Hello,
Just downgraded our Nexus 7 (wifi) to stock 4.1.2 because of issues experienced with 4.2.2. Can anyone recommend a stable 4.1.2 ROM & kernel with good battery life? I was looking at Paranoid Android, but I don't know when the last 4.1.2 update was.
Problems experiencing on 4.2+:
Slow charging on AC adapter
Genrally laggy performance
Audio is a bit crackly
After playing music all night the audio sounds like an old tape player with a dying battery. Skips and slow sounding. Pausing and unpausing audio player fixes it, but annoying.
Thanks!
If you can fond it cookies and creeme and clemsyns 2ghz kernel I got benchmarks at like 8500 in quadrant

I'm curious on your first point, since using an AC charger rated for 2.1Amp I've actually watched the battery widget show it was drawing in upward to 1.8A when charging (it gets lower the closer it gets to 100%). So I'm wondering if it's more the charger issue there (the one that ships with N7 supposed to be a 2Amp charger).
Far as the second one, I think it depends, I haven't had any laggy experiences using the 4.2.2 rom in my signature.
Audio... can't say I had crackly issues, but I haven't played with it that heavily in terms of audio playback.
Course none of this answers your initial question.

These types of threads are not allowed on XDA because they lead to opinionated and subjective replies. Plus the fact that people get sick of seeing "what is best rom?" type threads all the time.
If you want that sort of thing go read here or try roms and find whats best for you.
Thread class @TheATHEiST summed it up very well.
These types of threads are just not aloud on XDA as a best ROM is down to your own taste and if you ask people many will give different views which will just result in arguments.
Your best bet is to just try a range of ROMs yourself to find out which you feel is best for you.

Hi all,
for the last couple of days i've been thinking about giving CM7 a try. i've only ever used stock based roms so far and just wanted to hear peoples thoughts on the comparisons between CM7 and stock SE roms and what sort of experiences people have had with CM7.
many thanks
tom
basically both are ok but if you want the most gamepad compatibility stick with the stock SE firmware as CM7 tends to have more issues

I really like cm7 but not being able to play ea games or gameloft games with touchpads on cm7 was a deal breaker for me.

So would you reckon that its not worth putting on given that i'll lose the features of the phone that were the main reason for me getting it in the first place mate?

Yeah thats the conclution i came too, on the other hand, if you don't game that much, CM7 is super fast and has some great features!

It's not that dramatic, you can keep playing emulators and many current games, without any issue. It's a bummer for Gameloft and EA games though.
i like stock more because touchpads are not fully working on cm7
thanks everyone, been reading thru some of the posts on the cm7 thread and people seem to have random glitches that, although they can also happen on stock, have swayed me towards sticking with stock firmwares. add to that the possibility that the touchpads will be iffy at best. again, thanks to everyone who took the time to reply and offer their views on the subject
tom
p.s. the leaked ics rom had nothing to do with what i decided on. honest guv
Interesting thread.
I was going to switch over to a custom rom but this has kind of put me off.
Is this just for CM7? (regarding controls)
I have this phone only because of the controls, but feel like I'm not getting the best out of it with the stock rom. What rom should I be looking at if any?
Thanks!
I got fed up with the amount of bloatware and things I never used running in the background, so I gave the FreeXperia PROJECT rom a go, so far I'm loving it.
The only issue is the touchpads BUT there are games that have that driver built in (Age of Zombies, THE DEAD: Chapter One), apart from GTA3 I've yet to find a game I like that uses them (Dead Space and Fifa not my cup of tea).
I mainly use FPse (touchpads not needed) and have truly fallen in love with my Play.
Each to there own though
I just got CM7 FXP054 fully working, and overclocked to 1.6GHz, on my r800x last night. The touchpads don't work on GTA III, but do work every other game I play. I'm loving it and I'm getting suprisingly great battery life. I still wish r800x users had more roms and kernels to choose from.
the touch pads in gta3, the left one changes the radio station and the right one moves your aiming when your zoomed in the sniper rifle, so they are pretty useless, would be nice if you could move the camera or look behind, maybe steer.
ive been thinking about flashing since i want to overclock to improve gta3 and just have a basic functions, never tried CM before, does doom kernel have working touchpads?

I tried GTA 3 while on CM7 and it didn't even recognise when the control pad was slid out thus forcing you to use on screen controls, may have been fixed in recent builds though, really hope that touchpads get fixed asap, as soon as they do, CM7 is my daily driver forever!
This is with FXP054
There are things about CM7 that I love: the non-sony themes throughout, customisation options built into the ROM, custom kernel (could NOT get custom kernel working on my stock ROM) AND MY BELOVED CRT LOCK ANIMATION
There were three issues for me though that stop me from using CM7:
1. Battery life is atrocious! I can actually see the battery percentage dropping during normal use, nothing out of the ordinary running and it just drains, from 15 minutes of facebook, 10 minutes of twitter, 1 hour of watching shows with Moboplayer the battery had 20% left from a full charge 4 hours ago. With stock ROM the battery will be about 65% after all that (daily routine)
2. Sound output just sucks. I plug the phone into my car stereo for my drive to/from work, no matter how much I play with the equaliser and all of the sound settings audio playback sounds bad. The bass is distorted and it's a lot quieter than stock ROM. I experienced this same sound output phenomenon with a different handset running CM7 so I think it's a CM issue
3. Automatic screen brightness doesn't seem to work at all

The only problem of these that I'm experiencing is the last one. The auto-brightness is all over the place. My battery life is a little bit less but not enough to bother me, and I'm guessing that's from my overclock.
I started using CyanogenMod7 in Febuary last year. When I got my Play, I messed around with Stock ROM, and while it was slick, bloatware free and fast, and I was impressed, it lacked CM's little tweaks I had to have. The dodgy touchpad support is a nuiscance, but a minor one.

Noone besides you is able to. I gave the ROM you claim works with these games a try, and it didn't work at all for me.
I choose CM7 over stock since I don't play any games that are broken on CM. Would be nice if GTAIII worked, but it doesn't work well with stock, so I can give up that ghost until Rockstar better supports our device.
Just curious, can the Dinc play 24bit 96khz audio (or 192khz even)?
My failpod cannot, and when i upgrade i was going to turn my phone into a iTouch basically. So i want to make sure it can play my files.
I have never thought about it. Good question.
I really doubt the stock player does anything of the sort, as the mass population appears to want higher compression and lower quality.
I just looked at Neutron Music Player in the market (evaluation trial). It seems to do 96k, but does not mention 192k (in FAQ on website). I poked around the forum a bit... it sounds like high frequency sampling will burn through the battery really fast... and that makes sense. For high frequency sampling, it says you need a 1 ghz processor. Therefore the Dinc should be able to do it.
But, I've never used the app and I don't know what I'm talking about... this is just what I read in the last couple of mintues.

Not to concerned about battery life as i have the extended battery, and once i have my new phone (which is when this will be my dedicated itouch) i plan on building either a GB rom from Cyanogen, Or a ICS rom from AOKP without phone capabilities. should help battery life when it's not always searching for towers

Will you incorporate the Wifi only script found in the development section?
NeutronMp or Vlc does!

I thought I'd take the opportunity to share my personal Rom recent experience. I would obviously like to know if others have found the same or if you violently disagree!
The best place to be right now I think is:
s-off (so you can flash whatever you want)
Rooted (so you can back up apps & data freely)
Specifically:
HHboot 1.56 (latest firmware)
ARHD 31.6 Android 4.3 & Sense 5.5) with no mods
Latest radio
I have tried Maximus 30.0 & AHRD 40.3 and found they offered no features/benefits advantage over 31.6 and have a couple of annoying bugs. Battery life is a little worse than 31.6
I have also tried odexed GPE 4.4 with the new launcher. When ART is enabled you can feel the phone is snappier, but that's it. I don't really want to use Google Now. Battery life is worse than sense Roms.
cool story bro
I'm using insertcoin right now and my battery is far more better than any other base I have tried including cm ones. I'm getting over 19h usage with 3h+ screen on time and 3-4h of music through poweramp. Performance is pretty much the same as earlier versions.
I can easily get 13+ hours and about 30% left when I get home with moderate usage on GE 4.4.

Same here.
There aren't many performance improvements and DND shuts off the media volume too which I don't particularly like (I quite often use DND to ignore calls and texts while I game) but other than that, I've got the best battery I've ever seen on a stock ROM.
Going to put EX on and do my undervolt + CPU/GPU O/C and have even better battery life.
I don't really miss ART. I have it on my Nexus 7 2013 and its got some issues.

Just wondering what Rom people are running who are concerned with battery life. I listen to music and podcasts quite often. Right now I'm using Dan's google edition rom and I love the layout and speed but I noticed my phone getting quite warm and I'm concerned.

Strange, that ROM behaved well for me. Any chance you have an misbehaving app?
Besides Dan's GE ROM, I've had great luck w/ Slimrom.
Another idea is that beside the rom, try using ktoonsez's kernel (if you're not already). With the tweaker app that comes with it you can load a bunch of profiles to turn your phone into a battery saving miser or power hungry gaming machine and everything in between.
(During the day I don't use my phone much and load a battery saving profile then at night switch to performance. While I charge the phone every day, I could definitely go at least two.. maybe more.)
iBASTiD' Mapleleaf rom works well also although I can't tell which phone you have or where your from. His rom is basically stock 4.4.2 with a non stock kernel (Adam's) In the addon section he provides a flashable file to remove the standard samsung apps if you like it a little skinnier.... I have been running it for a couple of days now and it is solid...
Forgot to mention... it does apps2sd also...
There isn't a "best" rom, but with that being said I love Vanir for the nightly updates.

Not really, device tree for N9 is extremely similar to mine. Plus it currently has forced encryption.
Installed latest nightly with ElementalX kernel and everything looks good. I like the Expanded Desktop view to maximize viewing screen. Moreover, the options on launcher to show big icons is a plus.
What gapps do they recommend?
Try this version of Gapps http://forum.xda-developers.com/paranoid-android/general/gapps-official-to-date-pa-google-apps-t2943900

How's the performance of CM12 compared to stock? It made a HUGE difference on the 2012 Nexus 7, so curious if the same on the N9.
Yes, I am also interested to know about the performance and, especially, battery life benefits of CM12 on our Nexus 9. I am refraining from rooting my 5.0.1 stock for the moment hoping that 5.1 finally adresses the governor "issue" in order to get better battery life and less hiccups out of this thing while browsing, but if CM12 delivers already, I might just go all the way and install it right now.

There are sound bugs that the clicking volume like keyboard can't be lowered. Charging is very slow. Performance is comparable or slightly slower than stock Rom.

this,right here.
The charging isnt even just slow, its eratic honestly. if i use a 1.2 amp charger it takes over 13 hours to charge. using a 1.8 amp one reduces it to around 8 hours.
Its stable and all, but the charging issue, thats the reason i've decided to go back to stock rom.
