Hello everyone, this is gonna super noob of me to post but I'm going to do it because I'm a bit confused.
I'm ok with the stock rom, I'm sure down the road some day I will install a custom rom or cyanogen mod. But for now I understand that rooting the Note 4 will trigger a change in state to show that the device had been rooted before.
I've rooted and installed custom roms on countless phones before, but the reason I make this post was because I achieved tethering/mobile hotspot by installing cyanogenmod, which came prebundled with those features enabled. I don't really want to install a custom rom, but I do want to somehow have the ability to tether/mobile hotspot without installing a custom rom. What would be the way to do that? Do I have to install an apk after rooting and if so, what would that apk be? (Using Sprint unlimited data)
TL;DR - Noob here trying find the best way to use mobile hotspot/tether without paying carrier.
Thanks for your time and sorry for such a noobish question.

if your rooted here's your best try
I use Foxfi. It doesnt need root and it does mobile wifi teather without carrier charge. I'm on verizon, not sure if it works on sprint.
Tethering and mobile hotspot just work when completely stock and un-rooted.... I guess if you get it from specific carriers they can block this function?
i'm on USA Sprint and foxfi uses the stock tether function so access to those function is denied unless you pay for it, which is why I have to root.

First of all, wrong section. I'll move to General where it belongs.
Secondly, does your rom support net filtering? If you don't know then at least tell us what kind of rom you're using.
i apologize, i did not change rom. its stock i only rooted to access a minor overclock and tether features. last time i rooted my phone i used a different method and had a caynogen 6 something rom froyo lookalike . and the stock rom the root i did last time did it also. if i need to load a custom rom then please let me know which one is best for the features i need

Ask the developer of your rom if the kernel supports netfiltering. If it's pure stock then that's your problem.
Update! Just an fyi. I got it to work very nicely simply by adjusting the frequency in the application's settings.
Just got the s5 and got it rooted but it is my understanding we need a boot loader unclock to load custom roms?
anyway what i really want is wireless tether can someone point me in the right direction. I cant seem to find any guide

1. Your first point is slightly incorrect. We need an unlocked bootloader to load custom kernels and ROMs like CM or AOSP. We can load Touchwiz ROMs with SafeStrap and there are multiple options on this forum.
2. There are multiple ways to do wireless tethering. You can use x-tether through XPosed, use Foxfi, or load a ROM that removes the Verizon provisioning and you can just use the built in hotspot.

Sorry
I don't understand if you needs mobile hotshot or else.
Mobile hotshot is built-in and no root or extra app requires. There is Toggle mobile hotshot in quick panel or enable from setting - tethering and mobile hotspot

HI ,
is this what you are looking for ?( see screenshot )
if your mobile hotspot does not show ( mine re arrange/edited ) check screenshot and press icon ( see red arrow ) and re arrange/edit if you want to .
good luck
I had a S3 that I rooted a few years back and now have the Note 3. I am familiar with rooting and ROM's, however after all the issues I had before, I want to keep things simple. Here is what I mean. I really only want to root my phone for two main reasons. 1. Get rid of the bloatware. 2. To be able to unlock the hotspot since I have unlimited data. I currently use FoxFi but it cuts off once you reach a certain limit.
After looking around I see that there are many different ways/methods to root the phone as well as a ton of different ROMS. I wont pose the question of "What is the best ROM". All I really want to know is. 1. What is the easiest method to root the phone? 2. What ROM(s) are out there that are close to stock and do not require constant updates.
Thanks all in advance. BTW...I did do a search and was overwhelmed with all the options. I assume the easiest root for what I want would be the CF-AUTO-ROOT (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466423)

And a quick question for you....did you read the Forum Rules on posting....
Moved here as this does not belong in the Development Section.
My bad....thanks for moving this for me.
I'm no expert at Android or ROMs, but after initially rooting with towelroot flashing CM and then going back to stock 4.4.2 because of email / exchange issues, I've now rooted with CF AutoRoot and flashed the Lollipop based Echoe ROM.
Flash the latest bootloader and modem and it is a stable, close to standard, usable Touchwiz ROM, that I've been using for a month and I'm very happy with.
Hi,
Sorry I'm not very tech-savvy but did manage to root my S7. I was sad when I realized S7 was Nougat as I used FoxFi on my S6 daily. So now I have a verified rooted phone but I cannot get free tethering still. I installed quite a few (ROOT) tethering apps and they all fail even after I grant root permission.
Some help please?
Thanks,
Mark
This ROM has the ability to Wifi tether already built in. It offers several versions of debloat through an Aroma installer and is basically one of the only customizable roms we currently have.
An alternative would be to backup all your apps and personal things, then Odin flash to MM and restore apps and personals. This should allow you to flash things like Xposed.

thanks but I already rooted my phone. I don't understand though, there are so many tethering apps that say "root only" but they don't work for me. Is there a step I have to do to make those work?

You either use the hybrid Rom for tether with nougat, or go back to marshmallow. Nougat doesn't allow tethering services to activate through root with the security patches and request of the carrier I believe, with exception of the hybrid Rom for u or tmo/vzw
