[Q] Strings Attached to an Add-a-line at BestBuy? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I'll be adding a line for a GS4 at our Best Buy because I have 2 smartphones that I'll get a better trade in value on. I am wondering if anyone has ever had any issues when they make changes to that new line after it has been changed. Here's the deal: I recently destroyed my 1st GS4 (read here) while on vacation so I'm adding a line to get another one and then moving the phone back to my original #. Now I know at Walmart they have a policy that if any features or the phone is moved to a different line within a certain time period Walmart will bill your credit card for the full retail value of the phone.
Does Best Buy have a similar policy in place or do they not care what happens after you leave the store? I can explain a little more in depth why Walmart does this b/c I work at AT&T, but that'd be a tangent to my question. Thanks!

I have done this with best buy, nothing happened. I don't think it matters as long as you keep the line, or pay the etf if you cancel it, it wouldn't matter.

Adding another line but activating the EVO on a current line...

I'm on a family plan with sprint and I am planning to add a friend of mine for the EVO 4G. The plan is to give him my hero and buy the EVO with the new line discount but activate the EVO on my existing line.We moved to Sprint from AT&T and have done this multiple times (including having the store employees help us do it) and have never had any problems.
I went into the sprint store today to make sure everything was kosher and according to the employee I talked to this is fraud. He said that I would be ineligible for the MFG rebate and they may even charge my account for the full price of the phone. Is any of this true?
Basically what I really need to know is...
1. Can I add the new line with RadioShack and have them activate the phone on my line and the Hero on the new line?
2. Is it likely that they will charge me more than $200 for doing so?
3. The employee also mentioned waiting 30 days to switch the phones, is this necessary?
On a lighter note he did inform me that my city (Jacksonville, FL) will be getting 4G by the end of July

that employee is a retard...
to my knowledge you have to activate the new phone on the new line first... but there is no time limit that you must keep it on said line
Actually I've talked to various different Sprint employees and they have told me that if you open a new line, you can switch the phone over, but you HAVE to keep the 2nd line open for 30-45 days. If you close the 2nd line immediately after getting the discount and transfer the Evo to your primary line -- that is considered fraud.
However, if you open a second line and have the Evo activated on that said line -- then you CAN close your primary line with no issues, even if it's right after opening the 2nd one. You'd lose your number, but you wouldn't have to wait 30-45 days.
Good luck!

Oh I have no intention of closing either line, I just want to have the EVO on my line. My friend is planning on staying on our plan with my Hero. He's also going to port his number over so we can't just switch phone numbers (it would be too confusing for our other friends)
If you have a third cdma phone you can try:
Main Line: Add third phone in place of Hero
New Line: Add Hero to this line
Main Line: Replace third cdma phone with new Evo
You can't do a direct swap from the Hero to your new line because the phone will be activated.
You other alt if to find a good sprint store that can do this for you.
I am doing the same thing. The guy at Radio Shack told me he has heard of Sprint charging me if I don't keep the phone on that line from 90 days...I laughed at him. I say it would make sense that Sprint could charge me if I canceled the second line before 30/60/90 days, but like you I will be keeping the line open. I am not worried about the threats of being charged. Sprint customer service is usually pretty good about making customers happy.
the main thing that they are talking about is u dont keep the phone on the line u activated it with the discounts (upgrade or new activation) for 30 days u wont get ur mail in rebate back on the line thats y it takes 10-14 weeks to get it back because no matter when u mail in the form they dont start working it for 30 days after u buy the phone if u dont care about the mail in rebate then u can esn swap all u want they wont charge u for esn swapping the dev within the 30 days other than keeping the mail in rebate

I gave up trying to read that without proper English formatting.
Im getting the Evo on a new line since my upgrade isnt until October. I spoke to Sprint and they said I could transfer the phone numbers between the old line and the new line and then I can cancel the old line. Basically I am keeping the new contract but with my old number so their are no issues of fraud.

1. No. They have to activate the new phone on the new line to get your pricing to come up right, and to get paid properly for the sale.
2. n/a, see answer 1
3. While you might be able to get around that by calling sprint, it screws over the store that sold it to you as they will get charged back for the subsidy on your phone. (Yes, I realise most customers dont care, but those of us working in the stores have to eat too ya know?)

It's just a retarded system. /shrug
I did'nt know that Radio Shack was dealing with the mfc rebate. Are they? I was assuming it was similar to Best Buy, $50 card, but with $20 accessory thrown in.
After reading this I called Best Buy, I have 3 lines, one upgradable now. I am going to use that one for my Evo, with my phonenumber, and give my Hero, to my husband, and switch his number over to that from old phone which is the upgradeable line. (hope that make sense)
BestBuy, said no problem, they just do a Hardware .something lol, and I just need to make sure I bring in the upgradable phone for verification. But again, not deaing with any Mfc rebate in this case.

Adding additional line/phone to account RE: upfront payment

Hey all,
I just have a question for the people knowledgeable with the inner-workings of account structure with Sprint.
I need to add an additional line to my current plan and was going to pick up an EVO for myself and give my current Hero to my brother (whom I'm opening the additional line for). I was just on Sprints website, doing all the work, and toward the end, it said that all charges will be placed on my regular monthly bill. Seems logical, sure.
My question is, is this a policy explicitly carried out online, or would I be able to walk into a Best Buy or Sprint store today and have the same thing occur? If that is the case, I'll go set this all up today via a store front if I'd be able to apply all charges to my bill.
Thanks for any input
Sometimes sure. But, other times you may not get the same deal in the store than you would online.
Couple points for your sake:
1. New phone from Sprint, needs to stay on the line it was purchased on, for 30 days minimum to get the $100 rebate.
2. You can pay $199 oop at Best Buy/The Shack and switch it after the transaction is complete.
3. Not sure how the $10 EVO charge is applied. Would it be to the account or the number?
Just some thoughts. Have fun with the EVO!
Well thank you all for taking the time to lend advice. I ended up going to Best Buy to talk to someone about what I need to do.
First off, the guy said they didn't have anymore EVOs, nor did any retailer in the vicinity. Then he told me that I would have to upgrade to a family plan to add this other line for my brother. I'd be going from $69.99 to $129.99 give or take $20. I totally forgot to think about that aspect. I called my brother to tell him no dice unless he's willing to fork over at least something to help offset the additional cost -- he said thanks, but no thanks.
So, I get home and get curious -- log back onto Sprint.com to see how much it would be for me to just buy the phone outright. I went ahead and just put it on my tab. I'm a nut for gadgets, and have been more than financially frugal for well over a year, so I figured I'd buy myself something for once, lol.
Anyhow, thanks again!

I asked the same question to sprint and basically was told the same. Except the $10 goes with the phone and not the line of service. So if you buy from the shack or BB Mobile you can change the phone to a different line and the $10 will follow the phone. However like stated before if you wait for the rebate then you will have to wait for 30 days to switch the phone to a different line.

Buy One Get One Free: AT&T and T-Mobile

My wife went from the Iphone 3G to the Focus about 2 or so weeks back.... a few days after the new windows phones were released. I myself have a tilt 2 but was ready for an upgrade. We went in to look at the new phones and at that time they didnt know about the BOGO offer that was coming up for Black friday (and presumably running through out the holidays). She went ahead and got her phone. Today we went in and asked if we could still get the free phone. As she was still in the 30 day grace period we figured it wouldn't be an issue. Sure enough.... a quick call to the manager and I had the phone in my hand. The only extra I paid for was the Zag Shield.
I'm not sure WHAT had to be done to get it. Whether you needed to add another line etc but since we already had 4 lines on our family plan we had decided to add my mom on for her Christmas. We told him we wanted to add a new line as well although he didnt actually tie the new Focus to that new line, and it didnt get tied to my number yet either. I'm not sure but I do think you need to start a new line (which luckily enough we already planned on doing) to get the BOBO deal with AT&T. He seemed to imply I could get it for free too by using my upgrade status which was also open from the original purchase of the Fuze 2 years ago.
I figure if in the new year they release some newer cooler phones (ie one with the same size screen but has a keyboard) I'll use my upgrade for that and sell the Focus off.
So anyone who did get their focus (or any other windows phone for that matter) early and wants to go in to get their free phone go and and schmooze and you'll be walking out with the second phone in your hand!
Good Luck!

confirmed by an att rep.... if youre within the 30 day period and are eligible or you add a line, they will restock your phone and resell it to you and you get the new one... just a restock fee, but well worth the free phone.... did mine this eve, took 10 min to get it done... good deal on a solid set of phones...
Good for you guys!!
I'm stuck so no deals for me since I'm not in the upgrade timeframe. Unless someone wants to sell thier free Focus for a nice holiday discount?
I had bought 2 focuses (foci?) at 2 seperate ATT stores about a week apart from each other. I went to one store and got the money credited back to my credit card. I then received a call from the second store and they told me they would credit the account the amount of one of the phones since they noticed I had bought 2 phones within a week of each other.
If someone wants to sell the one he got for free at a fair price, please let me know

That's fairly similar as to how I got my fuze... they had some promo going on and they had a programming glitch where you could put the coupon on multiple times... which I did. I got that phone for free. A year later when I got my tilt 2 my wife got it for 100 dollars upfront and then AT&T sent me a $50.00 visa gift card, so really the phone was 50 dollars. HTC at the time had this promo where they would accept ANY smart phone trade in when you bought a tilt 2 and they'd pay you 100 dollars. I sent in my HTC Vouge and they gave me 100 dollars... so really I got paid 50 dollars for getting a new phone.
Then once this promo came along, well suffice to say my wife just rolled her eyes... yet another free phone
Does this only work if you purchased it at a real AT&T store? I bought my focus at a 'CellularWorld' about 15 days ago.

Correct. As far as I understand. You could try returning your Focus and re-purchasing at your local AT&T?
Nobody interested in selling your second Focus?

I am just guessing that you cant get another one for free if you purchased it off contract...IS it only with a new line or contract to get the free phone?
I've contacted AT&T about this. You MUST get a new line OR upgrade an existing line that is eligible for upgrade. Since I want to give the free phone to my dad, they did say 2 things that kept my interest though:
they can be flexible on 'eligibility'
I can transfer the phone to my dad's account, as long as he's eligible and an existing AT&T subscriber
One other thing - gotta do it within the 30 day grace period.
How much each store follows these rules, of course, would depend on the store

Correct. Two-year contract and data plan are required on both lines. AT&T makes minimum $600 ($15 data + $10 add a line = $25/mo minimum) over two year period off you per phone. That's how they can afford to give you one for free.
I'm planning to upgrade my phone n get me a Focus, since it's BOGO deal right now. I'm wondering if this plan will work or not. Currently Im in a family plan and my dad is able to upgrade his phone too and planing to give the 2nd phone to him. however, since he's a tech noob im going to go head take the phone, but cancel his data plan so he can use his old phone. Then just sell the 2nd phone. do you think AT&T will allow me to do this, since my dad would not use the Focus.
My sister had done this before, she got an iPhone n hate it. So she use her old phone, canceled the data plan and sell her iphone on eBay.

I didn't even have to go through that much hassle. I told them I'd bought the first one in the last 30 days and they gave me a second one for free. They did charge an $18 upgrade fee on the line I upgraded but they didn't make me go through any "resell" or "restock" ordeal. They just put in a promo code for it and gave it to me.
Amazon is selling the phones for $.01 with a 2 yr plan.
For 2 qualified plans, that's a whopping $.02. Just a tad better than AT&T's BOGO deal.

Take a look at the fine print for things like the early termination fee. Don't fool yourself into thinking that Amazon is only making $.01 on the phone.
yep not only do you get dinged with an early termination fee from ATT but one from Amazon as well... I think Amazon's is bigger then ATT's actually. Not to mention I believe you only get that on new lines.... not ones you are adding onto an existing family plan. I could be wrong here.

General Epic/Sprint question.. (ETF related question)

So my wife has the transform and she hates it. I was thinking about getting her the Epic but neither of us are due for upgrades so I would have to pay retail.
I have an idea though.. Wondering if any 'insiders' know if this might work...
we have plenty of 'approval' for extra lines on our account.. we have an available line on the account as well.. I was thinking about getting an Epic for $--- price, on a new line (on our acct.) w/ new 2 yr contract.. then swap her device to the new line and the Epic to her line (to keep the phone numbers in order)... then after a couple days, I was thinking about cancelling the new line and paying the ETF.. The way I see the math, ETF + promo rate is less than full retail.
Just brainstorming a way to keep 'momma' happy..
Any other ideas ?? will this work ?? My wife thinks we might need to keep the phone/line active for 30 or 45 days or they'll charge us full retail.
Just curious..
For the amount of work that would take, the fraud potential and the cost you would just be better off keeping an eye on craigslist. I often see them going for $250 or less. Besides if you really want to go that route wait for the evo 3d or if you want something available now go for the nexus s 4g (unless having a hardware keyboard is necessary).
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
From what I've seen, you would have to keep the second line for 30 days, and at least until after the rebate clears. If you really want to avoid the ETF, you can force roaming 24/7, and let Sprint cancel that line.
**Disclaimer**
I have no idea if this would work or not. It would be best to get a Sprint employee to confirm this.

Not sure what the stores are like in your area, but our Sprint stores here are all franchise. They recently started selling Refurb Evos and Epics for $120 straight up, no contract. Might be something to consider if it's an option for you.
The phones are worth what they cost. I wouldn't go out of my way trying to defraud the company you are relying on for phone service just to save a few dollars.
That being said, I noticed the contract price went down $100 since a week or two ago when I was on sprints site.... used to be 249/199 Epic/Evo, now it's 199/149 Evo/Epic... interesting.
You can buy preowned Epics from BestBuy free and clear for like 275 or so last I heard. That and check Craigslist, it isn't uncommon to find them for 100-200 there as well... just be sure to transfer the phone before you leave the sellers house to make sure it's legit.
Personally I would just buy a new one. They are around $300 +/- on ebay all the time. Like I said before, they are worth every penny anyway.
thanks for the quick replies
Definitely some good info here.. gonna go check out craigslist for a deal..
I went into our local sprint store (not a corp store) and wanted to play w/ the Nexus S.. the employee said "I have them but I can't turn it on because it will auto activate".. I said no it won't.. it will try to do hands free activation, fail, then let you play from home screen (I think)..he wouldn't let me play with it..
I know we have a corp store (repair center too) that has devices turned on and connected via wifi that can be played with.. might have to stop by there for a little tinkering action.
either way, thanks for all the suggestions.. I've got some work to do.

I have ubuntdroid beta installed on her phone (from sdx-developers).. clockwork mod (not sure which version).. I have her system partition formatted as EXT4, data as RFS (for stability, no corrupt data) and cache as EXT2 for speed/stability ... it's not too bad but I still manage to break it LOL...
the transform uses swupdate utility like the moment did. I'm very familiar w/ the moment so messing with the transform was easy.
I'm not positive if non corporate account people can do this, but with our corp accound, we can put it on hold for around $8 per month. You might look into getting a new line and put the current on hold then put transform on craigs list fr 75 bucks or so. Maybe even hang around the sprint store and try to sell it out of contract to someone. We did that with some blackberrys and it went well. Our instore rep helped us out and sold a couple to some of her good customers that didn't want to pay full price for a phone when they dropped it in the pool or something like that. Lots of people don't get tep

I'm so confused about the terms of that deal. Do they require you to keep both lines active and if you cancel one, they charge you the full price of just the one phone?
How do they prevent you from selling one right away, cancelling the one new line, and paying for the one phone? No more monthly payments for the phone you keep?
i think the fine print says you have to keep the line for several months. You can't disconnect the line or you'd be charged the amount of the Free phone.
If you need 2 lines though, doen't stop you from moving the SIM card to another phone and sell the 2nd GS7..
Basically keep the 2nd line open till the rebate arrives, payoff the phone, and then cancel the line

You still qualify for the offer.
I work for t-mobile. You still qualify if you pre-ordered your phone. Just add a line and get the second phone.
And if you've already added a line, if it was done on February 23rd or later, then you still qualify to get the second phone free.
Wait.. i ordered my service on march 2nd.. and i got the 4 line 10gb deal.. 2 sim cards and 1 gs7 and 1 ip6.
So i have to add a line to qualify? Or do i already qualify?
If you've already added a line between February 23 and today, then that line qualifies you for the BOGO.
Also, both phones have to be on EIP. None can be on Jump on Demand leasing.
Here ya go
I bought two s7s and got two free and then sold the two free ones. Just waiting on the rebate cards now and I'll have gotten all of them free as selling them covered the costs.
I just hope that out of respect of the sales associates that processed the sales, people aren't cancelling the line they added to get this promo. Just know that if you cancel the line within 4 months, the associate gets hit with a deactivation, loses money, and can possibly get fired.
They're not gonna get fired.. It's company policy. I also clearly explained to the sales associate what I was going to do and she had no issues.
Lol yeah I assure you nobody is going to be happy about getting hit with fraud. When that happens, the associate loses money and the company loses money. As you can imagine, when the company loses money, they start cracking down on the ones that are losing them money. Company policy is that there is a 4 month window where if the customer cancels their line, the associate and the store is hurt by it and get charged for it. Do enough fraud transactions, and you get fired on top of it.
Nobody cares what you do with the phones. If you already have a phone that you're happy with, then we even encourage selling off the phones to make some money off of it, as long as nobody gets hurt by the customers taking advantage and basically stealing $700-800 devices.
Before buying BOGO, I checked twice with T-Mobile by phone. We have a six line family plan using only five lines. At the store, the associate also had no problem. The deal is that we keep the sixth line active only until the rebate arrives. We also arranged the numbers to keep our current ones. Perhaps it mattered that one of our current phones was paid off and the other had only two payments left. I look at it, and perhaps T-Mobile did too, as customer retention. In all events, it's hardly strealing when one is completely up front.
Anybody asked Legere if T-Mobile plans to do a BOGO without requiring a new line? How much does T-Mobile stand to make on the new line-- cost of the second phone? Does the new line count as a new subscriber so they can use that stat in marketing?

Like I said, if you cancel any features or lines within 4 months, you're taking money from the associate that helped you. I'm assuming the guys up in corporate did the math and concluded that a customer has to keep their line/feature for about 4 months for the company to make a profit, since that's their policy. The deal is supposed to be that you bring t-mobile more customers (the new line) and they give you a free phone for it. But if you're just going to cancel the line and run off with the phone, that's basically going back on the deal and stealing the phone. It's just like back when I used to work for the other carriers before everyone started following the No Contract thing T-Mobile made famous. Day after day I'd see people coming in to open new accounts because carriers were offering free phones with two year contracts, and then just cancel their service so they can walk away with 2 or more brand new free phones. That's what we call fraud and it's our job to filter through everyone and turn away the fraud. That's why the company takes away money from associates when that happens.
T-Mobile recently did a BOGO maybe a month ago without the need of a new line, where the second phone was half off. Since T-Mobile doesn't do contracts, the BOGO half off with no catch was a huge deal to begin with. I highly doubt they'd give one for free without there being any requirements.

I think its safe to assume that Samsung is HEAVILY subsidizing these BOGO offers, since its happening on all carriers. I doubt TMo would require the new line anticipating people are just going to cancel them after three months, the churn rates would be awful. They're probably thinking most people will just leave the third line and pay the extra 10 bucks a month.
Yup seeing other carriers do same for gs7. Worst case move the number to new BOGO line and cancel the old line. Easy as that.
BOGO ends tomorrow.
Who has already received there Pre-paid Mastercard for there free device.how long did it take to receive it. Thanks
