[Q] How to restore stock recovery? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I thought the GPS issue I was having was app related as it seemed to smooth out but it's once again popped up and I need to return this sad S4.
I've searched and read the threads and have only found how to unroot the phone not restore the stock recovery. Am I missing something simple like "duh, just remove twrp"?
As always your guys help is appreciated!

Flash the stock firmware through ODIN and then do a factory reset.
Or you can use Kies to do an emergency firmware restore, but it doesn't seem to be an option for every one. You can use the "search" function to help answer any questions you have about either method.

Thanks!...I'll give them a shot later today.

Clockworkmod Recovery Stuck at .pcsync_stream

Hey people im having A huge problem (took me ALL afternoon to get here) ok so i flashed a bad ROM, Odin'ed back to stock (but when i did that it always said "wipe data failed", and now im trying to restore a backup in recovery and it keeps on freezing at "pcsync_stream" and it also froze one time at "HALGPS_conf.cfg", i replied on a post that had a similar problem but no one answered so i made my own, here is the link to the other post if you need more info:
PLS REPLY AND THANK YOU!
I ran into the same problem today. I'll keep an eye on this post and let you know if I come up with anything.
WAudette...
Did your bad ROM also flash a new kernel? Nandroid doesn't flash the kernel back, so you might need to do that as well. I have no idea if this is THE problem, but it is a common problem.
Good luck.
I've run into this before myself, when I forgot to disable the Voodoo lagfix before flashing something. You could try disabling it using ADB if you know how to do that, but that didn't work in my case. You're likely going to have to use ODIN. The instructions are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8129898&postcount=1 under "Did you flash something before disabling Voodoo?", Fix 1.

[Q] MF3 Need to Factory Reset & Root!

This is my first post on here, but I've used these forums before to root my S3 and at one time my current S4. My problem is with MF3... I used
this post [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387577] to root my phone once, but since I couldn't install TWRP or CWM, I thought I could downgrade the software version with Odin. Well, I was wrong, and I unrooted my phone in the process... Upon trying the same technique I mentioned earlier, it now says "permission denied" upon entering the first prompt <<cd /mnt/extSdCard>>
AND, I can't use Odin to factory reset. Using posts such as this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZTTTk7vbVM] doesn't seem to work either. When putting my phone into download mode, I pull up Odin, and select the file in the link (the software file .tar I think), it says it fails shortly after starting.
Really, I need help with two things:
1. Obtaining root access
2. Resetting phone to factory settings
I might not have to do a factory reset, but I've noticed my wifi will NOT enable since I unrooted and this is a big concern for me. I know that all my troubles are because the bootloader is locked (and I'm messing with stuff I don't fully understand...), which is why I'd like help obtaining root again in the final hope that Safestrap [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448925] is the answer I'm looking for so I can use my favorite ROM, LiquidSmooth!
PLEASE help me any way you can! I've tried to provide as much information as I can think of, but I'm new to this stuff, so bear with me. I have no real experience in rooting and whatnot, but so far, I've followed directions by users of this forum, so I have faith that there's a solution to this mayhem. Thanks for any help you can provide! =)
Your first mistake was not reading about what you can and can not do while on mf3. Your second was trying to put a recovery on. And your third was trying to use Odin to down grade your firmware.
I'm surprised your not having issues booting. The only way right now to get your phone back to normal is to see if best buy will flash the mf3 firmware for you
Edit, read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45359306

I guess you're trying to be helpful, but your condescending tone isn't helping. I READ everything, I just don't UNDERSTAND everything... The second paragraph actually provided some help, so thanks for that. I was just hoping for something I could do myself to re obtain root so that I can try the Safestrap method I provided in my original post. I will post a reply to the root method post and see if anyone can help me there, since that's my main issue is not being able to get root access back. I don't have any problems booting though, only when I boot into recovery mode do I get a loop in which I just have to get to the Samsung warning screen and select "cancel (reboot phone)". Thanks for reading this and providing some direction.

No, your main issue is that you don't understand what you are reading and you shouldn't be doing anything to your phone until you do. Dozens of people just like you pass through this forum everyday with similar issues because they didn't read or take the time to understand what it was that they did read. Someone takes the time to tell them to read and learn and they don't listen or think they don't have to. Then, they screw their phones up and come back here crying for help. So it's not a condescending tone, it's people getting tired of the same crap. You admitted that you didn't understand everything you read so why would you do anything to your phone before you do understand it? Can you not see the problem?

Soft brick after TWRP install, goes straight to Odin Mode.

So I rooted my device, and tried to get TWRP after not being able to get CWM, not knowing about the whole locked bootloader issue, and ended up getting back into my device. So then I tried doing a factory reset from there, and ended up not being able to get into Android. What do I do from here?

I guess you are on MF3 firmware (you didn't say)? I suggest you do some reading. It would have saved you a lot of trouble to start with, but it's never too late to learn from your mistakes. Start by reading the "pinned" threads in the General and Q & A sections and the read any thread that has MF3 in the title or search perimeters. There is a lot of information you need to know (should have already known) that you will learn along the way to figuring out how to get your phone back...but I will give you a hint, search for SMART or Best buys.

OK, so I managed to get a pit file that lets me go into Android, but there's still no recovery mode. :/ I don't really have the option to go to Best Buy, but I don't know what smart is. Is there a way to get my default recovery back? I am running on MF3. I will start looking into SMART, though.

2 options...
1. Go to bestbuy, let them re-flash your phone using SMART. (You mentioned this is not an option for you, but this is the best option...)
2. Try to upgrade to 4.3 (MJ6 leak) that was posted in the General section. You will need to read the entire thread to see how to do it. If successful, you will be on the 4.3 leak with no way to go back to MF3 or MDL. Again, you will need to read to see which way to do this.
Good luck.

Do you think it's possible that I could use Safestrap? Will flashing to 4.3 get my actual recovery menu back?

I think you need to go read about this stuff. Safestrap has a couple of threads with available information. If you successfully flash 4.3 (through ODIN) you will have the factory recovery back, but you will be on the 4.3 leak (no root yet) and you can't go back. Again, you need to read and learn about your options so please don't ask anything else until you check to see if it has already been asked and answered.

I viewed your profile and have only one question. Did you read at all about your model S4 before doing anything. I looked on this forum before buying my phone and after buying my phone it took me two weeks of reading before I even rooted it.i have had my fair share of uneducated questions in my short time with XDA .Please do yourself a favor and READ,

[Q] Rooting a Sprint S4 SPH-L720

Sorry for asking this question. I am guessing that it has been answered a number of times, but I can't seem to find anything recent or usable.
I have an S4 running 4.4.2
Baseband L720VPUFNG2
Kernel 3.4.0-2162929
Build KOT49H.L720VPUFNG2
I have been attempting to root it, but any of the information I am finding is pre-current updates. Is there a way to root this, or am I too late to the game? I have spent the last 3 days reading up, going to different forums, checking Youtube, etc. but I haven't located anything.
Any advice?
Brian
C.f. auto root. This will trip the Knox flag.
Thanks for the quick reply
I jumped on your advice and ran with it. Ran Root Checker and it looks like I have root access.
Thanks again for the advice.
Custom recovery
As an aside, with the cf auto not coming with a custom recovery, which would be the best to install here? Or should I just leave it stock?

TWRP or Philz Touch are the ones most liked. But really it's up to you and what you're most comfortable with.
Hey, which one did you use? I went here:
http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/
but didn't find one for KOT49H.L720VPUFNG2

I am pretty sure this is what I used.
I am trying to get you the information, but xda is being annoying as hell. I can't share a link or post an image or do anything to get you the name of it.
Google search this: Root L720VPUFNG2 Android 4.4.2 Stock Firmware On nasirtech
It should be your first return.
Hey, thanks
Actually, I had previously found that source, but the download file seemed tied to build KOT49H.L720VPUFNAE, so I was nervous about applying it. But sounds like it worked for you, so I'll give it a try

Thank you for this! Successfully rooted my S4 on Sprint!
Glad I could help. It feels nice to contribute.
I installed TWRP and ran nandroid to restore my apps and SMS from by backup.
TWRP comes with a nice stock looking wifi hotspot.
I just have to personalize all my settings and I am back on track.
Odin won't work

I have the same phone and Odin hangs on "Get PIT for mapping.. ". Can't get past this with any Odin attempt. Small print on phone says "WRITE PROTECTION: Enable"
Any Ideas ?
Actually, one more question: did this rooting method wipe your data? Instructions indicate a lot flashing going on. Thanks!

Let me think about what I did here.....
The autoroot itself did not. I installed it and it was all normal. My next steps could be ill advised and all over the place, but what I did was:
Installed JS backup and created a backup to the PC.
I like having that assurance just in case I break anything along the way.
Then I installed the TWRP recovery and let it run through everything. I have always been taught to wipe my dalvik, user, etc. cache when I am installing anything. So I did the wipe. After everything was installed fresh, I went back in and got nandroid backup and restore and was able to pull my JS backup data in, recreating my SMS log, my call log, etc. The only issue that I ran into, which isnt even a big issue, is that it cleared out my apps that I had installed. They mostly all errored out when trying to reinstall them via Nandroid.
I think that I could have probably used Titanium Backup once I got the initial autoroot done. I was just all over the place with it because I was burnt out from searching for answers for the past week or so.

What version of Odin are you using and did you get the correct root file? I know that each of these sets of instructions runs with different Odins and I found that depending on the installation attempt, it was important to use exactly what the instructions stated. So if someone is posting to use v1.85, that is the one to use. Please remember that I am not at all an expert on this. I just seem to be the first guy who recently got lucky enough to assemble the pieces and successfully push this thing onto a phone. I also had the PIT mapping problem, until I followed the link that posted the other day and followed the instructions exactly. Also, make sure that you are using your real Samsung cable, you are running it directly to your pc, and your usb port is good. Also, make sure that you have your Samsung drivers installed on the pc.
Root File
Where did you find the correct root file ?
I see now that I have KOT49H.L720VPUFNAE not KOT49H.L720VPUFNG2.
I have looked for a week. I have been looking for a week.

It is all in this thread. I cannot share links, so you will have to do the legwork on that one. If you google search what I entered previously, you should see your version in the list of headers.

P9 Lite booting lock

Hi all, i'm new to Android Phones, so i started a few days with this phone. But now i think i've done a big mistake, i tried to erase everything from the phone, in a hope to "restore" to the factory state. Instead, i think i've deleted everything from the phone, and now, it only says "Your device is booting now..." and it doesn't boot. It's unlocked and rooted, i've deleted it from the TWRP menu.
So, is there anything that i can do, to restore it back? The model i think it's the VNS-L31, i'm downloading a firmware from the L21, can it be replaced or something like that? Thankx in advance.
*Edit* I found stock rom for my phone here in the fórum, but it says i need to have stock recovery but i have the TWRP recovery. Is there any way that i can do it, with that recovery?
*Edit 2* In Erecovery, when i try to download it says "Getting package info failed"
First of all... Why don't you have a backup in TWRP? ALWAYS back up your stuff before doing ANYTHING in TWRP.
Second: there is an option for factory reset within the EMUI system itself. Absolutely no need to mess around in TWRP for something like that. Of course you can "factory reset" in TWRP but this can also wipe your system which then requires you to flash something.
To your problem:
Since I luckily was not forced to flash a stock firmware yet, some more information would be nice.
In which format does the firmware come (link to where you downloaded it)? TWRP can handle .zip files. So if it comes as a .zip file, you can try flashing it through TWRP (really depends on what you downloaded!)
If you only need stock recovery, try accessing TWRP with your phone plugged into a PC.
This way it normally fires up the stock eRecovery.
Hi, yeah, i should have done a backup, thank you for the advice. The firmware i used is this one www .stechguide.com/huawei-p9-lite-marshmallow-firmware-b100/ - i found it here, and a user used it to, not sure why, but he says that it worked.
I'm not sure if this is the right way to do it, because i'm new to this. The TWRP boot, but i can't get my phone to get recognized by the huawei software, not sure if it need to. Even with the drivers installed, it only connects if the phone is on the menu.

Hmm maybe best way is to send the user that made it work a PM and maybe he can provide you a guide on how to do it.
And maybe he or you can then provide a guide here on how to do it.
This device is rather new and the forum is building up so there is a lot of work to do and a lot of things have to be worked around.
Hope you can fix it, like I said, I cannot really help you properly since I never had the problem and therefore do not really understand what's happening on your device.
hi, thank you for the reply. In fact i have solved the problem few minutes ago, and was thinking on do a quick fix tutorial or something like that. Because it's really fast, just need to do the right way.
I'm really happy for the help i got in this forum, all the threads are really intersting. Going to try help others with the same problem that i had. Thank You

Always have a backup of your fresh system on TWRP. Then whatever happen just restore it whenever you think you messed up your device and you should be fine ALWAYS.
