Driving myself crazy phone inconsistency - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I always used Xylon and always got good days use. Then ill eventually flash a new build cause its got new features and i can never get the battery life back the same how it was. I always perform multiple factory resets and wipes before clean flashing new builds. I use the same Franco kernels, etc. When i had my phone perfect it would drain like a percent an hour. Now its like 2-3.5% an hour and i dont know why. BetterBatteryStats checks out fine. Nothing is keepin the phone awake, the idle drain is just high for some reason. Is there a better process to start fresh? Should i flash everything? Flash stock rom, and bootloader and radio? Then flash xylon? would that make any difference?

Worked for me! I wouldn't definitely try it, I know it sucks, what's to lose

Ill definately give it a try. Will be like the 5th time flashing different roms trying to figure out why this is acting weird this month. Do you happen to have the thread to the latest radio \ bootloader flash?
I found the latest stock rom i believe http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2251958&highlight=stock

If you want better battery life you should probably flash the stock image through fastboot; https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

Well simply flashing the stock ROM is unlikely to do anything, its just like flashing Xylon or whatever, anyone who had an improvement had it from flashing the img through fastboot. You only have to do once though, if there is going to be any effect

Flashing new radio in conjunction with new kernel

So I just took the plunge and got off stock sense and moved to CM7. Couldn't be happier. I've heard to run pershoot's kernel as an upgrade, but to do that, you need radio 1.008 or whatever it is. I'm on 1.07.blah.blah
I've never flashed a radio before. I'm a little nervous. I guess firstly...I'd like to know if there are any advantages in both flashing a new kernel (pershoots) and/or a new radio? Can someone explain both...or if I really even need to upgrade my kernel from CM7's stock kernel?
I havn't had an radio issues yet...and I'm assuming a new radio would yield better signal strength, etc...but again, never done it. Any advantages to flashing pershoots? Thanks in advance
The radio may or may not give you better reception, few people got it, I upgrade and was still rocking my -99 dbm as usual and didn't notice any changes in battery life so YMMV.
btw~some people get stuck on the htc screen after flashing new radio, you can fix it by wiping cache and dalvik than flashing a kernel.
On the kernel, I just started using it as of lastnight and can say it's honestly the best kernel out right now, running scary or tiamat I would lose 1 or 2 % every 15 minutes with wifi on, with pershoot I am lucky if I lose 1% in about an hour while surfing the web. It's one amazing kernel.
As for the radio, i recommend just doing it... Everone has different experiences. As long as you check the md5 you will have no issue. Just remember to wipe everything. Also, with pershoot. Just do it its one nice kernel once everything is setup properly

no need to wipe everything with radio...
You might even have to format your sd card to fat32. Which will wipe your sd card. So back it up to your pc!
I was scared at bricking my phone at first as well, but if you get the md5sums and they match, you're ready to go.
Its as easy as placing the zip on your sd, booting to bootloader and letting it do its thing.
Simple.
If you want help, just pm me and ill give you my gmail adress so I can help you step by step.

If your going to flash a new Radio. Just follow the instruction in the OP of this THREAD . Also the OP has the new Radios. Just make sure you read and follow the instructons.
Personally I didn't notice any difference with the 1.08 radio. But you probably should update just to have the new new Like Thronnos said, CHECK THE MD5 SUM FIRST. As long as you do that and ensure that you didn't get a corrupted file you should be fine.
As far as kernels I'm still on the stock CM7 kernel. Works great for me with max set to 1.5ghz. People do say good things about Sparky's kernels but I couldn't ever bring myself to try one. Something about a dev who misspells Dalvik...

I was able to flash the radio succesfully, thanks everyone. Just gotta decide now on the kernel... I had the infamous HTC screen freeze, but after wiping dalvik and cache, it booted up fine. Phew

I am running pershoot but if I had to say, go with either pershoot or scary.
What does wiping cache do to my system? Does it clear phone records or sms history? (Sorry for my good spelling, but I'm still new to the whole dev/phone hacking thing.)
And how do I check md5sum?

Nexus 7 kernel issues...

I posted this over at rootz earlier today and didn't get any bites so I figured I'd give it a shot over here.
I may be the only one in the world experiencing this problem. Looked around quite a bit and don't see any sign of others having this issue... Anyway, my N7 doesn't seem to like it when I flash a new kernel. I've tried several different kernels and when ever I flash one my display will not wake up once it times out or if I turn the display off manually. Once the screen goes dark i have to hold the power button down and reboot. I have zero issues with custom kernels as long as they are baked into the rom. I typically wipe cache and dalvic after flashing kernels...

youre experiencing "sod", which is a fairly common problem with android 4.2.1 source code(not as common on the n7 as the gnex, but common enough). do you flash the kernel with the rom or do you flash the kernel separately?
This happens after switching out the kernel on any ROM I've used. Have not flashed a different kernel at the same time I flashed a ROM. I don't think that will make a difference. I can however flash kernels over my stock rooted backup... I don't know. Just weird and bums me out being limited like this...

I have tried flashing back to stock, relocking and starting from scratch. I do not undervolt...
A few good folks in the android community had experienced similar happenings and suggested lean kernel... Flashed it earlier this evening and working like a charm.

[Q] freezes on 4.4.2 custom roms / kernels

on the latest d802 4.4.2 custom roms and kernels i get a lot of freezes.
it will freeze in the middle of an animation and will take some seconds up to some minutes and then working normal again.
sometimes i have to hard-reboot to get out of freeze / lag.
on older 4.4.2 slimroms i never had this behavior, only since some weeks with new roms / kernels.
i`ve tried every rom / kernel combo but sooner or later i will get a freeze again.
could a revert to stock and re-rooting / flashing custom rom maybe a solution? i`m afraid to do this because of the long time to backup my 32gb data.
what are your experiences with the latest 4.4.2 roms and kernels? did you find a solution for this with any combo or fixes?
help would be appreciated.

The only thing I can say is I own the VS980 version of the device and i've tried every single 4.4 rom offered on this sight and have the same issue with all. Most of the time i'm using the device and it freezes, sometimes reboots, and sometimes comes out of it after a few minutes. Also not being able to wake the device only seeing a black screen and forced to hard reboot device. 4.3 seems to be a much better with these issues but not completely solved for me. I'm hoping the release of 4.4 source from lg will fix these issues but i'm unsure. So at least your not alone in these problems lol. I've tried multiple kernels and governors etc. Bumping up the min freq on the cpu seems to help and changing to interactive governor but doesn't eliminate the issue just help. I thought my next move would be to use lg flash tool and update to latest firmware reroot and install cwm.

the better option would be to stay some days on stock rom to ensure there is no hardware defect. but i can`t stand stock so this would be a hard route! ^_^

Yea unfortunately it seems very common among these devices so i'm pretty confident it's a software issue although i'm not 100% sure of that. I ran a flex rom for a few days on 4.2.2 and didn't have any of the same issues.
added a poll as a matter of interest.
omni-ROM, Mokee rom, vanir rom etc.freezing problem still continues.
Using CM11 (4.4.2) for 5 days with zero freezes so far.. note that this is on D800, not 802.

Yes, stock cm kernel.
I'm thinking back now and it did freeze once when first signing into the Google account immediately after flashing the ROM, but nothing after that. So.. nearly spotless
Nice! Maybe they are getting the issues ironed out. Haven't been on cm11 for a week or so since it was the worst with freezes for me. I'll have to give it another shot.

Best of luck! To be specific, I'm using the snapshot release of cm11... still don't trust the nightly releases
i did a lg flash tool stock restore, factory reset and OTA updates. now the freezes did not come back until now *knock on wood*.
when i did a backup of the sd there was one corrupt media file which was not able to transfer.
maybe the media scanner did go crazy and was the reason for the freezes.
using cm11 m3 on my d802... very little freezes compared to previous nightlies, fingers crossed

well on first note you can flash a rooted kk and keep recovery there are two ways of doing so, now for your first question recommending roms is not that good because everyone has a different preference in my case I need power and battery life since I mainly use my phone for gaming but you might have something else in mind so it's always best to just just flash on your own until you find something that suits your needs
Madhi rom is a pretty good rom and stable rom. So far I found 0 bugs with my everyday use. I recommend it. And having a nandroid backup makes the return to your stock rom a 5 minute process, if you didn't like it

Thanks man, can you give me a link? And nandroid backup is in cwm recovery right?
nandroid backup is called the process of taking backup your entire phone . data system cache etc.
You can find it in all custom recovery programs cwm , twrp .VERY VERY VERY usefull
I used both cwm and twrp for nandroid backup and it's a pretty straightforward process.
here is the link for Mahdi ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2590700

[H918] Random Reboots on Custom Roms

So, I had a day 1 v20 that began randomly rebooting back in december. Thought it was a hardware issue and finally got around to replacing it the other day. Now, after getting the replacement v20 set up on a custom rom (AICP) I'm seeing random reboots again. I've tried every single custom rom available for the h918 and they all experience reboots. When i've asked about the issue in the threads it seems as if I'm the only one. It appears to be a custom-rom only problem that apparently no one else is experiencing? The kernel panics are being caused by the modem, and it started happening when I upgraded to the 10j base. This replacement also came with 10j. Am I just super unlucky with two duds or is there really something going on here?
TLDR; Anyone else with a h918 with 10j bootloader/modem running custom roms and seeing random reboots?
What kernel do you use? If you use Konverged, it seems to give random reboots after a while of use. I noticed that right away though.

Are you making sure that you are wiping data when flashing a rom? Clean install should help. What other things do you use? When does it crash? Maybe a root app is causing this???

This is a fresh replacement device with a clean rom install. There was no data to wipe. Happens even without any apps installed and it's completely random and cannot be reproduced. The only thing I know is the modem is causing the kernel panics.

The entire point here is that I don't want to run stock or anything based on stock. I would simply chalk it up to the Lineage base but since I'm one of a serious minority having this problem I'm led to believe it's something simpler that can be fixed. Possibly related to 10j as most custom ROM users are still running 10d firmware

Anything not based on stock will give you issues. One reason why I like stock based roms is because the second screen will actually work... I would atleast test a stock based rom to see how it goes. If it works and doesnt crash, Then something is wrong with the rom or your could be flashing it wrong :/ Idk, just an idea to test. Non stock roms will Always give you issues. Always
If you still have issues on a stock based rom, then I would downgrade with the kdz and try again. Its probably crashing since the modem is 10j and the rom isnt really fit for that.

I never used the second screen, it's more of a nuisance for me. Everything it did can be replaced by gestures and lockscreen settings on custom. Only thing I miss is notifications but that's why we have ambient display.
I might try downgrading to the 10i firmware to see what happens. Unfortunately there are no 10d flashables. Otherwise this ROM is flawless.

Not to shoot down your opinion, but why would you get it if the Second screen is a nuisance to you?? Im also pretty sure camera is screwed on custom roms.... I just dont have that appeal. Not a Samsung fan. Especially with KNOX. I buy phones first based on the chances of development producing workable custom ROMs and second based on hardware features.
Back to the main topic: I just managed to flash the 10i modem alone so we'll see what happens. I'm working on extracting the 10d modem as well.
