Different power adapters? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I received a replacement AT&T Galaxy S4 earlier this week and it came with another power adapter and all accessories.
The power adapter that came with my first phone was made in China, and it doesn't get very warm when charging. It also seems to charge the battery kind of slow.
The power adapter that came with my replacement was made in Vietnam, and it gets pretty warm when charging. It also seems to charge the battery faster.
I checked the specs on both chargers and they're the same. Am I imagining things, or does the new one from Vietnam really charge faster and get warmer because of it?

In theory its possible, but unlikely. If your in the U.S. the max voltage your gonna be pulling is 110 volts (usually a tiny bit less)
More volts = more heat = faster charging time, but it would also be rougher on the battery. You could always bust out a multi-meter and take some readings

Is it white and says Samsung? The stock S4 charger is 1amp. It will charge super fast with the Note IIs 2amp charger.

The chargers were identical on the outside, except for what country they were made in. They are white S4 chargers.

You're thinking about amperage, not voltage. And the AC voltage won't have any effect on the phone anyway, because the charger converts that to 5V DC.

I have been trying to get an additional PSU and car charger for my Acer. Went to Frys, tried almost EVERYTHING they have on those Universal PSU and NONE of them work in the pin connector for the Acer. What gives!
Try to get a free tip for my Energizer Xpal and also result in zero search. Any fellows have a pointer to where in getting the right tip? Thx
So far the ONLY one that I have found that works is the Enercell 12 / 1.5 with the 'G' tip, but it's like $30 at RadioShack. The tip itself is a little long and if it wiggles it will stop/start charging off and on.
I'm working with a few people to find some at decent price for us.
anyone measured the dimensions of the charging tip at all? If worse comes to worse we could always buy a generic 12v 1.5a AC adapter from ebay and buy the tip separately to solder on.
The USB port wont be able to charge the tablet fast enough and the battery will still drain. I've found that this happens on my Xperia X10 mobile phone. I have to disable 3G data in order get it to start charging.

The 'g' tip for the Encercell is 1.1mm x 3.0mm
Hope that helps
thanks for hte dimensions... unfortunately they don't sell that brand over here in Australia. I'm also reluctant to pay ~$30 for a charger.
I wonder if one of the round tips on this USB charger would fit:

It may still charge if the device is switched off completely.

No charging difference at all except I don't have to have my face mashed up against the wall while it charges.
I used a piece of wire from an old 1amp charger I had. The extra piece doesn't even get slighty warm. 1.5 amps isn't all that much juice. I did solder the connetions too.

Wal-Mart Car Charger
The Wal-Mart Car charger for portable DVD players works perfect.
a quick look at the wall power supply says that it it needs 12V at 1.5 amps with center of tip positive.
The Wal-Mart car charger puts out 2000ma (2amps), and has a tip that works.. It works PERFECT and it only costs 15 bux.
usb charging is out.. usb is only 5V at 500 ma (.5 amp).. not sure why everybody complains about wanting USB to charge their tablet. Even if they did add it, it would take so terribly long to charge it, you would get mad. With the proper charger and voltage, it only takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge the thing...
Good luck!

This has been a topic of discussions for a LONG time hopefully you'll know.... Couldn't there be a potential issue with charging at 2 amps when it calls for 1.5?? I was told you could use less but not ore without causing damage to the battery?
I have a 'demo' on the way from overseas to try that I should get Wednesday. I will let you know ASAP.
This is a big issue with me as I prefer a charger at home and the office and I'd like something that I can charge on my desk 'without my face mashed up against the wall' (as atomicwedgie so perfectly put it)

The Amp rating on wall chargers is what the charger is CAPABLE of outputting, not what it is always outputting. As long as there is current limiting built into the charging circuit (which is a must), then the charging circuit in the A500 won't pull any more amperage than it needs to charge. Don't worry about buying a higher amperage charger than is needed, but do worry about buying one that is lower as it can overload the charger.

Anyone else surprised at how thick the Sync - charge cable is compared to the GT-N8000 series cable.

Not really. The cable for my S4 is pretty much exactly the same. The charger for my S4 has the highest current output of any of my chargers and I put the size of the cable down to a need for low resistance so the tablet can benefit fully from the high current.
i did a big ole test with various chargers and cables with different devices and found this cable:http://www.monoprice.com/Product/?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=5459&seq=1&format=2 to be just as good as the stock cable on the stock charger according to kill-a-watt. the s4 and gnote 8 cable only pulled 10W while the monoprice and gn 10.1 2014 pulled 11W.

Odd that you had any kind of real world success with those cables. I have used Monoprice cables for years and love them, but I have several of those same cables in lengths from 3-15 feet and every one of them charges at half the rate or less of the stock cable. I normally get >1000 mAmp with the stock charger and cable, but only get ~500-750 mAmp with stock charger and any of my Monoprice cables I wish they charged at the same mAmp rate b/c I like having a longer charging cable. Has anyone else had this issue or found a 6 to 10 foot cable that still charges at the same mAmp rate of the stock cable?
If you double the length of a cable, you double its resistance. It's not possible for a longer cable to pass as much current unless it is proportionally thicker. The stock cable is both short and thick; that is why it works so well.

I was surprised myself. I have a lot of the six feet monoprice (or 5) and none of those pulled as much wattage. I was actually trying to see which workedmwith my t100 and found that the t100 3 footer and gn101 2014 and the monoprice 10footer were the only ones that pulled 11 watts. the 5 pulled only 8watts.
if I have time tomorrow I'll redo all my tests with various chargers and devices and list the killawatt results. I dont know how much current actually gets to the device, only whats being pulled from the wall. the charge percent per hour reported by bmw pro seems to show they equal though from a small sample.

Not at all. Any charger should work; the only difference between chargers is their maximum current output but the device determines what current it draws so there isn't any risk in using a charger with a higher maximum current than the supplied charger.
i was corrected when i stated the same. the output of the gn10.1 charger is 5.3v while most others are 5v. it may not be enough difference to cause any harm, but be aware that there may be a chance of damage over time. the voltage will be constant, but the amperage is what is controlled by what the phone requests.
that said, i haven't had any problems with my s4, t100, gn8 or gn2 yet.

my tests would actually be inconclusive since the killawatt can only judge the amount of current that the charger is delivering and not the final amount that the device actually gets.
from a short test last night i found the actual amperage that the monoprice 10' ferrite core cable is arounf 1700mAh where the 3' stock is 1900mAh.
those results are from battery monitor widget pro. i'd consider it a good trade off for getting 7 extra feet. the 10' is only a few dimes more than the cheap 5' cables. for some reason the 5' wouldn't coax the charger to pull as much from the outlet as the 10' did.

That's a fair point but I don't actually thinks it's an issue.
The USB 2.0 standard requires that the voltage be 5.0V ± 0.25V so the maximum voltage (which any USB compliant device should be able to cope with) is 5.25V. The Note charger is rated for the output at the charger not the cable since the cable is not an integral part of the unit. There will be a small voltage drop caused by the cable so the actual output at the phone will be within spec and therefore safe.

My OnePlus One melted!!

I just got a new OnePlus One over the holidays. I've noticed that periodically it was getting very hot when I was charging it, both when using a car and wall charger and multiple different cables. On Saturday night I left it on the charger overnight and in the morning the phone was melted around the charger cable! Check out the pics below.
Only thing worse is that OnePlus says that it's likely because I was using a 3rd party charging cable (from my Samsung Galaxy S3) so they won't provide a refund or replace it. But they will let me pay $350 for a new mother board. So I'm out $400 and a brand new phone.
Normally using a different cable and charger wouldn't have such an effect. I know many friends who use aftermarket cables and chargers built for different phones and their phones are fine so I take that cause with a grain of salt.
Having said that, did you do any modifications to the phone, whether it be software or hardware? When it was getting hot, did you do anything about it?

No, I just got it. Didn't root or anything. When it got hot I rebooted the phone .. what is strange is that it didn't seem to always overheat. But it happened more than once on different chargers and cables.
I've been using a Samsung charger and cable that came from a galaxy s4 on so many different phones and nothing ever happened to them. Even have charged my one plus one with it. It was charging very slowly so I just used the one it came with and it charges at full speed.
Try talking with a different person and not mention using a different cable and charger. Its definitely not because of that. You deserve a new one.

Thing is if a charger comes rated at a high output amp, they usually ship an appropriate gauge cable for it. I'm pretty sure Samsung would've shipped a 28/24AWG Micro-USB cable with a 1/1.5/2A (maybe not 1A) charger to prevent the wire from melting out. My guess is OP probably mixed cables with chargers. It's common to have multiple Micro-USB to USB cables these days given most electronics support. Most of the time these cables are 28/28 gauge. I am guessing OP used a 28/28 with a high amp charger (although the standard S3 charger seems to be rated at 1A from my search results). Seems like OP used the OnePlus One charger rated at 2A with a cable which was probably rated for 0.7-1A (that seems to be the standard S3 charger's output).
Can we get more info on what charger and what gauge cable was used OP?

Everybody got a phone charger and cable with their phone right? Why would you use some other cable or charger then? Especially now that it seems that its possible to have your phone melt with using 3rd party equipment, why would you still not use the charger/cable that came with the phone? To me thats like buying a truck, putting different wheels on it and getting pissed when something happens.

Hey, you can easily and realitively cheaply change the plastic back cover on the OPO. Just purchase an original back cover replacement from OPO. It comes in various colors and even in bamboo. If the metal plug is still ok and only the plastic melted, you should be ok and still have a 100% original phone.

Leaving it on charge overnight isn't good for the battery anyway, the more time a lithium battery spends at peak voltage (4.2v) the faster it degrades.
Transmitted via Bacon
WHen you don't have the official charger/cable with you, I ALWAYS tell people to charge it via a computer USB port (0.5 A) instead to be on the safe side (with whatever cable you plan to use).
And never mix/match your USB cable/charger ports.

Fast charging? As I understand it - and I could be wrong - the problem isn't fast charging. it's people using unapproved USB-C cables and or chargers.
Seems to be a problem with the international models.

It's not that it's unapproved. It's that they are using cheap cables and chargers. We went through this crap with the OnePlus3 and Nexus 6P. Cheap chargers and cables can do damage.
Well, from the looks of it. Even Anker who is pretty reliable issued a recall for almost all their usb-c cables.

You're probably right. My Note 7 gets pretty warm when using fast-charge. And batteries don't like heat. So, since I don't really need fast-charge when I charge my phone most of the time, I turned it off. Phone no longer gets warm when charging.
Besides, batteries will last longer without excessive fast-charging.

I use these with my Note 7 and Nexus 6P. Unless I just got lucky and got 6 good cables .. I use them everywhere .. work, car (Android Auto) and home .. then these are good. I highly doubt a USB-C cable that works brilliantly with the Nexus 6P would fry the Note 7. I've had mine for 12 days and when I hook the Note 7 up in my truck for AA it's charging as well and it never gets much warmer than if it were on the wireless Samsung charger.

Maybe something is wrong with yours. My Note 7 has been sitting on the Samsung wireless charger on my desk at 100% for the last hour. Since all this has made me paranoid .. I pick it up every so often and touch it to my face. It's not even lukewarm. I don't think fast charging is the issue with this. The guy in China who reported this which later was picked up on Reddit .. his cable was just some black microusb cable with a while adapter on it and no further info. If the cable was a piece of crap and he was using a cheap wall charger .. Samsung adapter or not I think this was the cause of the boom. I could be wrong but I don't think so. Like said about .. the usb-c cable/charger subject was discussed to death about the OnePlus3 and Nexus 6P (Macbook as well) .. and it's always the same thing. Don't use cheap junk. :good:
just be careful what ur using

Maybe something is wrong with yours. My Note 7 has been sitting on the Samsung wireless charger on my desk at 100% for the last hour. Since all this has made me paranoid .. I pick it up every so often and touch it to my face. It's not even lukewarm.

If your phone is at 100%, then it's not charging. Therefore, it won't be warm. When the battery gets low, 30-40% and it's on fast-charge, it gets very warm. I don't know about the wireless charger, but it's warm with the cable. Either way, I disabled fast-charge and no more warmth.
Are we far away from FW update limiting charge current? I turned off fast charging due to phone getting hot, which is not healthy for batteries, especially if those are hard to replace and I charge overnight anyway, but on some occasion I could be in rush to charge and fast charging is the solution and I want fast charge as option, but if things go like that, the easiest fix for Samsung would be to eliminate fast charge for now.
All phones should get warm while fast charging. S7 Edge did the same thing, so did the nexus 6p.
I charge mine with fast charging every single time.
i use quick charge no problems here

It could be they are using these cable that's being recall?

Some Anker USB C cable sold at Amazon last month could blow you note 7 up.
Guys please check if you have these Anker cable and return it back to manufacture.

If that cable delivers 20 volts designed for PC, to the phone designed for 9v max, that would double the amperage and quadruple total power drawn, I can easily see how that could burn the whole phone to crisp.
Going back to fast charge on N7, I'm sure it's well designed and the heat well within specs (it's even mentioned in manual), but the fact remains that higher operating temp of battery, the lower (slightly) life span of the battery. With battery sealed inside and rather difficult to replace I want to prolong it's life to maximum and if I charge overnight, which I do often, don't care if it even takes 6hrs. BTW if the faulty cable is the real culprit, it's a very good news and shipping of N7 should resume soon. It would be shame if such a good phone got bad reputation undeserved.

Actually, it's not. It was reported on quite a few sites that Samsung sourced the battery packs locally for it's variations. So the South Korean company that made the battery packs for the South Korean release is the one that is possibly the cause of all this hoopla. The few handsets out of the millions produced that have had issues with these crap cables and chargers have been in South Korea. None of the EU/NorthAm phones have been reported to have had this happen at all. Maybe unnamed sources that aren't Samsung themselves should be taken with a grain of salt. Maybe we should wait for an official statement from Samsung before running in circles and screaming the sky is falling. It's a thought.
I'm not saying it couldn't be a massive, global recall but based on the 30+ articles I've read .. most of which messaged to me by my iPhone owning friends .. this seems like a bad batch in South Korea. I had a gasket issue on my motorcycle that was part of a recall .. will I stop buying that brand because of it. No. And before you start talking about fire and explosions .. oil spewing out of a gasket onto a tire while doing 70mph ... same thing.

oh yeah? turn off a key feature of the phone, and problem solved?
if the camera was faulty, would you simply not use it, and be okay with it?
the iris scanner, if it didn't work, would you just disable it?

Anyone found an external battery charger that works?

I have a couple of spare batteries for my V20, but can't find an external battery charger that works. I've bought a couple that claim to be able to charge V20 batteries, but neither of them do.
Does anyone know of the charger that can be purchased in the UK which actually works?

The first one looks like one that I already have (and doesn't work). I haven't come across the 2nd one.
So have you tried them, or are you still waiting for them to be delivered?
Like I say i have them both, they both work fine. The second one charges faster than the first but I like the small form factor of the first one linked, it's very good for travel.
I'm using the LG OEM external charger in the US. It works great. It was sold only as a package including a new battery. I would be surprised if LG didn't make a version for the UK market. If they do, I would recommend it.

Hmmm....odd that the first one doesn't work for me. There is a voltage from the pins on the charger but the neither of my batteries charges when I insert them (and I have even left them overnight).
I've ordered the 2nd one to see if it's any better.
LG did have the BCK-5200 charging kit for the V20, but it seems to be discontinued. It's certainly unavailable in the UK.

So I received this charger this morning, and left a battery charging in it for 3 hours. The LED on the charger changed from blue to pink, but the battery didn't charge at all. I checked the pins with a multitester and the charger was delivering current, but the battery charge wasn't increasing.
Any ideas??

What, all 4 of them? (I have tried charging 2 batteries in the new charger, and all 4 batteries in the other 2 chargers that I have bought and tried). None of the batteries have charged in any of the chargers.
All of them charge fine in the phone.
I've had the external battery charger from the first link for three years. Pretty much since the phone came out. It is always work for OEM and aftermarket batteries for me.

Yes I also have that charger - it doesn't charge any of the batteries that I've tried with it (only 3 of my 4 batteries will physically fit into it, and none of them will charge).
I really can't work this out - how come these chargers work for others but not for me? Surely all 4 of my batteries can't be faulty, particularly when all 4 charge perfectly well when they are in the phone.

The light is blue when it is not charging. And red when it is charging. You could try to check the voltage if you have a meter. Or it might be a faulty charger. Just to guess.

Yes the light is blue on mine when I plug it in, then switches to pink when I insert a battery. I checked the voltage across the charger pins and it is 5V.

Correct - the batteries are showing the same (or slightly lower) % charge after 2-3 hours left in the charger.

I've tried two power sources - one is 5V 2A, the other is 5V 2.4A.
Is it possible that the batteries are actually being charged, but that the phone isn't reporting the correct level of charge when the batteries are inserted?

Try to leave one in over night and see if the light on the charger goes back to blue.
