TouchWiz still lags after removing 90% of bloatware - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I have removed almost every single thing from stock ROM and it still lags like hell. I was expecting it to be a bit faster after removing all the crap but nope, still slow as hell. It feels like we are back on gingerbread.

Then try aosp...
Everyone will have different experiences as no device is completely the same. They will all perform slightly differently thus you see dev's not coming up with a specific kernel governor, under volt, etc. for everyone. I would also try something as simple as a reboot if you haven't already. I would get heavy lag from time to time and a reboot seemed to do the trick

I want to be on cm10.1 so bad but I can't live without all the cool features that stock ROM has like the ir blaster.

Try some of the deodx'd and zipalighned roms that have some of the bloatware removed but keep everything else.
I'm on CM10.1. Works great. Don't care for IR blaster since I have have a network tv tuner with a cable card as my TV... and a bluray drive on my PC.. Nothing I miss from stock firmware except maybe S-Voice.

Is the screen throttling issue fixed on cm10.1? It's awful on stock ROM and I was hoping cm10.1 fixes that.

Well it seems better on CM10.1. Touchwiz is so aweful.

Get a custom recovery. Install Omega ROM and KT Kernel. Disable scroll cache.
It's buttery smooth and what should have came from the factory. No lag, stutter. Even the gallery is fast.

The stuttery Beast

Is it because of the JB update my S3 stutters just by pressing settings or just by pressing settingsmenu button. Everything just stutters a little bit. Opening the appdrawer, the phone stutters or is to slow for the animation.
I tried 0,5x animation, didnt get better.
What should i do?
Is the beast supposed to act like this?

You can try the leaked rom 4.1.2. It works very well with siyah 1.8 kernel or any stock 4.1.1 roms.
Just remember to full wipe before and after flashing any roms. (Just a safety procedure.)

I had some of those problems - some menus not as fast or smooth as the s3 mini in a store, the application manager crashing and stuff
- jb 4.1.1 stock unrooted - factory wipe after update from ics
So I went through and deleted all apps that I don't use, particularly apps with back ground processes like widgets (animated weather widget apps for example) and then after clearing ram as well, the application manager would work, so I went through and disabled Samsung stuff that looks unimportant
Now it all just blazes, so fast.

Revert to touch wiz and unroot

Hey everyone,
So I'm new to android and I decided to switch my i337m gs4 over to the Google edition. I'm pretty happy with it but the battery life is almost half of what touch wiz was.
I'm now wondering if there is anyway to revert my gs4 back to the original touchwiz and unroot the phone.
Sorry if this has already been answered!
Thanks

Sincerly, I think Touchwiz is better than Holo. I don't know why people want Google's Holo UI on their Touchwiz mobile. Touchwiz UI is just awesome. Full of colors, nicer interface, more performance and as he said better battery backup. Samsung device users should be proud of their mobile's UI interface.

Post your custom ROM experiences

I figured I would start a thread since I couldn't find one devoted to posting our personal experiences with ROMs for our Kindles.
I have tried 3 separate roms out thus far.
CM 10.1 (JB 4.2.2)
This was my first dive into custom roms for my first gen Kindle Fire, and it was a pretty easy transition. Really enjoyed freeing up the device by not having to have the stock Kindle firmware. Apps ran far more quickly and smoothly. After using this for a while I yearned for something faster/smoother. (probably need to get myself a higher powered device to improve on that). Somewhat missed the lack of an Amazon Video app. It's too bad Amazon has not yet developed an app for other Android devices that we can install. A minor issue (with all roms) seems to be the boot animation. It starts out stretched and in the upper right region of the screen at first and then corrects itself maybe 10 seconds later and is centered. Not a big deal of course. The only drawback for me personally with this one is CM's lack of customization.
JB 4.3 Barebones
I had read that JB 4.3 ran a bit quicker (and used more battery) than 4.2.2. I found this to be the case. Especially when using an app like Flipboard this is apparent. The boot time seemed to be a bit longer than CM 10.1, but that could very well be my perception. I did find that the build I was on seemed to give me issues on restarts. I'd restart and icons would be missing and the icon themes I was using with Apex would have to be reset. Mild annoyance that I didn't enjoy dealing with. Overall I was mildly satisfied and preferred CM 10.1 to the specific (early) JB 4.3 that I was using, despite the fact that CM ran slower.
AOKP (JB 4.2.2)
Just installed this one tonight. Coming into this, I was already a big fan of AOKP 4.2.2 as its my daily driver on my Droid Razr M. Love AOKPs customization. Anything beyond AOKP level customization is overkill for my taste. AOKP just has everything I'd need in that department. I did notice that I feel like I'm back to CM 10.1 speed which I may or may not settle on. A minor issue I found was the screen rotation glitch (which I have heard is found in few different ROMs.) It's nothing too major, but it may be enough of a nuisance to get me to switch in the future. We'll see. I do prefer AOKP 4.2.2 over CM 10.1 strictly due to AOKPs level of customization. If you are simply looking for a ROM beyond stock and not necessarily looking for great options and customization, I'd say go with CM 10.1 (If you don't have your heart set on JB 4.3, that is). But my personal favorite of the 3 would have to be AOKP. I have not used this long enough to properly test the battery life compared to CM 10.1.
I hope this helps any noobs like me who are giving flashing roms a thought. Would love to hear what you all are finding for the best speed and battery life. I'll post any updates for roms that I try in the future.
Summary:
Best Battery - CM 10.1
Best Speed - JB 4.3 Barebones
Best Customization - AOKP 4.2.2

Well just as you mention it, BAM! That's exactly what I'm experiencing now with AOKP 4.3. Lots of browser crashes and keyboard issues where it will not pop up. Rom is still a decent bit quick, but I may be looking to downgrade from JB 4.3 to something that won't have minor issues such as browser crashing. Need a good daily driver with good speed and battery life. AOKP 4.2.2 didn't have the browser crashing.

I've had my kf for about 3 months and while i haven't flashed them all i have flashed lots of them.
Unfortunately, i haven't found any rom either with or without gapps that have the low memory/ram issue.
I have done lots of searching an just plain tinkering with everything from freezing everything possible in stock roms to only having 2 user apps installed, i.e. dolphin browser and adobe flash player.
The only thing i really want to do is to be able to let my grandson and nefews/nieces watch cartoons on the net, and maybe some simple type kids games. (This way they have their own and dont mess with mine lol)
The games I've found and installed and they work fine, but the memory on this thing is just not capable of even rudimentary multitasking.
Its a damn shame too, because just an extra 50 - 100 mb of ram would make the difference.
Wish i knew how to dev a kernel id look at the big memory kernels on the gnex and see if he same principles could be applied.

ART Users - Opinions

Hi, if you've been using ART on 4.4 Roms, would you say the increase in speed is real, and have you noticed an improvement in battery life?
I tried ART yesterday and I thought it was incredibly fast, but now I wonder if it wasn't placebo.
I had to revert to Dalvik, though, because Whatsapp doesn't work in ART, but I am interested in people's opinions of ART.
No and no. Everything feels quite the same. I think it's placebo at the moment.

You dont need to rebuild applications except few cases - they will crash anyway on ART.
They just replaced JIT with AOT compilation and threw away Dalvik as its not needed in case of AOT translation anymore.
Well, not yet but they plan to do so.
After I switched to ART I had constant force closes from Gapps to the point of almost having to factory wipe from recovery.

Try odexed gapps
I think/know it is faster. (mostly in listviews)

Chrome seems faster but I'm not sure yet. The only app I had trouble with is Ti backup. I'm sure he'll release an update for it.
Does it make a difference to ART being on official Kit Kat or is it the same?
It does feel a little bit faster. It's gonna take a little while longer until we feel the real difference between ART and Dalvik.
Soon as ART ready apps start to come out, then we might have a show
So although I tried it, I went back to Dalvik for app compability reasons. I'll give it a try in a couple weeks or so.

It's hard to notice any differences in speed when using ART, I tried it on my N5 but quickly went back to Dalvik because of WhatsApp being broken,
saying that, I am trying it on my Nexus 7 now. I regularly use the app 'UberSocial' for Twitter. It has always lagged when scrolling through my timeline but I continued to use it because of functionality. After I switched to ART, it no longer lags. No placebo, I use the app frequently enough to notice and it's a huge improvement. Scrolling is WAY smoother than I've ever experienced on this app before now.
So yeah, things are looking promising for Android 5.0.

I unplug at between 5 and 7am and by the time I go to bed at night I'm usually still around 75 - 80%. Of course it runs much smoother for me than stock does and I like the customizations that come along with it as well. I tried to flash Beans last night just to check it out but for some reason it wouldn't boot so I just restored my nandroid. I'm planning on flashing Beans when I get a little more time and checking it out but for now I'm extremely pleased with Hyperdrives performance on my device.
Eclipse
Im gonna wait on Nitro and his fabulous eclipse rom, it will be awesome, right now running stock trimmed out.
Try both and see if you like either one better than stock.
I basically switch everyday cause they're both so good

Might as well do this. With SafeStrap, you can load up multiple ROMS and switch as your heart desires. Honestly, don't know why phones with unlocked bootloaders don't have a Recovery that allows ROM slots. Seems to make perfect sense so you can load up more than one ROM. Just like partitioning your hard drive and running Windows on one side and Linux on the other. You can chose what you want to use, when you want to. Cant beat it.
But to answer your question, I am running HyperDrive since version 1. Havent really tried Beans. Sure it runs just as good. I am just happy with Hyper right now.
Stock with xposed framework and modules. While i appreciate everything the dev's do, development is not far enough along to leave stock with xposed yet.
Also on stock with too many mods in xposed to count. I seriously can't see any reason to flash a rom. I'm consistently getting up to 2 days uptime and I have all the mods I could ever want.

So i struggled for the longest time why one rom on my phone would play nicer than the other , if they both use the same base.
So I formulated a theory , which can be really wrong , so take it with a grain of salt: Currently I have close to 120 user apps and wanam xposed with multiple customizations. I feel like your set is up is the reason why one rom will be buggy with poor battery life and other will be phenomenal. That is why you will find people swearing with one and hating the other. It is hard to find a perfect rom for all, since android varies tremendously due to its wonderful inherent ability to be customized.
of course you can also argue for coding, build boxes and smali skills.
which goes back to the main point, you need to try it out because compatibility between the developer's build and your set up is key to the perfect rom combination
so dont be startled if you try a rom that others rave about and it sucked on your phone , just move on and vice versa.

If you aren't using SafeStrap 3.65, you're missing out on the ability to test up to 5 ROM's at once. If you are, my apologies for misunderstanding your post.

Tried beans and didn't provide that much customization. And battery was horrendous on all of the builds for me. Hyperdrive has more customization way way way better battery for me and I'm beta testing for him.

Yes, I have the latest version of SafeStrap and I know you can flash multiple ROMs at once.
I'm shocked this thread hasn't been closed already.

I totally agree with you there. My battery life on HyperDrive is ridiculous. I can go almost two days before I need to plug my phone in. I'm very satisfied with HD and don't plan on switching anytime soon. I ended up staying on RLS2 cause my theme was causing my phone to reboot whenever I pressed the lock button after I took the RLS3 update, but overall HD is a very solid ROM and I'm quite content with it.
I just recently flashed the newest hyperdrive update RLS3 On 11/27 I'm having problems on the power menu doesn't show the power off also in the very top next to the clock it shows a lock icon what is it there for and can I remove it

Also in the very top left corner how do I turn that off were it shows my speed?
I found out how to add toggles to power menu.
