nop, 1st for Motorola Xoom 3G from Verizon, not even Xoom Wi-fi. Then other tablets.
For us to get 3.1 we have to ask acer, not google.
No and I doubt we will for a while. I hope Acer will build a good track record as to updating the software

I would dearly love if google split the OS into 2 "layers" the device manufacturer's layer, more like direct hardware stuff. Along the lines of EFI/BIOS and space for them to add specialized apps and UI, then the core OS stuff that was generic across all google devices. USB device support, widget control etc. Imagine if you had to wait for Dell before you could upgrade your copy of internet explorer if you wanted to? Screw that. We need to demand more control over our devices.

This is why I think I'm going to return my a500 and get a wifi xoom it'll get its updates straight from google where the Acer won't. I'm 100% unsure of acers track record of updates I have an atrix and motos updates for blur issues have been timely and good

You could always return it for in store credit then buy another A500 to "renew" your return period, then have another ever how many days to take it back. I love having Premiere Silver at Best Buy. Means I spend too much there, but I get 45 days to return, never a restocking fee.
According to Google they are trying to sort out fragmentation with icecream samwich. How long will that be I'm the pipeline though :/

Note to Acer: Unlock the bootloader and then we won't care how slow you are with updates. I'm really disappointed with this. I thought the whole point of Android was so we could get updates as soon as they are ready, not wait for the manufacturer to make them. Acer have my money now, what incentive do they have to update my device in a timely fashion. I might move mine on too.

I just did and I don't feel bad. If Acer decides to unlock the bootloader before I am able to buy a transformed or galaxy 10.1, then I will give it another shot.
Being a D1 user, I need strong dev support with lots of roms and hacks. Unfortunately this may not be in the A500's future.

My view on things is that eventually the A500 will receive a 3.1 upgrade and with the promised USB support for digital cameras and game controllers, the A500 is going to shine even brighter with its built in host usb port.

According to their website, we should be seeing some kind of update by June 2011. They say it will support 1080p by June 2011 via software update.

Why not just link to the actual acer site. Much more reliable than another site claiming that they said it.

Dont think its a full official release to everyone. Because over at Moto Xoom side, select few individual received it. We will get update for acer too sooner or later.
Is someone able to adapt a version of the xoom update to update a rooted Iconia? That seems fairly doable because I think it may be minimum a month+ before after releases it. I called them last night and they had no official update or news all.

If yes, then why ask about it? D13 bricked his a500 by pushing the zoom 3.1 update.

What is the difference of Android 3.2 Honeycomb, Android 3.1 and android 4.0? Will my Moto Xoom be updated to android 3.2 or wait for android 4.0? Thanks in advance~
Source:answers.downloadatoz.com/q,3417,what-is-the-difference-between-android-3-2-honeycomb-and-android-3-1.html
Three down, only seven more to go!
Primary difference is the support for lower resolution devices.
I doubt moto would put the development time in for the very little gain on other things included. We will probably get the 4.0 update, if there is another 3.X update that acutally does something for our devices, we might see it.
Doesn't 3.2 add improved hardware acceleration support and fixes for widgets and some of the google apps?
US Xooms will receive 3.2, since they're Google Experience devices. 3.2 is more than just small-screen optimized (the version number alone implies this is an update to all devices running Honeycomb, but it has already been verified to include platform-wide improvements). For European Xooms and other devices reliant on a carrier or manufacturer for updates, 3.2 is less certain.
3.2 is ONLY for 7 inch tablets. Xooms are 10.1 inches. Other then that, they are the same. So disregard anything else you hear.
Version number means next to nothing.

You speak as if you have some authority on the matter. I can tell you with great confidence that 3.2 will also fix various bugs one of which includes EAS security. Please don't come here and make blanket statements with absolutely no proof to back you up. I can at least give you an e-mail exchange between myself and a Google employee that confirms 3.2 will fix at least one bug and it has nothing to do with screen size.
3.2 adds support for 7", but it's not limited to 7" devices at all.

That's how I read it too
http://thisismynext.com/2011/06/20/...ummer-seven-inch-tablets-qualcomm-processors/
We’re also hearing that 3.2 will offer support for Qualcomm processors in addition to the NVIDIA Tegra 2 silicon currently powering today’s 10-inch tablets — a move which makes complete sense, considering both the 7-inch ASUS MeMO and Huawei MediaPad pack Qualcomm’s new dual-core Snapdragon chips. (That also means today’s Qualcomm-based 7-inch tablets like the HTC Flyer would be finally eligible for Honeycomb, but that upgrades will depend on how quickly HTC can port Sense over to the new code.) Lastly, we’re told that 3.2 will offer some bug fixes and improved hardware acceleration, as well as updates to Movie Studio, Movies, Music and widgets. Not bad for a quickie point upgrade less than a month after 3.1.

Certainly:

At least ONE critical bug that's not related to screen size at all is being addressed in the next software push.
I would be hard pressed to believe that a software update would only be for screen size... they're going to sneak in fixes for stuff here and there. Stuff you might not ever be affected by.

There will be a Honeycomb maintenance release that fixes this; it will probably be available in a matter of weeks (no promises; these things are hard to pin down exactly). And I am completely sympathetic with your frustration; we are trying hard to make sure that this sort of situation can't happen again.

The work is done for this, but this isn't the only thing being worked on. And you have to allow for carrier approvals, etc.; unfortunately, these things take more time than anyone would like.
As far as other devices go, it's complicated. We send out OTA's for some devices (Nexus products and Xoom), but not all; in those other cases, it's up to the manufacturer to send out updates. So bottom line: I don't know about the Transformer...

Two points:
1) I can respect your source valid, however, based solely on the term maintence update, I don't think we can assume that only means going to v3.2. Just like with any other version of android (say gingerbread for example), updates that fix bugs are historically numbered in sequence, I.e. 2.3 is the initial, then they release 2.3.2, 2.3.3 and the most recent, 2.3.4. Based on this, there is uncertainty.
2) my sources are much less technical, as they are tech journalists ( I use the last term loosely)
http://phandroid.com/2011/06/20/android-3-2-detailed-supports-7-inch-displays-qualcomm-cpus/
There are a few other sites that ran similar articles at the first mention of 3.2, but one is enough.

I just got off the phone with Acer Tech Support (June 30, 2011).
Acer had been sending out an OTA firmware update, which some of you may have received. I've been waiting all month to get the firmware update and called to find out why it had not arrived.
I was told that Acer pulled the firmware update because it is getting ready to release the Honeycomb 3.1 update. They said the new firmware update will be packaged along with the new Honeycomb update, instead of being sent out separately.
So when can we expect to see the updates? I was told that Acer was waiting on Google to issue the Honeycomb update confused: Huh? I thought that 3.1 was already widely available). Acer said they expect to be sending the Honeycomb and firmware updates out within the first 10 days of July.
That's the latest from Acer.

In other words, late July....or maybe early August. I put the custom ROM of Taboony on mine and it has been flawless.
I have a hunch that if you try Monster Madness you'll notice it's less flawless.
I've been having glitches with all the other custom editions so far. Haven't tested Taboony yet though.

Man you are really stuck on that monster madness trip I truly hope you find a rom that will play it soon!
It's not about the game. It's about faulty drivers that can damage your nice Tegra cores if put under too much stress.
The game itself is quite bad as far as I'm concerned but it is a good benchmark. On 3.0 for example the performance(FPS) was horrible.
honeycomb issues
I have browsed all over the net as well as many forums.even stuff from and about Google.Honeycomb has issues and they are being worked out all of our devices have similar troubles not just this one.Google and nvidia are working to fix.you will see when we get 3.1 the other tabs will be sent even more updates.im not happy about waiting.but do hope they get it right when its pushed to us.
Patience overcomes! !!!!!!
Well, that is something - if the delay is so a firmware update is packaged into the HC 3.1 update, then I'm all for the delay to get it perfect.
Not sure about the previously mentioned "They were waiting for Google to issue the Honeycomb update" part of the original post though!?!
I've not had a single problem from my tablet straight out of the box. I'm always curious why some people have to have the newest version of honey comb right now. Granted its been out, but why the huge rush. They are going to release it, so relax and let them get it right.
I'll bet money that when its released though, people will still find a reason to gripe and start demanding a new update that's not even released yet, and they will want the update last week. Sheesh, relax and enjoy your tablets people. Its a work in progress. If you wanted an apple like product, buy one, otherwise, consider that your dealing with an os that's still fairly new. Apple had this stuff planned for years before they released it. Android was an afterthought competition.
I love android and all its quirks. The customability is great. Hopefully it will start moving faster, but remember, apple basically has 2 os they use, phone and computer. Google is a search engine company first, not a os developer. They have a bit more on their plate than apple. Acer is a computer parts company, same thing. Tablets are great, but they are not os writers and are still catching up.
Motorola is in the same bind, their mainstay is not android stuff, its radios. They are always playing catch up on phones. Until a company that only makes 1 or 2 basic products and has its own os as powerful as android comes along, this is what we have.
Btw...I really do dislike apple products, just because of the cult like nature behind them. So don't take this as an apple love reply.

I've just played the first level of Monster Madness and the game plays very well on mine A500! there is no lag at all! Only one of the visual effects is misbehaving once in a while but this doesn't stop the game being completely playable!
I have some flickering when zombies jump out of the ground but that's it. I seriously doubt that it can harm my tablet in any way. It just seems like some texture issues that usually happen because of uncompatible grafics drivers it won't harm the tablet.

Officially it is true, so you will need a custom ROM for ICS on the a500/a501 as it stands today. I think I tried telling everyone that already, but just got flamed on the threads for saying it. But, that's not the point now.
Currently, let we only state what has been made public so nobody does the flaming again:
ACER has officially said that the only tablet that will be getting ICS currently sold with HC is their new a200/a700 models. ACER also stated they are scaling back the Engineering staff that currently works on the a100/a500 by 60-70%.
So read into it what you want. If you think this means 'currently' as of today doesn't mean that in the future they won't therefore this by no means closes the door on getting ICS via OTA then you can. You are free to believe what you would like.

Actually you got flamed for stating that the hardware in the A500 wouldn't support ICS, which is one of the most ludicrous things I've heard to date in this forum.

If not A500 then another of its peers will get ICS - Transformer anyone? Porting will be a breeze as the hardware on all current tablets are essentially the same
It just the waiting sucks :-D
Compared to HTC who has decided that gingerbread couldn't been properly installed on his HTC Desire neither, I undesrtand the decision of Acer.
This is business. Acer creates new models because the firm is in competition with the other manufacturers and, in order to sell their tablets, they must propose some new things on their new models.
Why to buy the A200, knowing that its hardware is very close to the A500's one? ... Because it runs under ICS when the A500 doesn't.
Since months, we can find dozens of custom roms on XDA running Gingerbread fine on the Desire. Even ICS has been ported successfully on the Desire.
So, I guess that everybody who wants ICS on his a500 will get it too in the near future.
sir you are 1 big troll
timmyDean You will always be a noob....
The rumors and news items that were spread seemed to be a scam... Acer clearly stated in front of the world (cnn I bellieve) that they are NOT cutting down on their tablets. Acer made it really clear that they will do a lot to bring acers tablets to the top of the market.
Stepping out of the tablet market would also be a much bigger mistake since the new version of windows (code-named windows 8) will be targeting tablet devices.
To clarify your topics regarding ICS needing higher end devices is a ****load of crap. The first target in the ICS development was to make a Honeycomb update that would be completely compiled, faster and more lightweight.
it actualy needs much lower specs to run than Honeycomb....
next on our list is the official mail you will get from Acer as fast as you ask them "are you planning on releasing android 4.0 on our devices?". In an e-mail to me they actually said that they were currently in contact with Google to test the new android 4.0 system on Acer Iconia a500 tablets.
If you are planning on spreading more rumors regarding devices or whatever. add the sources where you actually got this information to it.
Otherwise get out from xda or any other forum for that matter and trow your tablet away if you are so unhappy with it.
My Iconia Tab is fantastic, and knowing that the new release won't add much new to android 2.3.1 I can life another few days without the pressing need to root the device and pirate android 4.0 to it.
please know that ICS is just a compiled (little bit faster) version of android with a few new functions (including an easy to hack face recognition system).
So Timmy: Stop Trolling or bring that behaviour to the forums and message boards that actually allow that.

For you to claim I do not know what I'm taking about is just wrong and I never said anything about ACER getting out of the tablet business. If you'd read, you see that I stated we cut support by half on all twlighted hardware which the a500 is part of. So, instead of listening to actual truth, based on actual information from ACER you can believe what you would like. Jan will soon be over and that will be proof enough for you that there is NO ICS under your OTA Christmas tree.

Since when does "currently" not mean current? Of course I would believe ICS is not currently available on the A500, ifthat is what they said. It is believable because we don't have it now. To extrapolate that to mean it will never be available from Acer, is quite a leap. Samsung Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus are the only Samsung phones currently available with ICS, does that mean that there are no former or future Samsung phones that will have ICS? Use your head...

I sent an email to acer support and this was their answer:
I hope it's not true, but I will go ahead and get rid of my stock rom anyway.

Found this in the a100 section. 3 different reps said we are getting the ics update. One even said we will get the update after the a200 comes out. Well its out. but to me its looking very good. Cant wait!
Acer ANZ have given a release date for ICS for the A500 on their facebook fan page, and as usual for acer their promises of an april release have turned into more lies, their release date in answer to a question on their page is May 17.
Doesn't matter really, they haven't said no. There's plenty of aftermarket versions that work fine anyway.

Yes! End the lies! MAKE them release the OTA update in April. Whether it's finished or not. Whether it's full of bugs or not. Getting it soon is far more important than getting it right!
...or maybe not

The problem people have with dates is that they only look at the date and not the rest of what is said.
The Acer webpage says the date for the A500 update is TBA Mid April.
TBA means To Be Announced mid April.
Seems to me that since it is early April and not mid April, they are ahead of schedule.
But they are guilty of being late in the past.
Still, do not go by Facebook. It is not reliable for Acer announcements.
Acer ANZ is Datacom Manila, a closed group of 64.
Does not sound like an official Acer site to me.
Oh yea, here is the Acer webpage.

This will be my last Acer product until their management changes their priorities.
So far I've been deeply disappointed by the timeliness of their updates. Moto and Asus have already pushed ICS to their hardware and the Asus tabs has vastly superior hardware compared to Acer offerings.
I guess Acer is just not very attuned to their customers' needs and that's disheartening as an owner.
I second this. I listed mine on craigs list today.

Let's see, I bought my A500 in August and it was loaded with 3.0. I quickly got the update to 3.1 and fairly soon received 3.2. What do you want, 5 major OS versions in a years time? Seriously, people... relax. Even if you have to only wait 2 more weeks, you're selling your tablet? I'm calling shenanigans.
Learn patience. A good, bug-free update, especially one with this many changes, is worth the wait. And if you're THAT impatient, root the darned thing and load one of the many ICS versions that many developers have to offer.
/end rant, but not before a general facepalm

Can we chill a little bit? 3% of android devices are on ICS. Thats it. It's not like we're the last ones waiting for an update.....
If you will be watching the frequency and the increasing quality of the ICS leaks in the Dev section, you can expect the official ics update soon. And if you don't want to wait just install one of the marvelous ics custom roms. The improvement over hc is huge! !
With best regards, maris

I totally agree. but i was just making note that there are other options. If a company sets itself apart from the others in a way they Support what customers want. Right now that company could Take many customers from the pack. People are sick of devices becoming obsolete and disposable in a year or less. And locked down tighter then FT KNOX. (i live about 10 minutes from there) I can tell its very secure.
As far as locked bootloaders, the vast majority of phone users don't even know of the possibility of modding... let alone have any desire to do it. The same goes for updates. People on sites like this represent the small minority of users. The typical tablet or phone user wakes up one day, looks at their device, sees a box saying there's an update, presses OK and goes on with their lives.
They bought their device based upon the user experience, not some vague hope that some major change will happen... sometime... soon.
Hello everybody, this is my forst post, so be comprehensive...
If someone wants an Acer ICS build there is the latest "leak 1.031" on the Developer section which is very easy to install - download the zip file, rename it to "Update.zip", put it on your extSD and reboot while holding "power" + "vol-".
I never did any mods to my A500 since I bought it, never rooted or so, but lately it was starting to freeze and force close quite a lot so I updated it manually and am very satisfied - running very smooth, web browsing is much faster (using ICS browser+) and everything seems to work perfectly! I'm just saying that it's a very simple way to get stable ICS without doing any complicated things (CWM, root, kernel mods, etc...)
Cheers!

While we wait, I have to wonder if the general number of us were polled as to WHY we want ICS, what the reasons would be? I'd like to have it, but honestly I don't know of any compelling reason aside from the fact that it is something new.
I'll bet once we get it not much time will pass before we are Jonesing for Jelly Bean for the same silly reason.
I'm running Thor's HC ROM on mine, and very happy with that. It runs well and everything works. What more could I realistically ask for? What's ICS supposed to bring us, anyway?

Well ice cream will bring us something to put our jellybeans in. sheesh everyone knows you can't have jellybeans without ice cream first.
I will not scream for jelly bean if I get my ics. I will ask politely in a demanding way.
