nop, 1st for Motorola Xoom 3G from Verizon, not even Xoom Wi-fi. Then other tablets.
For us to get 3.1 we have to ask acer, not google.
No and I doubt we will for a while. I hope Acer will build a good track record as to updating the software

I would dearly love if google split the OS into 2 "layers" the device manufacturer's layer, more like direct hardware stuff. Along the lines of EFI/BIOS and space for them to add specialized apps and UI, then the core OS stuff that was generic across all google devices. USB device support, widget control etc. Imagine if you had to wait for Dell before you could upgrade your copy of internet explorer if you wanted to? Screw that. We need to demand more control over our devices.

This is why I think I'm going to return my a500 and get a wifi xoom it'll get its updates straight from google where the Acer won't. I'm 100% unsure of acers track record of updates I have an atrix and motos updates for blur issues have been timely and good

You could always return it for in store credit then buy another A500 to "renew" your return period, then have another ever how many days to take it back. I love having Premiere Silver at Best Buy. Means I spend too much there, but I get 45 days to return, never a restocking fee.
According to Google they are trying to sort out fragmentation with icecream samwich. How long will that be I'm the pipeline though :/

Note to Acer: Unlock the bootloader and then we won't care how slow you are with updates. I'm really disappointed with this. I thought the whole point of Android was so we could get updates as soon as they are ready, not wait for the manufacturer to make them. Acer have my money now, what incentive do they have to update my device in a timely fashion. I might move mine on too.

I just did and I don't feel bad. If Acer decides to unlock the bootloader before I am able to buy a transformed or galaxy 10.1, then I will give it another shot.
Being a D1 user, I need strong dev support with lots of roms and hacks. Unfortunately this may not be in the A500's future.

Dont think its a full official release to everyone. Because over at Moto Xoom side, select few individual received it. We will get update for acer too sooner or later.
Is someone able to adapt a version of the xoom update to update a rooted Iconia? That seems fairly doable because I think it may be minimum a month+ before after releases it. I called them last night and they had no official update or news all.

If yes, then why ask about it? D13 bricked his a500 by pushing the zoom 3.1 update.

Since you're in the UK, I would take a look at the Asus Transformer first, IMHO.
I was under the impression that the Xoom was gonna be Google's device....and also, on that note, since for now Google said no to company mods(ex. Touchwiz UX, etc.) then wouldn't every tablet running honeycomb get their updates right away?

I thought so ty.
but from my understanding, although the Xoom suppose to be the nexus of tablet, but this still confuse me, the recent update doesn't come stright from google. it came from motorola.
which means if google decide to release a new patch, its down to motorola to deliver to us. and if they choose to delay it, it will be a bad thing.
for example, waiting for 2.3 on nexus one is long enough, forget about on the motorola droid or other HTC handsets.

It was never advertised as such, but seeing as how everyone at Google working on android probably has a Xoom, I wouldn't worry about updates. The 3.0.1 update came through incredibly fast. Because the software is completely 100% stock and most android tablets are running the same tegra 2 platform, updates can happen much quicker.
Don't expect a nexus type tablet till after tablets become more popular, the same way it happened with phones. The xoom isn't the "official " nexus tab but it is the one considered it for now. You will not have to make this decision until next year, then we may see a nexus tablet or xoom2
Sent from my Evo using Tapatalk
Consider our Xooms to be the equivalent of ADP1. If no one is familiar or hasn't been around Android for that long:
ADP1 or Android Dev Phone 1, was not a Nexus device, but was the Original Google Development device. The device was incredibly similar to a G1, only released earlier than the G1, with a lot more downloadable goodies than the G1 had initially(pre community development). But the only 2 big differences in the G1 and ADP1 where radio lock and boot loader.
2 years post G1/ADP1 we have the Nexus 1.
from Google's I/O keynote today
Rejoice! Google has announced that they are putting together a team of people from many of our favorite carriers and OEMs, to commit to bringing the latest Android updates to users devices. These new guidelines will be constructed by folks at Verizon, HTC, Samsung, Sprint, Sony Ericsson, LG, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Motorola, AT&T and, of course, Google.
According to Google, new devices will receive the latest updates for 18 months after their release -- if the hardware allows. More to come. Be sure to follow our live blog here.

I believe they stated that "other" Honeycomb devices would receive the update in the coming weeks. So, yes, I'm worried until the sources hit and we get custom roms. Then not so worried anymore.
it all depends on how quickly acer gives an update.. can we not install the honeycomb 3.1 as it is as there is very little change made to the OS by acer or do i have to root it before doing it?
Well I'm worried, I think I'm taking mine back tonight as its tthe last day of my return. If the bootloader is cracked or Acer makes some statement or releases an update in the coming weeks than I'll buy it again. Otherwise ill see what the Samsung is all about.

Not worried. The Xoom wifi-only doesn't even have an update date yet. Most likely they just wanted to get it out quickly for all the Xoom 3g folks that have had buyer's remorse creeping up on them since launch.
Per msnbc.com
"It's weird that Google is singling out the Xoom, on the tablet side. We've already tested three Honeycomb tablets in addition to the Xoom: LG G-Slate, Acer Iconia A500 and Asus EeePad Transformer, and they all work about the same, and share the same basic specs. Presumably they will be included in the whole "coming weeks" thing, but if not, that will be bad."
I agree with this; not worried. They said that others were going to be available at a later time (coming weeks).

If Acer updates our Iconias, then all is well. If not, well just have to rape their support pages/email/everything
Not sure I see anything too ominous in this announcement. On the plus side, the consortium is designed to reduce fragmentation, a huge complaint from the Google developer/user community. Perhaps Google's influence will prevail over the commercial monsters.
Just because Acer wasn't mentioned doesn't really portend anything bad, IMO. Not sure if they're just courting the flagship platforms and using them for an example, but I doubt seriously that means they're ignoring all the other platforms.
Sure, I'd like to see an update from the manufacturer, but I'd rather have a recovery first. I mean, I've only had the device for 2 weeks. How greedy can I really get?

Not worried, Acer states they will release updates by June on their a500 website. My guess is 3.1 will be coming then as well:
"720p is the current resolution supported. 1080p will be available by June 2011 via software upgrade. "
It surprises me how many folks are returning these so fast. Gotta have some patience...everything will progress forward, it just takes longer than 14 days most of the time. Of course something better will come, it always does. But this is still a nice device for the times. I knew I was an early adopter of the OS and the hardware when I bought...I'm in for the long haul unless something breaks

What is the difference of Android 3.2 Honeycomb, Android 3.1 and android 4.0? Will my Moto Xoom be updated to android 3.2 or wait for android 4.0? Thanks in advance~
Source:answers.downloadatoz.com/q,3417,what-is-the-difference-between-android-3-2-honeycomb-and-android-3-1.html
Three down, only seven more to go!
Primary difference is the support for lower resolution devices.
I doubt moto would put the development time in for the very little gain on other things included. We will probably get the 4.0 update, if there is another 3.X update that acutally does something for our devices, we might see it.
Doesn't 3.2 add improved hardware acceleration support and fixes for widgets and some of the google apps?
US Xooms will receive 3.2, since they're Google Experience devices. 3.2 is more than just small-screen optimized (the version number alone implies this is an update to all devices running Honeycomb, but it has already been verified to include platform-wide improvements). For European Xooms and other devices reliant on a carrier or manufacturer for updates, 3.2 is less certain.
3.2 is ONLY for 7 inch tablets. Xooms are 10.1 inches. Other then that, they are the same. So disregard anything else you hear.
Version number means next to nothing.

You speak as if you have some authority on the matter. I can tell you with great confidence that 3.2 will also fix various bugs one of which includes EAS security. Please don't come here and make blanket statements with absolutely no proof to back you up. I can at least give you an e-mail exchange between myself and a Google employee that confirms 3.2 will fix at least one bug and it has nothing to do with screen size.
3.2 adds support for 7", but it's not limited to 7" devices at all.

That's how I read it too
http://thisismynext.com/2011/06/20/...ummer-seven-inch-tablets-qualcomm-processors/
We’re also hearing that 3.2 will offer support for Qualcomm processors in addition to the NVIDIA Tegra 2 silicon currently powering today’s 10-inch tablets — a move which makes complete sense, considering both the 7-inch ASUS MeMO and Huawei MediaPad pack Qualcomm’s new dual-core Snapdragon chips. (That also means today’s Qualcomm-based 7-inch tablets like the HTC Flyer would be finally eligible for Honeycomb, but that upgrades will depend on how quickly HTC can port Sense over to the new code.) Lastly, we’re told that 3.2 will offer some bug fixes and improved hardware acceleration, as well as updates to Movie Studio, Movies, Music and widgets. Not bad for a quickie point upgrade less than a month after 3.1.

At least ONE critical bug that's not related to screen size at all is being addressed in the next software push.
I would be hard pressed to believe that a software update would only be for screen size... they're going to sneak in fixes for stuff here and there. Stuff you might not ever be affected by.

There will be a Honeycomb maintenance release that fixes this; it will probably be available in a matter of weeks (no promises; these things are hard to pin down exactly). And I am completely sympathetic with your frustration; we are trying hard to make sure that this sort of situation can't happen again.

The work is done for this, but this isn't the only thing being worked on. And you have to allow for carrier approvals, etc.; unfortunately, these things take more time than anyone would like.
As far as other devices go, it's complicated. We send out OTA's for some devices (Nexus products and Xoom), but not all; in those other cases, it's up to the manufacturer to send out updates. So bottom line: I don't know about the Transformer...

Two points:
1) I can respect your source valid, however, based solely on the term maintence update, I don't think we can assume that only means going to v3.2. Just like with any other version of android (say gingerbread for example), updates that fix bugs are historically numbered in sequence, I.e. 2.3 is the initial, then they release 2.3.2, 2.3.3 and the most recent, 2.3.4. Based on this, there is uncertainty.
2) my sources are much less technical, as they are tech journalists ( I use the last term loosely)
http://phandroid.com/2011/06/20/android-3-2-detailed-supports-7-inch-displays-qualcomm-cpus/
There are a few other sites that ran similar articles at the first mention of 3.2, but one is enough.

Very interesting considering that Xoom and the Transformer are getting 3.2 updates already (and are continuing to get them). I do appreciate that Acer is at least updating us compared to our last udpate (3.1) which Acer did not give straight answers about. I'm not trying to start a controversy here but I wonder what's really going on with this update delay?
F-ing typical...
I'm guessing they're trying to Sync up all OTAs for every region. The 25th sounds reasonable for the 2 week delay; like how HC3.1 was initially released June 21, and when it finally hit all markets, July 4 here in the US.

Also your acer, did you happen to make a backup before all the custom roms? Like just after rooting and clockworkmod? -__- i'm in need to get a backup for a a500 USA a500. Super file manager deleted my whole micro SD card with my backup.

You can already output 1080p with the current 3.1 build from Acer.

Dear Fans, due to some policy changes from Google where Acer has to comply,

But what were the policy changes and was it really a change or a "hey you're ****ing up fix it before we yank the license" type thing? Given the similarity of the hardware, what was Acer doing differently than Asus or Motorola that they have to postpone the release? There are so many things I can think of that it makes my head spin.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Acer worse than I hate any other corporation(The FSF and similar entities being ones I'd actually trust). I just wonder is all.
did they say "final" ?

How long did it take for there to be an app to root 3.1, after it was released?

I used the same app that I used to root 3.0 to root 3.1.
Acer have a contract with Google to release the devices with Android.
so if Google change policies Acer have to follow that... and cannot violate the contract...
look far more than your devices please.
many things have to be taken in consideration.
so far I do not care anything about 3.2 ... what really that will give to me... nothing more, nothing much...
maybe the 4.0 will...
why people want more and more and more and more and more... and when they got what they want, they want more and more and more and more again...
Patience is mere virtue...

GIVE LESS MONEY TO GOOGLE WHEN THEY DO THE CONTRACT ? as an answer totally reliable
I'm perfectly content with 3.1. Some people just NEED to have the new because they feel it's their right. Be thankful that they are pushing to get 3.2 out as quick as they can.
I eagerly await the 56 posts about the OTA update not working.

there's still a lot of bugs left unfinished on this device.. I would say they at least owe us the fixes before moving on to the next model. Afterall, we paid for it work.

I'm not experiencing any day to day problems in using my tab... What bugs are you referring to?
What do you think? You think they will make it before the year is out?
I'm skeptical
ICS before the year is out...
Yup.
Just not gonna say which year.
i dont know its getting mighty close id love to see it but i dont see asus puttin it on the tf101 before they use it to sell the prime for a bit, but i think the devs have to be close and i am almost willing to bet the devs get it on the tf101 before asus unless they just have to wait for drivers from asus first to get the few things that arent readily working as it is...ive seen multiple devs with it on their devices or videos anyway. im thinking we could have cm9 by the end of january and asus should be pushin it by absolutely no later than february or march. i kno this seems long off but from the reading ive done its the general range...asus is ahead of most manufacturers on updates though....so we will see, i know im ready for it,i have a feeling this will accomplish the goal of fixing the fragmentation between phones, tablets, and more. and put android on track for complete dominance of the mobile markets.....you can do it!!!!lol
Given they have only just pushed out a HC3.2 update, no....
That's an admission that we won't be seeing ICS for at least a month.
I don't think so... I think that ICS will come in Mid-January or February If it wasn't later than that !!

I keep reading they are the best at updates. Its such a small and simple thing for the manurfacturer to do and they have done it perfectly!
Before mid January I would say.

Well, I just had a tiny update of some sort the other day. But I thought that might be to fix something in preparation for the big update.
Though, and I don't know if that is related to the patch, suddenly something seems to be running at 100% most of the time making the tablet very sluggish.

I said they push A 3.2 update, not the 3.2 update.
Probably not until after the Prime is widely available. They don't want anything eating into it's sales. Cyogenmmod might come out first.
No, i dont think so. They announced january anyway for the prime.

I'd say February.

Manufacturers, especially true manufacturers like ASUS and Samsung, generally don't care about supporting their products because they push out updated hardware too often.
I hope that ASUS will be far more reliable than Samsung has been with Android support though because Samsung is atrocious. You can pretty much expect zero support for any Samsung Android phone/tablet.

There is too much dumbfounding Samsung hate regarding updates
Fact: the i9000 got updates from 2.1 through 2.3.5 and is still getting weekly leaked OFFICIAL roms
Fact: The i9100 is now on 2.3.6 and has a leaked early ICS build
Fact: The Galaxy Tab 10.1 went from Android 3.0 to Android 3.2 with Touchwiz Enhancements
Fact: Samsung products are EASY to root, have Odin to flash roms from AND NEVER HAVE HAD LOCKED BOOTLOADERS
if you bought the US carrier locked versions then it is their fault that you're not getting updates. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing I see them doing wrong is not getting the ICS update for the original Galaxy S, but that may change soon.
Samsung flagship devices get updated wayyy more often than HTC or other manufacturers. FACT
As far as Asus goes, they are supporting their device well and I presume they will continue this, but patching the rooting is kind of a **** move to the community.

That sounds dubious. Every week? And how can they be official if they are leaked. Doesn't sound like something most people would find useful.

They are probably leaked builds of the same update seeing how Sammy sucks at updates n always breaks things lol or something is always wrong. And I'm sorry but the fact that Sammy devices are easily rootable is a BAD thing maybe not for us on xda but is for Jo blow.

ASUS has been incredibly good about keeping the Transformer updated. Best of all the Android tablet makers, including Motorola with the Xoom (which was supposed the reference Honeycomb device). The Transformer has been updated to the latest available version of Honeycomb within a couple of weeks of its release.
I fully expect the same with regard to ICS.
