Hello,
I'm having a problem with the S4.
When I plug it into the computer (Running Windows 8), the device starts charging and I can sync files with the device.
But, after 15 minutes it starts reconnecting, the USB connection just keeps disconnecting and connecting over and over again, nonestop.
But the device is still charging, only the connection to the computer stops.
Does someone know what the problem might be?

Try reinstalling Samsung drivers, try different USB cable and try different USB ports. Is it Kies that you use for syncing, or a different application? Make sure it is up to date, uninstall and then reinstall it. Can't think of anything else.

Hello,
Thanks for commeting.
I already tried reinstalling the drivers (I reinstalled Kies).
And the problem occurs not only when I use it.
It suddenly starts reconnecting, without me even touching it for the last 15 minutes.
What should I do?
try in the rear usb ports, or change the cable, if no good luck try cleaning the port of the device..

No computer detects my TyTN anymore. Not even to display the "New Hardware Found" message that I usually get when plugging the TyTN into a USB port of a computer that hasn't seen the device before. Nothing. The phone still charges and the it still knows when its plugged by the icon on the lower right corner of the screen.
I've searched the forum for this very issue, and found mostly activesync issues/solutions. I've tried them all with no success. BTW activesync works for me via bluetooth. My last resort was a hard reset. Three times... (read from one of the posts). Now I'm stuck with a TyTN with a Dopod ROM.
Has anyone experienced this problem?
I tell you, having a kick-ass phone but without a way to push the customization files into it is TORTURE.
Please help.
I had a smiliar problem when I Installed XP-MCE.
I solved it by downloading the latest Active Sync and Installing it, From there windows picked it up as a Mobile Device.

Thanks for the reply. I use ActiveSync 4.5 on Win2K, XP and XPMCE. The computers are not able to detect it at all.
Reinstall Activesync
Try reinstalling Activesync (which will uninstall the earlier install of the same or earlier version). This worked for me. I face this problem once too often coz I sync with my desktop and laptop.
try deleting the partnership on the phone and then try plugging it in, make sure all the partnerships on the phone are deleted, i had the same issue with my tytn and that solved it.
Another issue i had was that windows was detecting the device but still would not allow it to connect , so what i did there was just go into computer management (right click on my computer then click manage) and uninstall the device while it was connected then unplug and plug it back in and windows re-detected it. Also make sure you have the atest version of active sync installed.
Hope this helps
Check device manager - does it even refresh when you plug your device in?
If it does not, you may have a big problem...
Have you tried an alternate USB cable? It could be that that is shot.
Have you still got the min-USB headphones? If so, do they still work?
If they do not work either, that would suggest that the device's USB port port is shoddy...
And reality sinks in...

Yeah, I think the USB port on my TyTN is partially dead. This feels like being with Verizon and their locked phones. Sucks wet cow butt.
Oh well, I'll just learn to live with my Dopodish phone until HTC comes out with TyTN III.
Thank you all who replied.
All of a sudden my pc is not recognizing phone as a usb drive.. It was working perfectly since day one with this phone but since yesterday it wont recognize it.. And even if it does, it takes a very long time. ive treid uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling, as well as turning debugging on and off. My pc is running windows 7 64bit.. Seconded. I bought a cheap charging kit and the cable would charge but would not allow file transfer. Took it back, bought another cable and it's fine.
Either the phone is finicky about cables, or it might just require a particular type (probably USB 2.0).
I had this issue also last week. I tried another cable and it worked fine.
But now I am having issues with my usb ports in general. Now they just stop working every once in a while and I am required to restart my laptop.
Don't know if the two problems are related.
Try different USB ports. Like the ones on the back on your computer.
I've been having the same issue. I went out to Radio Shack and bought a new data cable. So far all ports on my laptop, winXP pro 32bit, and my win7 64bit desktop have not had problems.
I'm thinking that the USB cable supplied by Samsung is crap. I tested them both out on the same machine, same port; the new one worked fine, while the stock cable only gave me adb access.
I had this same exact problem. I kept thinking the phone was going bad or something. I tried the cable that came with my Epic & the one that came with my Moment, both didn't work... for some reason it worked find on a Mac though. So when I gave my mom my Moment when I got the Epic she bought an extra micro-USB cable and I decided to try that one, for some odd reason, that one worked.
Still don't know exactly what was going on but a third-party cable fixed the problem for me.
Hope this helps.
Hey all. Just got my Galaxy S4 today and I was loving everything about it until... right now. For some reason, the darn USB won't stay connected to the computer. It doesn't matter if it's simply plugged into the computer as an "installer" or as a media device. It'll constantly disconnect and reconnect itself, even when I'm not transferring any files.
It's not the my computer/USB ports, either, since I can transfer files between my HTC Thunderbolt and Nexus 7 fine. I've also tested 2 other USB cables and they all behave the same way.
Anyone know what's going on? Did I get a lemon?
No im in the same boat. Was trying ti connect in today. I reinstalled and un installed the drivers about 4 times. Tried un selecting usb debugging in developers menu. Installed kies and used the drivers from it still no good. Used 3 different usb leads. Phone will still charge from pc and even when im installing the drivers again and connect the phone it will say that your new device is ready to use but still cant access phone, it simply does not show up.
Wouldn mind was working 2 days ago fine. Same usb port and all. And the port is fine cause my old s3 still reads from the same port.

please we need help to solve this problem!
Same problem
I have also been dealing with this for a while now. I have Windows 7 64bit and I have reinstalled the drivers many times through Kies and manually. It seems like the problem is getting worse since initially I could do some file transfer through usb if i fiddled with the device (changing usb ports, unplugging it, etc). Now I am hard pressed to get it to show up on the computer through MTP at all.
This is quite annoying since I am developing an android app and I need a usb connection in order to test it. A fix would be awesome.
I just tested on my sister's laptop and it doesn't have this problem. I clicked around the phone, transferred a 10gb movie, and left it plugged in to see if there were any signs of disconnects. None whatsoever. Odd. Maybe Galaxy S4 just doesn't like something with our computers. This is quite annoying.
I have a fresh Windows 7 64-bit partition I installed the other day so I'll test it out on that and report the results later today.

im on xp(retro yeah ha ha) but just a pc i have for my phones and stuff. But i got it working again by flashing my firmware through odin and its back working. Im blaming when i rooted it that it broke but ill see if it happens again
edit: Can confirm pc is now picking up phone. I just flashed the most recent stock rom for my carrier through odin and as soon as it finished updating its prefect now. Might wait another while to root it now and wait for more devs to jump aboard for more roms

Hi
I don't know if it may help but i noticed the usb doesn't work when the phone is locked.
I did check 'stay active while charging' in dev parameters and i never got disconnected again.

Oops, missed your post. Unfortunately, it disconnects regardless of the phone's state.
My friend's S4 was doing the same thing on his desktop. Every time he would try to transfer pics the phone would disconnect after a few files.
I tried different things from reinstalling drivers to trying to only copy over a couple of files at a time, nothing worked.
Finally I plugged his phone into one of the back usb ports and transferred over 2gb with no problem and no disconnects since.
My guess is the S4 is a power hog and some usb ports just don't supply enough juice. Try plugging it in to a usb port that comes off a motherboard. Don't use the front ports or usb hubs. Hope this helps someone.

I've been trying all kinds of different combinations of USB leads, phone settings and ports all morning and was just about getting ready to start a new Olympic sport of S4 hurling when I came across this post and plugged my USB straight into the back of my machine and it finally works!! Thank you dirrtpoor for your input - a simple fix, but nevertheless it worked.:good:
I suppose it makes sense that a quad core 1.9Ghz phone would be a power hog.
It wouldn't work on my home PC whatever I tried. Front or back USB ports.
On my dads PC sometimes it would display OK and other times "usb device has malfunctioned" (didn't try the rear USB port)
On my work PC it works fine on the rear ports.
I was having the same problem a few days ago, but then I reformatted the SD card, now everything seems OK.
Even the stock gallery app works now...?!
Guys I was having the same problem. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why suddenly my S4 wasn't being recognized by my computer. I finally went into developer options and noticed a "USB Debugging - Debugging mode launches when USB is connected" was turned on. I de-selected that, connected my phone and now my computer recognizes it again. I hope that helps guys, it helped me.

This may be laughably obvious but I'm a former Apple user, which has it's own dedicated USB connector, so I forget sometimes with the Samsung S4, which has a standard (looking) micro USB connector that I need a USB cable that is enabled for syncing as well as charging...not all USB cords with micro connectors on the phone end will carry the data because I imagine Samsung has made their phone's connector require a different wiring in the cable.
I was pulling my hair out yesterday trying to figure out why the computer wouldn't see the phone..then looked at the USB cable and realized I'd plugged a non-syncing cable in. I tried the cable that came with the phone and bingo, worked like it was supposed to.
Hope this helps, sometimes it's the little things we overlook that drive us nuts.
Any way to connect in master storage with out root.

Use a different usb cable and usb port. I know it sounds stupid but there has definitely been phantom problems which were solved this way, even with something as simple as adb commands
i have same problem. trying all the way but always with the same result...
I picked up a used galaxy s4 the other day and it seems like the USB port is bad. When I try to connect it to the PC it is not recognized at all (I've tried different computer, different cord, different ports, everything) and often it seems to think that the charger is connected when it is not. Charging the phone, however, does work. I'm pretty sure this means the USB port is bad, but wanted to make sure there was nothing else I could do before I ordered a replacement board and started taking the phone apart.
Thanks!

I think my issue is different but I have that problem using google edition roms with safestrap. does the notification show on the phone when you connect it?
Have you tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them?
No notification on the phone and nothing changes in device manager upon connection. I tried to use USB tether and it says USB not connected.

It so sounds like a cheap cable..or a defective one.
I'd try a different cable/USB Port or uninstalling the drivers then plugging the phone back in and let it re-install upon reconnecting.

Yes and both try with MTP PTP nothing, even the phone does not recognize when you connect the cable from the pc, but works as a charger.
Where did you get the part? It's probably a copy or defective.

no, the original broke and stopped working
Finally solved
Finally after searching and researching I found that it was a software compatibility problem, so I found the Franco kernel (ziddey-otg-R193-JSS-CM-10262031) having the all drivers that needs for the phone to recognize the USB, now works properly with the PC and everything else.
So we know what is the problem with those new USB flex cables
I hope this will help others with same issue.
