[Q] Apple fan boy running Cyan on first Android s4 with questions. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So I got an iPhone back in the day the day after they carrier unlocked it and hardware unlocked it aka serious nerd. I love jb'ed iphones and knew everything about them. I decided to switch to Android as I hear more and more good stories and developments.
I have a few questions:
1. Why does it say "AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Android Development" vs "AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Original Android Development"
The forum topics look differnt. I would guess original was first buyers and the other would be the future buyers?
2. Kernels vs Roms - Kernels is the OS and roms is the software/visual/tools.. right? So I installed TWRP and installed Cyan. It looks like it was a kernel + rom all included?
3. Why did I have to download a sound sync app to apply vibrate to apps when I put my phone on silent? Seems weird to me. I put my phone on silent and I expect everything to be silent.
4. I'm confused with Nandroid VS TWRP / Clockwork.
5. I see battery extenders but not batter cases? Also, do you think someone will make a wireless battery case?

1) Android ORIGINAL is stock Google like aokp and cm, they are the true stock bare bones without bloatware from att and samsung, its like iOS to apple.
Just Android Development is software like Touchwiz and Sense, manufacture and carrier version of Android, just mainly bloated and personalized

Roms are the OS and everything visual, kernels are what run everything and tell the hardware what to do in the OS

Just turn off all sounds in settings and it should do the trick
Nandroid is a Recovery Image File, like a backup. You have stock recovery, and twrp and cwm, stock is what you get when the phone comes to you from carrier, you must install custom recovery to flash ROMs and kernels and create and restore backups. Twrp and cwm do the same thing, so its just user preference

They have Qi patches for the battery covers to enable wireless charging

There are several guides out there to root Nexus S. General section (sticky threads).
Also, you can head up to Nexus S hacks. They have a great tutorial webpage with videos about rooting your phone.

BTW, here are all OTA and ROM packages for i9020A:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445621
This is only for i9020A. But oldblu910 has added a reference for all devices. Make sure you use the proper guide since it can get pretty ugly if you flash another one on your device.
well heres the link for a one click,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250583
Also the dev sections are split for the cdma (Nexus s 4g) and the GSM models (Nexus S)
So just stick to looking around in the nexus s dev forum for correct roms and radios for your phone good luck, and its super easy. THe ony thing is to ge the proper drivers for your phone, I have used pdanet to locate and install drivers when rooting. Good Luck

[Q] Rooting ATT S4 on Linux?

I'm relatively new to all this, but have been trying hard to read as much as possible about the process. I have a new ATT Galaxy S4 (regular, not Active or Zoom) that I want to root and install CyanogenMod on. The phone is an SGH-1337, running Android 4.2.2, and the baseband version is 1337UCUAMF3. I'm running Debian, and occasionally have access to an OS X machine but never easily to Windows.
I have tried to follow all of the main pinned advice threads here. But according to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42320414&postcount=2 it seems like I simply can't root my phone. There are two options to root; the first one (despite the fact that this is the pinned post for this method) has been deleted, and the second one only works on Windows.
Am I missing something, or do I have to wait, or try to get on a Windows machine, or something?
Thanks.
You really need to use a Windows machine to format the sd card correctly or it won't work.
Also once you get rooted, just know you cannot install cyanogen on the S4. We have no custom recovery only safesteap

[Q] LG G2 Rom Questions

I am going to be getting a LG G2 Verizon - VS980 and I am fimliar with rooting but not with custom roms. I have a Nexus 10 so I never felt the need to fiddle with ROMs. I wanna install CyanogenMod Release candidate. I heard freegee and root are needed to install something that is needed for custom roms but I just don't quite have a full grasp on it. I am new at ROMs but not at rooting. Could someone point me in the right direction? Also I have a few questions.
Is the VS980 correct LG G2 for Verizon to get downloads from the CyanogenMod site?
Do you recommend any other roms besides CM? I like the Nexus line because it is simply stock android but I do like the feature over overclocking that CM offers I think with its 2Ghz it would be uneeded.
If your already on Verizon this about the best android device you can get right now I personally prefer the nexus 5 but I'm on Verizon so no nexus devices for us except the galaxy nexus which i maymake my my backup device oh and if you plan on getting the lg g2 you might wanna get one soon before you get an lg g2 with firmware that patches Loki

I'm on liquidsmooth I find it very stable occasionally freezes that's with all custom ROMs especially kitkat ROMs sometimes you have to hard reset which stinks but it will get more stable

You don't need root to flash custom roms you just need to unlock your bootloader
you can find that guide here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224020
Personally I'd just root it since your new rom will be rooted anyway, it just makes life easier, and there are easier methods of unlocking the bootloader using root apps.
To answer your other questions I don't believe the cyanogenmod installer works on your device but it wouldn't hurt to give a shot. If your looking for a stock android feel cyanogen's the way to go I'd highly recommend it over any stock rom but try things for yourself and see what you like best.

I am getting a LG G2 this Sunday or Saturday. Do you think that it will be to late? How do I tell if I have a version that has loki patched on it?
I would not try this on the g2 maybe it works maybe it doesent

It shouldn't be to late were not expecting an ota till sometime in march you might be cutting it close depends when but as soon as you root install custom recovery or disable ota because lg will push updates to your device even if you say no and when your rooted it creates a mighty soft brick

You'll be good to go, probably not going to see an ota until the kk release which could be months away (Yay Verizon ). I just got mine today (Verizon) rooted using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48709232&postcount=869
And recovery using freegee. Effortless, and easy. Make sure you backup your efs in the freegee app and there is a better efs backup in the general section that you should do to.
And to reference another poster here, our bootloader is 100% locked. Root is required in order to apply the loki patch to flash a custom recovery. Loki allows a custom recovery to operate on the stock locked bootloader... You really won't know the difference from it being locked or unlocked.

I just looked closer this unlock method is for the optimus 4g different hardware everything is different lg went the more locked down root with the g2

Do you mind going into a little more detail about the Loki patch? My buddy is pretty into this stuff (I'm not, but I have a Nexus 7 and prefer the stock version instead of LGs), and said he'd be able to help me...well, he has a GS4, and it took him a while to figure out something was wrong with the boot loader (communicating long distance)...now were kinda stuck, and don't know what to do. I'm in almost the exact same situation as OP...VZW G2 that I'd like to put CM on.
Also...I think I may have messed up big time and rooted my phone before making any recovery files...the poster above talking about the upcoming OTA bricking phones....am I just sitting on a ticking time bomb?
Garsh that xda forums noob video is making me feel awfully stupid right now

I do have a recovery...have tried with Clockwork Mod and TWRP, but basically what happens is if I try to do a manual boot in to recovery mode using the keys on the back, it just actually goes through with the factory reset of the phone. If I try to do it through an app like CWM or TWRP, I get the LG splash screen, and then the android logo with its chest open and the red exclamation point over it. If I let it sit and do nothing on that graphic, eventually the phone just resets. There is nothing else on that screen but that graphic.

Even using Flashify, which claims to bypass this whole Lokis patch (still dont really understand what it is) didnt work...

Try to do through an app? You mean rom manager or twrp manager? If so it sounds like you still have the stock recovery, which would render those apps useless. Use the freegee app instead of flashify, it automatically downloads the correct recovery/loki patch and applies it.
Loki is simply a patch that tells the bootloader upon initial boot that it's OK to continue...Your bootloader is still locked, but the phone doesn't recognize that. If loki wasn't there, you'd just brick just like all the poor Verizon samsung users since the last update...

THANK YOU!!!
I know it may be common knowledge to some, but to a complete newbie, this was the one bit of information I was missing that made a very frustrating process very simple. Many thanks to you my friend, if I could hit more than just a button to express it I would :highfive:

Looking for advice from existing SAC23 Note 5 Port users

I just got my Note 4 and it's running stock N910PVPS4COK1. I'm unfamiliar with the ins and outs with this phone, coming from the S4 (Rooted, TRWP 2.8.7.0, BlissPop v4.03). I think I want to end up running the SAC23 Note 5 port with root access.
I want to do this right the first time, so I'm looking to get some advice from veterans in this area and steer clear of any problems / issues that I might encounter.
1. Is running the Note 5 port going to effect the ability to use Android Pay and/or Samsung Pay on this device if I head down this path?
2. Do I need to and should I, root and install TWRP first in order to flash the SAC23 Note 5 port? Or do I flash the port directly from Odin onto stock?
3. What is the best way to approach and what are the best versions / revisions I should be using? (Odin version, TWRP version, SuperSU version, SAC23 Note 5 port version)
4. In the SAC23 Note 5 Port thread there is mention of PMing for the latest version. Is v2.1 the latest or do I need to PM to get a later version?
Any advice through your direct experience with this phone and port would be greatly appreciated.
Search these forums. ALL these questions have been asked AND answered. I just don't think a complete "hold your hand" is the right approach. Read, read and read some more and than make your choice. There is an entire forum dedicated to rooting your device. Just search and look around. Good luck!

I have read. How else would I know the things I am asking about? The threads for these subjects were started at a time when a different Baseband was being used and things change from where you start from. I'm looking for succinct answers from people who would like to share their experience in this area. No offense, but basically you've added nothing other than a "Good Luck". So thanks for that, and same to you.

If u know anything about android you need a root your device for any custom rom, as far as the new version yes you need to ask for an invite to the hangout for the latest version which is not 2.1, i believe android pay does not allow a rooted device to use it so its tricky, Twrp in my experience is the best recovery

The N5 port automatically brings SU baked in, you need to be rooted so root first and odin a rooted stock base suck as OK1 which is latest make sure to update prl and profile before flashing the port n5

Thank you very much. Thats exactly what I wanted to know. I will odin Freeza stock OK1 kernel with root support for a systemless root and update the profile & PRL before flashing the Note 5 port.
I was not aware that a port & a custom ROM were the same, but it makes perfect sense.
Your excellent point about the PRL update sparks another question. I'm on Ring+ and had to tweak my APNs to get 3G and LTE to work on CM based ROMs for my S4.
Are there APN issues with the Note 5 port like are found with the CM based ROMs?

Looking for the most recent stock rom to flash using TWRP so i can keep root.

so I'm running RR Unofficial and it's nice to use but the phone just can't keep up with it all performance wise. I was thinking of going back to stock moto x rom but I want to keep root so to do this I was thinking I would just flash a rom using TWRP containing the stock rom from moto. But i'm having a hard time finding a download for it. Anyone able to link me to one?? By the way my moto x is my backup phone from my Pixel, it's why i'm using it over my Pixel right now since I need to wait for my replacement device ever since google screwed up with their latest patch.
You can't keep root.
You have to flash boot(kernel). @silvernirvash
