Available Memory

So when im not running anything, when i open Advanced Task Killer it has like 125M is this right???
So what the other 387MB doing?

what I see
when I 1st start I have about 230MB, after a few minutes it goes down to about 90mb...without opening anything...seems many programs on the Samsung "open" by themselves...also, I see that the CPU goes down to about 100Mhz so I keep it at 1000Mhz with setcpu....plus deleted many Samsung apps(about 30MB)...helps with the lag...

Don't worry so much about it. This isn't windows, you don't need to worry about free RAM. Android will kill tasks as needed to free ram when it needs to. Some of that is likely used for disk cache as well. That will also be released as needed. Let the OS do its job, it's quite good at it..
Killing some of the bloatware will help as well, but you need root.
I also think that this phone, like the G1, has some of the speced 512M ram dedicated to the camera, GPU, and other stuff. In the terminal, free shows about 388M as total ram.

is it a good to create a swap partition on the SD card?

Why on earth would you want swap with this much ram? You likely can, with root and swapper, but why? This phone doesn't need it like the G1 did. Swap could help keep more apps open in the background, but there are already a lot of them there. I don't see any benefit to swap right now. What isn't working for you that you think is related to low ram?

wow...the vibrants ram is crap....

Im running on simply honey 3.5 gingerbread.... I cant even leave the browaer open to go back to check my facebook without comibg back seeng it reload... and i never get more than 150+ free memory... my aunts iphone 3gs has more free ram... and i know that it has 512mb shared but seriously.. Compared to other 512mb phones this is bull****... they get more than 200mb user ram...

Well i dont have problems on 2.2.1 roms but on every ginger rom like asgard and simply honney.... the ram is basicly crap cuz ginger takes like 210mb on startup :/

Its not the rams fault for processes being killed. Its the ROM/ Kernel your on. You don't want processes being killed use less aggressive LMK settings. The ram on the vibrant works perfectly as it should, this is merely a case of your system not being optimized for what you want. So simply....go fix it. Use less aggressive setting for LMK and a kernel with more user ram. But to be honest this thread has been repeated 1billion times over and people just need to get over the fact that Linux/Android IS NOT LIKE WINDOWS...free ram is wasted ram

This. Couldn't have said it any better Eco.

It's a setting you have on which is likely set to "Agrressive" meaning the minute the ROM doesn't think you need an app, it closes it, regardless of RAM. I can run quite a lot of apps simultaneously all the time. Not a RAM problem.

Yes, +1.... I Also Say thank you to Ecotox for articulating how Android works so well.
Furthermore, 2.3 roms really only face a 2-3 of real issues:
Because of porting and lack of dedicated Vibrant drivers we have too much battery demand/drain.... the lack of GPS because of no source code or drivers.... because of lack of drivers there are a few small hesitations as a result of porting.
But that said, All in All, the developers have done nothing shy of remarkable work getting these ported roms to work nearly perfectly...... their skills is why we have such choices.
Rather than complaining.......... try to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem/noise..........

RAM Usage high

Hi,
I recently moved from Note 2 to S4. With my Note 2, I was able to freeze apps with TB to a low 390-450mb used. I was curious why the S4 uses almost 1gb most of the time and I was only able to knock it down to 800mb used with freezing some apps identified on other threads.

I am also curious about this and I also switched from note 2 to s4 but im just going to guess because all the extra features it has and upgrades anf even if some arent in use they are probably on standby still taking up some ram, idk thats just what I think?

There are more sensors on the S4 and thus more services required to run. If you missed freezing them they will eat RAM, and if you freeze some you will threaten stability. If you aren't sold on the stock ROM then try something from ASOP. Or some of the fully debloated TW ROMs like GOLDENEYE.

This is Android, not Windows.

I don't know why you'd think it would heat up the processor, it won't.
While low ram isn't necessarily a bad thing with Android, linux based systems tend to use all the ram it can to speed things up,
With all of samsung's bloat it can slow things down if samsung bloat is taking up memory and you don't have enough for the active apps you actually using as the samsung bloat tends to stick around in ram even if your not using it.
Installing cleanrom (TW debloat) seems to have freed up some ram and things are running smoother than stock.

RAM does not heat up like a processor does, it will warm up because it has an electric current going through it, but it will not heat up more based on utilization.

Possible excessive ram usage with no apps running?

Just curious, but is anyone else experiencing 1gig+ worth of ram usage with no apps running? Just seemed a bit excessive to me for the system to take up over half the total ram in the device.. thanks in advance.

What is your concern here? Do you run out of RAM when you start up all your favorite apps?
No, it's not an issue for it to use half the RAM for the system. Keep yourself from looking at it. It's fine.

People need to learn how android manages RAM, it uses parts for system and the rest is only freed from older running apps when needed, high ram usage is not a ISSUE! as a great dev on the xperia play section stated @CosmicDan "Free ram is wasted Ram"

I would think that if it works anything like a PC, then the more code you can get into RAM the faster it will execute as compared to having it pull/swap it from disk, or chip sets.

True, but if you're using a custom ROM it could be a memory leak. I recently learned that *many* builds of CM10 for many devices (mostly Mali GPU ones) have serious memory leaks with hardware acceleration.

You can free 120-200 MB by disabling LG MIT
Type 3845#*802# (if you have the international version) in order to access the hidden menu. Scroll down to LG MIT and disable it

search how android uses ram, and you notice, theoretically (pun intended), why low free ram is not an issue(supposedly)

just wanna say something to reach 10 post for development access !

Instead of checking for low RAM, check the Running Apps list and find the offending app/service that is eating RAM. Then see if you can disable or remove it. It could be a memory leak from a bloat ROM app or one you installed. Right now I have 100MB free on my 1GB phone but its perfectly normal, because there are so many apps in background that I use. In fresh boot its about 300MB free, because apps like Facebook and Tapatalk run a service all the time.

Why does nexus 4 use more ram then s3 mini

Guys my previous phone was s3 mini which had cm 11 installed. It used 400mb of ram and nexus 4 with same ROM 900. Can you explain that :0

If the system has more RAM will use more of it because it will make things faster.

Have to deal with the fact that once you get below 500mb of free ram the device turns into a lag fest. Add in the 400mb or so that just running the system uses.
What's funny is the pr crap from Google. Oh we made kitkat to run on lower end devices. We used a crippled nexus 4 with 512 mb or ram. Well they failed. The OS still runs like a three legged dog when it's "low" on ram.

But I guess I won't be needing that since 2gb of RAM plus snapdragon s4 pro is just too high for phone to lag.

I'm a power user and i have never had more than 1GB of RAM used..... just install greenify and enjoy life
Also, what lag? Only lag you will see is if you feck up your kernel settings, if you turn of 3 cores completely or underclock to 700mhz lol

I'm using CyanogenMod not stock and I don't mind about RAM but it's simply plain weird that s3 mini uses less RAM on same ROM and android version.

Not really. Compared to this year's flagship devices, our nexus 4 cannot be considered as a high end device. Having said that, it still performs really well because of the stock android. Only drawbacks are its camera and battery though.

5 hours of SOT is good for a 2100mah battery....and regarding the phone status, it's still a High end device.
Just because it doesn't work at 2300mhz or that it doesn't have a 1080p display it doesn't mean it's not a high end device.
It performs as a high end device, which is what is important. What is the point of 2.3 Ghz when my N4 can run lag free underclocked at 1.1 Ghz?

You won't run out of RAM because android went let it happen.
The system / apps uses more than 1gb all the time. There should not be a need for root and greenify etc
You can see lag everywhere. It's there no matter what the die hard android fans say. The launcher lags in the widget selection part. Google plus lags and so on
Its funny how people see what the want to see. Most of the same people are also the ones that move on to the nexus 5 and say wow this is fast, I though the 4 was fast etc. They then immediately see the difference. Something you never hear from anybody going from a iPhone 5 to 5s.

I have no lag....not in G+, nor in Widget drawer.
iOS and Bada OS are similar. Bada 2.0 on my old Wave 3 was iPhone fast, and it only had 512 megs of RAM.
iOSBada & Android work differently.... what i've noticed that these closed source sh1ts have runtime similar to ART, hence they open up apps fast (even the Wave with 1.4 ghz single core & 512mb ram)

Whether it's better or not, I don't know because I don't use CM. Either way, it is good imo. You can try but not all phones are made the same. So, if it is good on mine doesn't mean it's good on yours too. You just need to try it yourself.
Note: If you are using CM, use the CM version.

That is why my friend, read what I said carefully. I did say it performs really well despite not having all those specs you said. 5 hours? Yeah, on wifi I can get up to 7 hours but on 3g connection, not even close to that. Best I can get so far with 3g all the time is 3 hours. That's my opinion anyway, why should we settle on good when it can be great. I hope the next nexus (if google still make it) would have a bigger battery. That's all.
