I'm not sure I understand what you are talking about...
There is not a folder nammed 'sounds' in /system
I'm looking for the dialer sounds when you click on figures
Go to settings >sound >dial sound tone

Nevermind its not there. Im curious to where it is stored as well now. Ive gone as far as decompiling the Phone.apk and Contact.apk, and looking through all the folders.
I didnt find any ogg files. I also spent about 20 minutes going smali files which i thought would contain some answers, but still i couldnt find any references to audio files.
Is it possible that the audio is generated purely through code?
That would be surprising because every phone hasn't the same dialer key sound, right?

Maybe try checking the aosp or cm github. You might find something in the "raw" folder within the repos of the phone or contacts app.
Just giving suggestions...the folder might not even exist

I know. Im saying that you might have to go as far as downloading the source code for the phone app, looking for the file, replacing the file, and recompiling.

First you would have to find the default keyboard sound. If I am right, I think you might have to modify the system files to default to new sound rather than the original one. I dont believe you can simply swap the sounds. Second, you would have to know what the specific words with friends sound file name is to locate it and copy it.
I am not saying what your asking to do is impossible, but probably too invloved.
Under the the android forums, apps and development section, someone posted an app that they made that can change the system sounds. I haven't tried it out, but pretty sure you could do the keyboard with that app.
I noticed that Google Voice Search has a couple sound effects that occur when starting and ending a voice recording for a search.
Does anybody know how to disable that?
Nobody? The sound effects on Google Voice Search are pretty irritating to my ears. I'm guessing that I would have to go into the apk and pull the sound files?

I just tried restoring "Voice Search" from Ti Backup from a different device and I froze "Google Search". When I do that, nothing happens when clicking on the mic button.
Darn, I thought I might have had it there...
After freezing did search still work just without sounds?

You're going to have to use computer, decompile apk change some XML, change some java and delete the sounds.
... or you can use it with the volume down

what puzzles me is the fact that its such a major user experience issue and its strange that experts and developers at google havent yet thought about it??
the sound is so loud and shrilling that it spoils the entire user experience. i just have to rush to quickly turn the volume down everytime i use the voice search. GOOGLE ARE YOU LISTENING????

Can't agree with you more.
I have exactly the same feeling that the sound is too loud.

No need to install the apk, just rename the original (for backup), replace it with this one and reboot. (/system/priv-app)
Instead of silence, there are clicks... not sure why yet. Working with a friend to figure this out. The file size is also larger than the original even though the replaced wav files are the same size. I'm guessing the apk was compressed but I was under the impression that apks are just zips using no compression (store)
Also NOTE that I pulled this from my N5 and not my N7 so make a nand, backup your /sdcard, etc. etc. Try if it you want... or don't. I make zero promises.

You can use apktool to do this yourself:
First copy framework-res.apk and Velvet.apk to your computer. (Located in /system/framework and /system/priv-app respectively)
Use apktool to install the framework on your PC and then to decompile Velvet.apk. Then copy out the wav files in res/raw (there are 4 of them). Blank those files with whatever audio app you want, like Audacity, and copy them back into res/raw and recompile Velvet.apk.
Drop Velvet.apk back into /system/priv-app on your device and reboot.
It works but instead of the annoying dings and beeps you'll hear a click instead. Haven't quite figured out why this happens but it's better than the annoying sounds.

Thank you! Do I need to decompile/recompile Velvet.apk or can I use 7zip to simply replace those wav files with the apk? I'll test this later tonight.
I've done it both ways but the preferred method is to properly decompile and recompile. There are a bunch of tutorials out there showing how to do this and it's rather simple. You just need to be sure the rom you're on isn't using a custom apktool. I'm on SlimKat and had to download their custom apktool.

Out of curiosity, what is the advantage of decompiling/recompiling? I've just never done it before.
Simply because it's proper I guess? I honestly don't know the answer to that but the developers recommend it so that's good enough for me.
I know this is gonna sound pretty stupid but I can't figure out how to make custom ringtones on my Nexus 4. On my Galaxy Nexus I would just put a file of an mp3 in the ringtone folder. I'm doing the same thing but when I go to change the ringtone the file that I put in there won't appear in the default choices.

If you don't already have a folder named "Ringtones" at the root level of sdcard, create one and put your mp3 files in it. Same for "Notifications".
There is no need to use an app for this. I have 3 or 4 custom ringtones in my nexus 4 and I only put the mp3 in the ringtones folder and it works...:good:

Not sure if it makes a difference or not, but I cut my mp3 to the 30 second clip I want and then put that in my ringtone folder. It works fine for me without the need of an app.

Had no idea about the /Ringtones/ folder. Seems like Google should of had that since the beginning rather than have people randomly know this by adding a new folder
either way, rings extended is a pretty good app only 101 K. less than 1MB

Rebooting will do it... or just a little time for the mediaserver to discover it.

Maybe rebooting it's what you need
In that case rings extended is better no rebooting needed
In case you are running Linux, take a look at the following post to enable MTP mode (otherwise, you will never be able to see the existing Notification and Ringtones folders).

Guys i know this might sound dumb but can someone please tell me how do you integrate photos in the system of the phone?
As in i have a few images of another phone which i want to feed it in the phone itself (SO THAT IT DOES NOT APPEAR IN GALARY)
Like the default phone wallpapers. (Where you set a wallpaper from WALLPAPERS and not GALLERY)
And also same with the apps (Such as i want a dictionary to be in the phone even after formatting, i have the apk file but)

You already knew the answer buddy. The wallpapers are in System APK. Just like that the dictionary is in Keyboard APK.

You can put them anywhere. As long as you make a .nomedia folder in the folder you store them they won't be in the gallery.

No sorry. The no media thing is just to prevent it from being in the gallery. I don't know what the default location is but the previous poster stated it's in the system apk. You would havo to repack that with your own wallpapers to make it work I guess.

Ive seen so many posts that are old enough to be dropped but i would still love the keyboard sounds from the iphone for my phone, would anyone be able to get ahold of some or have any? i found one but the sounds were from an ipad and did not work correctly

You can rename it "KeypressStandard.ogg" and put it "/system/media/audio/ui/", remember to fix the permission to rw-r-r.
