[Q] Nexus 4 is not recognized via USB - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I know the name of my issue have discussed and maybe have done solving in many topic, but I believe that my problem is different.
I referred the topic Nexus 7 not recognised when connected via PC which was nearly identical to my problem. Not only my nexus 4 is not recognized by PC, but my battery life is decreased also. Through the topic, I realized that I used a car charger, and it caused my problem. Other comments said that there's a "safety switch" of some sort, written into the os, that "shuts down" the ability to communicate through usb after using these car chargers? I think it is because the car charger is unstable. Therefore, I tried to flash the stock rom and factory image to make sure every file system in my phone back the initial state, but it didn't work.
(P/S: I'm temporarily using the AirDroid to transfer file from computer to my phone, so I can flash the rom)
I have used my friend's nexus 4 to connect my PC and it worked. I think the drivers when my friend's nexus connected to my PC would be the same as the drivers for my nexus, but then when I connected my nexus to my computer, no thing happened, no notification, just only charging. I believe my cable is still fine because it worked fine with my nexus and my friend's nexus.
As I mentioned above, the battery life is reduced without any reasons. In the topic I referred, there was no one have the same problem with me. I exchanged mine with my friend's Nexus and tried to use it in one day. I checked email, listened to music, surfed web, and the battery was still over 40% before I went to sleep at night. However, my nexus is the opposite. I start using my phone after unplugging from cable in the beginning of the day, I don't do anything in a whole day, but the battery is only 10-20% at the late day. I'm very upset because the battery is not so long. I have a plan to replace the battery, but before that I want to ask you guy about my problem. Is it the system problem or the hardware mistake? Can I solve my problem without replace the new parts?
P/S: I'm a newbie, so if I have do anything wrong, please tell me. if you need any detail about my problem, I will give as much as I can. And if there is a post have the same problem as mine, please let me know and I'm sorry because of my careless when searching in forums. Thank you for spending your time to notice my topic.

Use AirDroid, thank me later!! Since you are a new to flashing, learn first by reading and watching YouTube video on how to root your device (if interested) then flash Franco Kernel (increase battery life tremendously)

New phone misbehaving

I've never participated in a forum where experienced members refused to assist others. Even other xda forums seem more helpful than this Athena forum.
I bought an x7501 off ebay a few days ago, and I've been playing with it. It's performance is not consistent, and I'm wondering if it is defective.
It was sold as NIB (new in box) and it appeared to be unopened when I received it, but I can't be 100% certain that is the case.
Some simple operations are grossly slow. The problems are intermittent, the worse kind to trouble shoot. Recently, I tapped on the CommManager icon on the Today screen at it took 15 seconds to open CommManager.
When I first received the unit, I installed Google Maps and tried out the GPS. I was able to connect to GPS inside my house. This morning I couldn't connect in my car, and when I stopped the car, I tried to connect standing outside in the open. After about five minutes, it wouldn't connect, so I went inside my house, and after a few more minutes, it did connect. While I was waiting for it to connect, I got my Kaiser and opened Google Maps and connected to GPS withing a few seconds outside in the open.
I had installed Opera 9.5 beta and NetFront 3.5 as well as RealVGA and MvRTrueVGA, and after running into strange display artifacts and bugs in the beta browsers, I decided to clear everything out, and ran the Clear Storage utility in System Settings. I had done this once before when trouble shooting failed attempts to connect the Athena to my Belkin Pre-N WiFi router.
So, now, all that's installed other than the what came on the phone is Google Maps and NetFront 3.5.
The battery performance is also a bit strange to me. It seems to be discharging even when I have it connected to my computer using the USB cable. Nothing is open in the background, and I wasn't using it, but it showed 70% when I connected it, and thirty minutes later it showed 60%. Is that normal?
Is the ROM that shipped with the phone questionable?
Might I get better, more reliable, more consistent performance with one of the ROMs available here?
I'm not ready to give up, but I'm not encouraged at the moment, and I'm not sure what to do next.
May I suggest Dual PK 3.0. Try backing up all that you have now and flash it with Dual PK and let us know the update.
Regarding the battery drain issue, most computer USB ports and non-factory chargers don't give enough power to even maintain (let alone charge) if you have all the radios on. Especially the GPS radio which seems to need a lot of power - I can go all day with the cell and bluetooth radios on and still have 90% charge after 16 hours, with little cell or internet use. But if I turn on the GPS it will be discharged within a few hours.
Computer USB ports are usually limited to 500 milliamps, and some chargers are less, so the only good solution is to only use the factory charger if you have everything on. Turn down your screen brightness, too. I leave mine at 50% both on the battery and when plugged in, except in full sunlight.
As for the GPS reception, its very bad. I have a sirf/star mouse-style GPS unit which locks on within seconds in the middle of the 1st floor of my 2-story house, attached to my Palm or a computer. My X7501 usually won't lock on even when I'm near a window. I rarely have a problem outside or in my car, though. I'm one of many that have reported similar issues.
I usually don't see slowdown issues, but I sometimes do if the wifi or GPS radios are on. Try only running cell and bluetooth for a while and see if that helps. I also found that Opera would slow down more, and then more, and even more as the cache filled up, but that was after I changed it from the default "1000". I cleared my cache and changed it back to the default cache size and I've been fine since.
Hey TnT,
Thanks for the detailed feedback. I'm going to play with it some more. I'm planning on flashing a different ROM, as TT2 suggested.
Which ROM are you running?
Try PK dual black... but don't for get to Hard SPL...
Please don't install anythink on your Harddisk, just install on storage card... My athena run fastrer if i put seftware on SDcard... If install ti HD it will slower.. i've tried it
thanks cornelius, i'm in the process of gathering the info and parts to install a new ROM. I've downloaded the "AP Dual 3.0 ROM" - I think that's the same thing as the PK Dual Black. I've also downloaded the AthenaUnlocker.exe - I think that's the hard spl you mention.
I bought my phone unlocked - I gather that's SIM unlocked, and the AthenaUnlocker will CID unlock it, which is necessary before installing the new ROM.
I'm trying to confirm everything, so I don't brick the phone, but I'm the information is scattered all over the forum and wiki. I found two versions of AthenaUnlocker.exe, both version 1.0.0.0 with different time stamps. I tried to watch a video of unlocking, but there was no audio.
I would appreciate any additional pointers in the process.
Thanks
Im running the factory ROM.

Just make sure you've got a fully charged battery before attempting to unlock or flash the ROM. If you have any particular question feel free to jump back in and post it. Oh and btw The PK Dual is what I was talking about in my last post...Sorry if it seemed a bit confusing.
I'm getting a error when I attempt to unlock my phone.
I ran version 3.12.3.3 of AthenaUnlocker.exe. The error is 202 connection.
the update utility cannot connect to your pda phone. please check that your usb cradle/cable is connected properly between the pc and your pda phone.
check the following:
1. the pda phone is connected to the usb cradle/cable.
2. the usb cradle/cable is connected to the pc.
I know the phone is connected. It is synchronized with ActiveSync 4.5, and it shows that it is connected.
Maybe I don't have the correct version of AthenaUpdater?
I've made progress with the AthenaUpdater.exe program.
I noticed that I had to take an action on the phone after I started the update process. I didn't notice that before, and there is nothing in the program that tells the user to check the phone.
Anyway, step one completed, and I completed step two.
Now, the phone won't turn on. I remember reading about a special key combination, and I'm wondering if I need to do that to get it to turn on and complete step three.
If I get through this successfull, I am going to update the wiki with a how-to for the next guy new to the Athena.
I found the key combination to get into the bootloader,
camera - power - reset
I continued with setp three of the AthenaUpdater, but I think because of the errors, the update did not work properly.
The phone will still not turn on.
I can get it to go into the bootloader, but I don't know what to do next.
I would really apreciate if someone who know what to do would post some helpful comments now.
Thanks
when I go into bootloader it displays

At this point, can I install the AP Dual 3.0 ROM?
I installed AP Dual 3.0 with no problem.
However, GPS seems to be not working.
Do I need to run the AthenaUnlocker.exe again?
Does that mean I'll have to reinstall the AP Dual 3.0 ROM again?
Wish I could help you, but I've never updated my ROM. Maybe the version coming on the X7510 will entice me to try.
What error are you getting when you try to run Google Maps? If you get an immediate error, your ports aren't set right. If it spins its wheels for a while the ports are right but the fickle GPS is taking its time.
Tonight I'm going to try and straighten things out on my Athena.
I hope I don't have to spend hours at it again. It would be great if someone who know has experience with the unlocker and the AP Dual 3.0 ROM could spend a few minutes answer my questions so I won't have to spend a few hours sweating through the upgrade process. Last night I literally was as sweaty as if I had gone for a jog; I was surprised at how stressful the upgrade process was for me (I mean, it's only a few hundred dollars if I brick it, right?)
The state of my Athena now is: I probably botched the unlock process in step two, because my GPS is no longer working.
Can I just run the AthenaUnlocker again, or do I need to first flash back to the original x7510 HTC ROM?
After I run the unlocker again, do I need to flash the AP Dual 3.0 ROM again?
I'm also wondering why I ran into problems with the unlocker, and concerned that I'll just encounter the same problems again. I'm hoping that because I have the AP Dual 3.0 ROM installed, the unlocker will perform differently and without errors.
If anyone is reading this who knows the anwser to my questions, I'd really appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks

Error message???
TechNTrek,
Thanks again for pitching in to offer me help.
Good new for me; The GPS started working. Earlier this morning, I decided to try it again outside, giveing it more time, and it connected. It had been bringing up a message screen telling me about connection problems.
I just tried to bring up the can't connect message screen by attempting to connect while inside my house, but the darn thing connected with 7 active satellites, and I can't reproduce the problem now to give you a detailed error description.
So, even thought I got a bunch of error messages during my unlocking process, the unlocking seems to have worked, and it left my Athena in working condition.
Some final notes relating to how I started this thread: now that I have AP Dual 3.0 ROM installed, the device seems to be performing better in all the problem areas I first mentioned.
I tested charging the battery by connecting to my computer's USB port, and, although it is charging slowly, at least it's not discharging while connected.
I think that experience discharging while connected might have been because Opera 9.33 beta was open to a page the was running something - just speculation.
I think it's also possible that I misinterpreted what I saw; it might not have been discharging while connected; instead, it might have been a delay in updating the display of the state of the battery; when I looked at the battery when I first connected to the USB, it showed 70%, but in reality it might have only been 60% charged, and the display had just not updated; then, when I disconnected it, the display had updated to the correct 60%.
Also, I haven't noticed any of the extremely slow performance when open apps or running apps. I did notice that my old Kaiser is a lot snappier than the Athena before I updated the ROM. I'm going to keep an eye on it, and do some more Kaiser/Athena performance comparisons.
I think the Athena may be slower than the Kaiser because of the video driver issue. The Athena has four times as many pixels to render, and the CPU has to do the rendering since the driver that would take advantage of the ATI video processor is absent. Hopefully, that will be fixed soon, as mentioned at HTCClassAction.org. http://www.htcclassaction.org/
I am going to start a new thread on a couple of questions I have. In the original HTC ROM, there was a network program from HTC, and I used it to connect to shares on my LAN over WiFi, and I want to find a replacement for it. There may even be a network program in the Dual 3.0 ROM, but I haven't found it yet.
Also, I love MS Voice Command 1.6 (a version made available in the Kaiser forum - not a more recent 1.6 version for sale by MS.) It works for me on my Wizard and on my Kaiser, but on my Athena, I can't start Voice Command using my Bluetooth headset.
I've searched both of these issues in the forums, but haven't found answers yet. Again, if anyone knows, please help.
Now, I'm going to explore the 3.0 ROM!

To get MS 1.6 to work try this:
Delete the paird BT headset, then do a reset on the phone then re-pair with the BT headset. Make sure the headset is not set to (stereo) mode and that should work. I had the same issue with the Jabra BT8010. After doing the above steps the push button activation innitiated voice command.
Thanks TootTalk2000,
That worked. I have the Jabro BT8010 too.
Have you figured out how to get the BT to work hands free and stereo too?

Yeah, when you set it to stereo however, all the audio gets routed to the BT headset (I personally don't like that, especially when using my GPS) and in order for you to use voice command then you have to take stereo/mono button which is the button closest to the mic on the bottom of the BT, then hit the answer button and you will hear VC prompting for your command. The draw back to this also is that everytime you want to use VC you will have to repeat these steps because the BT defaults back to stereo after you're don't with a voice call.

Samsung focus constantly restarting

Hey all. I installed Mango 2 days ago and had 0 issues with it up until today. Today when I plugged it in to charge, my focus immediately turned off and restarted. I left it off charge for a few hours, and now when I try to charge again, it keeps restarting. The phone works perfectly fine while not plugged in, but whenever I plug it in, it goes into a constant restarting cycle.
It doesn't matter whether its plugged in via USB or to the wall. I have no idea whats going on. Can't charge my phone :s
Did you ever get a fix for this? I'm having the same issue.

I don't know the problems are same but i am sure the symptoms are. I have Omnia 7 and I was facing the same problems for a while. In the end I fixed it.
I think battery had some conduction problems. You can try to clean this and make sure battery is not loose. Mine was shutting down with a tiny shake when it's not connected to charge. While in charge it was looping at the boot. I've tried everything to make it work. In the end, i figured it out, the battery had no charge to open itself and the electricity coming from USB is not enough to operate the phone sufficiently. I charged the phone via wall charger, it restarted few times and became stable.
My english is not very well for explaining this situtation and I hope it helps.
And yes, Mango might have a role in this because it's a really good battery drainer.
My Samsung focus i917R keeps restarting
Hello everyone,
Please be patient and bear with me while I try to tell you my story.
Background:
I bought the Samsung Focus i917R in September 2011, it had NoDo OS version that time. I read a lot about the microSD card issue and I really needed more than 8GB space on my phone. I had options to go with other HTC phone and not ever deal with Samsung ever but at that time Samsung Focus seem to be the best Windows Phone in the market to me (Amoled screen). I did a lot of research for a compatible microSD card and found that someone broke open an HTC (I believe it was HTC, don’t remember 100%) phone and found that it is using Sandisk class 4 memory card. So, I went with a 16GB Sandisk Class 4 memory card. My phone didn’t really give me any problem. I used up almost 17GB out of 22GB total memory.
Actual Story:
Then I updated my phone to Mango in end of Oct. I don’t remember if I started to have restart issue right after Mango update, but I noticed if I use my phone for a long time, like playing games or use the internet or use IM+ Pro or use Slacker Radio, it gets warm and then restarts. At that time I thought may be because I am using microSD card.
So, in Dec I formatted my phone and installed the newer Sandisk Mobile 8GB Class 4. I noticed I still have the same issue. This is very disappointing. I am only using 3GB space out of 15GB. So, I removed the microSD card and formatted the phone again. Now I have only 8GB and no microSD card. I still have the same issue. I will give you guys some examples of the issue.
Issue example:
If I run the Slacker Radio for over 10 min or so, the phone will get warm and it will restart.
Use the native Microsoft bing map app for a while and the phone feels warm and it will restart. I don’t think the phone gets hot or anything. This much heat for a mobile device should be acceptable. I was using iPhone 3G before I bought the Samsung and I don’t think the Samsung gets any hotter.
Let me know if any of you ran into similar issue. I don't know what to do. I bought the phone from a guy (he bought it from Rogers) and don't have the papers, not sure if it is still under warranty. Somewhat disappointed in Samsung.
I have same issues mentioned by albertleao, but could not find any solution. Can anyone post a solution too, please......

I have the same issues!
I thought the problem is related to the battery - so I purchased a new one - didn't make a difference!
I am using my Focus as a phone only, not a smartphone.
When I start running any program it starts a re-booting cycle. I have to turn it off for about 5 minutes before it will start up again. As a phone it will work 90% of the time without re-booting.
I noticed that this has accrued after the AT&T upgrade. I a thinking about installing the original rom!
Any suggestion will be welcomed.

[Q] Just a list of the problems I'm facing...

I apologize in advance if this is a repeat post in any way. I have searched a lot through the forums and didn't really find the answers I needed. It's very possible I missed them, with the millions of posts, so I thought I might make a post of my own.
I got my Nexus 4 a couple days ago and I'm facing the following problems:
1. Battery drain is ridiculous. I'm getting 12 hours with fairly light usage (I don't do any gaming), but everything (except Bluetooth) turned on
2. My charger makes a weird humming noise when the phone is not plugged in
3. When I'm on a call, I lose data 90% of the time, and I constantly lose service in places I have never had any problems
4. If I have my phone plugged into my car via aux cable, phone calls sound funny. It sounds like the person is standing ten feet away form their phone.
5. My earpiece has a weird noise to it
6. If I tap the phone on top, it sounds like something is lose in there
7. I can't run a Speedtest for the life of me, and I can't find APN settings that fix that for me
Is anybody else facing these problems? I'm afraid my device is faulty, but I don't want to wait 2 months to get a replacement...
Everyone of your " problems" has its own thread. I'd point you in the right direction for a few of them, but I'm busy at work. I just figured i'd let you know to search and you'll find what you're looking for

nope. perfectly fine here
1. may GPS and other background syncing is causing the problem?
2. No sound here.
3. You shouldnt lose data while on call...you should be able to call and have data at the same time
4. Havent tried since the base of the aux is too big to fit
5. the earpiece is known to have static/buzzing noise if your talking about that
6. most probably its the camera. its been noted that if you place your phone down (back first) it rattles...that is due to the camera. If you shake it, then its another metal piece inside that rattle. i have both, though it rattles, i dun "feel" any loose parts
7. what carrier are u using for apn?
can you define "searched a lot?"

New i9505G purchased from Google store; issues started once rooted. Please help!

I'll spare everyone the long background details. Suffice it to say, I'm somewhat technical and decided to switch from iOS to Android to be able to tinker with my device.
Got the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition from the Google Play store two weeks ago (4.3, everything updated). All worked well. My only qualms were: USB Audio connection in car did not work anymore with the new phone (no worries; most cars try to aim for the Apple folks anyway), and the SD Card was a huge disappointment because I couldn't freaking do anything with it. Other than that, no issues whatsoever. But it still felt somewhat limited (since my aim to go Android was to do fun stuff with the device).
Yesterday, I decided to root my phone. Used SuperSU v1.65. The process went smoothly via Odin. Rebooted, all was well. So I went ahead and installed apps that would now allow me to really take advantage of being rooted (FolderMount, Titanium Backup Root, Root Explorer).
Used the root explorer to edit the registry appropriately to get around the SD write-protect issue introduced by Android 4.3. Found steps on how to do this online; apparently it's a well-known work-around. Anyhow, that seemed to do it; SD card was now writable.
Used FolderMount to create links/shortcuts in phone memory to media folders on the SD (to free up space on device). Did this only for media; WhatsApp pics, Spotify songs, Titanium backups. Not for any actual apps/utilities.
Anyhow, while I was doing all of this, in my "rooted excitement", I started realizing that my phone wasn't behaving as expected:
1) When connected via USB to a computer the Phone was no longer recognized and opened as a USB device. I tried on a PC w/ Win 7 x64 with and without Samsung Keis software. I also tried on an iMac OSX w/ Samsung Keis for Mac. In either case, the S4 itself did say "Connected as a Media Device" and the Debug mode bean notification appeared as well. I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers and tried a dozen different "solutions" I found online. Nothing worked.
2) Bluetooth stopped working. Essentially, my Bluetooth toggle button is now permanently in the OFF position. When I try to turn it on, it slides over to ON for a few moments (without becoming lit-up), and the phone sits there trying to turn it on, and then promptly returns the slider back to the off position and I am still without Bluetooth.
I googled these two issues extensively and have realized that a lot of people are having them and they keep screaming that the 4.3 update is "broken".
Well, I can attest to the fact that these only started happening once I rooted the phone. I am determined to get to the bottom of it.
I have been going through the phone logs to see any/all error messages in there. Basically these lines are pretty repetitive in there and seem suspect for the Bluetooth issue, at least from what I can tell:

My question now is this: since the weekend is approaching, I will have some time to sit in front of my home PC and take care of a few things (work is brutal these days so I don't get much free time during the week). Anyhow, since I will have the time now, should I just go ahead and revert back to factory state and start from scratch again?
For that matter, is there a way for me to even do this? Would just unrooting via SuperSU and then resetting to Factory settings do it?
Any and all help would be much much appreciated. I would rather fix the issues than have to start from scratch, of course.

Issues update:
1) USB Connection issue: I have narrowed it down to the "MTP USB Driver" that isn't cooperating.
I have downloaded several different drivers ranging from USB drivers from Samsung (including Keis) to Micrsoft's MTP kit, nothing has worked. What's more is that this issue seems pretty prevalent amongst Galaxy owners but as of yet, I don't see a definite solution posted for it anywhere. I am running Windows 7 x64.
2) Bluetooth issue: I haven't been able to find much material on this. Does anyone here know how I can go about troubleshooting this or even gathering info from my phone to troubleshoot it?
After searching high and low for an answer to this, I ended up doing a factory reset (Menu-->Settings-->Backup & Reset-->Factory Data Reset) and that resolved the issue (while wiping my phone).
Thanks to the Android OS, I let my phone charge overnight while on WiFi and by the morning all the apps were reinstalled and updated, including the OS itself. My Kernal/Baseband/Build versions are all back to the ones I had when I got the phone from the Google Store, so that's comforting.
I had backed-up all my pertinent data to my SD card, so nothing as such was lost in that arena, which is good.
Thanks to all those who attempted to help!

[Q] Overheating problems on my Galaxy S4.

Overheating on my Galaxy S4.
I have a Galaxy S4 for about a year, I have this problem almost since I bought it, but it appears and reappears, so I let it go.
My Galaxy S4, using WhatsApp Music and the CPU temperature rises to just using these programs 45-50ºC
Using only the poweramp the instrument reaches 65c for no reason.
Using browser is hopeless, the device rises to 50-70 degrees and finally restarts or shuts down.
When I bought the unit in the first week I realized that he was heating a lot, but did not reach this temperature (50-70) normally.
I read in various forums that the normal temperature of the Galaxy S4 units were 35-56c
Recently, I downloaded a few albums of music and some pictures on my phone that day he shot and started this strange behavior, and following the same steps bellow, the problem still persists.
I already own a Galaxy Note and I have witnessed the bug "AndroidMediaScanner".
I did all the steps (exeto formatting the MicroSD, I recently formatted to exFAT SD) Until I checked the status of the reading process of media using the Android ADB, there was nothing abnormal ..
Even without the memory card, few files in SD (just applications) the problem still appears.
What do you think? It may be a hardware problem that requires replacement?
It may be the battery?
It may be the ROM • (when the OmegaROM use a series of modules Xposed)
Recently reinstalled the ROM and the problem still persists.
I read in a blog that the DS Battery Saver could be giving conflict with the manager's native battery used in the Galaxy S4, I uninstalled the program, yet the problem persists warming.
Connected to the USB temperature suddenly increases to 65c without any reason or use.
What recommend?
Sorry for the English. I used Google translator.
Maybe i attach prints.
My initial thought would be to get a new battery. Becaus it jumps so drastically when you start charging it. You could also check your battery connections. Make sure they are free from dust and corrosion.

You have to find the "service" that is turning in background....
If you mind it is the AndroidMediaScanner, I can say from experience ( it was killing my battery in less than 5 hours)
I stopped this issue (flaw) by cleaning one by one my Music folders and deleting those empty or having no music file in it ( that sometime comes when you clean a directory from the music player interface) .
then my phone turning back to normal temperature state.

I said in the text that has nothing wrong with MediaScanner Android. I used the Android Debug Bridge to verify this and it appears to be normal.
The application showed 10% CPU usage when the unit was starting.
I used OS Monitor app (it shows up the processes of the Linux kernel and user) in order to find some buggy process that was doing it.
I removed 4GB of external memory file and checked the Android Debug Bridge MediaScanner if the process had been stuck at some file storage.
There was no error in both stores.
I witnessed this primary failure of the Android system twice on my old Galaxy Note.
Thxz for reply.
whats the solution
