[Q] AOSP Camera - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to have the AOSP Camera with photo sphere and the amazing photo editor on Samsung ROM? If possible, can you give me instructions?
Thanks in advance.

A search would have told you no. It is either AOSP rom with their extras or TW and theirs. They are not cross compatable.

[Q] Blur and AOSP?

what exactly is blur? Ive read that its actually android mixed with motorolla's touch (which is called blur) but what exactly is it?
Ive seen pictures of custom rom and cant tell the difference between blur and custom ROM. At first I thought blur was like a theme and just had fancy animations. But reading about it further it seems like blur is the extra apps that are on the phone that is not stock with the android OS, is that right?
For example if a custom ROM doesnt have blur, how does one get the camera running?
Also is AOSP(android open source project) like the opposite of blur? its considered to be a pure android OS right?
Blur, sense, and touchwiz are all proprietary vendor frameworks that (theoretically) augment the base Android experience. They come at the cost of large ROMs and resources but some people really like them.
AOSP is exactly that- if you build android straight off Google's git, you've built AOSP. It's actually pretty good, hence everyone releasing ROMs for dx /d2 claiming to be 'vanilla' or 'pure.'
In between those is CyanogenMod. CM is more like an extension of AOSP than a replacement framework. You get some nice features and tweaks plus a consistent experience across devices.

hmm interesting..
So the google phones that one would buy directly from them without service, are they considered to be pure AOSP?

Google only offered that once with the Nexus 1. The Nexus S is sold through T-Mobile and Sprint.
EDIT: but yes, AOSP.
I see.. well thank you! this helped clear up a lot.
So im guessing the camera will still work with all its 8MP if used under an AOSP app?
Also is the liberty rom considered to be pure AOSP? If not, what ROM in your opinion is the best AOSP ROM for .340?

Camera support is more about kernel and libraries, I think, but the aosp camera app handles the Dinc camera fine...
Can't help you much with the rom selection, sorry.

Galaxy s4 and Miui Rom

Hey guys,
I have just upgraded to the galaxy s4 after having the s3..
and to be honest.. after using Miui rom for so long on the s3, I have realised how much I dislike the default samsung launcher (including settings menus etc.
I really like the Xiaomi cloud service that I had with Miui rom, as it backed up all my photos etc to that account but now I cannot use it as I cannot setup a account on my non rooted phone (soon to change )..
How long do you think it will be (approx) before we start seeing asop roms such as cm10 and also hopefully miui on these phones?
also, anyone recommend a nice Launcher for the s4?

Honestly... a very long time. There is no source code for the exynos 5 that can be used to help aosp or cm deploy quickly.

Miui is Touchwiz based, thus it's not related to aosp/cm anymore.

There are numerous MIUI V5 builds out there that are based on AOSP and CM. My I9100 currently has an AOSP MIUI V5 rom installed on it.

I was referring in general, not specifically on the S4. But there is only one MIUI rom currently on the S4 I9505, but that is based on CM and not Touchwiz. It is very much alpha with a lot of features still not working.

Halo For Stock Roms

Now that the PA team have made Halo open source, is there a reason it can't be converted to work on stock-based roms like Omega and WanamLite? Or, in a similar way Samsung applications can't work without the Samsung framework, will Halo not work on non-PA/AOKP based roms? I see there is a similar app with limited functionality by the name of Floating Notifications but it's not the same.
I've had this thought, anyone else like to comment?
You got it right. It needs major coding into the base system and with Samsungs framework being closed sourced it will most likely not be am option.

Do you guys think LG will do it?

Do you guys (and gals) think that LG will release the laser auto focus apk so that ROM developers can include the feature into all the roms they want? Or do you think LG will hoard the laser auto focus feature and not allow anyone else to enjoy the bliss that is Lazer Auto!?
Im asking in terms of the future. Will they? Has LG ever released apks of features to allow others to enjoy them? (im inexperienced in this realm so sorry if my language is off)
Laser focus work. The problem in aosp camera is that a big part of the quality depends on the lg framework and drivers, which are closed source and they're not going to release.

Is there any chance for us, to have Pixel 2 camera features on the Nexus 6p?

We have a great device with great hardware and was wondering if we could get those features in the future?
I don't think google will give it to us with a Camera update, but with some mod or custom APKs? I mean like the Camera NX project.
Will we ever be able to have some of the new features? Live photos or even portrait mode?
(I'm not a software guru, pls be kind, if I asked huge nonsense)
I'm sure someone will find a way to port them to our device eventually.
Pixel already got some Camera love from Google! We need this on the 6P as well! <3 Anyone?
