-call audio quality.
Better build quality
Better speaker
Snappier software
GS:+Better Camera,Radio.
Yes. Radio is one aspect. Plus the cost is relative. In my country the Nexus S maybe quite expensive. Heck, we haven't even seen Nexus S yet. Will be releasing in February I hope!!!
Plus i read that even the Galaxy S is getting the Gingerbread upgrade in some time.
Galaxy S: 720p, TV Out
Is it true that you can screenshot in GalaxyS Froyo using back and home, but on the Nexus S you can't?
If you're in the right place then yes you can. But its much easier to root and use a screenshot app.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
+ touchwiz has many extras over stock os
+ plays divx, xvid, and maybe mp4 video
+ I think usb sliding door is very useful
+ 720p with Tv-out
Still have ability to add Front camera to Vibrant thanks to xda, and new roms and kernels make the phone fast and Gingerbread-like.
Nexus has NFS chip which is technically there but practically useless.

Bt 3.0 has faster data transfers, less connection loss, and most important it doesn't use battery as much as 2.1. About updates....while its true that nexus s will get updates, the only real update is 3.0 which is not coming anytime soon.....

As someone already said, the lack of hardware search button is one reason (on the i9000). It annoyed the heck out of me for a very long time, but eventually I got used to it, and adding the Voice Search button to Launcher Pro dock was a big help in that.
Also, on the i9000, I really liked the iPhone-like physical home button at bottom center. It lets you wake the device (or just go to home screen) much more easily when using the phone one-handed. This is the biggest user-experience challenge for me in switching to the NS from an i9000. YMMV.

All kinds of theories on the curved glass (reduce glare, fits head better, ???). My personal theory is that one of the big design flaws with the i9000, Vibrant is the huge bump at the bottom of the device on the back. I've disassembled the i9000 and there are some radio antennas down there. The bump is still there, but it's not as big (in terms of sticking out the back). I wonder if the curved glass just lets them hide some of the internals more towards the front of the device than the back.
That said, I think the curve makes the phone really sexy. Much nicer look than other phones out there.

Amen! On the other hand Supercurio, DocRambone, and Paul at Modaco have already started releasing stuff for our Nexus S phones, so I think this device will get the love that other Galaxy S phones didn't really get.
If you have a Galaxy S already, then no dont buy a Nexus S. thats a waste of money.
if you dont have either, then :
- Both have same screen
- i find 16GB is more than enough but the option to add more memory for Galaxy S is better " so its up to you how much movies/music you like
- Bluetooth 3 on GS is better than 2.1 on NS "wtf they were thinking ? "
- GS can play Divxs Movies " but this is not very important. you can download from the market Vplayer and it will play anything so this point mean nothing really "
- Nexus S has a newer software, and will be the first to get a 3.0 while Samsung is still thinking whatever they should give us a 2.3 or not on GS . hell even when they did port 2.2, it was very ****ty port so i am not holding my breath. and i am sure going to dream about 3.0 on Galaxy S because i will tell you right now. its not gona happen.
with all the negatives and pluses of both phone. if i have to buy one . it sure is the nexus S. its more "future proof " than Galaxy S.
but if you were able to find like a used galaxy S sim free for like 250$ or so " oe whatever you find acceptable, then hell go for it.
but personally i would wait. new phones are coming early next year that really much superior than a galaxy S and its brother Nexus S
I have both and I have to say the NS is much snappier than my Vibrant (which is complete with FFC mod and a great custom rom). My main reason for getting the Nexus was for the direct Google support. After waiting forever and ever for the 2.2 update that still hasn't come to US carriers I wanted to have a phone that I knew would be supported and the NS is that phone. Having 2.3 stock is great and it's coming to the N1 shortly which makes me feel a little more at ease.
The community on the GS side is great. I still love that phone 100% because of the community and I'm not selling it either because the community will continue to make that phone better with or without OEM support.

Galaxy SIV : 18 reasons to wait

This is a round up of all the rumors of what we can expect from the S4,
Does anyone here think that some of these are unrealistic?
Lighter, thinner? (not sure about this, as if they decide to put the S Pen built in, it will be hard to slim down the SIV)
Higher Resoltion
Bigger Screen
2GB ram
built in S pen
More durable
android Key Lime pie
Faster Downloads
Faster Uploads
13MP camera
Higher PPi
2MP front camera
Quad-core 2 GHz Cortex-A15
Mali-T658 GPU
non pentile display
longer battery life
Improved Audio quality
As long as it's not exynos it would be good.
....
more antixda community security builtin
more bs bootloaders making sure you get your warranty void
...
im afraid i will pass next time and try nexys or sont
do you guys think it will have a s pen? and if they put it in do you think it wont to slim and light?
Don't think it will have a pen, but you never know... Just wait a few months
I In have been a Galaxy fan since the first one.
Loved them since then. I really think that the phone has the best technology and characteristics in the market.
But the S3 is an epic fail in design and construction.
I would love that the S4 is metal or aluminum built and that it feels less flimsy on the hands.
I would also like to keep the screen size of the S3.
I know most will say if I want aluminum get an Iphone but I hate them. And I hate to say that the I5 looks much better than the S3.

Let me get this straight... This thread presents 18 reasons to wait for the Galaxy SIV, even though none of them is anything more than pure speculation?
Interesting.
In that case, I have 5 more reasons to wait for the SGS IV:
1. Android Lemon Tart
2. Smaller charger
3. SMS Typing with the Power of The Mind™
4. Ability to print money
5. Built-in smoke detector
I can't wait! :silly:

You do know there is more chance of getting shock damage if you drop a phone made of any metal don't you? Plastic absorbs impact much better than metal ever can.
There are rumors of S4 having Tizen OS instead of Android

This might be correct but. I'm not talking durability I'm thinking in design aspect. We are paying 600+ $ for a plastic phone?

Galaxy S IV = Galaxy Note 1.9
Please no, 4.8 screen is already enough. To increase it to 5.0 is better to buy a Note. The actually perfect size is 4.7, from the Nexus. Fits very good on the hands. Somehow, smartphones needs to stop increasing the size. If there's a Galaxy Note already, why should the Galaxy S get close to the Note?

That's not a metal Vs plastic test, the S3 has an extremely thin bezel which offers much less protection, it's the only reason the screen can break easily.
And from a design point of view, so why can I spend over 3k on a plastic TV? Over 1k on a plastic laptop? PS3 was over £500 on release guess what plastic. Its not cutting corners, making things on the cheap it's about making them out of a suitable material, Apple makes their products out of Aluminium for one reason, to drive the price up.
You want proof that Apple does this, The put a 4g chip in the last iPad in the UK, although the UK didn't have 4g. They marketed as 4g although the 4g chip only worked on American frequancies, and would never work in the UK. They were forced to change their marketing and website to remove all mention of 4g in the iPad.

If aesthetics are more important to you than functionality, then I don't know what to say, I like the look of the S3 I like how it feels in my hand I don't need to make it inferior just to satisfy the people who care more about looks than more important things.
Also on the looks if you make the phone out of aluminium, one drop will put a huge chip in it, because aluminium is extremely soft. If you really want an aluminium phone, get your S3, take it apart and wrap it in foil, and bang there's an aluminium phone.

I choose S3 for functionality and all it has inside. Speed etc.
But it's my opinion there are nicest phones out there. Yes of inferior quality with not all the pluses of the S3.
Just hope that the S4 looks as good on the outside as its quality on the inside.

Honestly you would get a phone made of aluminium and one drop a huge chip in the edge, it will never look or feel as good, whereas with the S3 you would only get a crack, if that.

What if the S5 was metal??

Would people still be complaining?
Seriously, over 90% of the time when I see someone with a phone they have it in a plastic case.
The uproar of the S5 is annoying...if it bothers you that much then get the HTC One which will probably end up in a plastic case.
According to AndroidCentral, the S5 screen is now as bright and good as the Note 3 (which has one of the best screens I've ever used), a better camera, and waterproofing, not to mention theyre still one of the few phones to offer a micro sd slot.
If anything it should have had 3GB ram and started at 32GB instead of 16GB, but in every other instance it looks like a solid device.
It does not need metal, but pls not that ugly, even moto g looks better
Samsung is only caring about our money, how to make the most money

It should have better material along with a fresh look. It should have a newer version of TW that looks/ feels new and doesn't crush 8+GB of storage. It should focus a little on the sound quality.

The back cover isn't the problem, like you said most are going to use a case. I certainly will buy the Buckdroid and the Otter Box Defender also don't confuse waterproof with water resistant. It's "only" water resitant not water proof.
I don't want metal. Metal = heavier. I would have like a thin bezel though...
I don't mind the plastic at all. Too many people complain about it not being metal. Plastic is lightweight, less prone to scratches or damages when dropped, and you can remove the cover for the battery/SD card, which is always a good thing.

People aren't complaining because of plastic. The problem is the hype created becacuse of rumored UHD screen, 64bit processor, a giant battery and even the deal Sammy made with Google. I don't know if 3gb are really is necessary or not, I never used more than 1.3GB but 32GB of storage would be nice. Maybe it's because of the new rumored Galaxy F, they say the GS5 will be cheaper than the GS4 so it kinda makes sense.
no, the material is no problem for me.
what maters to me is:
1. back cover design. I'm not type of people who like to use colorful case, I like the transparent one so when I use my phone, people will know what phone I'm using. And that design is not work for me. I personally more like pattern of the S4 back cover. It feels more elegant to my eyes. And don't say those faux leather in note 3. I like it almost. So if the S5 use those like in note 3. I'll be more attract to s5 rather than z2.
2. the battery. It's already boosted 200 mAh from the s4. That's great but not enough. I own myself a S4. It's pretty durable when use power saving mode. but that's where I hate it. When in power saving mode. When I move from outdoor to an indoor place. The screen is very2 dark and I almost can't see it. I don't know about this mode in S5, or the stamina mode in sony device. If same as in my S4, then I need bigger battery for my next phone so I can use it in full day without those power saving things.
3. As like many other people in xda discuss it about when it's first implemented. knox things. I hate when samsung finally use it. I know it's just a flag, but I didn't know how the regulation about that knox warranty here in my country. And if that knox used as one of main upgrade (like that knox countainer in S4 upgrade from 4.2.2 to 4.3), obviously we here can't use it. And make the upgrade less.. useful I guess. Since phone performance will not dramatically change because the phone still have same component

The only thing is, who put out these rumors? Samsung never hinted at any of these.
If the phone were metal, it would be metal. Samsung has always used a good grade of plastic for their high end devices and I prefer plastic over metal for my phone. The design is not ugly either, to me it is a decent design but it's also an uninspiring design looking at two factors.
1. Samsung claimed that the S5 would have a new design, claiming they will go back to the basics with this design.
2. The design looks like the past offerings. I understand brand identity, but aside from the back and the usb port, the design almost matches the S4 and a smaller version of the Note 3.
its not about metal or plastic , its about the design it self :silly:

But thinking about it, the resulting design is very logical as opposed to the wet dreams of forumers, it's a mix between the S4 and the Note 3 with a few new elements. As logical as it gets. Not very exciting, but probably a rather good design choice usability wise.

The HTC One had a totally revamped design and revamped version of Sense and it only won smartphone of the year. If this phone didn't say Samsung, it would be a huge fail

judging by the released shots of the next gen HTC one, it looks nearly identical to this generations.
Waterproof isnt an issue? Do you know how many people get denied service on their phones for "water damage" even though the phones were never dropped in water? I've had it happen to me multiple times merely because steam/rain/humidity turn the sensors on to indicate water damage even though Ive made sure they never got wet.
People can be such hypocrites sometimes, everyone was bashing the iPhone for being the same thing over and over again, then it was samsung and everyone hailed the HTC one, now they are going to release the exact same phone let's hear how they gonna defend that. Problem is its very hard and costly to come out with different designs especially when you're releasing more than one device a year. I don't like the s5 and don't think will buy it

I don't care about plastic or metal but let's face ever since the s3 samsung has put out extremely fragile phones that are prone to cracking. The s2 was made from plastic but it could take a beating not the s3 or s4. I use to see cracked iPhone 4 screens but since the iPhone 5 I see less cracked iphones and more and more cracked Samsung's.
The Nexus 5 is made from plastic but it has a very nice feel and feels more durable

If it was metal then when it falls and reach the floor the repair cost will be double at least...

Metal is overrated.

[Q] Disable completely the s-pen features

Hello to the community
I want to disable S-Pen completely and permanently on Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or Note3. I dont want the electro magnetic field of the wacom digitizer of the screen to be turned on even if the stylus in not in its silo . Is this possible with some hidden option or some extra app?
Thanks
So, probably there is no such option or app available for that purpose.
At least is it sure that there is not a emf present on wacom digitizer while s-pen is in the silo and the battery saving option is on?
Any one with emf meter (or second adnroid device with the free emf meter application) to measure if the emf desapears with the s-pen in the silo?
Thanks

+1 Surprised someone bought Note series and don't want to use S pen. For me it is one of the major reason for keeping Note series.

Was the reason I bought a note 3.. and also the reason I've not gone custom rom so I can't use it!

I am just searcing for an android phone with at least 5.5 inch amoled display. S4 and S5 has smaller screens, and i dont like the idea of curved ones like Galaxy Round or LG Flex. So the only remaining options are the Note phones. Beautifull big aboled screens. Just what i want.
I dont have one yet. If i found a way to disable the electro magnetic filed for sure then i am going to buy it
.
I don't know if any one of you have any health problems with the produced emf of wacom digitizer. I found this site where people had health problems after long usage of wacom digitizer.
Maybe someone found it informative but it is now allowed to me to post the site yet.
That idea of freezing some processes is interesting. Or even better an small app with a small icon in the corner that terminate those proccesses automatically... Do you know these processes?
Additional ideas are welcomed

But isnt it more likely that the built in radio's have way stronger E.M.F. than the digitizer?
Else check for the Xperia Z Ultra, or for some tab without radio's so you don't have E.M.F's. at all!
ps to the rest; why dont you stop putting your opinion down when it DOESN'T contribute to the thread. You know who you are. This is still a Dev. community, not Justin Biebers fanclub-site.

Yes, much more stronger emf but only for a few seconds as i dont talk too much to the phone, and zero E.M.F will in Flight mode
I checked for Xperis Z Ultra, nice one but without AMOLED screen. I love AMOLED screens. Not those LED backlight ones. Also there is no tablet out there with AMOLED screen. Yet.
Thanks for the suggestions.
What about those custom rooms that don't have spen function?

If you wont pull out stylus you wont activate S-pen functionality as simple as that, go buy Z2 or LG G2

Ah ok, ill compare the Z ultra with the Note3 next time i have a chance.
But last i looked the Z ultra did have a very nice screen tho. :good:
Goodluck in your hunt to EMF less devices, please report back if you have any succes.

That is exactly what i am talking about in my post 2. I believe that is the case but i want to be sure. Apparently no one has an emf meter to measure this. The Z2 and LG G2 doesn't have AMOLED screen.

Incorrect, at all times the EMF will be greater from the radios except when they are off.

From the radios sure, but the rest of the device will still be producing a particular harmonic frequency as do all electronic circuits.
If I may be honest I really think this is a fools errand as all devices will produce a certain amount of EMF and in most cases it will be greater than that of the digitiser. Turning flight mode on kills all radios but not all sources of EMF, for that you need to turn the device off, and if you turn the radio and the wifi/bt off there doesn't really appear to be much point in a device with a >5" screen.
Most EMF is harmless in smaller quantities, and there are regulations around how much EMF can be emitted from a device for FCC registration. Also when you turn your phones radio off you are still surrounded by the EMF it receives (850/900/1800/1900/2100MHz radio frequencies are all electromagnetic fields.) Here in Australia there have been cases where people have claimed the wireless spectrum from a tower has made them sick, only for it to be revealed that the tower wasn't even turned on when they made the claim.
Also not to be a damper but you cannot really believe everything you read on the internet regarding things making people sick, there are people who will claim that anything is bad for you if you look hard enough The question really is has a wacom digitiser made you feel sick. If not then don't worry about it. Worrying about something potentially making you sick is more likely to do more harm to your health through stress than the thing you are concerned about
Meaby you are right. Meaby its not harmfull at all. But... meaby. After some years we know for sure. But i dont want to be a member of on of those future statistical resurches...
I would like to have the capability to turn it OFF.
Alternatives
I have had my eye on other brands, not for the EMF reason although if that is your worry use hands free and leave the device in your bag, it's more the knox nonsense + the up & coming Tizen terror Samsung has/will inflict on their consumers.
I like the specs of the LG G2 pro & the one plus one but will have to get my 'hands on' before putting down the Note 3 as I have had the note from version 1 & the digitizer is a boon, pressure sensitivity is not such a seller but the writing & precision is, I have found alternative stylus type implements but again it will be trial & error.

hope my input helps.

Thanks for your reply.
I dont suggest you to do it. I see the screen of G2 and although is good is not compared with the superb AMOLED screen of Note 3. Those unbelievable colors and that deep black is unparalleled to any screen i have ever seen. That is the reason that i want to get the note 3.
I of course use handsfree or bluetooth all the time and the phone is in my bug and away from me. But it is impossible to play some games or see some pictures or anything else fun while the phone is in it's bug. It must be in my hands. And as we talk for inductive charging here for the charging of the stylus the emf will be strong. That is why i want to disable entirely the wacom digitizer, and if this is not possible, at least to know for sure that if the stylus is in its place the emf of wacom digitizer is gone completely.
Or get the Galaxy S5.
Or are there some things you want, that i forgot?
Pretty sure just walking outside provides more radiation and health risks than the E.M.F of any cell phone can ever produce.
Pretty much everything you can do in life poses a higher risk than a cell phone.

Screen is an unfortunate description. Most people use this to describe the exterior Gorilla glass. But it is sometimes used to refer to the AMOLED LCD or digitizer as well or even all three together as a module. If you are using screen in the common parlance, yes. If you really meant the LCD, then no.

Why wouldn't it fit? Display assembly should have the same measures even if they are sourced from different providers.

The differences are not necessarily physical. They may be electrical differences. Why do that? Ask Samsung, but it could be cost control - leaving out parts not used by a specific carrier or country. Or it might be an effort to prevent using a lower priced grey market part in countries where they price a variant part higher.
Whatever the reason Samsung did the same thing for the S3 /S4. For example there are at least three physical S3 layouts. Sprint, the remainder of the NA modules and the international version. The Sprint version is electrically, but not physically interchangeable with the other NA modules. And neither is electrically compatible with the international variants. I have direct experience with this on the S3. I'm told by Samsung parts that the same situation exists for the S5 and have little reason to doubt that this is the case as it is what they have done in the past.
