Is it really that easy to install custom roms? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Or am I missing something?
Flash custom recovery through Odin, flash custom rom?
No root beforehand, no unlocking the bootloader?
Thx :good:

Yeah international i9505. I know it's not simlocked, but I'm used to Nexus devices where you need to unlock the bootloader 1st (the same with Asus Transformer tabs) before one do anything.
So... I need to be rooted first before I can flash a custom recovery?

Yep you dhont need ulcoking bootloader just go t android devolpment and djembay thread you will find odin end rooted stock rom

just flash the rooted version in dev.
How am I supposed to flash a zip when I have no custom recovery?...motochopper says failure all the time tried it twice.. is the mdn method for sprint s4? It says gt-19505

You don't have to be rooted to install a recovery. Just use Odin to install a recovery, then use that to flash the zip.

on top of stock rom, my stock rom was JeallyBean 4.2.2 i337 mf3 not mdl and i read there are no mf3 files for odin
So i managed to fix this problem just by downloading stock rom for my phone and flashing with safestrap: Galaxy S4 rooted Stock ROM AT&T SGH-i337 MF3 (i found that on google)
The rom i downloader is rooted. and it said to install Loki after finishing flashing rom but i managed not to.
after you finished flashing you need to install also: jflteatt-MF3-modules(attachment) : this will make your wifi to work.
Every thing i just said, worked for me! do this at your own risk! im not responsible for any damages!!!
Wait what if you flash MDL with safestrap, and use goo.im for TWRP? It could possibly brick but just an idea.

It wouldn't. The bootloader is still MF3 no matter what you do to the system, and so it will still be locked with no way to bypass it.

[Q] I need assistance please!

I want to update my i9505 to the latest android 4.3 through Odin but I don't want the new Knox bootloader, could someone please give me any instructions of how I could achieve this? I don't want to install the "custom" stock roms.
*EDIT*: Could someone also give me instructions on how to compile the edited firmware.
I tried to Google it but to no avail.
I shall be grateful to anyone who helps.

In order to remain on your old bootloader you will need to root. Any reason why you don't want to? Root, install a custom recovery then flash the pre rooted rom. They are stock based.

Thank you for your reply, I'm rooted with custom recovery. However I wish to create myself a Odin copy for emergency purposes, I currently have the official MGA firmware update for Odin. I want to create a Odin flash-able firmware update without the new bootloader,
EDIT: After going through the thread all the firmware files include the new know bootloader ;(
As far as I know you can't flash via odin. I suggest you flash the CWM version this has no bootloader. As your already rooted using the knox free cwm version is the safest bet at the moment.

No modem, you can install that separately via Odin as we can't flash modems using CWM. It contains stock rom and stock kernel.

Update I9505 to 4.3/4.4

Hi.
Im on 4.2.2 with root (knox free) and would like to update my S4 I9505 to 4.3/4.4 and root without tripping knox, so that I can have 4G from my carrier.
Is it possible to do this. Would I need a knox free rom, because I had a S4 before which I updated and the wifi and carrier signals stopped working along with other stuff.
Thanks in advance

If you have a KnoxFree 4.2.2 then Flash a Custom recovery and then download any 4.4.2 or .4.3 Custom rom and flash it via recovery . then Update your Modem to 4.3/4.4.2 , to fix your Dropping signal issue ..If your Gonna flash let say 4.4.2 custom rom, then Flash only the zip rom and custom kernel iE Ktkernel or Jeboo kernel

Thanks

Also can I just not update modem to get LTE since my carrier only added it on 4.3rom.

If your Flashing a Cynogenmod then feel free to follow the Dev's Instruction. Because all you need to do is Flash the Rom and Update your Modem but not the LTE aka WifiFix aka NON-HLOS. and for 4.4.2 You need to flash a working kernel Jeboo/KT .

I've decided to unroot, do i have to do that fix before i install a recovery (Cwm or Twrp)?
From my understanding you have to be rooted to place a recovery on your device (Cwm or Twrp)...

you unroot by flashing the stock Odin file, or using your root method to unroot.
there is no recovery available. safestrap is our wonderfully built recovery alternative due to a locked bootloader on the 900v. do not try and flash cwm or twrp.
