[Q] AT&T S4 Questions - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hi. Coming from several Nexus devices. Sorry if dumb questions...
1) I have previously used Tasker and NFC Task Launcher to set auto-display-off to like 4 hours when in the car and connected to power. This doesn't seem to work on S4. Can it be done any other way?
2) Is that bad for the display?
3) If not possible and/or bad for the display, can I automatically make my PIN locks screen change to no lock screen based on NFC tag or settings profile?
4) I am using Nova Launcher rather than Touchwiz. Is it possible to root the phone and freeze that and a number of Samsung's junk using Titanium? I'd obviously want to be able to get fully back to stock if I needed warranty service..
Sorry to ask stupid questions... New phone, you know

1) I don't use either of those things, but I can't think of any reason it shouldn't work.
2) Yeah, if you leave it on 24/7 with a static image. But not anytime real soon.
3) That is a good question for the Tasker master-thread.
4) Yes you can. Your warranty will technically be voided, but as long as you Odin back to stock ROM before sending phone in for warranty, you shouldn't have any problems.

How to check phone for problems?

Hi All,
I've just purchased another Nexus S (I had two already) but this time second hand. This one however is doing some odd things. I've used Nexus S's since it was released so have a feeling for them. It does thing like:
- Rings with incoming calls but stays on lock screen.
- Has incoming calls but doesn't ring
- Freezing on the home screen & not getting touch input
- General oddities
First thing I'd guess would be to think it was dropped or damaged in some way but it's spotless, just the usual scratches or scuffs you'd expect on a 2nd hand phone. Box & everything look genuine, compared it with the other phones and it look all fine. I've done a reset of the software back to default (using in Phone reset) but still doing odd things.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to find out what is going on here, is there some sort of system self check I can run to check for internal damage? Fuller system reset I can do? Etc.
Any advice?
Phone details:
Android Version: 4.1.1
Baseband Ver: I9020XXKI1
Build num: JRO03E
Kernel Version: 3.0.31-g3b0c5d2
Cheers,
Mark
Was meant to post this in the Q&A thread I think, sorry about this. Could one of the moderators please move it for me.

I would suggest a full reset using the stock images from Google. Or root and flash a custom ROM.

GPS? Not sure what you mean, it's active some times, but don't use geo-location features on the phone often.
Root: No, stock updated OTA
Wifi: connected all the time to the same router as my other S's
Clean ESN: I assume so, didn't check, but I'm able to make and receive calls 85% of the time without any issues and very infrequent drops. It doesn't seem to be a network problem more the phone acting up in funny ways.
Cheers,
Mark.

I'd actually prefer to keep this one stock as its being used for work. I've rooted one of my S's, but this new one is being used as a main phone so have not rooted.
I've never flashed back a stock image, can this be done without root? If so, would you be kind enough to point me in the right direction of a walk-through so I can give it a go?
Cheers,
Mark.

[Workaround] Kitkat Frozen/Lag on Lockscreen/Homescreen

For anyone experiencing frozen/lag on Kitkat, especially after lockscreen, please check the memory and CPU consumption when the lag is happening (e.g. Watchdog Lite on Playstore).
Suspect :
[SystemUI memory leak]
In 4.4 Kitkat this SystemUI service is launched in the same package of S-View Cover services and Keyguard (Lockscreen) services.
This problem was known in 4.2.2 and fixed on 4.3 JB but seems resurrected on Kitkat.
Some components were not de-registered from memory after created and no longer being used especially by using lockscreen (and S-View cover) this object recreation seems to be overloading the memory and also eating CPU slice time.
Known Workaround
- Restart cellphone
- Restart SystemUI
- Refrain to use Lockscreen + SView cover together until further updates
Old Ref (applicable for 4.2.2 not Kitkat) :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...i-4-2-t2178962
I managed to isolate the problem, it is S-View cover used with Lockscreen that caused this. Dont know i this is closely related to TouchWiz or not. I'm currently still investigating.
[Workaround]
Use S-View cover without Lockscreen .. or use Lockscreen without S-View cover.
Thanks for letting us know this my good man.
I have been suffering from the same symptoms and have been investigating this, but since i do not have root, it seems to be very hard to track this.
please let us know if you find any answers to this nlatifolia.

For now, it is the Lockscreen that is suspected. Original Google Lockscreen is fine such on Nexus, on Samsung it has been modified to work together with S-View cover and to show Music Art.
Most symptoms are reproduceable if using S-View cover and Lockscreen at the same time though sometimes Lockscreen alone can cause this (apparently doing ****ty stuff in background on screen wake up).
To check ****ty stuff I use this : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zomut.watchdoglite
This happens to me also, i don't want to root the phone or downgrade it to 4.3 because it might trigger Knox and I already sent the phone back to them with an overheating problem, i don't want any more surprises from a very expensive phone that can't be covered by warranty.
I tried removing the password from the lockscreen and it's still having problems: i close the S view, push the power button and the screen stays off whilst the buttons light up. It's stupid cuz it's original Samsung software with original cover.....
Is there any way to downgrade without losing warranty or do you know if Samsung is thinking of pushing a fix?
I tried without success:
turning off all the sensors
turning off power saving
uninstalling a bunch of apps
I did not try factory reset yet, I'm afraid i'll kick the phone to pieces if i to a factory reset and nothing is changed, and i have to sent it to warranty again...

I have the S View from Spigen (slim armor) After trying everything, I am negotiating a refund/or a cover replacement. Don't know why a stupid thing like the phone cover is now a big deal with Samsung.
I sure do hope that Samsung would release a fix for the issue though. Let's see.
I have tried 3rd party apps for this too... And Sipgen advised me to install them! Imagine!
does anybody know if this problem occurs also with the original Samsung Chip from the original Sview Cover?
because otherwise it might be also a problem with the chip from Spigen.

Hi, I have an Original S Case bought from Orange Romania, with Samsung warranty and everything. The S-view function does not work with third party cases unless there is a specific software for it. Mine worked on 4.3 and on 4.4 with no added software, and i still have problems with the Screen not turning ON.
I did find a workaround however: turn of your lockscreen, any password, any swipe everything, and your screen will turn on with no delay. I had to remove my work email to get rig of the password....
By the way, does anyone know of an exchange email app that does not require the whole phone to be locked? it needs to be compatible with Office 365 like Cloud Magic is, but i also need my calendar displayed, and Cloud Magic does not do that.
no Sview works with the spigen armor view case @ Android 4.4.2
but I have the same problem like Ckhurana

Hi
I had the issues of screen not getting switched off on cover close and vice versa.
I got the replacement chip from spigen. Installed it 3 days back. Now the cover runs fine for 2 to 3 times only and after that it gives up.
The s view is more or less unusable now. It only gets launched if I either restart the phone or reinstall the cover.
Moreover I got the issue of screen getting switched on by itself when locked and thus a massive battery drain.
My phone is not rooted and I need to check if the s_view process is getting some issues. Any way I can do that?
And also if I can check if the chip is the issue or the low power magnet on the front flap. Let me know if anyone can help please!
Many thanks

Dear all,
the only way i have been able to get rid of this issue was by removing exchange mail/calendar and pin lockscreen. My note 3 has now low level of security ( swipe) but i can enjoy my samsung sview and docking station as i had issues with that one too.
Quite disappointed from a top device such as the NOTE 3

Touchdown works with Exchange and PIN enforcement. The policy will make the app enforce the PIN rather than the entire phone.
I do not know much about its compatability with Office 365, but it works well with exchange address book/calendar/email functions.

I use a pattern unlock and in the beginning it would occasionally freeze with my Original Samsung Charging S View cover after the Kitkat update. In my case, removing all security and reapplying the pattern unlock lockscreen worked for me and I no longer have freezes. I have not tried with PIN or password unlock lockscreens however. Your mileage may vary.

I'm currently using original Samsung chip (removed from original case and put into Spigen SAV) and the problem persists.
After a bit of more tests, I can safely conclude that the problem occured if we use S-View cover together with any type of stock Lockscreen.
[Current Workaround]
Use S-View cover without Lockscreen .. or use Lockscreen without S-View cover.
Note :
I'm currently trying to hack into the SystemUI code but no promise here as even if that suceeded I'm afraid we have to root to install the patch.
I'm currently using the original Sview Cover with no lock screen and it works without any troubles.
The phone has Android 4.4.2 and ist not rooted.

Btw, how much can be called leak?
Mine floating around 73Mb - 155Mb across several days (usually about 1 week)...
I use stock PIN lockscreen + xposed maximize widget + S-View cover from you
And I experience no lag/freeze after lockscreen.
What I noticed: S-Planner not displaying any dismis/snooze like Alarm on S-View, I have to open the cover to dismis it.
But when I use S5 S-Planner, it displayed, but I dont want S5 version, it got no handwriting feature...

Thanks, Touchdown/no Pin workaround worked for me!
Hi all
I was having similar issues to dumitrudan608 in particular. Huge hang on the lockscreen of up to a minute and normally above 10 seconds on Note 3. We recently acquired 2 of these to be used as company phones and BOTH were experiencing this.
I tried wiping the cache, factory reset, no S view cover, S view cover and turning on and off all sorts of settings but none of this worked. I managed to pinpoint this down to the native e-mail app which had been configured to use Exchange. Similar to dumitrudan608 we were forced to use a PIN (which shouldn't really be an issue, it should just work!).
I also rooted both devices in order to use BetterBatteryStats (can't use without root on KitKat) and to try to determine which wakelocks were causing the device to freeze up. There wasn't a massive battery drain though so this doesn't seem to be the issue. Plus, one of the phone's had nlpwakelock as the most common process however for the other one it was AlarmManager so there was no consistency.
I've now just removed the exchange account from the e-mail app, changed the lockscreen PIN to a pattern & wiped the cache. I've then installed Touchdown thanks to the advice from monomer888 & set it up with the same PIN as was previously on the lockscreen. There is absolutely no lag whatsoever, the phone is now flying. I've yet to try on the other device however I will when I get the chance (unfortunately I believe it's been dropped into Samsung...) and report back here.
A note on Touchdown, so far so good, it does all we want it to so far, so seems to be a viable replacement.
Also, the S view cover is now being used and so I can assume that, at least for us, this was not the cause of our issue. I have read that Samsung have acknowledged that there is an issue surrounding 3rd party covers however due to a chip in the device.
The only issue with this workaround is that you need a pattern to unlock the phone and then a PIN to unlock the app which is a bit tedious.
This is really basic stuff that Samsung should be getting right though. I'll be unwilling to test if the issue is fixed in a future update as having this working is more important to us.
Thanks guys, hope this helps you!
Hi again
I have done the same process on the other Note 3 and am happy to confirm that the issue has also been fixed by the method I used above, so this definitely seems to confirm the problem we were having.
Dissapointing .. we need to contact support
I have Note 3 SMN-900 (kitkat 4.4.2) with original sview cover
this is very disappointing !
thanks for the workaround , which is fine, but a fix is essential to be able to use google deivce policy
How to file a ticket to Samsung support regarding this ?

Have the same problem with my samsung note 3 after upgrade to android 4.42. I m using cloud magic as exchange mail for my company email. Just log ticket to samsung support malaysia but they claim this issue is related to google android 4.42 which have bug. So all the problem they throw it to google as this is not related to their device. How can samsung so not responsible for this issue.

NCK bypassing, unlocking, and/or rooting? Lollipop help.

Okay, so, yes, I know to use the Search function, but alas all information is either outdated or there is no concise answers / solutions to be found. Trust me, I have scoured.
Overview: Okay so Thursday I bought an SGH-i337, being the nerd that I am knowing that I use MetroPCS (can't beat unlimited 4G LTE for $60) I scoured the net and researched ALL models of the S4 and G3. Decided the screen size of the G3 too big coming from a 5C. Decided Sprint's version might work, but not on 4G. Verizon, would switch from LTE to 2G with no 3G support, so that would be a desperation act, haha.
So, my main options were T-Mobile, then AT&T, because MetroPCS and T-Mobile were one and the same. All the people that had T-Mobile based phone sellers were being a pain in the butt to deal with... so, I found an AT&T owner that was ready.
The tragic love story: So on once I used the MicroSIM card in the S4 to cut an old full-size SIM to scale a border around my Nano SIM and finally got it placed perfectly to read... I was happy... which faded quickly as it was locked, how could I be so dumb!
So, the previous owner is now awaiting an unlock code as I found EVERY method to use the UMTS Menu is impossible to get to "[6] Phone Control" option. Due to that silly Auto Updating AT&T bloatware and Kernel upgrade/Firmware.
Okay, I should wait, but... does anyone know a way to get to the Phone Control menu using a secret code?? I have noticed some of the many codes go straight to the Debug Screen or go straight to the other menu options... so could there be one for Phone Control?
Also, maybe is there a way to get the phone to output the NCK Key manually connecting it to a computer and using a prompt? I may have heard about such a thing on SureWest routers through TelNet, to get the administration password... not that I personally have done this. Just feel like if these websites are able to use an IMEI number to charge you for a code... it has to be stored on the phone somewhere right?
Rooting and Downgrading
Also, has anyone tried the Odin way of downgrading and rooting these phones, has personally worked for them? I have found the threads on here and it seems pretty interesting... when I look at previous versions of Droid they look to allow more functionality for more advanced users than this 5.0, so if that be the case I am interested in taking this back to stock and beginning removal of all AT&T programs.
Maybe I am sounding like an idiot, but I have been on a Jailbroken 5C for... probably 2 years now and even with that it seems limiting to the curious, nerdy, mess with things side of me.
Summary:
- Should I just wait the 2-5 days for the code? / Would downgrading firmwares negate the entered NCK code if used prior to downgrade?
- Are there any known ways to unlock this model fully upgraded?
- Should I use the Odin methods of downgrading to stock? / Do you prefer previous versions over 5.0?
- What problems should have you guys faced / should I consider prior to doing anything?
- Should I just try to find a T-Mobile model of the S4??
Phew, sorry, if you read all of that and hate me for it, haha. Please, be knowledgable and not tell me how dumb I am for being so antsy to be able to use this phone w/o WiFi! Haha, you guys try using a 5C forever and see the screen difference / abilities you've been missing out on for so long!
Thanks!
The method of downgrading to 4.4.2 (aka NB1) then rooting and then going to lollipop by keeping the root has worked for me. There is no direct way, to root lollipop atm.
First downgrade to stock rootable 4.4.2. You can do this from any base, and/or use it if you mess your phone up (bootloops, etc). Link here. Second post on that thread, step 1. Make sure you download the rootable one.
To root it use TowelRoot. Run it - Tap make it ra1n - After a succeseful root, install SuperSU.
The follow this post here to goto stock rooted lollipop 5.0.1 (aka OC4). I recommend downloading the deodexed version, so you can install xposed if you want in the future.
Thats it for rooting lollipop. And now that you have root you can get rid of that bloatware.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I personally, don't really fancy lollipop. High Ram usage.
Secondly, i bought this phone on eBay and it came unlocked, and even after flashing different firmwares, its still unlocked. I think if you unlock using that NCK code, the phone will stay unlocked forever.
Thirdly, the T-Mobile version has an unlocked bootloader, which is a big up in comparison to the i337. We are restriced to only using one costum recovery, that is SafeStrap. Others, don't work.
Thank you
I will probably have to go through that whole process. Got it unlocked thankfully, but am feeling as though based on specs and the little apps I have installed the phone should be a bit smoother in basic functionality especially Web browsing.
So yeah definitely already feeling your point in resource hog and though I disabled the bloatware, I don't think it helps being installed.
Also, figuring out after using the phone in my car that Galaxy has very quiet audio output via the 1/8" headphone jack. Seems that you can find volume controlled headphones easier than just straight cords! However, found this a known issue for all Galaxies and rooting it may be the easiest workaround.
Thanks for the organized list of information/insight! Now I will have some more stuff to geek out on... ?

I don't know, but cranking the volume to full on my phone using earphones, makes my ears hurt . The audio output on mine is great, nothing modified.

Yeah, I'd say it's probably fine with headphones, but through a car's auxiliary it is probably 25-30% quieter than my iPhone even at "full" volume.
Read that there are files to modify, but you have to be rooted.
What is this Mobile Data Toggle? Would it be really at all useful seeing as I have MetroPCS? * I assume that ridding AT&T is just a general tweak, which I do like getting rid of the carrier.

Mobile data toggle is used to enable Internet from your carrier/sim. Ridding the AT&T thing is sorta general because you need to have root.

SM-N910A, Android 6.0.1, Just need to work via WiFi

Daughter had her Note 4 replaced a few months ago, and it had just been sitting there. Earlier this week got a DJI Spark, and the flight controller requires an Android or iOS phone. Got tired of pulling the case off and on MY phone (S8+), so figured I could use hers as a WiFi-only, dedicated device.
My main concern is that I don't think we ever got the phone formally unlocked by AT&T. I've gotten around that so far just by pulling out the sim. It doesn't seem "happy" about it, but hasn't stopped me configuring the phone to do what I need so far - though it would be nice to be able to uninstall all the AT&T apps that are on there even after a full reset/wipe.
So wondering if there is:
A) Some way to unlock this old thing so I can rest easy it won't have an issue waking up one day
B) A more recent ROM and/or security updates (while it mainly will access the Drone/Receiver WiFi I presume I need to still connect to the home LAN occasionally for app updates)
C) Anything I could flash to make it less of a phone and more of a small tablet (since that's how I'll be using it)
Thanks in advance!
If you are saying the phone is locked to AT&T and you want it unlocked then see here:
https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/
Apparently no one has been able to root your device before because they cannot unlock the bootloader:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...ty-att-note-4-root-knox-list-pledges-t2946770
My recommendation is to do a factory reset and use something like Package Disabler Pro app to freeze unneeded applications.

My recommendation is to do a factory reset and use something like Package Disabler Pro app to freeze unneeded applications.

Ah... well that's too bad. I like that the phone has a replaceable battery, which makes it almost worth keeping as long as possible for that. Will try your suggestion on the other. Thanks anyway!

Screen turns on when plugging in for charge / High Volume warning Mods?

Hello!
I've been out of the rooting / custom rom game for awhile (last used with my galaxy s5) and I had a couple of questions for the community. I've been looking at rooting my phone and installing a custom rom basically only for these two things that keep bothering me.
1. Phone turns on screen when placed on charger. I won't explain why this annoys me and I've read all the posts where people are like "just set your time out to 30 seconds". I have a long time out because I am a musician and I use the phone at times for reading music. My nightly routin consists of placing my phone on my wireless charger and then pressing the power button to turn the screen off. I'd just like the phone to start charging without turning the screen back on. Minor inconvience I know, but we live in 2019 and I should be able to customize my phone the way I want, right?
2. When I'm listening to music over bluetooth, I try to increase the volume and get the "listening at high volumes..." notification. I would like to disable this permantely. I know that it goes away after hitting okay once, but it comes back after restarting. This is esspecially troubling while in the car and I have to look down at the phone and press the button making it more of a risk than it "helping me with loud volumes".
I remember using roms years ago that addressed these two specific problems and I loved them for that. So my question is, are there any fancy rooted mods I can do to my phone to disable these things, or is there a ROM that specifically addresses these issues I have? Are there files I can delete, or code I can modify? Ideally I can just disable these two things and stay stock, but I'm down for anything at this point.
Running a Unlocked Galaxy S8 SM-G950U1 with Android version 8.0.0.

You need a modified Frame Jar so you can be able to have the screen stay off when you put in the charger if you was willing to install xposed I can lead you to a Module that resolves your first issue... For your second issue the same module resolves that issue also

I'd be way into that! Please lead the way! So if I'm understanding correctly, I will need to root, flash a recovery such as TWRP, install Xposed frameworks as shown here for Oreo (my current OS), install the APK, and install the modules you point me to? Will I need to flash the stock OS again after installing the recovery? Please let me know if the link I added is out of date and if there's a newer thread. Also I am curious as to what the preferred/most up to date rooting method is for an unlocked Galaxy S8 if someone wouldn't mind sharing a link? It seems as there are a few more steps than what I was used to years ago, but I'm definitely down to dig in. Thank you for your help!

I'm now realizing I may be in some trouble as I've been doing some more digging. Am I correct that because I have an SM-G950U1 Snapdragon US "Unlocked" phone, that I have a locked bootloader and therefore cannot root?
The only thing that looks hopeful I've been seeing is with this guide, but the rom is for Nougat: here
I'd prefer to stay "stock" Oreo if possible.
Can I even install TWRP or Xposed without root on Oreo?
Thanks for your help.
Can anyone help with this? Thanks!
