Did you ever set up multiuser? Maybe it thinks you aren't the first user.
I think I might be having the same issue

With regards to your problem about ptp and mtp, I too cannot change those settings. I select one, and exit. Then when I return, the choice I made has disappeared?
But I can turn off and on the developer settings.

I played with carbon. But now when I plug the tablet on my computer I can see only the files for picture.
I remember I changed a parameter like tpi to tpe(????)
Now I would like to revert back so I can access my download file.
Your help is welcome....

For file system access you need to be connected as an MTP device. The PTP is only for media. Also, you need usb debugging turned on in developer options.
On 4.2.1 stock the MTP/PTP toggle control is not in a completely obvious place
Settings -> Storage -> Menu -> USB Computer Connection
Both MTP and PTP leave much to be desired.
Please help if you can
My first 32gb Nexus 7 had no problems showing up as an mtp device on windows 7.
Am running a rooted 4.1.2 and all is well with mtp as well as adb, toolkits, etc.
I purchased one more as a gift, and that one can only be set to ptp in the internal storage settings.
If I try to set it to mtp, it takes, but does not show up in windows or in adb.
The only way to see it or use adb or a toolkit on it, is to set it to ptp which shows up as a camera with read only permissions.
Both tablets are using the same rom etc.
Have tried this on 2 PC's (win 7 as well as xp)
Any Ideas?
Thanks
On my (rooted) Stock 4.2.1 tablet, MTP mode only seems to show up if ADB Debugging is enabled.
Sort of odd; PTP will work whether or not ADB Debugging is turned on, but MTP only shows up when ADB debugging is also enabled.
If you have not enabled "Developer Options" on the tablet, go to
Settings->About tablet
and tap on the last entry ("Build number") 6 or 7 times in succession. This will allow the following menu item to appear under settings:
Settings-> {} Developer options
You can enable ADB debugging from there.
The PTP/MTP toggle control is at
Settings -> Storage -> Menu (top RH corner) -> USB Computer connection
good luck

Thanks, but I guess I was not very clear.
ADB Debugging is turned on but only works in PTP mode.
MTP does not work at all, even though it's checked.

Even after reading this and your 1st post, I am still a little uncertain.
I *think* you are saying that you want to get MTP working on the second unit. And I *think* you are also saying that (additionally) ADB only seems to work when you have PTP mode selected.
Reading between the lines - are you testing things with the same computer for both tablets? (Or, another way to put that, if the answer to this previous question is no, do you see any "Unknown Device" messages in the Device Manager when you toggle things around?)
I fooled around with mine not more than 30 minutes ago. Leaving it plugged into the PC the entire time (Win 7 Pro x64), I could toggle USB Debugging on/off and back and forth between PTP/MTP. Although I didn't actually try a live ADB session in both MTP/PTP modes, the file browser thing would pop up for PTP mode no matter what I had ADB debugging set to, and for MTP mode that would only happen if I had ADB debugging enabled. At no time did I see any unrecognized devices in the Device Manager.
And I think that what I just said above doesn't help you.... arghh.

First of all thanks for the interest.
Bottom line is as follows.
MTP mode does not work period.
However....
when I boot into recovery, (TWRP) the pc sees the usb connection, and I can use adb commands.
So it leads me to conclude that there is something off in the System files. But (and it's driving me nuts)
they are a clone of the first (MTP functioning) Nexus 7.
Thanks again
@OP
You can uninstall the drivers(all of the n7 drivers), then unplug, then replug it in, then let it install its drivers again. This solved the mtp issues other users had.
Hi everyone, I'm trying to mount the ZUK as an hard drive, but I can't find a way to do it. It doesn't appear on the desktop and Android File Transfer says "Could not connect to device". I've tried with SyncMate to use the option "mount as drive", but no result as well.
Is there anyone who's found a way to solve this issue?
Make sure your phone is on mtp mode not charging mode, just drop down the cm icon on the left side of status bar and check.
Of course I knew that, but it just doesn't work. I've also tried several times to switch between mtp and ptp without success.

Even I have the same problem with Marshmallow. It just doesn't work every time. Rebooting to recovery instantly shows my Phone in Android File Transfer, but not always when booted up. I've fallen back to pushing and pulling files/folders using ADB.
Thank you deepakdtg! I'll try the recovery mode to see what happens! I was considering the option to use ADB but it's not handy at all to transfer files... I'm using this Sync Mate app, it doesn't show the phone as a disk, but it's quite easy to transfer folders and files
Unfortunately even in recovery mode I've the same problem. Ok, I'll use ADB and SyncMate :\
Hi, just a slight problem. I happen to select charge only for the USB connection and now I can't unselect it to transfer files. I checked online and see in storage in the overflow menu when I select it USB computer connection comes up put when I press it I just get a message "USB is now disconnected". Nothing else. How do I reselect MTP again?
Thanks,

Just go to Settings than select Developer Options, scroll down to find Select USB Configuration. It's a long page, so scroll down slowly and carefully.

No, I don't have that option under the Developer Option.

My developer options doesn't have this setting. I'm not sure how to do a screen shot but under that section is:
On
Development tools
Take bug report
Advanced reboot
Desktop backup password
Stay awake
HDCP checking
Enable Bluetooth HCI snoop log
Process stat
Root access
Updaye Cyanogen recovery.
Then it goes into Debugging.
Should I be looking somewhere else?
Thanks,
I have found that I can't enable Android Debugging which has the switch greyed out.
I see it says in the subheading "Device is in charging mode, USB debugging is disabled".
Maybe if I can enable the debugging somehow I can get the phone out of charge only mode.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
I have found its not actually greyed out. Just not responding to tapping.
Hi see this problem has been mentioned here:
http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...sb-debugging-after-upgrading-to-android-5-1-1.
'm trying to find "persist.sys.usb.config" to delete it as a fix but haven't found it yet.
Already tried that. Selecting 'USB Computer Connection' displaying message 'USB is now disconnected' (even when it's not connected to a cable)

Seems like you are using custom ROM, I'm on stock, nothing much I can do to help. Is the driver correctly installed? How did the Windows response to USB connection with USB debugging off? With the USB debugging on, it will ask for authorization when connected. I believe "persist.sys.usb.config" is part of build.prop, so it's kinda risky to play with, but if you manage to find that line (you may simply add # in front of it, just to be safe and in case you need it in the future).
Hi, thanks for your reply.
Windows shows nothing when I plug the phone in. It use to come up with the phone and SD card fine.
I'ts just that I can't turn debugging on. I'll have a look in build.prop and try the #
Thanks,
Any ideas where I put the #? I have attached the build.prop file.
Thanks,
I can't seem to get the authorization pop up to allow adb to work. I have usb debugging enabled and adb shows the device as offline when using the command adb devices. Has anyone else experienced this issue before or have any way to fix it?

I am having the same issue. ADB will not work at all with this tablet
Same here
I have the same problem; enabling USB debugging in the Developer Options menu does not seem to have any effect. Closing the settings app and restarting it results in the option being switched "off" again.
This on an unrooted, locked stock device with EMUI version 5.0 / Android 7.0
Weird ....

I work around this by enabling usb debugging, going into another setting menu option, then back to developer options, disabling it, enabling it, adb kill-server, adb devices, trying different combinations and eventually it works.. It's a real pain but eventually it works. Once the computer is trusted I don't need to do this anymore.
