[Q] Nook ST unrootable, please help! - Nook Touch General

Hi,
I bought a Nook ST running 1.1.0 specifically in order to root it. I've used multiple versions of touchnooter and it always brings up either a rooted forever screen or a touchnooter screen. It then flashes black and proceeds to boot normally, with no trace of any changes whatsoever. Having watched several videos, I know it should then bring up options to boot normally or to the rooted version, but no such thing happens. I've literally tried in excess of 30 times, including factory resetting multiple times, but still no luck. I've been through the information at the links below in detail and had an extensive correspondence with Alan Henry from Lifehacker, and he ended up saying it was weird and beyond his ability to deal with, since he'd never seen anything like it before.
Please help!!!

Create an SD card with NookManager on, make a backup (using NookManager) to the SD card, upgrade to 1.2.1, root using NookManager.
Worked for me.

NookManager zeroes unused space before performing the backup, and gzip compresses it, so its backups are rather less unless your Nook is full of B&N ebooks and side-loaded ebooks. My (virtually-clean) backups were about 280MB if I remember correctly.

Still unrootable!!

Upgraded the firmware to 1.2.1. Got NookManager here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351
It booted up a screen that said Nook Manager and after maybe 10-15 seconds went white. The post says, "You should see the NookManager boot screen followed within 15 seconds by the welcome screen." Waited a very long time, it just stayed white. Rebooted it and it just brought up the normal Nook boot... just like before! Tried a second time, same results. I don't feel like ding this 30 times like I did with the previous versions, the point is made. It simply refuses to root!!!

Weird. All I can suggest is to try another SD card, particularly if you're using a Class 10/UHS-I card.

Still no good...

Fairly new, help booting from sd card

Hey guys just got a nook color last night been doing some research but i made a card that I believe should have been able to boot from sd upon start up. I have not been able to get it to do this. I am not sure what needs to be done im running stock 1.2 and not feeling rooting yet just booting cm7 from the SD but if i need to root I can. Please advise i have looked around and searched and not found adequate information? Thanks

If you follow the instructions in the forum you should have no problems. My suggestion is to try verygreens SD size agnostic setup. Follow the instructions exactly and you should have no problems.

k that's the one i followed but do i have the card in the nook when i write the image to it? because it says after writing the image to it to place it in the computer... also do i need to hit anything specific to boot up from SD when i turn the nook on? because those are the instructions that i followed and i have had no luck
edit: also if i am writing the disc onto the SDcard while in the nook how would i go about doing so?

I was also confused by this...
I'm having the exact same problem, and am having no luck on here trying to read and find the answer.
I just got my Nook Saturday night from Best Buy, and updated it to stock 1.2. It's not rooted. I haven't done anything to it yet. Spent most of the day yesterday just trying to get the loader image to burn to the sd card, kept refusing to do it. I am absolutely NOT a geek, and hubby (who is) finally figured out what I did wrong when he got home last night. Apparently the program I used to unpack it, had it bloated to 4 GB, instead of about 130 mb.
Well, he tried following verygreen's instructions to put CM7 on the card (8 GB class 4) so we could use that in the Nook. Can't get the Nook to boot with the card, it just keeps booting stock. Once booted, I can see the card in it, but it is not booting from it. Also, there is no Touch the future of reading screen on this nook, there is a screen that says Read Forever, if that matters. I'd sure appreciate any insight into why it might not be recognizing that it should be booting from the card.
I was really excited to get this, it's the only decent tablet I can afford, but I'm a bit frustrated. And hubby doesn't really have the mental energy to deal with this sort of thing during the week when he comes home from work. And I really wanted to learn how to do this myself, so I can do what's needed when he isn't here...
Thanks ahead of time if you read all that and can/want to help me!!
It seems likely that the card didn't get made into a bootdisk correctly.
1) Are you using windows, mac, or linux?
2) How was the μsd card connected to your computer when making it into the boot disk?
3) When you connect the card back to the laptop in the same way, what happens? What is the card labeled?
Oh, and it says "Read Forever" in 1.2. "Touch the future of reading" is from 1.1, and also CM7.

Thank you for responding! I have actually fixed it finally. Seems the Microcenter card I was using must not have liked all this. So I had another card laying around, a 4 GB, no idea what brand, and tried it all again. This time it worked! So happy now, got it all going so I can play with it now!

Brand new NC w/ 1.2 no sd boot

***Edit as of 9:09 PM EST... We have confirmed that another "46" has rooted... Looks like my bud just has a partially broken NC, so move along....
Older info, left for posterity, incase the sky really is falling...
Please read carefully, I have tried everything. If you bought your NC within the past 3-4 weeks, please go to the last post on this thread, and create a new one with your serial number, leaving the last 4 as xxxx. We are trying to gather serial info, as I apparently have a "46", and no one else that we know of so far has anything newer than a "45"...
Ok, I've rooted about 20 of these so far. I know how to make a CWM 3.0.1.0 bootable microsd like the back of my hand. A Co-worked handed me his freshly bought NC. I noticed it was running 1.2. I turned it off. I popped the SD card in that I used to root one just this past weekend. I powered it back on, and it booted directly from emmc. I then went and made a brand new CWM SD card, using a different SD. Same behavior. Rebooted 8x, hoping that recovery would kick in. It did, but just brought me back to 1.2 again. Pondered, what would the XDA Gods do? ADB... Right, doesn't connect. Could be something on my machine, but I think it's due to USB debugging disabled, but I cant re-enable it from the sotck BN1.2 interface...
Has the end come? I dont want to yell that the sky is falling... I'll be here until 4p, and I'm willing to try anything other than breaking it open or returning it and hoping for an older 1.1x model.
Oh, and I know that the slot works, as after the boot, if I eject the sd and mount it on the pc, I see the lost.dir and other folders that android has created. (also, it can be seen on windows when I plug in the usb cable...)

No, Step 1 of the manualnooter is booting from CWM sd. When I make the sd, and pop it in, it doesnt boot from it, it goes directly to emmc.
My bad.
So you are using 3.0.2.8 as recommended and you have tried the card you burned in another NC that you know boots from the SD?
Yep, well 3.0.1.0, but yes. I 've tried 2 cards, 1 of them I just used this past weekend to successfully root a stock 1.1.
Hrm.
I know it sounds dumb since you say that at least one of these cards worked just a few days ago, but I would create an upgraded 3.0.2.8 and try it again.
Winimage is writing now... I'll edit this post when its done, and I've updated to 3028
*edit* Yep, still no sd boot.
Interesting... Sucky, but interesting. Could it be a bum unit?
This makes me wonder things... Like why we use uSDs when B&N built in an update mechanism that only requires the update files to be placed in the USB-visible directory on the EMMC.
Sad turn of events if true. OTOH, it makes our NC's more valuable on the used market.
Dumb question, but I presume he had already registered the device? Also, maybe try a different card, it's possible that there may be something on that actual card that may cause a problem. As a last resort, return it to the store and ask for another? dunno Maybe see if the model number on the back is different? or see what serial number range it came from?
Registered status has nothing to do with the ability to boot from SD. The ability to boot from SD is set in the firmware, and apparently BN has changed it in the most recent version. I've tried 2 cards that I have used before. No dice.

201146003592xxxx
Did you see if you could even read the SD from stock 1.2? Sure, android created some folders, but maybe the slot was not working well. My USB micro SD reader sometimes gives me errors when trying to copy files over. It will copy a fe MB, then it quits and the card disappears. I have to eject and reinsert the device a few times to get things working.

[Q] Another Older Noob. Just, not as old.

Nook Color 1.2.0 Brand spanking new. I have no intentions of purchasing anything from Barnes & Noble. I basically want to transform this little reader into a mini tablet, for games, reading, web browsing via wifi hotspot, email & movies. And maybe a few other do dads. I'm not a techie and not very familiar with much of the technical language. I don't know it this really matters, but I do not have wifi at home. It would only be used some place where is was offered for free. I have read pages and pages from all sorts of forums, but I am just not getting it. I think I would like to change the ROM so that it runs without the aid of anything on a secure digital card. I'd like to hang on to the card for future storage. I think, what I want can be done, but dont understand the full procedure of doing it.
And if I see something that says the file comes with a built in root, into the rom, does that mean the Nook Color doesn't need to be rooted ? Or, is the beginning of any and all procedures here begin with a rooted Nook Color ?
I hope someone can help, because all this information is beginning to run together and confusing me to no end. I'm looking for some sort of "beginning to end" step text. Starting with the NC right out of the box.
Read through the steps in the link in my sig. It's my attempt at making the process of getting full Andriod on the Nook Color as straightforward as possible. I gotta tell ya though, with no wifi you're gonna miss out on half the fun. For instance, when people have the "Sent from..." line they are using an app to post directly from their device.

Just follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12797652
Get the ROM here:
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=encore
Select the 7.2 RC3 version. And after you have it installed and running, you can change a setting so it does not need an SD. (Go to settings/cyanogenmod settings/application settings and select 'use internal storage'.)
I'm not sure whether you will want the google applications (gapps) or not. If you have no wifi, you may not need it. But without wifi and the Market that comes with the gapps, you will not have many apps to play with. If you want gapps, get them at goo.im/gapps. Select the newest gb version.

Rustifier,
The gentlemen on this forum can pretty much give you any info you need. They have given me a substantial amount of help. I too have been looking to find a book or two on Android, but as I found out this afternoon, there doesn't appear to be a whole lot of information available on Android at the library, at least in Springfield, MO. anyway.Going to have a look at Barnes and Noble store later this evening).
So, if I am reading this right, I do not hove to root the nook first, before applying these mods. Correct ?

At the risk of hijacking this thread, the links will give you a lot of information on how to use Android as an ereader, whether on a Nook or any other device:

On with the guide:
Download 1gb CWM 3.2.0.1 sdcard image from here. MD5 of .zip: 1319739d33642ed860e8044c3d55aa56. (I made this based on work in this thread. credit: to cmstlist and DizzyDen, and kevank for hosting). You really only need the 1gb image for this guide, no matter what the size of your card is. A smaller image will burn faster, and when you're done with the guide you can reformat the card anyway.
Extract the clockworkmod .img (if you can't open the file use 7zip)and burn to sdcard using win32diskimager (free). These apps will need to be "run as administrator." If you're not sure how to do this see step 3 here. ***Some internal laptop/desktop readers will not work to do this, you may need an external USB reader if you run into problems.***

These apps will need to be "run as administrator." If you're not sure how to do this see step 3 here. ((went there))
View the contents of the SD card on your computer. You should see contents similar to those in the imge to the right. ((yep, it's all there))
If you don't, you did something wrong... please review the prerequisites and the steps and try again.
Remove the microSD card from your computer. ((OK))
Run the AutoNooter on your Nook Color using the uSD card you just burned.
((Huh ?)) I just burned 1gb CWM 3.2.0.1 - I didn't read anything about AutoNooter in this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=12797652
Shut the device down completely. Make sure the USB cable is unplugged hold the power button down until prompted and choose power off.
Insert the microSD card into the NOOKcolor. ((did that))
Plug the USB cable from your NOOKcolor into your computer. ((did that))
The NOOKcolor will boot the microSD although the screen will remain off.
((it came on immediately, but it's not doing anything))))
EssaysExperts.Com is the company which first and main priority was, is and will be customers satisfaction with the [essays online]. If you still have no idea where to buy your writing tasks, this company is the best option for you.
If you're using the Nook cable, the charge LED may blink. That would be ok, it is not important.

No. The problem you are having is that the Nook is very particular about how the card is formatted before it will boot from it. Your PC can see the card and read the files, but unless it is just right, the Nook will not boot from it. So you need to experiment with burning software (win32diskimager or winimage) and with different card readers (external usb or internal pc readers). If you use winimage, write to the disk with the menu choice 'Restore Virtual Disk Image to physical drive' instead of 'write disk'. I know it is a pain, but this is what you must do if it is not booting. Experiment.
You can also try the one I have attached to my tips thread in my signature. I have an updated CWM (5.5.0.4) on my version. (Under item A9).

Sounds like you did it right for an installation to SD. But I thought you were trying to install to internal memory. That's what your last post was all about.
When you say it does not power up with the SD in, do you mean it starts to power up, but stops at a blank screen, or it just does not do anything?
Also take the card out and put it in your PC and look to see if the CM7 and gapps zips are gone. If they are gone that means they installed. If they are still there, it means the install failed.
MLO uRecImg uRecRam u-boot uImage uRamdisk are what is left on the sd card.

How are you trying to power it up? You should just hold the power button for a few seconds until a tiny flash happens and let go. If you hold it too long, it turns itself off.
I tried pressing the power button until i saw anything on the screen. .
Press and release. Press and hold a few seconds and release. Press and hold a long while. Still nothing. Just a black screen.

[Q] Is there a way to recover from a /boot format?

Nook Color, 8Gb uSD card, was running CM7 and intended to load CM10.
I got in a hurry / wasn't watching closely enough and mistakenly formatted /boot using CWM. Now I've got a black, blank screen. No sign of life at all. No way to get into Recovery mode to flash.
Tried so far: have researched question, followed several different threads. (Many dead links). Reloading available uSD bootable images on uSD doen't to work.
Is there another solution or do I go buy another (used) Nook Color.

When you format /boot and do not immediately flash a new ROM before rebooting, there is nothing in /boot and it will not even turn on. The solution is to use a bootable SD in the slot and then it will turn on and boot to the card. Like the previous user said, go to my tips thread and make one of my bootable CWM SDs. It has been modified to help in these situations.

Thanks... but.... still looking for a new solution
Thank you both for responding, I appreciate the effort.
As I said in the original post, I've consulted the threads mentioned (and several more, including RileyGrant's and thecubed's.) I tried formatting a bootable CWM uSD card using several different files. Actually, two uSD cards, one 4Gb and one 8Gb, using WinImage to create the image. I tried to extract the image file from the 1.4.3 update, and too many other "fixes" already mentioned in the forum to list. The results are the same, nil; just a black screen with no indication of life.
As a side note, MANY of the threads on the forum are either dead or files have been deleted. An example is the legacyschool site.
Again, I appreciate the suggestions and I'll keep looking.

Are you saying you never successfully burned my CWM card? That is going to be your only way out is to do that. As I said, mine has been modified to fix your problem.
Keep trying to burn it. Don't use winimage. Use win32diskimager. And don't use your internal card reader, use an external USB type. And run the software in administrator mode in windows.
Are you able to fully charge the Nook?
Edit: download the BN image zip file. Place on blank sd card. Insert in nook. Press volume + and power buttons at same time.
Still No-Go
leapinlar,
Thanks for your response.
I suppose I haven't been very clear... I did successfully burn the bootable CWM 5.5.04 image to both a 4Gb and 8Gb cards, in addition to the many other attempts using an exhaustive combination of different image files, different uSD cards, different USB drive card readers, etc. As the title suggests... no-go. Does not boot. Black screen. Nil. Kuput. That pooch is screwed.
I appreciate your help, but realize it is time to move on.

Well, one more suggestion. Charge the battery. It may have run down while all this was going on. Then try my card again.

Thanks for the suggestion #2. Nothing worked. Nook Color now history. Moving on.

[Q] SD Somehow transferred cyanogenmod to Nook Color

I've tried to do a search for this but can't find it. I'm such a complete novice I may have run across it and not even known I did. I tried to make a bootable SD to be able to use the google app store. I've seen so many instructions now I don't even know where the first one I used is. I think I used CM7 (my Nook Color is version 1.4.1...don't know if that matters). So far, nothing I've done has added the shopping cart but first things first.
Evidently I must have really screwed things up because the cyanogenmod is now on my nook instead of the SD card (which explains why I had so many problems when I tried to redo it). The first thread I found doing a google search was this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720&highlight=restore+to+stock.
After reading through it on the last page someone posted that it was a very old thread and to go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25354258#post25354258 and go down to 15A. But, having the technical skills of a pencil eraser, I can't even figure out which software to download, let alone how to accomplish the restoration. I actually managed to jailbreak my iphone but that was just a matter of downloading software and running it. This doesn't appear to be as simple.
I did manage to find all the files required by the first thread to do the restore, but then I got to this: Select "Restore virtual hard disk image" from the "Disk" menu. My winimage doesn't say that. I am using a new SD card so perhaps that's why. It's at that point that I read all the way through the thread to discover that method? or the firmware? was obsolete.
All I really want is to know which file(s) to download and, if possible, a link to instructions a 5 year old could follow. If I knew a 6th grader I'd just ask them because I'm pretty sure this is hard wired into their DNA. I'm 53 so that's probably half my problem. I can usually figure these things out but this has me completely stumped.
Thanks so much for your time.
You probably used ROM Manager and told it to install CWM and update to a new ROM. The problem is, ROM Manager only works on internal memory installations, not SD installations, so it installed CM to internal memory.
Don't use that old thread to flash stock back on to internal memory, even if you did find the files.
And age is not an excuse for not learning, I'm 68.
Go to my thread referenced above and download the stock 1.4.3 zip file from A15. It is linked in the text of A15.
Make a bootable CWM SD. Use that to flash the stock ROM. Download the file CWM-6.0.1.2-bootable_SD.zip and extract it somewhere on your PC. You should end up with approximately a 300MB .img file. Burn that image to your SD using Win32diskimager per the directions quoted here:
To use Win32DiskImager, find it on the web (here, it's free) and install it on your Windows PC. Open it (be sure to run it as administrator) and select the drive (device) that has your card reader with your SD inserted. Then in the image file box put the location where you have the extracted img file. Then when everything is set right, click on the write button. A warning will pop up asking if you want to proceed. When you have verified that you are going to write to the correct device, click on Yes. (One user overwrote their external USB hard drive by not verifying first). If you get an error message about access denied, it means you are looking at the drive with Windows Explorer. Close Windows Explorer and try again. In fact, it is a good idea to close all unnecessary windows when burning, even your browser.

Once the SD is burned, temporarily remove the SD from the PC and then reinsert in your PC. Then copy the Stock zip you downloaded earlier to the SD. Insert the SD into your Nook and boot. Once CWM appears, use the volume up/down keys to move the cursor and highlight "Install zip from SD". Then use the n key to activate it. Select the zip you copied to the SD. Go ahead and flash it.
When it is complete, take the SD out and boot. It should boot to stock.

Make a bootable CWM SD. Use that to flash the stock ROM. Download the file CWM-5.5.0.4-bootable_SD.zip and extract it somewhere on your PC. You should end up with approximately a 200MB .img file. Burn that image to your SD using Win32diskimager per the directions quoted here:

Thank you, I'll try again! It's not that I don't want to learn. I'm asking because I trying to learn. I think I've probably confused myself by reading too much on too many websites and it takes me a little while to figure out technical things. I do appreciate the help. I probably just need to take some deep breaths and clear my brain so I can start over. I just want to make sure I don't really mess it up to the point it's completely unrepairable.

Notice I changed which CWM you should download. Use 6.0.1.2, it works better for stock.

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! It works perfectly!
Sorry to be a bother, I don't know whether this is related. Everything loaded perfectly and it looks just as it did when I first turned it on but now every time I try to use the keyboard, it pops up for probably less than a second and then goes back down. I've tried to "catch" it to see if I could get a letter/digit each time to try and put in but it just goes up and down, up and down. I tried doing the set up with the boot disk in because I know nook reads the sd card first but that didn't help.
However, the version I originally had on the nook color was 1.4.1. Would it make a difference if I used the 1.4.3 instead?
Thanks

Did you follow the instructions in the thread where you were supposed to flash a format zip? I forgot to add that in the above instructions. It is not to late to do it. Boot to CWM and flash the format zip and boot back to stock and re-register again. That may be the cause of the keyboard problem.
And being 1.4.3 should make no difference.

Yes. Installed that as well. However, I did notice when I put the sd card in my computer a few times windows said "disk might be corrupt do you want to continue?" So that might be the problem. I'll go into town tomorrow and get a new one to see if that makes a difference.
Well, I got a new SD card and it's still doing the same thing, the keyboard just goes up and down, up and down so I don't know what to do now.
Cindie
fix it?
Did you ever get it fixed? I did (probably) the exact same thing as you did (installed flashable ROM in eMMC), and it took me hours to get it straightened out
Although I can't say for sure... since I wasn't really taking notes with what I was trying... I think what eventually got me going was using a different bootable (step 1), b/c my microsd card was an off brand (lexar 8gb).
What I did was...
1) made bootable SD card with [generic-sdcard-v1.3-CM7-9-10-larger-Rev5.zip] rather than "so&so size gb card CWR.img"
2) added [nookcolor_1_4_3_signed.zip]
Before I got it to work properly, I had various types of failures-
stuck at "n" screen,
wifi wouldnt work (so I didnt get past nook first start-up process),
appeared to work ok but screen would flash all the time (your keyboard problem)
Eventually I got it sorted, and through all this trial and error, was able to properly put CM10 on sd card whilst leaving nook "original". Lol.
*I'm a newbie at this stuff so please make corrections if I jacked my post up! This was a few days ago and I'm at work... so I can't reference my home 'puter
