Loads of info around the web about biking / cycling turn-by-turn directions coming for Google maps in Europe. Strangely though I've got it on my Nexus 7 but still missing it on my Nexus 4. To be honest I would rather cycle with Nexus 4 instead of 7
Any of you got it on your N4?
(I'm in Ireland) ... Both devices have exactly the same and the latest version 6.14.4 of Google Maps from Google Play (which clearly says 'driving, public transit, biking and walking directions').

Hmm, I seem to have cycling on my N4.. But then again, I've had it for awhile?
I'm from the UK, maybe a location dependant thing? (for whatever reason)
View attachment 1996881
I have had it for quite a while in the us as well
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Yes, it's available in US for some time and in UK for a while too. It was supposed to roll out in the rest of Europe (Germany, Poland, Ireland - 10 countries all together) over last few days. I got it on my N7 about 3 days ago with the last maps update, but N4 didn't get it with the same update, which seems strange.
It's really weird. When I uninstall map's updates and get to version 6.14.2 than for a while I get biking directions function back, but just for a while. It disappears the second when maps say 'updated to the latest version' (even though I have automatic updates disabled in play store). After that I still can manually update maps from play store to 6.14.4 version.
Any idea what happens here? Anyone?

Hi quick question,
I just managed to sell my htc hd2 for £390 so am about to order my nexus one! (im in the UK) other UK buyers can you tell me how much its all coming to roughly, i understand its about £340 on the credit card from google then probably about another £60 from DHL once they invoice you?
Also I heard that if we're importing a nexus to uk rather than waiting another month or so to get uk version sim free (i guess from google.co.uk?) that the updates/rom etc will be the US versions and we may not get certain benefits/updates/default functionality etc that a UK/european bought nexus will get - what these are I don't know thou!anyone know?
What i was mainly concerned with was that I did hear this may effect gps/maps and sat nav for uk users and that we may not be able to use turn by turn in uk? This may not be true, its just something i remmber reading on another forum?
any thoughts would be appreciated
cheers
Well I believe the UK Nexus will have multi-touch.
I have my Nexus already running Google Nav as it works as per the old method for Hero/Dream.
It depends if you're planning on rooting it or not, if you are then you'll be putting a custom ROM on anyway, which will probably have multi-touch..etc (Cyan is already working on it).
Also the UK will more than likely have a T-mobile brading...etc.
Your Choice.
I have had my DHL bill as yet but it was a tad shy of £355 I think (depends on the exchange rate at the time).
yeah i think by all sounds rooting seems to be the way to go once peeps have had time to iron it out. havent had android phone before but like all i hear, i had the htc hd2 for about 4 hours before i was convinced winmo was a pile of ****! i think i may take the plunge and go for it -my GF keeps saying why dont i just get an Iphone! i think i need this phone to show her why!
If the euro Nexus does have multitouch there's nothing to stop Google updating those US phones sold to UK users - the hardware will be identical.
How do I test multi touch as I thought Eclair supports it out the box? I tried multi touch paint from market and it seems to work fine.
Use Dolphin Browser, this supports multitouch.
We KNOW the phones support it, its just Google couldn't release to US handsets for some reason to do with Apple and copyright??? not entirely sure.
The UK Nexus One ordered from google.com/phone (currently the only place to order the device) does not have multi touch support in the preinstalled apps. The device itself has support, the built in apps do not (ie the built in Gallery app does not zoom when you pinch) That's why installing multitouch supported apps from the Market work.
You will need to install a custom version of Maps for Google Maps Navigation to work outside the US. Keep in mind there are some limitations. Search for the thread in the Dream Android Development forum to read how to install and what the limitations are.

Exactly what I thought. I prefer the double tap
There is, afaik, no "UK Nexus" and "US Nexus".
They're the same.
If the preinstalled apps in the version sold to US citizens don't have multitouch, the ones sold to Brits won't either.
Same hardware and software, only if you're having it sent to UK, you get the option of getting an adapter for you charger separately.
It's explained on the official support page, which I'm not allowed to link to.
Be very careful about importing any phone into different regions. All kinds of problems can result, including NOT GETTING 3G COVERAGE! If things don't work for you, can you return the phone without trouble? That's a lot of money to spend on a phone that has problems!

The Neuxs One is a phone made for the whole world, so importing it will not result in problems with coverage as it supports the mostly used 3g bands around the world.
Also noone is importing the Nexus One to the UK since Google is specifically targetting UK residents and must of course provide customer service to them.
As for other countries which google is not really selling the phone to I don't know, but I assume that the warranty is world wide and you should not have trouble returning it.

It does obvious detect the network of the sim inserted, time and location of where you are automatically. Therefore updating the system and apps accordingly.

Really? How did it update these apps exactly? I had no 3g/edge/gprs or wifi when I set up. Are you suggesting that OTB there are multiple app versions? Are you saying that if you happend to be in the US and used a UK sim you'd get UK apps? I doubt that very very much, particularly as a SIM is not even required to setup.
SC
Let me break it down for you.
The phone has a inbuilt GPS. When you turn your phone on the very first time regardless of your sim being inserted or not. The phone will set itself up accordingly to where you are. During the first start up the phone takes longer if you didnt notice.

LOL I seriously doubt that happens either. If it did it would have taken a week for mine to start up. I work in what is essentially a giant Faraday cage. I just can't get a GPS signal inside.
So rather than you just making stuff up, can we stick to the facts?

ok you should stick to your idea of google having 4 boxes of nexus ones. they have one for US, UK, Singapore and HK.
They shipped you a UK one since your navigation doesnt work and it had amazon UK installed

I take it there's still no confirmation as to whether it will be available sim-free from an EU webstore when it is offered on Vodafone? In fact, unless things change, when it is subsidised by VF, it may be a case of signing up to a vodafone contract on google.com and still importing the handset. If there is some sort of google.co.uk offering, then presumably the price will reflect the VAT element.
i got one from ebay 470 free shipping..
Works fine so far, how do i get the maps working? whats the old hero method? Ive never had an hero lol
Has anyone got this to work on the US HD2? thinking of buying one to replace my G1, but i hate to give up my voice search and Google navigation. sorry if this is a repost.
i guess no?
Yea i have a Nexus one..I just got a HD2.. Yea sorry no advanced Google maps..You type it in and it tells you where to go "no voice"! Sucks but in better signal on HD2
I know the feature is really nice for Android Phones 1.6 and up and I am really hoping that Google makes the program available for windows Mobile as well (however I have a feeling they are keeping it for Android for an extra incentive to buy an android Device).
Why not think of... Garmin XT?
You can get Garmin XT on HD2 which is even better than google maps navi... works without the internet easily
Try Co-Pilot
I just jumped from a G1, and I was definitely upset to give up the free Google Navigation.
Someone here suggested the Garmin XT software, and I'm sure it's great, but it's $99, which is more than I would want to spend.
Another option is Co-Pilot, which I purchased for my G1 (before Google released Google Nav). It was excellent, so I purchased it for my HD2. It's only $30, and it's a full-fledged navigation program. One thing about it that's better than the Google Nav is that you do not need your cell signal, as the maps are all loaded on your phone. As long as you have a GPS signal, you're good to go.
Good luck with your decision.
cool thanks guys....ya i may try it out for the 14-day grace period and go from there......I have always been anti Microshaft, but that huge sceen just keeps me wanting it.
I've been thinking of grabbing Global Navigator: http://www.pdafun.net/ It seems to use Google Maps, and seems VERY feature rich for a one-time purchase.
Why dont u just use Copilot8? I bought it last year for my HD and the version that comes with the HD2 is fully compatible with the key from the older version.
Also i used it while a tour through whole germany without any problem.
And you can buy another map like US or western europe or eastern europe.
I can really say that Copilot once made me erase Tomom from HD as i like the 3D feeling to it.
I highly recommend copilot 8. go to www.alk.com/htc for a custom version for the HD2. it's only $30 and works on any sd card (unlike most of the expensive ones that come with a sd card) live traffic and gas costs a whopping $20 a year if you want it.
Maps are on your card so it is better then Google or bing because you do not need an internet connection.
For thoes of us addicted to flashing roms just remember to unregister it before you flash your rom or it won't let you register again.
also don't forget to get the free upgrade of text to speech.
my buddy who is a manager at my t-mobile store said that if i get the HD2 that he will give me a free license for a year to try it out, for copilot 8 i mean. I just hope Android comes out for it though, or windows phone 7. big part of me wants this phone but other part isnt sure if i should chance jumping the gun or waiting.
Do ANY of them have voice search/speak destination?
I haven't seen it on CoPilot which i've been demoing and Garmin's site for the XT doesn't mention it.

Anybody having problems with GPS/ Navi post GB update? With froyo and newest release of google maps, I could download a section of map and use navigation without using internet or data for driving directions so long as I was within the downloaded map area.
That's not working anymore post GB update. I was hoping to use this feature in London in 2 months without having to purchase roaming data.
Search the forums and couldnt find anyone else with similar problems, but the GB update has only been out 2 days.

The route planning does require data even on froyo. The maps app limits you to 10 user selected cached tiles which can be used without data. If you can find open wifi you can do route planning. Don't know if McDonalds have it in England off the top of my head. Hope that helps.

Yeah, they might have WIFI.. I dont know. Havent really checked, but I believe lots of wifi hot spots about London. Theyre even working to make all tube stations with free wifi.
My bigger concern is getting my phone unlocked. If I can do that than I will get a prepaid data plan for the 2 weeks I am there and problem solved.
CS rep for ATT told me it was impossible to carrier unlock Atrix.. made me pretty mad because I know that isnt true. This is my first smart phone, which I bought outright. I am learning as I go along. Thanks for the quick response!

If we haven't already, we're about to start getting the Nexus 7 north of the border. For those that have already received it, I am curious about just how much is missing relative to what was demo'ed at Google IO. Do we have some Canadian magazines or none at all? Do we finally have access to Google Music? Is Google Now fully functional?
Another question I have is what can we use NFC for here in Canada? I've heard that some 7-11s in Vancouver support Google Wallet though I've never seen one. Do you use it for anything else?
Google Now should work great, I've been getting all the local cards just fine. I leave for the States on Tuesday, and I think I might start counting on the the Now cards for travel, it's that good!
Google Play Magazines is unavailable in Canada. Shame.
I installed the patched Google Wallet .apk from MoDaCo, courtesy of Paul O'Brien, and received a free $10 prepaid card. It should work at any Google Wallet terminal in the States, or any MasterCard PayPass terminal worldwide. I have yet to try it.
I somehow received free songs from the Play Music store, and they're in my library now. Chris Brown or whatever, I don't listen to that ****. There is no way to access the store, this is a confusing problem.
Hope I helped.

In regards to having an unrestricted market, A guy over in the Galaxy S II section created a modified market apk. He's been updating it (last update in April though). Here's the LINK. I haven't tested this myself yet! I plan on doing it later today.
In the last 3 weeks, I've purchased 3 separate N910V's from different vendors on ebay and NONE of them can get a gps position fix. Outdoors, driving, doesn't matter
In the 'GPS Status and Toolbox' app, it appears to see satellites, but they are in yellow, and no fix or LAT/LONG information is obtained.
If I connect a bluetooth GPS receiver and enable Mock Location in Dev Options, GPS Status IMMEDIATELY gets a position fix.
As you may or may not be aware, there were two "GPS Week Rollovers" this year, most recent in November. You can google that for more info.
Suffice it to say, a lot of older phones are screwed up. The Note 4 was not supposed to be one of them.
If you're reading this and you have a Note 4, would you be willing to install the free 'GPS Status and Toolbox' app, and post your findings in this thread, along with the carrier & Android version? I'd sure appreciate it. REMEMBER: Turn off High Accuracy, Wifi, VZW Location Services, Google Location Services, etc. Only want to test the actual gps h/w here.
If gps is now useless in the Note 4, I'll need to look for some other phone with a removable battery and unlockable bootloader on the VZW network. I had such high hopes for the Note 4. Already had to return one due to eMMC problems. The newest one is using battery at 5-10% per hour sitting on my desk, screen off, in Airplane Mode, w/ no SIM, and Wifi/Bluetooth/location disabled. Not good.
Thanks.
I'm not sure what you are getting at. I have the Sprint Galaxy Note 4 running Havocs rom Android 9. My gps seems to work as google maps shows my actual location. And which fee app specifically are you talking about? Google Play Store has a few different ones.
This is the app I'm using:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&hl=en_US
Basically it will show you how many satellites are in view, how strong their signals are, how many the phone is using to try and obtain a fix, and, most importantly, whether a LAT/LONg postition has been obtained from the gps satellites.
Google maps, etc., can obtain usable position information based on Cell tower/WiFi triangulation, even if the gps itself is not working. That's why I asked for anyone trying this to temporarily disable those options in Settings-->Location
There are probably many other apps that will do the same thing. This one is free (with ads). You can just uninstall it afterward. I find it pretty useful myself.

I installed gps status and it has me right in the building and which location of the building I live in.. Wifi off, and no Sprint Location service for me. My gps works just fine. Google high accuracy off, and still has me in the same loacation. I will also try the app you posted.

Funny only one I find in the Play store for that app is just the plugin only.. If their is a app, it must be a paid version, and doesn't not show anymore.. Uninstalled the plug in, as it has no user interface..
It may not be compatible w/ your ROM version. I see that w/ some of my other phones, i.e. you can't even search for it in Play Store app, yet on a different phone/os, it shows up. It wasn't always that way.

That's true, but with the GPS status app I do have, every thing seems to work fine.. Last night it was picking up 8 of 18 satellites and had my correct longitude and latitude as well. I will ask what kind of condition were the phones in you purchased? If they were not in the best shape, that might have something to do with it. Especially if it was dropped a few times.. I never liked Verizon and have had them in the past.. It would not surprise me if they are running interference, just to get people to put away their old devices, and purchased those very expensive ones.
The phones were in mint condition. But reading about how many folks have had 2-3 warranty replacements on brand new Note 4's due to gps issues when the phone first released, I'll bet these are vzw returns bought up by unscrupulous sellers on ebay for resale to idiots like me.

Your most likely right... I usually only buy my phones from a person like you and me, who have 1 maybe to items to sell at a time.. This note 4 came from a women who had used it for about a yr, then switched phones, and put this phone back in its original box and tucked away, until recently just to get rid of it.. This is about the best phone I have purchased on Ebay in a long time.. There was another person, who has a store, trying to sell a Note4 he had listed as new, but had a slight screen burn in???? When I had asked about seeing a screen shot, he said he could not. His bid started at around $150, now it is down to $89. He won't sell that phone.
Experiencing pretty much exactly the same issue on my Note 4.
Constant loss of GPS lock which is incredibly annoying when traveling in a big, unfamiliar city.
Battery also gets destroyed when using GPS (or attempting to, I should say).
I'm not sure if the GPS has ever worked properly but I've tried many different things to troubleshoot and it seems as bad as it's ever been lately.
Could be a hardware issue with the proximity sensor from what I understand.
The GPS on my N910C works like a dream.
I've had this same issue recently. It seems to be even worse for stock ROMs. I have also started having a lot of random reboot issues. Same here, purchased several of these "new" from various sellers over past year.
