[Q] Battery Icon - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I'm new to theming and trying to start simple: changing the battery icon. I used a drag and drop method to update the .png files. Still, no matter what I do I see the stock icons! I'm on shabby's kernel, deodexed mdl stock rom. Tried wiping caches and fixing permissions. Tried root exploring to drop the new apks, and tried reflashing the rom with the updated icons. All fail. I found icons in framework-res(stat_battery) and systemUI(ic_qs_battery). None of those changes have stuck. Can someone point me in the right direction? Wondering how it even knows where to get the stock icons since I replaced them all(I think). In rom toolbox, I see the icons I created as though they are installed. Just need to get them to the notification bar. Are there more places where the battery icons sit?

I'm confused on what "(ic_qs_battery) is. But anyways, assuming you did change the ones in SystemUI/res/drawable-xxhdpi correct?

The ic_qs was in systemUI drawable-hdpi. Didn't notice the xxhdpi. I'll swap 'em when I get the chance. Thanks a ton!

first boot will take a bit.
This is a brand new rom ive been working on for the last few days. Based on newest i9000 froyo release UGJK3 (build date 11/18) and tweaked from there.

-haptic feedback works on ALL buttons
-OC/UV support-voltage control app installed to /data/app
-BLN added and required lights.so lib added to /data/app
-apps and framework deodexed and optimized
-zipaligned

-Big APN file for instant inernet/mms access
-ad-blocking
-AOSP themed lockscreen
-HSUPA enabled -comes with UGJK3 modem(no need to do anything crazy to get 850 working-this modem works as is)

-comes with SWYPE, dark Droid X multitouch keyboard, and samsung keyboard
-Launcher Pro and TWlauncher included in /system/app
it seems like Samsung took some advice from gtg with the twlauncher(never seen the stock launcher this fast or smooth)
-removed some junk apps
-added
voltage control 2.0
cyanogen MMS (switch background color-white/black)
updated maps and youtube
flash player will auto-install

When you apply your lagfix, choose option one when prompted "backup AND restore"
Install Instructions:
as always, its best to flash to stock JF6 with the odin one click downloader.
copy this rom to your internal sd card, and after flashing stock. flash this through Clockwork Recovery. thats it. no need to do anything with the jg8 modem or anything like that.
on first flash, all=ext4 is enabled by default-if you want to use something else, select go back to recovery then go to the lagfix options and enable whatever you want. when your prompted with the options about backing up, i suggest choosing option 1. this will do a backup and restore so you will not lose any apps(the other options you will lose the apps in /data)
credits:

Been looking forward to this.
Thanks, I'll try it tonight.

i hadn't planned on it, but it looks like i'll be flashing today
sweet! downloading and flashing @ work, excited to test.
I couldnt apply lag fix right away had to reboot first ... BUT it did tell me my configs changed ???? ... I chose option 1 and noticed it set up like this
ext4
rfs
ext4

?????
booting up was about 2 minutes on android logo
reboot to recovery then fix it to no rfs advanced ... ( all jfs )
looking good I previously dropped this rom because of modem giving me issue
will set my stuff and report back if needed .
PS why is the Fm app always in your rom ? do you hope it will work at one point ?
looks great yay launcher pro included
you few that download already, here is a better videoplayer.apk. it doesnt fix the problem, but at least youll be able to view your recorded videos from /sdcard-dcim-camera. still looking at problem and trying to find a fix.
from this point on this video player is included with the rom.(reuploaded)

some people have said if that app is removed it can cause problems. if you dont like it, remove it from /system/app.
first boot will take a while as it zipaligns and deodexes.
and btw this rom has nothing in common with my other di11is darkyy rom except my theme. this is my own base.
Ive been running your darky rom 2.0.1 for a day with the jk3 modem. Downloading now to check out the CM mms. I hope its the one with the notification vibration types like multiple long.

thx bro. was planning on reflashing myself to verify.
My home button didnt work either, not sure about lock screen. Flashing back to stock now.
My home button worked fine. hmmm, also I can confirm the video player.apk in the first post for us couple who downloaded early is letting me play video. But just as stated, can only open it from file manager to view.
great rom so far, its fast. Yes, I did run benchmarks, not that they really matter anymore. can notice the difference in speed when deleting widgets, open anything. It screams, props di11igaf, awesomely quick rom.

just downloaded my own file, reflashed to stock put the downloaded file on my sd and flashed again with no probs. first thing i did though was apply lagfix and when the backup and restore options pop up make sure you choose the first option to backup and restore all data.
let me know if you do reflash this if you have the same problem.

preciate it, will try later. problem probably because i apply lagfix "without backup and restore."
ahh ya i bet thats why. not sure why it really would matter(since the problem your describing would be an android.policy.jar problem) but im gonna try it that way and see if it makes a difference. thats the only thing different that we did though.
also i think if you apply the lagfix that way, any apps in the rom that are in /data/app by default will not be restored-at least this has happened to me in the past and why now i always do a backup and restore.
I did a yes without backup and restore, and the home button ain't workin.

How do I Transfer a Downloaded Zip File to the SD Card?

I just downloaded the smooth sense download to my Evo. I need to move it to my SD card before unzipping it, etc.
I did this before without making sure the download is on my sd card, and I went into a Boot Loop.
I did a reboot and followed all instructions regarding un zipping here >
http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/10/how-to-add-percentage-to-htc-evo-taskbar-battery-icon.html
and then I went into a Boot Loop again. I finally just re flashed the ROM that I backed up before trying the smooth sense zip. All is well but i would like to try agin.
Any help is appreciated.
Oh. I also have ROM Manager installed.
I would like to buy the Premium version to support the Developer But I don't see an option to purchase from the free version app.

Thanks for the above info because i was about to go into a Boot Loop
I am using the Stock ROM.
Originally I was going to download the circular battery indicator, until I came across the above.
I may just download the circular indicator, but I was trying avoid battery drain if any with the circular icon, and taking up space up in the task bar.
Which Custom ROM would you guys suggest before I start searching that also.
I was searching 2 hours about the sd transfer issue, but could not find any answers which is why I posted the question here.
Btw, how do I transfer Zip files to the SD card. if the smooth battery Zip was supported by 3.7 would I then have an option to do so?
Thanks
If you asking how to get the file to your phone, I don't mess with usb transfers anymore. I put the file in my dropbox on the pc, then use the dropbox app on my phone to transfer it to the sd card. I keep all my roms, kernals and mods on dropbox. Also, titanium backup now sends my backups there as well. Check it out at http://db.tt/zaSKX4L if you don't already have it.
Dropbox is great for that sort of thing like Phily said. If you want to use usb transfer then connect your phone to your computer with the usb cable. Set your phone to disk drive and it'll appear as a drive under my compter. Then cut/copy + paste the file onto your sd card.
As far as roms go. I use Mikforyo 4.4. Myns 2.2 rls 5 is good as well. Depends on what you want and the look you want. Spend a day or two reading the dev section and checking out roms to find out what you like. My guess is you might end up flashing 2,3 or 4 roms before you find out what you like.

Thanks for the informative and quick info
I will definitely check the Dropbox info out and download it. Also i will look into the diff ROMS available.
For now, I may download the circular battery app until I find a ROM with that as a feature.
I am happy I got out of the Boot Loop though. I got worried for a while.
It was a learning curve, but I got it done.
Edit:
I cannot open up the app after downloading. The circular battery indicator is in apk format.
"Cannot Open File" is displayed ?
i'd just flash a new rom. there are so many fantastic ones out there, based off sense.
there's myn's warm twopointtwo. highly themed to look amazing. very fast and slick. smooth as butter.
there's caulkin's evio 2. very very very fast. very tweaked. very optomized. great rom. also lightly themed to not look as fugly as sense.
also, ava-froyo is nice. very tweaked. this dude knos his java.

Click on it in root explorer. That will usually install apks.
For the apk thing, is it framework-res.apk? This is an exception. It holds all the images and some scripts for android systems, and needs to be installed to a separate partition.

I am not sure but will find out and let you know.
Here is the link, but I may pass due to the taking up of space on my task bar. I'm Rooted so I'll find a ROM as suggested with a percentage in the existing battery icon.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8639993
yep, those files are meant to be placed in the framework-res.apk (or are already in a linked one) you need to push it to /system/framework/ while in recovery mode. i can make you a flashable this weekend if you want.
edit: never mind its just an app, but i can make it replace the battery percent you have now if you want. it'll be the first apk other than the framework-res.apk i have completely decompiled, but i am sure i can do it.

I would appreciate that.
I assume i can always delete it and get the regular battery icon back if I want to.
Plus if I download a custom ROM, it'll probably be included in it, but until then, if you can, I'd appreciate it as I'd like to see how it works.
Thanks for your help
Edit:
I just uploaded the circular battery indicator file .apk file and transferred it to my Evo using Dropbox.
I downloaded the file. Works great!
Thanks for the offer. I much appreciate it :
so if you still want it instead of your battery icon you have now, just send me YOUR framework-res.apk and do you mind linking the file agian? thanks. i'll do it as soon as i have time (weekend)
running Cyanogen and cant seem to move files from the computer to my phone. It doesnt give me a option in the drop down menu just says USB debugging connected but not showing up on computer (although it is charging). Any idea what may be the cause?
I have both now.
Do you mean that you make it so I wouldn't have the stock battery icon, and only have the circular icon?
Optimally, I would like to have the percentage in the stock battery icon (smooth battery) but as explained, that is not supported with 3.7 if I understand that correctly?

Yeah, I don't understand how it works but for some reason whenever I got the navigation and notification bar to disappear I just flashed the softkey mod and it appeared again . Hopefully someone more technical than me will make a use of it and design a better fix.
Big thanks for sharing this mate! Using a couple of these mods now, and that Greenify app is AWESOME. No idea how I haven't heard about it before

hi shem2409,
ok. 2 things:
- that is most probably my fault but the softkey_...._black.zip also gives you a black background for both, status and navigation bar. I could have been more descriptive in my post... sorry =)
- Ticklefish's Black status+ notification bar mod should give you in addition this:
Ticklefish said:
I've also changed the background of the toggles on the notifications screen to black as well. Looks nice, huh?
Click to collapse
but since both mods change SystemUI.apk they are going to overwrite each other. and if you flash the softkey mod, the black background of the toggles should be gone? can you confirm that? (the bars will still be black - since you flashed the softkey_black.zip)
and there could be a problem when doing mine and ticklefishs mod in the opposite order: I've put the ".odex file" into the SystemUI.apk, so it runs with odexed and deodexed roms - but it deletes the SystemUI.odex during installation (this is needed so the one from inside the apk is taken by android). Since ticklefish's mod does not have that "odex file" included (it's actually "classes.dex" when it's inside an apk), it will not work if you install his mod after the softkey mod...
so as far as I can tell from here (I haven't tried it out - just have looked at the files), step 5 is overwriting the changes made in step 4.
cheers and thanks for the video tutorial!
If you were to flash smaller soft keys, would games and apps scale correctly or would the image just be stretched? So right now if the soft keys occupy 100 pixels in height, and was changed to 50, would games use the extra pixels? Would it be stretched to fit or would it run at a higher resolution? Or would there be a dead space?

I checked in a couple of games and the bar remains smaller in the games, so I guess the game is stretched to fit the extra screen space.

and there could be a problem when doing mine and ticklefishs mod in the opposite order: I've put the ".odex file" into the SystemUI.apk, so it runs with odexed and deodexed roms - but it deletes the SystemUI.odex during installation (this is needed so the one from inside the apk is taken by android).

I have modified the information in my post to account for what you thought me. Thank a lot for that. Tbh I always flashed one after the other and never even checked that flashing small softkeys on their own would do the job.

After TWRP backup I would install, Titanium backup, and do a backup of all the apps and settings, then install an optimised ROM, then 4 and 5 are covered in most cases.

If someone is on locked bootloader there is a limited number of ROMs available at the moment and tbh I haven't found one with smaller softkeys yet. As far as I am concerned the only one for locked bootloader available is the one in the link under my video. I could be wrong though.
Well, flash the smaller keys separately.
I have added the new MOD to add a background to the notification bar to the list.
11) Add a background to your notification bar (one of my favourites now)

[Q] [ROM] AOKP rom does not have Quick Settings?

Need some help with this AOKP Rom. Downloaded and installed the latest one 06.30.2013 version. Along with a few other custom roms, the Quick Settings panel does not show those typical tiles anymore when pulled down, even before and after the adjustments in the Settings Menu. Is there a special pulling gesture to have them displayed as stock 4.2.2 Jelly Bean?
What does it show instead of the "typical tiles"?
Try pulling it down with 2 fingers.

Both fingers or one still yield:
EMERGENCY CALL ONLY on top middle.
Date and Time on top left corner.
Current User Icon on top right corner. (Tapped this icon and nothing shows) I did not disable any toggle so there must be at least a few to show up. But there is nothing showing in many attempts, for a few custom ROMs including this one too.

Sounds like it is quick settings but there are no toggles added. Just go into rom control and find the option to add them.

For AOKP specifically, I went to SETTINGS, then ROM Control, then Toggles. Toggle Setup was one of the options under the Toggles submenu. I tried to add a bunch of toggles just to make sure, then rebooted the phone. STILL NOTHING SHOWED UP after rebooting. I think I'm missing something, as about 4 or 5 favorite ROMs are like this. What do you think is the problem?
I wiped dalvik, cache, and data just before I install any ROM. I have no custom kernels installed either (I believe).

Sounds like your doing everything right. You shouldnt even have to reboot after adding stuff in the "Toggle setup", it should make the changes immediately. Have you tried reflashing the rom?

I didn't think it would be a major adjustment to the OS to reboot the phone, but I did anyway. In terms of reflashing the ROM, there were multiple attempts of flashing the same one or even clearing all the cache's and data to install another fresh custom ROM right away. Any of the roms that had customizable toggles failed to display the tiles once they were added/deleted to my preferences.
Here's the weird part. Whether I add or delete those toggles, I will not get them to appear as Tiles. However, those toggles will be there after I switch from Tiles to Traditional or Scrollable Traditional Icons. I guess they only can be displayed in classic icons and not Tiles, unless I go waaaaay back to my original, unrooted manufactured stock ROM? hahahahahhaha
No I they should work fine. You are changing the page to view the panels right? They don't display automaticly when you pull it down.

How do you "change the page to view the panels?" I only know one way from my stock 4.2.2 Jelly Bean - pull down with one swipe from the top and the tiles are readily set up for you there. No side swipe or no additional tappings. Though stock ROM I cannot customize my tiles, nevertheless they are there with one swipe downward.
Which custom ROMs are you guys using with this toggle feature available in tiles with just one swipe down? I might wanna try them to see what is different with my settings. I have tried both AOKP and XenonHD latest roms, and still was not able to have the toggle tiles loaded at all...at all. Just date and time on the top left corner, Current User icon on the top right, and EMERGENCY CALLS ONLY in top middle. The rest of the space below that message is clearly BLANK. I tapped on the Current User icon to see what it would lead to, but still could not get to any different page. It highlighted then quickly return to white after each tap. That's it. Nothing appears after I tapped on it.
The icon in the top right corner. (yours will be diff) CM has the option to show them on pull down if you pull down from the right corner of the screen.

Yeah, that's the icon with the Current User insignia on it. I tried tapping it. Nothing. I tried pulling it. Nothing. I tried holding it. Nothing. I tried pulling in multiple directions. Nothing. It just turns blue once I tap on it and returns black to white as I let go. It is like that for AOKP, XenonHD, Purity, and EOS custom ROMs so far. Really intriguing me right now as to why 4 custom ROMs by different teams have the same issue on my device.
Your doing full wipes and not restoring any system data? You mentioned emergency calls, do you not have a active sum card in?

Fact: there is no SIM card loaded into the slot. Phone is still new and just not ready for my sister's use. I'm setting it up as best as I could then wrapping it as a present for her birthday. You are correct for pointing out the SIM card.
I played around with the stock ROM and still found the tiles readily available on the menu, EVEN without the SIM card. Perhaps this is the case with SIM card requirement for custom ROMs?
I have TWRP as my Recovery Bootloader. Before I install any rom, I would wipe and check these 3 boxes out of the available 5: dalvik, data, and cache (no System and no USB-OTG). Then I immediately reboot the Recovery Bootloader again just to have a "fresh" loadup. Then select the Install option to find the ROM that I want to install. Then I select Reboot System. That's my normal procedure so far for this device. Am I doing this correctly?
Having no sim card doesn't matter. I flash all the time with no sim in and set it up how I want it. Are you sure your setting it up right? I also have never had an issue like this.
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda app-developers app
Did you flash the gapps? If you didn't this may be what's causing the quick settings toggle button to to work.

I always check system as well to make sure things are clean. I never reboot into bootloader just back up using the arrows and flash rom and gapps.

3 questions:
A) What is the procedure to install a fresh new ROM, besides what I described as my method?
B) What ROM are you currently using to have those tiles appearing as they should with just one swipe downward?
C) Why does "gapps" need to be installed as well to have those tiles? I thought "gapps" are those typical google apps such as Maps, GMail, Play, etc. hence the name "gapps"? So why would communication-function tiles (as my knowledge can describe) be associated with "gapps" just to have them appear on the device?

A) What you did was fine. All roms will automatically wipe the system partition while flashing.
B) Every rom.
C) Not sure, but trust me and try it out. Ive had this issue in the past and flashing the gapps fixed it.

[Q] How Do I Make Settings Into A List?

Before I updated to MF9, I had my settings as an "un-tabbed" list. Instead of the screen with four tabs and selections under each, just one long list.
I did it by editing my SecSettings.apk with info I found HERE.
Got around to doing it again after updating to MF9 from MDL, and it no longer works Everything looks exactly the same.
Has anyone done this with MF9? If so, how?
@_dan, you started the original thread, have you tried it with MF9?
I haven't even updated my rom to MF9 yet >.> been too busy with work. When I get home i'll give it a shot.

Cool. I'll be interested to see how it goes for you.
When I did it everything appeared normal. I got the usual warnings about translations, but built the apk fine. But then Settings didn't show up after reboot.
Curious. Whats your routine for recompiling the apk? I copy the original meta-info folder and androidmanifest back to the build/apk folder and recompile. This worked fine for the previous SecSettings as well as SecLauncher3 and SysteUI and framework-res.
