[Q] N10 Menu Question - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This may be a dumb question but I'm new to the N10 and tablets and can't find the answer.
How come sometimes I can't get a menu to come up? For instance when I am in my launcher (Nova right now but it was the same on chameleon and others) I can't get into the launcher settings. Nova has a out-of-date 3 dot menu button that works around it but other apps don't.
Also in eye in the sky weather I can't access settings to change from C to F for the units. On my phonemic just hit the menu button and I'm there.
I'm on rootbox if that helps but I ran into the same thing when I was on stock.
I'm sure this is user error on my part but any help would be appreciated.

Not sure about nova. But with eye in the sky, the menu button is in the top right on the action bar. Its using the 4.0+ api so the menu button doesn't appear.

This is driving me nuts...there must be something I'm missing. I have no menu in anything that should have one.

you did a full wipe when you installed?
Edit 1. I think I figured it out you need to go to aokp settings > General UI and make sure that Show Menu UI Overflow is checked then restart your tablet and it shoud reappear.

This'll enable it for sure- I did the same thing on Rootbox when I put it on my tab.

what launcher are you using? ...
you need to use your launcher menu> First you may need to long press the phone , contacts and message apps to bring them to the desktop, than use edit to place them in the Dock ( will depend on launcher and settings will vary according to their menu)
If too confusing just download a different launcher from play store and use it
This is stock Touchwiz, right? Looks like it, so I'll assume so...
Go into Applications.
You should see the icons for Phone/Contacts/Applications along with your other apps.
Press the menu button, and click edit. Now you should be able to move the icons around.
Drag the phone/contacts/messages icon down to the dock. It should drop there, and then you'll have your shortcuts back.

Stock Android = No Popup Menu?

Howdy,
This may be a dumb question but is there no contextual menu in stock Android? I know that many apps have the icon that is three vertical dots but on my Note 2 I can bring up a menu in any app by pressing the the menu nav button. I know that's a Samsung button, but is that entire pop up menu feature not in stock? I am sort of lost without it. For example, I can't find My Apps on the Play Store. On my Note 2 its listed in the pop up menu. On my Nexus 7.... I have no idea. I feel like I've looked everywhere. The three dot menu doesn't list it.
Thanks

OK I found my apps (tap little download icon) but still wondering in general. That pop up menu is really handy.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
The three dots will come up in the bottom right corner when an older app still needs it. Overflow actions are being moved to the actionbar for devices without a hardware menu button. I recommend getting used to apps having the button on the action bar. It makes it much easier to know when there are available overflow options.
Sent from my Nexus 7 2013 using xda premium
The problem with the menu button is that it was always there, whether it did anything or not. It was impossible to know if you could bring up a menu without trying it on each screen.
Exactly. That's why I am glad google is phasing it out.
Sent from my Nexus 7 2013 using xda premium
Custom ROMs, you can make a permanent menu button. Mostly goes unused though.

OK, thanks guys. I will learn to live without it.

Um.. First off, on tablet sized devices the Play store has a dedicated Download/My Apps button at the top. Second, my Nexus 7 (OG) on 4.3 has the overflow button in the top-right corner.. Yours does not??

[REQ] Remove 3 Dot Overflow in 4.3 Roms

Hi everyone,
Since I use a menu button in my navbar, I was wondering if there was a mod, that I could flash to remove the 3 dot menu. If there are none, I am willing to do it myself and have tried the following methods but they don't work for me. So if anyone knows of a mod or a guide, that would be great:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297692
The above link was the only one I could find, the rest mostly relate to HTC One threads.
Rom: Vanir Nighlty, Android 4.3 (AOSP Base)
EDIT 1: Here are the steps I tried:
To remove 3-dot menu:
Decompile your framework-res.apk
Go to values folder
Open bools.xml
Search for
<bool name="config_showNavigationBar">true</bool>
and change it to
<bool name="config_showNavigationBar">false</bool>
Recompile your framework-res.apk
I also made sure to sign the apk and zipalign it before putting it in a flashable zip
One thing I also tried, it was a long shot & it didn't work but I decompiled the framework of an MIUI rom since they have it enabled, and tried taking a few things from there but it didn't work
EDIT 2: I have already tried editing the build prop with a line from a HTC thread but it didn't work (phone wouldn't turn on)
Also, if anyone knows where menu-related stuff is within framework res that would be great because that would be a good place to test. (That's if the solution lies within framework res)
EDIT 3: Update: AOKP unofficial 14th September (4.3) still has the bug
Updated post with screenshots

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that the overflow menus you are referring to is coded into the app and not really dependent on anything else. Meaning that it is part of the app itself and not something the OS shows. Isn't that what Google's android interface guidelines suggests?

I'm not a dev or app developer so I can't really comment on that. But I do know that some roms do have this feature on 4.3, it's just that it it doesn't work.
So im pretty sure the answer lies within the rom itself, not the apps maybe. Although im not even sure if the solution lies within framework res, it could be system ui or even at source, in git, which would make it out of my hands
I know that there are roms that can add the menus button permanently to the nav bar (PA can do this) but I have never seen one get rid of the menu overflow button within any apps themselves. Even back to 4.2 roms I never saw that type of behavior.
In fact now that I think about it when I still had my GS3 which has a physical menu button there still was the menu overflow button in some apps because that is what Google's app guidelines say to do.
Edit - I think what you are seeing about the htc one is about removing the black onscreen nav bar that shows up in apps that don't use the menu overflow button on app because the htc one has hardware keys but not a menu key.

There are roms on 4.2 that can remove the 3 dot menu because I used them. All roms (Or at least most) on 4.2 based off AOKP have the feature, i used to use Rootbox rom on 4.2.2 and Xylon rom and the feature worked perfectly. But if you look now on 4.3 AOKP builds, it just doesn't work for some reason

The apps seem to know if the phone has a menu button or not.
Just throwing this out there but PAC has the overflow menu disabled by default!
If there was a way to port this to other roms I would be ecstatic!
But alas I do not know how to cherry pick commits and I have no idea where the commit is in PAC's GIT
You find me that commit and I might be able to add it and build it with a friend of mines help.

Lollipop hidden power management menu

To enable the hidden power menu follow belowmentioned instructions
go to homescreen
long press - click on widgets
drag settings widget (you will see diff options)
scroll down to find power saving
and there you will have all power saving settings including nvidia's custom settings.
Hope this helps.
I think you might mean:
Long tap on home screen, then tap Shortcuts.
(not widgets)

i had a problem with my tablet turning off every night even after a factory reset and changing the sleep option found under the battery settings menu. I assumed it just crashed a lot. In this menu the option was set to turn off after 6 hours.. this hidden menu was causing the problems.
Is this the same set of power options found at the top left of the battery stats when pressing the 3 dots?
yes. Look at the screenshot
No because it misses the app settings on th the raw above.

Choose the widget power settings itself, drag it to one of your home screens and open it. You will find a tab above related to app power settings.

No "Power Settings" widget
When I drag "Settings", there is no Power Settings option

Hah! Figured it out. I just really need to listen to directions. The screen doesn't look like it scrolls further but it does. The original instructions said to SCROLL to the option. Lol.
Thanks for your help, everybody.
Thanks for the tip

New Launcher Update is RUBBISH

The new Launcher update is a certified pain in the ass. Now you can't swipe down from any space on the homescreen to get to the Quick Settings menu. It goes to the new and totally unnecessary notification/Google/Search screen. Why the heck do I need that function when I already have it on my homescreen you Jackasses? This is a very large phone and now I have to reach (or use my other hand) all the way to the notification bar to get to Quick Settings. Worse still I can't roll back to the old version and can't disable this asinine feature. Dumb, dumb, dumb!
Hey calm down, you can change that behaviour on the launcher settings > home screen > swipe down gesture

Thanks for the info. I finally figured it out. Instead of giving us the option upfront the first thing that came up was the 5 star rating crap. To make matters worse the first trending search item was about the f*#king Kardashians!
Having them come up would p*ss me off too.

Thanks.
Also, it seems that the search function from the apps screen now points to the new search window, which is again really annoying, as I am just interested in finding apps at that point. Any idea if this can be reverted somewhere?
