Canadian content - Just how crippled is it? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If we haven't already, we're about to start getting the Nexus 7 north of the border. For those that have already received it, I am curious about just how much is missing relative to what was demo'ed at Google IO. Do we have some Canadian magazines or none at all? Do we finally have access to Google Music? Is Google Now fully functional?
Another question I have is what can we use NFC for here in Canada? I've heard that some 7-11s in Vancouver support Google Wallet though I've never seen one. Do you use it for anything else?

Google Now should work great, I've been getting all the local cards just fine. I leave for the States on Tuesday, and I think I might start counting on the the Now cards for travel, it's that good!
Google Play Magazines is unavailable in Canada. Shame.
I installed the patched Google Wallet .apk from MoDaCo, courtesy of Paul O'Brien, and received a free $10 prepaid card. It should work at any Google Wallet terminal in the States, or any MasterCard PayPass terminal worldwide. I have yet to try it.
I somehow received free songs from the Play Music store, and they're in my library now. Chris Brown or whatever, I don't listen to that ****. There is no way to access the store, this is a confusing problem.
Hope I helped.

In regards to having an unrestricted market, A guy over in the Galaxy S II section created a modified market apk. He's been updating it (last update in April though). Here's the LINK. I haven't tested this myself yet! I plan on doing it later today.

Where is my $25 credit + goodies?

I ordered the Nexus 7 and activated it today. When looking in the account I activated it on I see no mention of the $25 Play store gift card or the free movie and other stuff that should be included according to the product page. I looked at some other threads about this and they all said "it should be there" and I don't see it! I looked in Google Wallet and in my Purchase History in the Play Store and saw nothing! What am I missing? Or am I just a Bad Luck Brian that just doesn't get the gift card?
Thanks.
You don't get the freebies until you physically have the device in your hands and activate it.

Same here. I received the email within seconds of activating the device. You sure you actually don't have it? Check your balance at the play store and see. The email may have gone to your spam box. Just a thought.
The other thing is - did you get yours from the play store or a 3rd party? The cynic in me wonders whether someone purchased it, returned it, and Google play sees that device as already having received the freebies.

I bought mine from staples and I unboxed it, signed into google, saw the credit email in my gmail inbox, then unlocked and rooted and wiped the hell out of it and flashed a custom rom and kernel.
I thought maybe I wasn't going to get the other freebies because I searched google play store and they weren't free. But it was user error, I just had to install the specific apps for google magazines and google movies and books.

Activated it in the USA and I never got an email or anything! Very confused and I wonder if the latest batch of units have the deal expired maybe?
Edit: yes I bought it from google. I looked through my spam folders in a eventually found the message and it mentioned free content but the link sent me to Google help and I can't find the content.

It'll send the credit and extras to the first account you set up. I have two, my old one one for apps, and a newer one one for my gmail and music. I set up my email/music first when I got the N7 and it gave the credit to that.
Also, pretend like you're going to buy something and when it goes to the choosing payment section look in the drop down for the $25 credit.

I tried this and the gift card did not appear on the drop down. Nor can I find my freebies anywhere besides in the email mention from Google. I would like to mention I had changed my email address a few days prior to ordering Nexus 7 and all of the order emails including the one mentioning the gift card arrived in the old inbox.
Just tried changing the email back and looking in Google Play but still can't find the goodies or the giftcard so I changed back the email.
You have a really good reason to call customer support.
They will probably enjoy a call from someone they can help, and is not yelling at them.
Should be easily fixable.
He said to do a factory restore. Ugh, I just got this thing all set up!
Now that all my data is gone and lost, I got the email saying I got the giftcard!

Unless they fixed it you can get the $25 on multiple accounts from 1 device. I got two other people $25 dollar credits just from letting them sign in on my device so someone else getting the freebies isn't possible. Neither is getting multiple credits on one account even if you sign on two different devices. Also you have to have a credit card tied to your Google account to get the $25 credit

Factory Data Reset worked for me also
I am glad I found this post. I was getting aggravated that I could not get my credit.
The Factory Data Reset worked for me also. Once I activated it the credit was there automatically.
Now to reload all my apps, music, and books again.
But it was worth.
You guys should have just made a backup with the Nexus Toolkit. :/

I got my nexus 7 as a gift. When I activated it I didn't get the credit or the other stuff. I did the factory reset (several times actually) but to no avail. When I go to buy an app, there is an 'add card for $25' option which does nothing when I add cards. I tried deleting all my cards, doing a factory reset and none of that made a difference either. I tried calling customer support a couple days ago and he had to escalate since he didn't know how to fix it. I'm still waiting to hear back.
Isn't this your post too?

Is there a way to contact Google via email to sort this issue out? The Contact Google page doesn't actually offer any email or something.
The factory restore didn't work for ya? Asked Google if there was any other way and they said no. Their number is found on Nexus support page.

Google Play credit greyed out?

I bought my Nexus 7 a month ago and successfully activated it to receive the 25$ credit.
I used 12$ out of the 25$ and then didn't purchase anything for a week or two.
Today I wanted to purchase an app with my remaining 13$ and I noticed the Google Play credit payment method is greyed out and I can't use it.
This is what it says:"This payment method cannot be used for this purchase (RBC)" .
Searched everywhere... didn't see a similar report.
Tried purchasing other apps... to check if it's something specific...
Also tried to purchase apps with my Nexus S... greyed out there as well.
Anyone has an idea why this happened or how to solve it?
As far as I know, the only restrictions are that it cannot be hardware (ie: Nexus 7, GNex, N7 case)
Same problem here...
Same here. First order went fine, but now it's greyed out. FYI, I'm using my tablet outside US, tried both local IP and US based VPN, and neither has worked.
I have the same problem. I think google made it impossible to use the money when you are not from the USA. I saw that all the guys that posted in this thread are from outside the USA.

Im outside us and i can use it just fine, only problem i had was when the app price was in a different currency it would allow me to purchase it with the credit but i could bypass it using orbot
i am outside USA but I used a VPN for the IP and market enabler for the currency and it didn't help.
I emailed Google about it... I hope they'll respond.

I am just having exactly the same issue. The worst is I dun even spent one buck yet...Tried a lot of time / method but still failed..:crying:
Yap..encounter the same problem..
It happened to me too. Didn't even get a chance to use my $25 at all
Hope there's a workaround for this..
Same issue here and I'm in Canada...
Hopefully someone will have the solution to this..
Same here. I wonder what the (RBC) error code could mean? I can still purchase apps on the device using my cc, but I've found that I also have a problem buying from the Play store on the web today. Neither my N7 store credit, nor my regular cc are working on the Play Store web site. Trying to purchase anything that way yields a Google Wallet error. Both of these payment methods show up just fine in the Google Wallet settings. Weird.
I've emailed Google about the problem and will report back if I hear anything. BTW, I'm in Australia and I bought my N7 through the Play store.
Same thing here (in the Netherlands, Nexus 7 running PA 1.99 shipped from the USA and an HTC One X running CM10). I have used the credit before to purchase an app, so it's a recent change. Uninstalling updates to Google Play and clearing data has no effect. Orbot returns an error when trying to start transparent proxying, no luck using that either.
Purchasing apps using a credit card is working just fine.
EDIT: Got Orbot to work by using the default iptables, but no luck. Play credit is still greyed out.
Hi,
I am from India, and i got the 25$ credit by entering actual CC info and some random US zipcode and phone. Now when i try to buy an app using the credit i am getting the same greyed out(RBC) error. Any solutions?

How could google take away the credit from us? It's like they gave us something and now they want it back. What about those who had already spent the $25 earlier on. It's unfair.
i'd spent £0.60 two weeks ago and mine still available. if it makes any difference bought and used in the UK.

Same problem here. I dont think it is related to location.
I was in the US last week. Bought the Nexus 7 and activated to get $25 credit. However, whatever I tried to purchase, it would not let me use the credit. I tried different apps, books, movie and music.
However, have come back to Japan now. Hope this gets resolved soon.

[Q] Access Foreign/Japanese Google Play Store from US?

Can anyone tell me if there is a way, easy or hard, to get access to foreign markets' Google Play store content from a US Nexus 7? Specifically, my friend is trying to buy some music from the Japanese Google Play Music store, but the store is locked to the US market.
Is there a way to access the Japanese store from the US? If she visits Japan, will the Google Play Store switch over to the Japanese store?

Thanks for the suggestions. Re: Market Unlocker - I initially tried that, but the pre-included options only were for a few select countries, and none of the worked. I looked up some Japanese carriers' IDs and tried entering them, and that didn't work either. Not sure if there is a guide for this sort of thing, but I don't know how I could have messed up.
For the other suggestions: IMEI editing is beyond my expertise, and seems very serious in terms of hacking--does the Nexus 7 even have an IMEI as a non-cellular device?
I'm not sure how to set up a VPN on Android.
(Sorry if I sound like a beginner--in fact, I regularly root/customize my phones. But this process has all sorts of things I've never done before.)

Currently I'm using Google Play via OpenVPN option (with Japan IP), without root (on Nexus 7)
While it will unlock those region locked content for you, you are still going to encounter problem when purchasing goodies off Japan (region) only stuff, and which, is a much bigger issue IMO. I have yet to figure out how to get the Google Checkout/Wallet accepting my non-Japan credit / debit card. So basically you are going to have trouble on anything which isn't free (well sometimes even ¥0 JPY stuff, which is free IMO).
Does Visa/MC/etc. sell pre-paid gift cards in Japan and the UK? If so, could that be a work around for the foreign credit card problem?

use fakegps, enable mock location, use vpn, create japanese account, remember that its not permanent

Can I buy from US play store with canadian credit card?

Does anyone know if I can use a canadian credit card to order devices from the US google play store?!?!?
I know the play store says it doesn't work, but I've ordered tons of US stuff with my canadian credit card before...
Has anyone done this with the playstore before?
I was hoping that my brother (who works in the states) can order the nexus 4 and 7 for me and pay with my credit card. I can just hop across the border and pick it up that way.
BUT on google's website, it says:
"google play At this time, the country of your credit card must match the the country to which you're shipping."
http://support.google.com/googleplay...answer=2462844
I'm wondering if anyone has had first hand experiences with this.
thanks
You can buy from them no problem. I had ordered a N7 from the google play store previously no problem but then I cancelled it (since I was able to get it in store and save on shipping). But it sounds like you were able to purchase it properly it is just that you had an issue of just where you were wanting to send it too. I dont remember right now but is there not an option that you can select to send to a different address than your billing address?
can anyone who actually bought something with a Canadian credit card off US play store confirm?

Travelling with Nexus 10, accessing US Play Store?

I can't seem to find an answer for this in Google. Was wondering if anyone could help me figure it out.
My mother wants to buy a Nexus 10. She lives in Luxembourg, but spends about 2 months every year visiting us in the US. (She is here now, preparing to buy tablet). She wants to access the US Play Store, both here and at home in Lux. Is this possible? What would we need to do it set it up that way? Is using a US credit card enough or are we going to need some kind of Market Enabler app? VPN/Proxy?
Thanks!

You would be able to access the playstore from most countries. The country would remain the one to which your google account is linked and I guess so will the currency.
For example, google movies weren't available where I live around till a month ago. They wouldn't show up on my play store earlier. However, they would show up on my sister's playstore when she visited from London. In simple terms, she was accessing Playstore UK from New Delhi, India.
In answer to the question about the US playstore regarding your mum's tab, I guess you will have to buy a tablet preferably with a US credit card (though this might be overlooked) and definately register it to a US based gmail account. Be sure to register a credit card on the playstore and google account which works in the US.

I'm afraid the above answer may be wrong; it certainly is for Google Play Books. I live in the US, have an Android tablet (Asus TF101 running a Jellybean ROM, tested and working fine with Google Play and with numerous purchases in the US), and it was activated and regularly used for well over a year in the US. My Google account to which it is linked has been used regularly in the US for quite a few years. And to top it all off, the account is linked to a credit card issued in the US, by a US credit union.
Despite all of the above, when I went to purchase a book while travelling overseas on a two week vacation recently, the purchase was denied on the grounds that I was not in the US. It may work briefly, I don't know; I'd been overseas for maybe 9-10 days when I tried the purchase.
However, it was utter childs' play to circumvent this. All I had to do was buy VPN access (it so happens I already had it), go in through the VPN to get a US IP address, and hey presto... The Play store let me make the very same book purchase it had just refused me.
So yes, a VPN is the answer. I used WiTopia, which is US$50 annually or US$6 per month.

This thread might make clearer which credit card to use. You can read the credit card related part.
As for the reply by the person above me, as he has tried purchasing from google playstore while travelling he might have a better idea about that, though I am sure US playstore, movies, music, books etc would be available to you abroad as UK playstore is for my sister. As per what he says, buying from them might be a problem.
