[Q] Rooting prior to activation - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Just got my S4 today and haven't activated it on Sprint yet. Would it be alright to root and perform any other mods (ie hotspots mod) prior to activation or activate then root? Any guidance here would be great.

I recommend rooting after activation as Sprint will wipe your installed apps and settings.

[Q] Looking for help to enable tethering on AT&T S4 w/ 4.4.2

Hey all. I've been searching for a solution to this...but couldn't seem to find one. Maybe there's not a way. I also feel like an idiot with this S4. I know my way around the Razr Maxx pretty well.......but this Galaxy is a whole different ball of rice.
Right now my girlfriend has an S4 on AT&T with the old unlimited data plan - since she has unlimited data, AT&T won't let her tether unless she "upgrades" to a new data plan.
So here's the question - is there any way to enable Wi-Fi tethering on her S4?
It's i337, android version 4.4.2. Baseband version I337UCUFNC1.
I have seen a few threads refer to NB1, but it appears this phone has NC1?

Assuming the phone is not already rooted you will have to follow this guide to get to rooted NC1 then flash the TetherAddOn at the bottom of the guide.

UPDATED: you don't need to flash a pre-rooted ROM anymore. You can Root & Restore with TowelRoot + Safestrap + SELinux Mode changer [play story]. With NC1, Safestrap will only fully install after changing the SELinux mode to Permissive. Rerun safestrap and you're g2g without having to restore any settings, data, apps, etc.

Will the latest OTA update to Verizon S5 break FoxFi for unlimited data users?

Will the latest OTA update to Verizon S5 break FoxFi for unlimited data users? (K0T49H.G900VVRU1ANE9)
Obviously I'm talking about using FoxFi for free wifi hotspotting.
Thanks!
I came here seeking the exact same info. Currently on 4.4.2 with foxfi working.
On a related note, anyone know how to disable the auto update feature and nag screen? This is an unrooted device.

I searched everywhere and there have been no reports of FoxFi not working after the most recent update.... hope that's a good sign. but I'm still too chicken to take the chance.
FoxFi was too much of a pain in the arse for me forcing the pin code to open the lockscreen.... None of the methods in these forums worked for me to go back to swipe to un-lock.
Just root it and install the Xposed framework and the XTether module to acivate wifi hotspot. Works like a champ. I was running safestrap with Alliance ROM but I loaded it into the rom slot instead of stock slot before realizing there were issues there.
I Odined back to stock NGC and rooted / Xposed. Figured I'll leave safestrap alone until he figures out the bugz.
I froze Security policy updates SPD_v2_1402_4_1 to get rid of security nag and SDM 1.0 to disable the VZW OTA notifications with TiBu. But of course, you need root and have to purchase TiBu key to freeze apps. Small price to pay if you are going to be doing a lot of custom work on your phone though.

I have always used a 4-digit PIN to unlock my phone, even prior to using FoxFi,
so it wasn't too much trouble for me.
When I had the Galaxy Note II rooted, all I did to block OTA update was renaming
SDM.apk to SDM.bak. (as well as FWUpgrade.apk to FWUpgrade.bak)
Is it different on the Galaxy S5?
Thanks!

Same. And you might want to freeze the security policy updater also.
I'm strongly considering rooting at this point. Looks pretty simple for this phone. This is the wife's phone, didn't want to hack it up like I do my Motorolas; but we've gone through some expense to keep the unlimited plans and inadvertently losing wifi tether (though frankly we don't use that much data) would suck.
It also appears that you can root after this update by downgrading, but to get this update after root you need Odin.
I'll give it a week and decide. Thanks for the help and ideas guys.
Foxfi works with update for me with swipe to unlock. Just connected my tablet.

Not to be the stereotypical new user who totally hijacks other's threads, but I bit the bullet and rooted the wife's S5 and did Chopstix' mods. I added a hotspot toggle widget so it's now a one-touch operation with no PIN required. XPosed is a really neat architecture. This is making me hate my unrootable Maxx.
Phone is rooted on the NE9 update. And Foxfi does indeed start on that update (which is still Android 4.2.2) but is now redundant.

Virgin Mobile Developers Wanted we pay $35Month $479 for Phone

With Virgin Mobile rolling out with the Sprint Galaxy S5 for Virgin Mobile I can't see why people would pay $200 for the phone with a $75-$120 monthly bill when you can get the phone for $479 through VirginMobileUSA.com and pay no contract for $35 a month for unlimited. $45 a month for high data usage users.
Im expecting a HUGE Virgin Mobile based Community for the Samsung Galaxy S5
Really need ROM developers to roll out with a ROM specific or get a flashable .zip going to fix the potential APN settings when flashing a Sprint ROM.
I have installed a half dozen different Sprint Roms on my VM S5 with no issues. Is this necessary, would be my only question.

What was your steps...you had to change your APN and whatnot?
I haven't done anything fancy with custom ROMs. I have had no problem using the official Sprint ROMs, including an upgrade to NE5. I've mainly made sure to do nandroid backups via Philz recovery before attempting anything, just in case.
I haven't had to mess with APN settings, but they're available at Settings -> More Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names, and can be altered there manually. I've written them down so far just in case, but that's all that's been necessary.
In general, the Sprint stuff has been fine for me, and I haven't had need for anything specific to the VM version.
It might be nice if there was a backup of the original VM ROM just in case someone needs to start from scratch... but I'm not sure anything else is necessary right now. I'm not an expert on this stuff, but for this phone, there appear to be minimal differences from the contract version. Perhaps the boot animation, APNs, a couple VM apps on the phone... but that seems to be about it.

I don't know if a factory official recovery from a Sprint ROM would work or not. It would be nice to have an official VM ROM for such things.
I just made a nandroid backup immediately after flashing Philz (and rooting), and didn't have a problem recovery flashing the NE5 zip on top of things. I haven't messed with any other fancy customization stuff.
There's some discussion of VM here and there in the Sprint rooting thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2737724
I confirmed that both Sprint and VM had the same phone model number (SM-G900P) and same firmware (G900PVPU1AND2) before messing with anything. I've been fine with Philz 6.57.8 for recovery. CF-AutoRoot worked painlessly (but tripped Knox).
I tried some of the NI3 ROM stuff (which is not officially released), and had problems with services crashing, as others described as well. I reverted to the backup I made before messing with it. I wouldn't suggest wasting your time on it.
Again, I'm not one of the experts on this stuff, and don't know that a Sprint ROM would work for a full factory reset. Be careful messing with things. I'd have had problems if I didn't do a nandroid backup before messing with the unofficial NI3, for example.
For what it's worth, the current official VM ROM (NE5) appears to be at the following (remove the spaces from the links):
w w w . sammobile. com/firmwares/download/36696/G900PVPU1ANE5_G900PSPT1ANE5_VMU.zip
If you want to check it against the Sprint to see if they're 100% identical, the Sprint NE5 is here:

Never had to altar APN's either (as the other poster above said). I'm currently using MOAR 2.1 without any ill effect. I have Philz recovery as well. I updated to NE5 using the sprint version, and it did have the activation app after installing, so I'm guessing its the same rom for VM and Sprint. I'm far from 100% certain though.
getting one soon
i have one in the mail and hope to root install custom recovery and roms and such, had sprint sprint variant now am moving to the virgin mobile one hopefully i can help in some way.
guys?

No.
NK4=NK4
NE5=NE5
The latest VMU NK4 is here:

Used to be Virgin Mobile customers got low priority on the network behind Sprint customers. Not sure if it is still that way but the speeds were terrible.
Also, I'm only paying $25/month for unlimited all except data. Think unlimited everything is only about $45/month. A lot of peeps can't drop $400+ on a phone. Got my S5 for $100 right after it came out with a contract.

Virgin and Boost still get low priority on the Sprint network, granted with Sprint rolling out 1x advanced and allocating more spectrum to LTE the priority may not be as much of a problem as it was in the past (unless a ton of Sprint users are also in your area at the same time).
35 a month!? Woo! Where do I sign up!?

[Q] Rooting to Tether/Mobile Hotspot

Hello everyone, this is gonna super noob of me to post but I'm going to do it because I'm a bit confused.
I'm ok with the stock rom, I'm sure down the road some day I will install a custom rom or cyanogen mod. But for now I understand that rooting the Note 4 will trigger a change in state to show that the device had been rooted before.
I've rooted and installed custom roms on countless phones before, but the reason I make this post was because I achieved tethering/mobile hotspot by installing cyanogenmod, which came prebundled with those features enabled. I don't really want to install a custom rom, but I do want to somehow have the ability to tether/mobile hotspot without installing a custom rom. What would be the way to do that? Do I have to install an apk after rooting and if so, what would that apk be? (Using Sprint unlimited data)
TL;DR - Noob here trying find the best way to use mobile hotspot/tether without paying carrier.
Thanks for your time and sorry for such a noobish question.

if your rooted here's your best try
I use Foxfi. It doesnt need root and it does mobile wifi teather without carrier charge. I'm on verizon, not sure if it works on sprint.
Tethering and mobile hotspot just work when completely stock and un-rooted.... I guess if you get it from specific carriers they can block this function?
i'm on USA Sprint and foxfi uses the stock tether function so access to those function is denied unless you pay for it, which is why I have to root.

S5 Verizon SM-G900V Android version 5.0 question

I'm sure this has come up before but I'm wondering if there's a way to wipe out all this Verizon stuff off the phone. I have it working with rogers here in Canada but i cannot tether or send any pics or attachments with texts. Is there a way to get around this yet? Also cannot upgrade the software either.
Thanks alot.

Exactly what I also plan to do. Is there a way to go around this, especially the removing the verizon booting stuff
With root you can remove all of the verizon apps with a root system app remover app avalaible from Google play
I would do a backup in the custom recovery you used to install the rom before you remove system apps bootloops can happen
If you don't install a custom rom you can make a backup using titanium backup app avalaible from Google play
You can get root by following jrkruses ok3 root thread on xda in the verizon s5 forum as long as you are on bok3 or pbp1 firmware
To get tethering I would install a custom rom that has tethering enabled for which you will need either a unlocked bootloader or safestrap installed
Depending on if you have a 15 Samsung emmc or a 11 Toshiba emmc your bootloader may or not be unlockable to unlock your bootloader go to getex thread bootloader unlock for kk-mm in s5 verizon forum
As for boot animations idk how to help you there
Sorry to just dump all this on you if you have any questions you can just ask

Thanks for your wonderful response. I really appreciate it. My major concern is the booting and also the internet hotspot tethering. Please kindly help me with a comprehensive guide on how to go about all these.
Thanks once again.
