Cracked Camera Lens - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

My friend came to me and said he cracked the lens on his camera, and as the resident tech guru I figured I would help him out...how would one go about doing this, and will his warranty/Insurance be void if i fix it?

warranty will be voided. youd have to pull it apart VERY CAREFULLY yourself.

It's definitely a crack and not he plastic shipping film that's on the lens? Just making sure.

Here watch this total teardown video

You could, but do you want to be that person that complains about a scratch on their unprotected phone? Unless you had it in some kind of a case of course
I have read about other people also having scratches but it not affecting the pictures/videos being taken. Do you also get similar results?
Why would you raise hell at Best Buy to get a replacement due to damage that you caused? Even if you didn't directly cause it, scratches are normal wear and tear, and are not covered under warranty.
That being said, I ran over my EVO with my car, smashed it to bits, thinking about going to my Sprint Corporate rep and raising hell for a replacement. LOL, I kid... I kid!
u ****ed!........
The lens on mine somehow cracked in the first week and I had no idea how it happened. I was able to get a replacement directly from htc.

unless you see it when youre taking a picture, it shouldnt affect it. the lens is too close to the glass to have it show up, unless it refracts light into the lens.
the lens cant focus for that short of a distance.
if you can get it replaced, do it, but i dont think it should be too serious.
i would try and get a replacement...
Mine has a tiny scratch too. When I bought a case I made sure to get one that would keep the lens off the table when I lay it down.
The good news is it shouldn't be an issue for your pictures. I'm a photography nerd and there are is a fair bit of information on the web supporting this if you care to look it up, but it would take a very significant scratch to cause any change to your pictures.
There are some variables that determine if something will show up or not, but I have seen an extreme example of someone rubber banding a pencil across the front of an SLR camera lens, and you could still see the entire image, it was just a little darker. Light bends.

me too!!! it just came out of nowhere

London, UK - Anyone that can replace the GLASS ONLY on an S3? (NOT the whole LCD)

Please, no posts saying it cannot be done, it can.
If you do this as a service and are in or around London, please reply or PM me.
My S3 is "Amber Brown" (Unique to Phones4U I think) but I do not care if the replacement part is not this colour.
Cheers!
Heat gun and steady hand is all that's needed. Good luck.

You can normally get it done by a Samsung Service Centre.
http://www.samsung.com/uk/servicelocator/ find it here. They should quote you a price. Cheers.

Yeah, I saw that from the video, and I am not too scared to mess with phones generally, but I am a little clumsy and as it is a screen, any slip of the knife would be catastrophic.(Plus I had a penknife close on me not so long ago, badly cutting my finger and knives still freak me out a bit)
Would happily pay someone £50 to do this for me, but no way I am paying £200 to replace a perfectly good LCD.

I did ask in the samsung centre in Tottenham Court Road and they seemed to think that the LCD needed replacing too, maybe I should try some more Samsung service centres because keeping the warranty would be nice as it is only a week old

No service center will replace the glass, they all change the whole screen.
I advice keeping the warranty and paying the 200, you won't regret it.
People that changed the glass (including my friend) all had it perfect, then it started lifting an air bubbles covered some parts of the screen, i know others that cracked the actual LCD when trying to change the glass.
The glass can be replaced easily. I've done it on my s3 and I can tell you that geting the broken glass off is a piece of cake. Just use a heat gun and a few guitar picks, work arround the edges and make sure that you maintain the screen hot, heating it up with the heat gun so that the adhesive is warm and softened the whole time.
The glass itself is made out of two layers, first layer is the transparent glass and under the glass there is a plastic layer that gives the glass its color.you want to stick the guitar pick under the second layer, stick a half of the pick under the glass and start applying preasure on the part of the pick that sticks out of the glass. Push the pick down, towards the table and the glass will start to get off. Use multiple guitar picks on multiple parts of the glass to make sure you dont brake the screen.
The hardest part of reinstalling the glass is getting it on without any dust between the lcd and the glass. Use the 3M adhesive sticke (ebay) precisely cut for the s3 and clean the adhesive on the housing and the LCD with which the original glass was glued. That's it, good luck!
Sorry mate, wish I could help. Good luck getting it replaced!

Next best option ...
I have found someone in the UK who offers this as a service, but he also offers an international service
ebay link:

His YouTube vid:

I have no experience of using ebay for repair services which require sending the device off though, so I am cautious here. Am investigating if ebay offer any cover for scams etc.
I will post back here with my experiences.
hey guys anyone found a way to remove lcd from frame on Samsung s3
Think you heart the front lightly and get a tool to lift it out, then use a credit card to scrape underneath

Smashed glass cover off rear camera.

Sooo.. boxing day beers were flowing. . I got slightly intoxicated. . Woke up and tried skyping with relatives. Which at this point I realised I'd smashed the lens cover on my s3! Gutted ain't the word,
Any ways to cut a long story short.. what are my options now? Can u buy complete camera and lense cover packages? Do I need just the lens cover? Why doesn't it focus?
If you can advise me on what to do now i would be very grateful Thanks.

For your problem you will need something like this ->> http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Original-CAM...953710?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item416b1d41ae
And if you say it doesn't focus at all , camera might be damaged... but you should check it better before considering a replace.
Take care.

Camera and dust

Hey guys, I'd like to know if any of you have some accumulated dust particles around the camera lens, if so, with what can we remove those particles safely.
Thanks.

if the dust is around it then use a tissue to clean if inside or outside the bezel use a tooth stick if its inside the lens then a simple no

Thanks for taking the time to show me that! That's crazy that something like this would require a new camera altogether. I have the manufacture's warranty. I suppose I could take it to AT&T and deal with them.
What is this SAT you are speaking of?

[Q] ATT Users - Camera film?

For those of you that bought through ATT, did you have the film over your camera? I swear I've tried and tried and there's no film on mine. Since ATT replaced the packaging and main screen film I was wondering if maybe they removed the film over the camera too.
Maybe. Some reps are stupid. Somebody said that LG said not to take it off. If a rep did it go exchange it and use the 'somebody didn't RTFM!' on them. Hate buying my phones in store. They open your phone and don't treat it like it's theirs. They treat it like they stole it.
I got mine from a b&m location, and I have a film on mine.
Bought mine from at&t, it had the film on it but I took it off. Why would lg say not to take it off?
Mine is from AT&T...still have the film on.

Run your finger across the lens...you will feel the lip if it's still on. It has holes where the actual lenses and flash are but covers the rest of the glass.
Hope this helps.

Camera glass is very brittle, and prone to breaking. Keeping it on helps with protecting, and its cut out to keep the lenses unobstructed.
