[Q] Help pls: Nook booted from SD w/CM7 good 4 3 days then started to boot to stock

Ok, I've been reading the forum until my eyes are popping out. I can not find my situation. So please forgive but I've been searching.
Bought a NC for my daughter for the purpose of Rooting it using the SD method. I followed the routine install last Monday:
1. Using WinImage, I burned the Size-agnostic SD Card image on the SDcard (Transcend 8GB Class 6 SDHC) using my HTC Incredible as my card reader.
2. Downloaded cm_encore_full-131.zip and moved it to the card.
3. Installed the SD card and bam! Everything was working and I was happy as hell!
4. I went through the process and got gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip installed and I was working away downloading apps and stuff.
5. Downloaded update-CM7-dalingrin-OC-sd-063011.zip and got that loaded and our NC was flying high. And since we have the right kernel, downloaded Nook Tweaks and we can use a case with a USB keyboard with no issues playing Angrybirds and everything. LOVING IT!
I was happy as hell cause I wanted to be done in my limited time before tomorrow because my daughter is staying with my mom and this will give her something to do.
THEN today after powering it off. I powered it back on again and the following happened:
1. It appears to attempt boot from the SD card.
2. The green Cyannogen logo comes up and under it it says "loading..."
3. However, instead of the Android on the surfboard coming up like before, it will boot up to the stock Android with the N splash screen first then to the stock interface???
I tried several times powering it on and off to see if it was just a glitch but it still did it. Soooo, I redid the whole process again. But once I tried to boot from the SD card with CM7 loaded, the same thing happens. Green logo, loading..., then back to the NC stock OS.
I tried downloading the image a few times to make sure it wasn't corrupt and reburned the img on the SD card, tried booting it again and still the same results. (I did this whole process at least 5 times!)
Sorry for the long read but I am frustrated and disappointed that i will have to tell my girl that it's not working like it was earlier. Can someone give me any advice to try? Or what can I possibly doing wrong? I'm beyond my skill sets at this point. The only thing that I can find on the forum is that it maybe the Transcend SD card but it worked find for three days. Can it really suck that bad after 3 days? I only have tomorrow to work it during the day so If I have to I'll go to Costco and get a Scandisk over there as some have mentioned, I will. But if there is something someone can tell me to try, please let me know.

You are probably on the right track with getting a new SD card. One of two things happened: the SD card failed during the initial "burn-in" period or the Nook's reader slot did. The card is thebmore likely point of failure.
If the problem persists with a new card, get your Nook back to B&N for warranty replacement. Just don't let them have your SD cards an you won't lose all your work
P.S. Yes, ANYthing electronic can "suck that bad after just 3 days". If an electronic component is going to fail, it will either be DOA (and even cursory quality control will catch it) or it will fail shortly after being placed in regular service (burn-in). If it survives the first 60 to 100 hours of use, it will PROBABLY last for years.

I hear you on the electronic part. I was also really tired when I posted. I guess I just didn't want to believe that the card was the issue or rather could be the issue specially when I can read the card from my phone and read it from the NC in the stock interface. It had to be something I did or forgot to do. But I've seen stranger things happen. LOL Things can break.
As soon as I can, I will run out and get a new (Scandisk) card and I hope that it resolves the issue. I hope it is not the NC's reader slot because I hate going through the "returning process" plus we have to leave tonight.
I'll post my results as soon as I can today.

I often not to believe the uSD card itself is the problem but I guess this time, I believe it.
I have the same card as yours (Transcend 8GB class 6), testing random read/write small block and the result were about 0.08 (meaning bad). Sure enough, running CM7 off it last few days then I got ton of FC errors. I now then boot CM7 from eMMC and use the card as an external storage, the card still gives me some problems.
Try Sandisk and keep yours fingers crossed.

I wanted to avoid running it from eMMC so that if i wanted to I can do the warranty thing.
Well, I got me a Scandisk 4Gb Class 4 this morning in addition to a card reader/writer to eliminate my phone as a card reader.
Followed the steps and still the same thing. However, I did noticed this time some I/O errors come up during the installation process.
So, I let it go to stock so i can test my phoness SD card (Scandisk 2GB) and it worked just fine. So, I'm really stumped now.
I'm going to try flashing it again a couple of more times. I can go to B&N and tell them it is not working but if i show them it does work reading my phone's SD card. unless i just push them for an exchange.

OK, tried the the latest stable and now the Driod comes up and it is in a loop. I abandoned that all together. Need to stay focused.
So, I went through the process again using #133 on my Scandisk 4GB and tried to boot with it. Same results again Green logo, loading..., then back to the NC stock OS.
However, this time I was able to take a pic of the screen so I can copy what I saw when I saw I/O errors during the installation. So at one point I got:
end_request: I/O error, dev mmcblkl, sector, <insert number>: this flashed down the screen quite a bit

JB2: DetectedIO errors while flushing file data on mmcblk1p2-8
Ok so I went back to the Transcend card and did #132 but using my new reader. This time it seem to install clean. When I powered it back up, this time str8 to the "Read Forever" splash screen and back to stock. Weird.
So, I redid the 4GB card again and got the I/O errors again same thing the "Read Forever" splash screen and agian back to stock. It's like it's telling me to go F*** myself.
At this point, I'm thinking its the NC reader reading off the card itself. I tried 2 brand new cards, dif brand, dif reader/writers, multiple downloads of the img and installers...I don't know what to say. I should just root it to eMMC but if i'm having trouble with the SD method and I go eMMC and that messes up I won't be able to return it on Warrenty. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone give me anything else, I'm desperate and ready to fling it out the window. LOL

LOL I love the way I'm bumping my own thread here.
So, I went to B&N and got me a new replacement NC without any hassles.
I ran through the routine from scratch with CM7 #133 (which I believe has the OC kernel in it) on my new Scandisk 4GB Class 4 without the gapps.zip just to take it one step at a time.
I powered it on and prayed to the CM7 gods. I see the same I/O errors on the install and I also saw chown: cannot access '/tmp/backuptool.sh' : No such file or directory which I've seen before as well. However, this time the droid came up refreshing itself in a continuous loop. Like when I tried the stable version earlier. I did this twice and the same results.
At this point I'm thinking it maybe the WinImage. I'm using Winimage V 8.50? So, I downloaded Win32disk imager to give it a try and using my phone as the reader again because that was the last known combo. Again, the same errors. Then the Logo, loading…, this time blank screen…crickets…
I’m out of ideas…I had a clean install once on Monday worked fine until yesterday and I can’t do a damn thing.
Different SD cards, 2 brand new NCs, different readers, multiple downloads of image, installer, etc. Two dif imagers as well…Someone please tell me you are missing a step or doing something working because this does not make any sense… Booting in recovery mode maybe?

The only idea I have is a longshot. When you were getting the looping bootanimation (the blue Andy on a skateboard), or the "crickets"; how long did you wait before aborting the boot?
I have seen it take a LOT longer in those steps than I ever remembered (or thought reasonable). I'm talking 5 or 10 minutes.
It has something to do with recreating internal partitions and the dalvik cache (IIRC). It's been so long since I booted off the SD card, I'm not really sure what is supposed to happen that way.
Sorry that I can't offer more than "just let the first boot take all the time it wants".

So, Truth be told I think the first time with the "stable" image I let it go for 3 rotations before I said jumped ship. As I type now, I tried going back to #128 and it's doing it again. Andy has done skated across it at least 20 times...21... I'll let it run for a bit since you say that while I research the recovering to stock in emmc in case I decide to chuck it up and go emmc. This is driving me crazy. I would guess that emmc maybe more stable than running it from an SDcard.

You have got to be s***ing me. So I staied persistant and used my 8GB Transcend card again. This time it installed clean (I was taking pictures so I can read the damn thing) and booted clean. WEIRD!!!
I'm going to see if I can get my Scandisk to do the same.

I have seen mention that using the latest winimage is not a good idea, something about it not working right.
Version 8.1 is the usual recommendation.
I have been using the dualboot image racks11479 put together, and i've burned it with winimage a handful of times without issue, but always used winimage 8.1
Not sure if that's your issue, as i've never forayed into the realm of recent nightlies, but it could be a contributing factor.

Win32Disk Imager works perfect for me, even on win7 x64 and winimage would write, but the disk wouldn't boot.

[Q] stuck on rooting my NC 1.4.2

I have been trying to root my NC for some days now, and im getting to the point of shooting myself in the face.
i've rooted multiple phones before, i started out with my g1 a really long time ago, now i am trying to root my tablet and i cant get it to boot from the sd card into CWM, i have an 8gig hd micro sd, might it be my card or something? i formatted it, wrote the image onto the sd card and loaded everything in the exact same order that the instructions tell me to do, ive even tired other methods and none work. any help plz?
i just want to read my comic books!

It could be how you are writing the image to the SD. You should be using win32diskimager if you are running Windows. And you should be running that program as administrator. Also sometimes it makes a difference whether you are using the card reader in your PC. Sometimes it is best to use a cheaper card reader to put it in the PC.

[Q] Unable to boot my ~unmodified~ Nook Color from SD card.

I just got a refurbished Nook Color. Seems to work fine but you have to push the power button hard to click it.
Haven't rooted, installed roms, anything yet. But I can't get it to boot from my SD card. I have a 4GB (class-4) microSD card. (I have checked the sdcard for bad blocks using the linux "badblocks" command.) I have followed instructions detailed here:

. I use Ubuntu Linux 10.11 "dd" command to write the .img files to the SD card. However, once I write the SD card and put it into my Nook, the nook won't turn on. Just won't turn on. As soon as I take the card out and try again, I can boot up the nook to the locked-down, walled-garden stock Android on the device.
Help! Is something wrong with my SD card, or with my device? I have a 2GB microSD card somewhere I can find if I need to...

What I might suggest is to discard your original source of instructions and start fresh. Search the xda forum for clear information on 1) proper mSD card to use; 2) proper card burning software; 3) the most appropriate rom(s) to use for what you want your Nook to do for you, and 4) if necessary, very explicit instructions to troubleshoot any problems you may encounter with your processes. I'll not point to specific locations here, because I'm not sure what you actually want to do, But the search engine is very thorough and the threads are numerous.
Good luck. I'm sure you'll be quite content with your newly rooted/rommed NC.

I have a section in my tips thread linked in my signature that deals with bootable SDs, but I'm not sure it's going to help you. I was helping another user that had the same exact problem where the Nook would not power on with the SD in. One of the things I had him do was fully charge his Nook. I can't remember how he resolved it though, if he did. But I suspect a faulty Nook or SD. Pins bent or something.

Thanks. It's worth noting that, if I get an SD with normal data (photos, etc) on it and put it in while the nook is booted normall, the nook can read the card and see what's on there. So the nook can read cards. That doesn't mean the boot-up bits aren't screwy.... this is refurbished.

Update: I got it to work. However, it's quite laggy, possibly because it's Honeycomb on a class 2 (low IO speed) card. Can anyone point me to a super-slimed android (don't care what version) .img file I can put on my card?

Oh, do not use Honeycomb. It is terrible. Use CM 7.2. They just this weekend came out with a stable version. Cyanogenmod.com. Look for encore stable. And your class 2 should work great.

Let me +1 the latest and greatest CM 7.2. I was using a supposedly faster card with 7.1 on an NC and I also experienced a lot of lagging.
Switching to a class 4 SanDisk card and going to 7.2 fixed the problem. Since I did both at the same time, I can't tell you what exactly made the difference but if installing 7.2 does not fix the issue, try changing your card.
I followed these instructions which installs CM7 on your SD card so you can dual boot if necessary. Also, this has the same exact info written in a slightly less techie language. (I am not sure why he is trying to use the hardware keys to reboot into the recovery mode when it can be done easily from within CM7.)

I know this is a super old thread, but it seems like an appropriate place to post. I've got three Nook Color tablets from my niece and nephews. I flashed them with Mirage Cyanogenmod 7.2 via CWM on an SD card. Once I got the SD setup, I went through two of them in 10 minutes total. No sweat. I installed two fresh, out-of-the-box SD cards in each tablet, which left the modded, CWM SD card untouched after flashing the first two. The third one was missing for several weeks. They just found that one. They dropped off the third tablet along with the modded SD card, which was sealed in a ziplock bag, to me. I installed the card into the third Nook Color, which was untouched after flashing the first two, and the third Nook Color booted right past the SD card and into the stock OS. I've reflashed the same .img file and others, including verygreen's onto this SD card. It simply refuses to boot from the SD. I've tried writing the .img file from WinImage, and WinImage32 through the SD slot on my laptop, an SD card adapter via USB, and through the nook itself as a mass storage drive. I'm stumped. Any thoughts?
On a side note, I don't have access to the first two to confirm the SD card is still on track, nor do I, at this point, have a spare SD card to troubleshoot with. Those are my next steps to take, but I am curious what the experts might have to suggest in the mean time. Thanks in advance, and I'll post my solution, if I solve this.

Are you sure the third one is a Nook Color? It could be a Nook Tablet. They look the same, but the Tablet has a silver bezel instead of black. Those cards will not boot on a Tablet.

My first thought was "that's a ridiculous question. Of course it's a Color!", but then I peeled the cover off, and the bezel is indeed silver. Looks like I have some more reading to do. Thanks for saving me a TON of grief and frustration.

Just to follow up, I followed the instructions for flashing Cyanogenmon on the Nook TABLET, thank you Leapinlar, and everything is good. Thanks again.

Hi xda, my nook won't boot up at all after I tried to restore to stock from autonooter 1.01. I read as many threads as I could and tried to make a bootable sd from leapinLar's tips page. The stock recovery with cwr and without. I used winimage and win32. With winImage I get an error "reading from file". win32 seems to write the file but it doesn't boot up the nook. When I try and open the sd with windows to see if anything is on the sd it says "not formatted would you like to format it now". I downloaded file, unzipped, then wrote to sd. I must be doing something wrong creating the sd but I can't find any info as to what. Thanks for any help

Are you unzipping the right file? You said something about with stock recovery and without. Those are not image files that can be burned. When you unzip my image zip file, you should end up with a 300MB .img file. That is what you burn with win32diskimager. And take the card out of the PC and put it back in before you try to look at it. And be sure to use an external card reader, not one built into your PC.

Thanks Leapinlar. I downloaded your nook color emmc stock recovery zip with and without the cwr. I am using external sd reader. I downloaded and tried cwm-6.0.1.2 bootable sd zip and tried that in the nook and nothing happens. Also tried the 5.5.0.4 version too. I removed the card reader and reinserted it in the pc and when I click on the drive letter it ask me if I want to format it. I used win32diskimager and it said write successful, so I put it in the nook and then plugged nook into computer with the stock usb cable and nothing happens. If I hold the power button down the pc does ding as if when you plug in an external device. I'm either trying to burn the wrong file or I'm not making the bootable. Thank you for your help.

You don't say, but you are unzipping those image files before you burn them, right? Should be 300MB .img file. Other than that just look at my A10 tip in my tips thread and follow exactly.

Yes I did unzip the image file before I burned it. I ended up finding a cwr zip that was for a 4 gig card, probably an older way of doing it, and that worked for some reason. I did use your stock 1.4.3 zip though and all seems well. Your tips page is great, thank you, you're very helpful now I can play around and brick it again with some other stuff.

I am somewhat a noob. I bought a brand new 8gb nook color from wallmart on black friday. I heard about how you can put CM onto the sd card and boot from that without altering the device itself. I have tried for HOURS to do this. I have looked up COUNTLESS walk throughs and done everything they say, done alternations, and used different cards ranging from 2gb sandisk (class 1?) to 32 gb sandisk this is a class 4. I've used winimage and burned the image to the card, then dragged over cyanogenmod and done this task in countless different ways. Every time I shut down the nook, put in the card, then re-boot, the nook does NOT boot from the card. It boots normal, then I can actually browse the card after it boots up. I have done it EXACTLY how it says here and read tutorials so its not a question of whether or not I have followed standard proceedure. My firmware version is 1.4.3. Ive searched online to this and to no avail. My sister bought the exact same one at the exact same time and it does not boot the sd either. I have done about 8 straight hours of research on this guys, so I'm no pro but I have a basic understanding of how it works now. My questions are this:
1: Did Barns and Noble put restrictions on the newest nook color or on the newest software version? And if so is there a way around this?
and
2: If NOT, is there an alternate way/installation onto the card that I can do (such as an image pre loaded with CM etc.) that I might be able to try instead of the conventional way?

No nothing was done by B&N. It is how you are burning the card. It will not boot in the nook unless burned perfectly. Look at my tips thread linked in my signature and read items A9 and A10.
There not any easy was not to use a bootable recovery card. Just keep trying, using different software, different cards, different PC s, different card readers.

Use win32diskimager instead and use an external card writer. The image is approximately 300mb with the Rev5 file. Then copy the CM10 and 2021011 GApps zips to SD card. Insert in Nook Color. Wait for setup to finish and shut down. Start Nook. Enjoy.

10.1.3 Wont Boot With Sd Card In Nook

Hey guys,Ive worked with CyanMod's images for several years and think they are great!
That being said CM7 worked so well I hadnt even considered anything else, I thought it had reached the pinnacle of what the NC could do, then I read about the new company and found out about 10!
Having messed up some previous tablets in a huge way I started by installing 10.1.2 to an SD card and working with it for a week, following the instructions found here:

everything seeme dto work well, including allowing my 7yo to play a game that I though was beyond the capabilities of the NC, turns out it wanted 4.x!
So after a week I used some instructions found on the same site to wipe that NC (I have 3) and install 10.1.2 to the eemc.
Again everything went smooth , until I put in an SD card, then the NC stopped in the boot slash screen (CMG logo w/ the circle spinning around it) and stayed there for up to 20 minutes, finally I gave up and turned it off.
thinking I had something left on the card I wiped it, re partitoioned it, formatted it 3 ways from sunday. Same result each time.
Then I tried another card, thinking I had one go bad, nope same result each time.
Last night seeing all the new info and fioxes in 10.1.3 I thought I try that
same result.
The instructions on choorucode were very straightforward and basically consisted of the following:
1) factory reset
2) delete cache
3) go into recovery and install cm-10.1.3.2-encore.zip
4) then gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip
5) update-encore-cwm.emmc-eyeballer.zip
6) reboot
I'm sorry I dont actually have the link to those instructions, had to reboot the pc, but again from choorucode's site.
Anyone see anything I should not have done, did in the wrong order or just fubared?
Is this a limitation of 4 on the NC?
any and all ideas appreciated.

sigh well i tried it all over again based on this idea...new sd card even, no go

anyone have ideas?
my son wants me to do his, but i really dont want him to not have access to the extra ram

What is the size of the SD? And what brand/class? Have you tried using SDFormatter free on the web?

its a lexar 8gb class4
i havent tried that one but I have been using a great app called minitool Partitionmanager on my SD cards for years and never had an issue
one NEW thing.
Since the new install I am also having gapps crash on a regular basis, some right from boot I dont have an error message in front of me, but when I see one next Ill post it.

But... try a Sandisk class 2 or 4 card.
